Pinal County Sheriff, Mayors Endorse Speaker Andy Tobin for Congress

Andy Tobin

Momentum builds as Tobin Announces Key Endorsements in Pinal County

Arizona Speaker of the House Andy Tobin is proud to announce the support of three key leaders in Pinal County, the most populated county in Arizona’s First Congressional District. Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, Coolidge Mayor Tom Shope, and Eloy Mayor J.R. Nagy announced their support for Tobin, stressing his ability to take on Washington and fight for Arizona.

“Andy has a proven record of fighting to enforce the law and protect Arizonans from illegal drug cartels and human smuggling,” said Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu. “We need more people in Washington who have stood tall against illegal immigration and understand its negative effects not only on Arizona but the entire country. As the Sheriff of Pinal County, I see the consequences of the federal government’s refusal to secure our border everyday. I’m confident that Andy Tobin is the only person in this race with the experience, record and the commitment to public safety and border security. That’s why I am endorsing Speaker Tobin for U.S. Congress.”

“Andy Tobin is a no-nonsense conservative who puts rural Arizona above petty politics and works tirelessly to affect change in Pinal County,” said Coolidge Mayor Tom Shope. “Andy has demonstrated time and again that the fight for Arizona’s economy and jobs is a fight that he will take to Washington. I believe that he is the only candidate in this race with the record to affect change in Washington on behalf of rural Arizonans. That is why I am endorsing Andy Tobin for United States Congress in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District.”

“As Mayor of Eloy, it is my sincerest honor to endorse House Speaker Andy Tobin for the United States Congress in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District. Andy has demonstrated that he is a strong conservative who understands the values of rural Arizonans,” said Eloy Mayor J.R. Nagy. “During his time as Speaker, Andy has overseen historic budget cuts and stood with rural Arizona in the fight against Obamacare. I am endorsing Andy today because I believe that he is the only candidate in the race who can succeed in taking Arizona’s fight to Washington.”

“It means the world to me personally that Sheriff Babeu and Mayors Shope and Nagy have endorsed my campaign for Congress. These three leaders are on the front lines of public safety and job creation. They understand that Washington is broken. I’m honored to have their confidence and to take Arizona’s fight to the halls of Congress.”

Speaker Tobin will be addressing the Maricopa Republican Club in the City of Maricopa along with Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu and Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles at 7:00pm. Click here for more information and directions.

Andy Tobin blatantly distorts Kwasman’s record on ObamaCare

Falsely accuses Kwasman of “hiding from the issue”

Oro Valley, AZ – On Wednesday Andy Tobin sent out an email containing a blatant falsehood about Adam Kwasman’s record, claiming Kwasman is “hiding from the issue” of ObamaCare.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Since it was proposed as legislation, Kwasman has consistently and clearly been opposed to both ObamaCare and the expansion of Medicaid in Arizona.

A quick check of Kwasman’s Facebook and Twitter pages shows that he has been busy attending and speaking before large groups of voters. One of Kwasman’s leading issues is his opposition to ObamaCare – it is also one of the top issues on his new Primary Voter Guide.

“If Andy Tobin cannot tell the truth, he should seriously consider withdrawing from the race. Voters will no longer stand for politicians like Tobin, who are willing to deceive the public in order to get elected”, stated Adam Kwasman.

Below are several articles that prove Kwasman’s consistent and verifiable opposition to ObamaCare.

Governor Jan Brewer: Arizona to Keep Grand Canyon Open Amid Continued Federal Inaction

Governor authorizes state funding for additional 9 days

PHOENIX – Governor Jan Brewer today announced the State of Arizona will continue funding Grand Canyon National Park in light of the continued federal government shutdown.

“Grand Canyon’s importance to Arizona’s tourism industry and overall economy cannot be ignored,” said Governor Brewer. “While I am pleased the state is able to ensure the Canyon remains open during this critical season, it is well past time for the federal government to end this shutdown and pay its bills. We are doing our job. It’s time the President and Congress do theirs.”

On Friday, the governor negotiated an agreement to reopen Grand Canyon for up to at least seven days using state and local monies. Under the terms of the agreement, the State of Arizona is paying $93,000 per day to the National Park Service to fully fund park operations. Governor Brewer today authorized the use of state dollars from the Arizona Office of Tourism to continue funding the Canyon for up to an additional nine days, through October 27, if the federal budget stalemate in Washington persists. If the shutdown ends prior to then, Arizona will be refunded for any unspent days.

