Phoenix, Tucson, Recall Elections: Predictions Anyone?

Here’s your chance to make predictions regarding the outcome of the elections. (Please keep it civil!)

Worth Repeating: Pima GOP on Jonathan Rothschild

“Rick accuses me of not telling the truth when I said my family business hadn’t taken any new cases for the City of Tucson. Of course I was telling the truth; our firm has not taken a new case from the City in the last year or two. We have given legal advice – but legal advice is not a case.”   Stated Jonathan Rothschild.

Mr. Rothschild is trying to draw a distinction between giving legal advice and taking on a new case. Regardless of semantics, Rothschild’s firm was being paid by the city. How disingenuous – not taking “cases” just taking our money and no reasonable person sees a distinction between taking on new legal matters and new legal cases.  He is intentionally deceiving the public. Our city deserves a mayor who doesn’t parse his words. When our next Mayor looks people in the eye, the people of Tucson deserve to know that he isn’t trying to trick them with word games.  We’re seeing the real Jonathan Rothschild. Our city deserves a leader who shoots straight and tells the truth. Mr. Rothschild has just proven he isn’t that person.

Why Isn’t Tucson Democrat Mayoral Candidate Jonathan Rothschild Telling the Truth?

Southern Arizona Machinations & Prognostications

Interesting predictions coming from our kindred-blogger in Southern Arizona, James Kelly at The Cholla Jumps. Here’s Jim’s latest post:

The weekend has heated up with rumors flying all over the place….

Political alliances are being formed and many being broken, The Tea Party and The Occupy Wall Street folks are actually agreeing on certain points..

The largest previous benefactor of the Pima GOP has taken back the reins of the party telling a moneyed audience ” I’ll take care of the party, you take care of the candidates..”

The Pima Democratic Party begins to move away from the Progressive Socicalists, will Raul Grijalva and his machine survive the political purge? Will that political survivalist Chuck Huckleberry swing right?

Ruth McClung comes roaring back, Clear Channel Communications will help redefine her as a centrist as she mulls support of Gabby Giffords/ Mark Kelly campaign.

Is Sharon Bronson done, will Gabby Saucedo Mercer get a come to Jesus moment to run against her?

Redistricting for the Congressional Districts are going to go to court, a federal judge will draw the lines for the 2012 races. But what about the Legislative Districts? Those will most likely stand. Who is in, who is out? Look for old LD 26 and 28 to be battlegrounds. 27 and 29 will continue to be safe for the Democrats. The old 30 will look similar to its present state with a few more Eastside Republicans packed in.

The Dems and the GOPers are identifying their sacrificial races as I write.

Jonathan Rothschild is out, Rick Grinell is in. Shirley Scott is looking to see what she wins from the machine after she loses her race. SunTran anyone? RTA Commissioner? The verdict is still out on Cunningham/Rawson match-up, as of today Rawson has the edge but Cunningham still has the family connections to give him something after his loss. Commissioner of Soccer/Sports Authority job?

Rio Nuevo news is interesting. As the State takes back control of the TIF, look for a business consortium to buy the lease ( at a discount) from the City of Tucson for the Giffords Family Trust property at 22nd and I-10. Do’t want that thorny issue of taxpayer money funding a Gabby Giffords/ Mark Kelly campaign again.

Republican Rick Grinnell Announces Bid for Tucson Mayor as Write-In

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 16, 2011
CONTACT: Kim Kimbriel

“Tucsonans deserve a choice, a chance to elect an experienced leader.”

Long-time community and business leader Rick Grinnell announced on July 12th he has filed official documentation to run for mayor of Tucson as a Republican write-in candidate in the August primary election.

In making his announcement, Grinnell said he is asking voters to write him in as a candidate because “Tucson deserves a choice, a chance to elect an experienced leader who knows what it takes to ‘Move Tucson Forward.’

“I coined the phrase Move Tucson Forward in 2009 and organized the first forum that year to engage business and government representatives in joint discussions on how to transform our city into a thriving, welcoming business environment. Enhancing employment opportunities is what it will take to provide us with the resources to sustain our economy and to support the growing needs of our community.

“I am running for mayor because I believe in Tucson and am committed to making this vision a reality. With a strong economic and stable business environment we will be able to generate more jobs and take care of our families. We will walk our streets without fear because we will be able to hire more public safety personnel. We will have adequate resources to repair our streets. We will be able to enjoy many of the wonderful dining venues, arts and leisure activities that Tucson has to offer.

To accomplish these goals, Tucson needs experienced leadership. For over 20 years, I have served the city as an active participant in numerous civic, professional and community efforts to help improve the quality of life for all of our citizens. I have helped our people find jobs, mentored individuals and counseled businesses owners to help them grow. As a business owner myself, I fully understand the challenges and heartache when people share their stories. Business owners who have to tell their employees they have to close the doors. Builders who tell the construction crew to not come back because they won’t be building anything for a while. Or a big employer who has to restructure, cut salaries or cut people.

Tucsonans are frustrated with the City Leadership. They are eager and ready for a change in leadership that will give them opportunities for success and growth. I ask citizens of Tucson to write me in as a candidate for mayor, so I can help this great city of ours move forward towards a brighter future.”
