Nears One-and-a-Half Million Dollar Goal

PHOENIX, AZ – Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County filed his 2009 campaign finance report with the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office which details an astonishing level of support neverseen in local politics in Arizona. Arpaio reported raising nearly $1.3 million dollars from more than 22,000 donors. The vast majority of this money was raised between April and December of last year.

“Some may find this hard to believe, but based on these numbers, I’m simply speechless. But I will say that I’m honored and humbled by the outpouring of support. It means a lot to me and that’s putting it lightly,” said Arpaio.

Arpaio’s campaign manager and architect of the fundraising program, Chad Willems of the Summit Consulting Group based in Phoenix, was simply blown away. “In my 15 years of political fundraising, I have never seen such a tremendous level of support for a locally-elected official. The rate of returns and the amount of average contributions far exceeds that of your typical candidate,” said Willems.

“America’s Toughest Sheriff” received contributions from literally every state in the Union and, because he was just re-elected to a fifth term in November 2008, sets him up to continue this phenomenal fundraising pace.

The Sheriff’s fundraising effort left the campaign with $933,000 cash on hand. This figure does not include the $50,000 raised since January 1st of this year. This represents a strong start for the campaign’s goal to hit the $1.5 million milestone by March.

Arpaio credits this level of support to his get-tough policies on crime, animal abusers, the operation of his jails, including Tent City, public corruption investigations, and his policies to arrest and detain illegal immigrants and human smugglers.

In recent public opinion polls, Arpaio’s approval numbers among Arizona voters consistently show him well above 60%. Among Republicans, that number jumps well into the 80th percentile. Even amongst Independent or unaffiliated voters, his approval ratings are in the 80% range. Polls show Arpaio leading all filed candidates and potential candidates in the race for governor by wide margins.