Visitors to Arizona’s national parks have spent an average of $2.5 million a day during October in recent years – $1.2 million per day at Grand Canyon National Park alone.

The State of Arizona will seek support from members of its congressional delegation to authorize federal reimbursement of any state dollars expended to fund park operations during the shutdown.

Primary Voter Guide contrasts differences between Kwasman and Tobin

Handout provides primary voters with crucial differences between candidates

Oro Valley, AZ – Adam Kwasman has released a Primary Voter Guide for Congressional District 1 that documents Kwasman’s proven conservative record versus Andy Tobin’s more liberal voting pattern.

The full-sized handout showcases Tobin’s support for the billion dollar tax increase (2010 sales tax increase), his willingness to compromise on the expansion of ObamaCare in Arizona, his opposition to Scott Walker style union reforms, his vote to impose Common Core on Arizona schools, and “Friend of Big Government” rating from Americans for Prosperity (AFP.)

The right side of the flyer illustrates Kwasman’s firm opposition to higher taxes, his efforts to keep ObamaCare out of Arizona, his support for sensible union reforms, his opposition to Common Core, and his “Hero of the Taxpayer” rating from AFP.

Kwasman remarked, “This race is a battle for the heart and soul of the Republican party. The voters must decide if they will send a proven conservative fighter, or another big government collaborator, to Washington.”

You can view a PDF file of the flyer or a JPEG image of the flyer at these links.

“The few voters in District 1 who have even heard of Andy Tobin are shocked when they see the truth about his left-leaning voting record,” added Kwasman.

McSally officially announced on October 1st that she will be running in 2014.

We can change Washington by changing the people we send there. I am humbled by the genuine enthusiasm and encouragement from Arizonans to step up and serve again.  I am so proud to have the strong backing of so many community members and Arizonans who want to make change happen now.”

An overwhelming amount of McSally’s donations were from Arizonans, showing extraordinary community support. McSally reported Cash on Hand of $388,197.29 Arizona’s Second Congressional District is expected to be one of the most competitive races in 2014. In 2012, McSally lost by less than 1% to incumbent Congressman Ron Barber.

The President of No – Obama!

By Raoul Lowery Contreras – Former Marines and friends knocked federal government barriers aside so they could visit the iconic and world famous outdoor bronze statute memorializing the raising of the American flag on Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima Island in 1945 by six U.S. Marines and one Navy Corpsman. The barriers were placed there across the river from Washington, D.C. on orders from the Obama Administration on “shutdown day.”

Republican Congressmen and veterans and their friends knocked away barriers put up on Obama Administration orders to block off the outdoor World War Two memorial built by almost $200 million dollars of private money on the first day of the “shutdown,” October 1, the first day of the new fiscal year.

Veterans and friend visitors at the outdoor Vietnam Wall Memorial were turned away from the memorial under orders from the Obama Administration because there is no money authorized for spending.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid answered why the Senate didn’t vote for a House-passed bill re-funding with “Why save one child with cancer?”

Democrat after Democrat parroted their President – NO NEGOTIATIONS with Republicans. The clock is ticking towards the United States of America led by President Barack Obama defaulting for the first time in world history.

We see the Obama legacy developing in front of our eyes. He would destroy the United States singlehandedly in order to destroy his political opposition.

A fire broke out on Marine Base Camp Pendleton outside Oceanside, California, causing the base Naval Hospital there to be evacuated as were 200 base residential units on Sunday.

On the first day of “Shutdown” the Obama Administration had ordered military commissaries closed. Hundreds of evacuees were taken to church and recreation buildings without supplies that normally would come from commissaries such as diapers for babies, bottled water, food and other things they couldn’t bring with them.

With the base on emergency shut down because of the Saturday/Sunday wildfire, crying babies and small children suffered through hours of isolation and fear. The base fire department wasn’t answering its phones because they are civilian union firemen and they had been essentially shut down while infantrymen fought the fire.

Left untouched by the Obama Administration were golf courses on federal property. Interestingly, the Obama Administration placed barriers on a highway in South Dakota so motorists cannot park on the road shoulders to take photos of Mt. Rushmore. The highway is a state highway.

