  1. Stunning!!!

Something tells me that when the Democrats are willing to eat their own, the Republicans could make Jesus the nominee and would still be in trouble.

Let’s hope that Obama is the new Howard Dean.

Wow…that is objectively a fantastic ad.

Still, the only big brothering going on in this nation has been from this administration. Spying on Americans, illegally tapping phones, emails, and the use of torture, and finally scrapping the constitutional practice of the right to a trial and habeas corpus.

Thankfully, many Republicans like Sensenbrenner, Heather Wilson, and a host of others in the Senate and House are not too thrilled with these practices and find them to be what they are…damaging to freedom.

Man I DO NOT LIKE HILLARY.

The use of torture? Ah yes, that old chestnut… What a bunch of garbage kral continues to contribute to otherwise meaningful conversations… Move on friend to the bevy of loony leftie blogs that feed off of people like you.

Sonoran, I hardly see this as a garbage issue when what happened in those prisons in Iraq and now in other countries overseas…off US soil…was truly illegal and is not what we boast to the world that being American is all about.

I know that you all care less about the use of torture on prisoners of war or “enemy combatants”…even though it makes it more likely for other countries to torture our men and women and avoid things like the Geneva convention. But you are correct, I should have never ever mentioned it because that argument just doesn’t bother you or persuade.

Ok, so what about the other arguments I make. Is spying on Americans and screening their emails without a warrant or any kind of real check a problem to you? it seems to be to other Republicans. Guess not if it keeps us safe, is that right?

Which leads me back to the message of that ad about Hillary (argggh) Clinton. If you all believe these freedoms should be sacrificed to keep us safe, then I suggest you all pull up a seat in the front row of that arena in the video.

  5. Read Article 4 of the Geneva Convention and tell me what you would call those who don’t wear a uniform, don’t carry arms openly, and don’t conduct operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war.

“Read Article 4 of the Geneva Convention and tell me what you would call those who don’t wear a uniform, don’t carry arms openly, and don’t conduct operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war.”

Excellent point of course but let’s look at the purpose of the torture laws in the Geneva convention. The purpose, I would argue is twofold:

One is to ensure human rights and the proper treatment of those who are combatants. In a time when men and women are killing each other, the idea is to be sure that this does not extend far, far into to political imprisonment, torture, and additional needless death…at a time when it is very human and tempting to do so.

Second is to protect our soldiers from being tortured as well. When other nations see that we torture, the argument that our soldiers should not be considered criminals or enemy combatants or some other slippery, illegal term, is not applied to our men and women.

Anyhoo, we call them the enemy, we call our battle against them a war. Why not look at the purpose and not parse words. This stuff reminds me of the old Clinton-ism “Depends on what the meaning of the word “is” is.

Anyhow, more passionately and less snarky. I worry very much about the image of our country in the world. This is why it bothers me. We have rightly held ourselves out to the world as “better” and as a legitimate Beacon of Freedom. That our standards are higher. We use these arguments to say that our brand of economy, politics, and society is better and that they should adopt this.

What parsing words does and our actions today do, is to undermine all of that to the rest of the world. I think as conservatives, liberals, independents, and whatever, we should care about that…above all.

  7. I’m feeling a bit cranky tonight and I thought about not posting this, but what the heck!

The reasons for others to dislike us are far less prevalent than some would want us to believe. Mexico isn’t the only country with people clamoring to cross our borders. Our aide and support is readily accepted by countries across the globe by countries with their hands out and quick to close tightly around our dollars. The idea that how the rest of the world perceives us is of high priority is more a matter for liberals to use as a sort of childish playground ploy… who will sit with me at lunch if I have no friends…and leverage for their way of thinking. I can’t think of a time in the last 50 years when there was not some sort of beef against the USA… we do too much, we do too little, we are friends with the wrong people, we aren’t friendly enough, we are too hawkish, we are too timid.

There is no doubt some of our actions have not been accepted well in all parts of the world. But at the risk of sounding trite, that is a story that is promoted and given life by the media. Then once birthed, they keep it up until it can sustain itself. Americans who would travel to other parts of the world and speak against their country should quit their whining when no one buys their records at home. Celebrity status does not make you an expert on all things political. Shut up and sing or act or write or whatever it is that made you a celebrity and millions of dollars (out of our pockets), or better yet…just shut up!

We are at war, like it or not. When they are taking swords to the heads of our citizens, blowing up cars at weddings, and recently threatening to hijack school buses right in our own country does it seem like these people would really care about cooperating just because it is the right thing to do? Torture..hmmm, I don’t think the things called torture really fit the mold and if it means my granddaughter can ride her school bus without fear and my husband comes home safely…..get ‘er done!

As for the original post; as I’ve said before, the candidate who survives their party’s primary with the least damage will be our next president. If this is any indication of how the D’s are going to run this cycle, score one point for the R’s
