The blog Seeing Red AZ ran a blog post earlier about Shawnna Bolick, candidate in LD11, which was inaccurate. It was in regards to her position on illegal immigration. Shawnna attempted to post a comment correcting it, but the comment was not approved. In an attempt to provide the full perspective on this issue, we are posting a response from Shawnna. Shawnna is married to Clint Bolick, the libertarian leaning litigator for the Goldwater Institute. As a libertarian, Clint does not always agree with Sheriff Arpaio on issues, such as certain illegal immigration issues. But for those of us who know this couple, we know that they don’t agree on everything, and Shawnna is more socially conservative than Clint.
We asked Shawnna her actual position on illegal immigration and border security. Here is what she had to say. She didn’t sound like an open borders proponent to us:
1) Shawnna Bolick stands by the idea to ban sanctuary city policies to protect Arizona from the illegal incursions of our sovereign state;
2) Shawnna Bolick stands by the idea to deploy National Guard troops with authority to use all necessary military options to protect Arizonans from the illegal incursions of our sovereign state when a threat is imminent;
3) Shawnna Bolick stands by the idea to declare war on the drug cartels and human smuggling regimes in Mexico;
4) Shawnna Bolick stands by the idea to support effective law enforcement as a top priority of state government; and get rid of amnesty.
At Shawnna’s campaign kickoff, she said she might be a one-termer since she will be more committed to adhering to conservative principles than worrying about reelection. How many legislative candidates are willing to promise that?
Pretty funny that a blog didn’t know that about Shawnna. I’ve known her for about 10 years now, and she’s always been a solid social and fiscal conservative, unlike her libertarianish husband. And she does what she wants, Clint isn’t going to call the shots. I have full trust in her when it comes to illegal immigration and securing the border. Why is that blog taking pot shots at her? When I saw the host list, I immediately knew it was Clint’s friends. I too was at Shawnna’s campaign kickoff, and you’re right, she said that she would probably be a 1-term representative since she was going to stick to principles. NO ONE can buy Shawnna, if even CLINT can’t convince her on some issues!
Her platform on illegal immigration and about being a one-termeris heartening. It’s regrettable that she was so grossly misrepresented on SeeingRed. Anymore where she came from?
Anymore with her attitude that is…
Clint Bolick is so pro-illegal immigration that he stopped talking to my husband Bob, years ago over the issue. They had once been good friends. The issue has got to be a strain on their marriage or they have agreed to disagree. I side with her as does the majority of thinking citizens. I have always thought that rewarding bad behavior got you more of the same.
Shawnna gets it! Maybe she can educated her husband.
This is exactly the kind of candidate we need to get elected. She understands the problem, the cost (not just in $$) and will work for a real solution. Glad this got cleared up.
Just a question for Shawnna:
I would like to know the names of the businesses which have been fined or “penalized” after using e-Verify in their hiring procedures. The law was meant to include the system’s use as an affirmative defense, meaning if they used it and an illegal worker was hired because somehow the system failed, they could not be prosecuted.
As far as I know, there haven’t been ANY successful prosecutions under the law. Please name any one business, small or large, that has been penalized by a court under the law.
Thanks!
Funny how Sonoran Alliance separates Shawnaa Bolick from the actions of her spouse but routinely attacks other candidates that they don’t like for the actions of their spouses, children, and other relatives….
“… we need to work to improve e-Verify … because the system is so flawed.”
This is exactly why Representative Konopnicki has attempted to neuter Arizona’s excellent Employer Sanctions Law. Those favoring the labor element of the border issue often use this argument.
As has been correctly pointed out, you can count on one hand the number of small businesses that have been harmed under the Employer Sanction Laws.
So upon reflection of Ms Lynch’s comment, and listening carefully to Shawnna’s statement on e-Verify, we might conclude that perhaps the Bolick couple have some common ground on this subject and much of Shawanna’s rhetoric is simply telling the voters what they want to hear.
Listen between the lines.
I’ve known Shawnna for years, and anyone who thinks she is the type to “tell voters what they want to hear” clearly has no clue who she is. She is one of the most principled people I have ever met, and her statement that she’s rather be a one termer than betray her values is 100% Shawnna.
Also keep in mind who probably funds the “Goldwater Institute”. Clint’s predecessor as it’s head honcho was Jeff Flake, who never met an illegal he wouldn’t hire.
This is a tourist state and the Hotel, Restaurant and Fastfood are totally dependent upon coyotes for employee references.
And you can bet that a good portion of the funds saved by non enforcement of immigration relations finds its way into the coffers of establishment think tanks!
Thank God for stand-up people like Shawnna!

Because these relationship issues are highly nuanced and to be fair, they need to be analyzed according to the particular circumstances least one be accused of being “partisan” or “biased” or “Neanderthal.”
If the woman was misquoted, she was misquoted. Did we all misconstrue and require a correction that Madam McCain used masking tape instead of duct tape to advertize to everyone she thinks the majority of Americans are unprogressive troglytes in her free speech opinion?
Bolick’s roster of Co-Chairs is rich with Wake Up Arizona! contributors. No denying it. Bolick is with those opposing REAL border security. Read Bolick’s own list of Co-Chairs.
We know where you are coming from Shawna Bolick. Why don’t you spend one-fifth the energy complaining about our porous border that you do complaining about e-verify. Blame it on the Feds.- PUHleeease.