Obama shutdown Mt. Rushmore

The National Park Service put cones on a state highway to prevent viewing of Mt. Rushmore

The President disappeared for the weekend. The Senate did not meet because senators went home for the weekend, as ordered by Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The clock is ticking towards midnight Thursday, October 17th when the country runs out of authority to borrow money.

In the meanwhile, billions of tax revenues are flowing into the Treasury every day, week and month – BILLIONS. As much as ten times needed to pay maturing treasury notes and bonds for ever, thus making default impossible if prioritizing of expenditures are made.

Nonetheless, President Barack Obama keeps speechifying that, never in American history has there been negotiations on potential default. THAT IS A LIE!

During the 1973 Watergate scandal, Senate Democrats refused to pass debt limit increase legislation because they insisted on campaign contribution reform (during the Watergate scandal). They went so far as to filibuster their own Democrat-controlled senate which threatened default. Democrats also controlled the House. Simply put Obama lies about debt legislation.

Moreover, Senator Obama himself voted against increasing the debt limit in 2007 as he declared President Bush practically a criminal or at least a traitor for asking for an increase in debt limit.

He says he won’t negotiate with Republicans.

He won’t negotiate for America. No President in history has refused to negotiate in the face of default or a new recession and a potential worldwide economic earthquake.

The clock is ticking. Will the United State go into default next week? Only President Obama knows for sure.

Obamacare – The Audacity of Nope

Obamacare Affordable Care Act

Obamacare

by Manny Fernandez – It has cost the American taxpayer $634 million to launch the Obamacare web site. I am sorry, but that as a reckless and misleading statement. The truth of the matter is that it has cost the American taxpayer $634 million to launch the Obamacare WEBSITE. The website plagued with major glitches has cost the American taxpayer six times as much as the bid from the private contractor bid for the contract to create the website.

Now, let me ask you something. How come Mark Zuckerberg can make billions launching a website that has hundreds of millions of subscribers without charging them a cent, but the federal government is 600 PERCENT OVER BUDGET launching the portal that is supposed to take Americans that do not have health insurance or are losing their health insurance because their employers have dropped insurance coverage in response to Obamacare? That is correct. The cost to date for a website that does not work is $540 MILLION MORE than the contractor agreed the website would cost.

If you think about it, the Obamacare website is the portal or front porch for Obamacare. So, let’s say you were having a contractor build a $250,000 home for you. Let’s assume that the soft cost line item for the plans was $5,000. Let’s say that the hard cost line items for the front door and the porch you decided would make a nice feature for the home totaled $10,000. What would you do if the contractor who was building the house for you came back to you and said that those line items — which your construction contract provides will cost $15,000 — will cost $90,000 instead. Do you still think your contractor is going to bring the job in on budget?

I think the GOP needs to go all in. I would rather bet the farm on a bold new strategy and give the country an opportunity to recover if a Obama does not play ball than allow Obamacare, as presently enacted, to bankrupt the treasury. John Boehner and Mitch McConnell should agree to end the shutdown and draft a clean continuing resolution that will raise the debt ceiling for six months. They should publicly lobby for the roll-out of Obamacare to be delayed until all of the bugs are fixed. They should also lobby for the assembly of a non-partisan blue ribbon panel of business people and computer nerds who will work together to make recommendations on how to fix Obamacare so that the program:

  1. Provides affordable healthcare for Americans who do not have and cannot currently get healthcare insurance;
  2. Incentivizes Americans to buy healthcare and incentivizes businesses to offer healthcare to their employees; and
  3. Does not create an incentive for businesses to fire employees, cut back their hours or stop hiring them.

I firmly believe that American business people have the ingenuity to make recommendations that will accomplish the laudable goal of providing affordable healthcare for those who cannot currently obtain it without creating a healthcare brothel where the government is the pimp, insurance companies are the hookers and the American taxpayer is getting royally screwed. Instead of using all of the obvious problems with the ACA to make the President look bad, John Boehner should ask for one concession to the end of the shutdown. He should ask for the President to go on national television and promise the American people that he is going to work with Republicans and Democrats to fix the law and agree that the discussions of the blue ribbon panel will be televised. In turn, Boehner and McConnell should promise the American people that they will stand up to both the left and the right in order to do whatever is necessary to fix the glitches in the law.

