News Flash: Matt Salmon admits he is a lobbyist! (finally)

Matt Salmon recently sent out a email claiming distortions and lies by the Adams campaign.

Our campaign’s research on lobbyist Matt Salmon’s career over the past 10 years revealed that he moved to the D.C. suburbs in Virginia, set up shop as a lobbyist, made millions and donated money to democrats–these facts are not disputed by Salmon’s campaign.

One source showed that Salmon was the treasurer of Comptel’s lobbying PAC when it contributed $2,000 to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Unfortunately, that source was misleading. As soon as we discovered the error, the video was pulled from our campaign YouTube account. Mistake made. Lesson learned. We have recommitted our campaign to exhaustively researching every source, because the voters deserve a debate based on facts — and only the facts.

It is clear that the facts show Mr. Salmon is just a run of the mill lobbyist, seeking special interest influence. While one source had it wrong, all of the evidence clearly proves the underlying point: Matt Salmon is a Washington lobbyist with a record of seeking influence from Democrats.

What’s more, Mr. Salmon seems to have put his lobbying career ahead of his conservative principles. While he had a conservative record when he served in Congress back in the 1990′s, his record in the decade since he left the House tells another story. When Matt Salmon was President of Comptel, the Comptel PAC donated to liberal democrats like Henry Waxman and Ed Markey. And, Salmon personally contributed to liberals like Ed Pastor and Joe Baca as recently as the 2010 election. These are the facts, and they are not in dispute.

So far in this campaign, Salmon’s tried to pretend the past ten years never happened.

Mr. Salmon has also realized that he cannot run from the facts. He has finally admitted that he was a Washington lobbyist and democratic campaign donor.

The momentum is on our side because voters are tired of the Washington revolving door and the leveraging of public office into lucrative lobbying careers. They deserve to know the full record of his experience as a high-priced lobbyist.

In a recent poll commissioned by our campaign, 80% of voters said they would be less likely to vote for Salmon knowing that he spent time as a Washington lobbyist. This poll was conducted by the well respected Tarrance Group, whose president helped to pass the American Association of Political Consultants’ resolution against push polls. Salmon’s claim that the Tarrance group conducted a push poll is without merit or evidence and should be retracted. The question fairly asked voters a question they will surely ask themselves on election day: do we really want to send another special interest lobbyist to Washington?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 24, 2012

Mesa, AZ – Kirk Adams today pledged that if elected to Congress, he will not take a pension for his service. As Speaker of the Arizona House, Mr. Adams made a similar promise, forgoing any pension for his service in the Legislature.

Explaining his motivation for refusing his pensions, Adams said, “People are tired of career politicians enriching themselves through elected office. In meetings with voters across the East Valley, I hear again and again that they are tired of Washington elites living by one set of rules and legislating a different set of rules for the people.

Voters want to be represented by public servants, not career politicians or lobbyists who benefit from the system. I put my money where my mouth is. I did not take a pension for my service here in Arizona and I will not take a pension if I am elected to Congress.”

Mesa, AZ – Kirk Adams for Congress received the endorsement of Chris Bowen today. Mr. Bowen is a businessman, entrepreneur, and former campaign manager to numerous Arizona campaigns. Explaining his support for Adams, Bowen said:

“I was Matt Salmon’s campaign manager when he first ran for Congress in 1994. I was his primary campaign manager when he ran for Governor in 2002. However, for me, the future of our country outweighs personal ties of the past. I know Matt Salmon and I know Kirk Adams. There is no question that Kirk is the right guy to send to Congress at this time.

I remember Kirk when he was a grassroots activist leading a tax revolt in Mesa. As Speaker of the House, Kirk was an extraordinary leader on fiscal and social issues. Kirk is a bright, successful businessman who knows how to get government off our backs. We need a proven, fresh leader with real-world experience whose agenda is a better America; not a better connection.”

Kirk Adams expressed his appreciation for Mr. Bowen’s endorsement, “It means a lot to receive the endorsement of Chris Bowen. Chris has been around politics as an observer, and as a highly skilled professional. Kirk Adams stands up to Labor Union Intimidation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 6, 2011

Kirk Adams releases new campaign video

Mesa, AZ – Barack Obama, his liberal allies and union bosses are destroying American prosperity. But unlike the Washington politicians bowing to these attacks on American workers and the free market, Kirk Adams has a record of standing up to the union lobbyists here in Arizona.

Adams’ leadership taking on the unions and reforming Arizona public pension system to save taxpayers from being on the hook for millions of dollars in unfunded liabilities is the subject of his campaign’s first video, released today.

YouTube Preview Image

Just a year ago, Arizona’s state pension system was on a path towards insolvency. As Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives, Adams authored and passed major reforms to this ticking time bomb, despite fear mongering and intimidation tactics by government employee unions. Adams even announced he would give-up his government pension, literally putting his money where his mouth is. The special interests and government unions fought the reforms and pledged to fight back in future elections. Adams stood firm and with a steady hand passed pension reform; thus carving a new trajectory for Arizona’s state pension system.

“Passing pension reform was a top priority on my agenda and it is my hope these same efforts will be replicated across the nation,” Adams said. “There is no doubt that special interest and government unions will do everything in their power to stop such legislation-I still have the scars on my back to prove it. With the recent Labor Day threats, conservatives must stand strong at the state and federal level and do what is right regardless of the political consequences.”

Kirk Adams is a rising star in the Republican Party, and a conservative reformer who shook-up Arizona’s state Capitol and will do the same thing in Congress.

A husband, father and small businessman, after joining the state House in 2006, Adams found himself so frustrated by the unwillingness and inability of Republicans in the Legislature to stand up for their conservative principals that he launched a long-shot campaign to oust the veteran Speaker of the House.