Like it or lump it, Obamacare is the law of the land. All we can do in a divided government is work together to fix it. The notion that a political party completely devoid of leadership like the GOP — or where what passes for leadership is the Audacity of Nope — is going to be able to overturn a piece of legislation that the President regards as the signature achievement of his administration without a majority in the Senate, absolutely no chance of acquiring veto proof majorities in Congress in 2014, no currently viable Presidential candidate for 2016 and dwindling support for the intransigent ideologues it sent to Congress in 2010 and 2012 is just plain silly. On the other hand, if the GOP demonstrates a willingness to work with the President to fix Obamacare, it will acquire the credibility it needs in order to convince the American public that there is more to this once Grand Old Party than the Audacity of Nope.

State Senator Al Melvin Handily Wins Online Tea Party Straw Poll for AZ Governor

Melvin Letterhead Art

“We all know the difference between scientific polls and straw polls, but we are very encouraged at the success we enjoyed in the Greater Phoenix Tea Party Patriots poll.” – Al Melvin

The third-term Senator was the clear winner in the online poll that allowed participants to vote for any of the declared candidates for Governor.  With nearly 1,000 responses compiled, Melvin had 44% of the vote.

“There are candidates who talk about what they will do if elected and then there is Al Melvin, who can also talk about what he has actually done since being elected.” said Joe Boogaart, himself an organizer for Melvin’s campaign.

Boogaart added, “Al Melvin offers bold reforms and real proposals to create growth on a massive scale.  He offers an impassioned defense of Arizona’s rights in the face of an ever-encroaching federal government, and he proposes education reform that finally and firmly shifts the power away from bureaucracies and into the hands of parents where it belongs.  And he gets to back up these promises with a real record of standing tall for conservatives.”

Melvin serves as Chairman of the Commerce, Energy and Military Committee and founded the highly successful Mining Caucus and Tourism Caucus. He has had a long business career in international trade and transportation, is a graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY and received his MBA degree from Thunderbird-School of Global Management in Glendale, AZ.  Prior to his election to the Senate, he taught college level courses as an adjunct, in economics, international business and management.

Melvin is a military veteran and graduate of the US Naval War College. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his service as Squadron Commander of COMPSRONTWO, then the largest ship squadron in the US Navy (14 ships) based at the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. In 1999, after 30 years in the US Naval Reserve, he retired as a Navy Captain, the equivalent of a full colonel.

He is a member of the VFW, American Legion, Military Officers of America and other military related organizations.  Sen. Melvin is a life Member of the NRA (National Rifle Association).  He is a member of the Elks, Rotary and Knights of Columbus, and he remains a proud Eagle Scout (class of ’61).

Representative Brenda Barton issues statement on recent Facebook post

As many are aware, some recent comments of mine on Facebook have touched a sensitive nerve with many people.  Additionally, many have simply taken my posting out of its contextual environment.  Had I chosen my words differently, or had the President offered to use the power of his office to lessen or mute the public impacts of this impasse in Washington, we might not be having this discussion.

Let me clarify that I never used the word or said that President Obama was “Hitler.”   That was a creative assumption of the Capitol Times reporter, who also reported that I referred to our government as a “Constitutional Democracy.”  I would never use that description because, we are in fact – through law and history – a Constitutional Republic.

What I did suggest, rather directly, was that the National Park Service enforcement personnel (referring to them as “thugs” for their reported behavior) were simply following orders of “their leader” – and I used the German phrase for emphasis, Der Fuhrer.  I am referencing the Presidents behavior as indicated by his actions. The Merriam-Webster New Collegiate Dictionary defines “Fuhrer” as “(2) a leader exercising tyrannical authority.”

Consider that the Affordable Care Act  (ACA) originated in the U.S. Senate.  The U.S. Constitution directly states that laws establishing new revenues must originate in the House of Representatives, so the House closest to the people can decide if they want to pay for the new spending.  The way the ACA was established was in direct contradiction to the Constitution.

President Obama has unilaterally changed the ACA several times, through waivers and exemptions, without returning it to Congress.  A president changing established law unilaterally?  Is that Constitutional or “exercising tyrannical authority”?

Consider the reports of the U.S. Park Service Supervisor in Washington, who spoke to the media and said that the Park Service was told to “make things as uncomfortable as possible.”  I ask you, who has the authority to give such a directive?

Please remember, that someone in the Administration directed the IRS to seek out and harass conservative groups and groups identifying themselves with the Tea Party.  Is that not “tyrannical authority” and did it not seem that IRS office personnel obeyed enthusiastically? What President of the people orders the NSA to spy on his citizens and sends the IRS against his enemies?  Is this not behavior in accord with tyrannical authority?

Arresting veterans for visiting their war memorials? Prohibiting Catholic priests from volunteering to perform the Mass for our Catholic men and women in uniform?  Closing businesses on federally leased land?  When did volunteering to minister to our armed forces become a bad thing in America?  How would you classify that; Constitutional authority or Tyrannical authority?

And tell me, how many times in eight years did the Progressive Left and the media depict President Bush with a funny little black mustache, or worse? Yet there was no indignant outrage shown by those who are today outraged at my choice of words. Actions speak louder than words; President Obama’s actions are what I have to base my observation of “tyrannical authority” on.

Nancy Pelosi has called conservatives “terrorists” and “legislative arsonists.” If I had simply said “the leader” in my Facebook post, would we be having this community discussion today?  My purpose was to bring to the public’s attention the actions and behaviors of our president and his administration since this government shut-down began.
For the record, I was suggesting that President Obama was behaving as a tyrant.  Didn’t the Founders of our country call their king a tyrant and worse?

The Declaration of Independence asserts that a government derives its powers and authority from the consent of the governed, and that governments are instituted among peoples to protect the people’s inherent rights endowed by their Creator. President Obama’s actions contradict these fundamental and foundational cornerstones of our Constitutional Republic.

Rep Matt Salmon: Mr. President, this shutdown isn’t a game!

Congressman: Why won’t Obama compromise?

By Matt Salmon – October 7, 2013
My Turn – The Arizona Republic

Our democracy has not always operated smoothly. Our Founding Fathers had fierce debates in Independence Hall before negotiating what would become the Constitution.

Through negotiation, our Founding Fathers created a system of checks and balances with three independent arms of government. The House of Representatives, with its frequent elections and large body of delegates, was designed to be the most responsive to the will of the people.

As a congressman, I take my duty to represent the will of my constituents seriously, and I join many of them in being deeply disappointed in President Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s “no negotiation” policy.

House Republicans, most of whom were elected on a promise to repeal and replace “Obamacare,” continue to believe that Obamacare is harmful to our economy and needs to repealed, or at least delayed. We also strongly believe it is patently unfair for the administration to grant corporations and Congress exemptions from Obamacare while individuals remain forced to comply.

House Republicans passed three different bills before Oct. 1 to keep the government open and to mitigate the harmful effects of Obamacare.

Each of these compromised a little more to appease Reid.

His compromise: non-existent.

Since the partial shutdown, the House has passed eight bipartisan bills to reopen agencies and fund critical programs such as veterans’ benefits and children’s cancer treatments. Fifty-seven House Democrats (including two from Arizona) compromised with Republicans and voted for some or all of these funding measures. Meanwhile, Reid rejects them and Obama issues veto threats.

Now, the president is saying he won’t compromise on increasing our debt limit. Our nation is $17 trillion in debt, and he won’t discuss with Republicans how to fix our government’s spending addiction?

As a senator, Obama stated in 2006: “The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure…I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.”

Fast-forward seven years and it’s clear that Sen. Obama of 2006 would strongly oppose the “leadership failure” of President Obama in 2013. After all, it’s under his administration that our national debt has increased $6.1 trillion.

Perhaps the most disturbing glimpse into Obama’s strategy to end the shutdown came from a senior official who remarked in the Wall Street Journal: “We are winning…It doesn’t really matter to us how long the shutdown lasts.”

Message to President Obama: This isn’t a game. There are no “winners” from a government shutdown and refusing to compromise. Likewise, there are no “losers” when our leaders negotiate. Our Founding Fathers proved this when they negotiated the Constitution.

Leadership is hard. It requires a willingness to work with those with whom you may disagree. Mr. President, it’s time to lead. Duly elected House Republicans are waiting for you at the table, and the American people are counting on you to rise above political isolationism.

President John F. Kennedy once said, “Let us never fear to negotiate.” He’s right. As we have seen before, it could lead to great things for America.

U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon represents Arizona’s 5th District, which includes much of the southeast Valley.
