AZ Treasurer Jeff DeWit: Endowment Investments Outperformed Most US Endowment & Pensions

AZ Treasurer
PHOENIX
– As 2016 comes to a close, the Permanent Land Endowment Trust Fund has beat industry benchmarks by a wider margin than in previous years.

Jeff DeWit“This is recognition of the hard work and incredible staff at the State Treasurer’s office,” Treasurer DeWit said.

The fund beat many of the large public investment funds in the United States including CalPERS, CalSTERS, Dartmouth, MIT, Stanford and Harvard.

“Our conservative, America first portfolio of 1,500 stocks and 405 bonds show that keeping our own staff and not outsourcing the management of Arizona’s money to Wall Street not only saves the state tens of millions in fees but also has produced better results,” DeWit said.

The $5.3 billion Endowment returned 3.32% in the last fiscal year ending June 30, 2016. This compares to the median one-year return of negative -0.74% for all endowments, according to results published by Wilshire Associates and reported by Bloomberg, LLC.  By these metrics, in the first full fiscal year under Treasurer DeWit Arizona’s endowment outperformed Wall Street’s average by over 4%.  This outperformance has continued through the end of November, to soon be reported at the upcoming December Arizona Board of Investment meeting.

Further, the Endowment has outperformed all of Arizona’s public pension funds during the same time period.

“This past year has been exceptional for the State’s Permanent Land Endowment Trust Fund, the returns will benefit K-12 education for many years to come. Being a father of three school aged daughters and husband to a wife who was a public school teacher, it makes me very happy to know that the hard work being done in our office will benefit not only current school children and taxpayers, but all future generations of school children and taxpayers.” DeWit said.

Deputy Treasurer Mark Swenson added “Also, this shows the foresight of voters to have selected someone with an extensive background in investments.  Treasurer DeWit brings a wealth of financial knowledge to the office which has been instrumental in the outperformance of our returns.”

As a statewide constitutional officer, Treasurer DeWit serves as the state’s Banker and Investment Official for the State of Arizona, charged with the prudent custody and management of taxpayer monies and oversight of more than $13.8 billion in assets under management.

Arizona Political Leaders React to Trump Picks

President-Elect Trump has begun to name his government advisers and cabinets and Arizona politicians are weighing in on the future Trump Administration.

Arizona State Treasurer Jeff DeWit and COO to the Trump campaign took to the airwaves to touting the credentials of President-Elect Trump’s cabinet choices including Senator Jeff Sessions, General Michael Flynn and Congressman Mike Pompeo. Here is video of Treasurer DeWit’s appearance on FoxNews. DeWit may also be chosen to serve in the Trump administration.

US Senator Jeff Flake tweeted, “@SenatorSessions is well like and well regarded, even by those who don’t always agree with him. I look forward to supporting his nomination” upon news that Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions will be nominated to President Trump’s Attorney General.

Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-3) joined the orchestrated Democrat opposition to Stephen Bannon by retweeting Rep David Cicilline’s push for a petition rescinding Bannon’s appointment as a senior adviser. Grijalva said, “Steve #Bannon made a career of conspiracy theories and hate speech online. He has no business serving in the White House, period.”

The most aggressive opposition to Trump’s picks have come from Rep Ruben Gallego who represents Arizona’s 7th Congressional District. Since Trump’s win, he has released a barrage of tweets following the typical Democrat talking points on hate, racism and tolerance. Gallego tweeted and retweeted:

“Appointing alt-right leader Steve Bannon undermines @RealDonaldTrump’s promise to ‘bind the wounds of division.’ #NoHateInWhiteHouse.”

“Hate in the form of white nationalism doesn’t belong anywhere near the White House. Steve Bannon’s appointment is appalling & disgraceful.”

“Hate & violence has no place in this country. I stand w/ the #trans community & will work for security&equality for all #TransAwarenessWeek”

Gallego also included a link to his speech on the floor of the US House:

On his Facebook page, Rep Gallego made the following statement regarding his role in playing opposition to Trump, even on common ground issues like infrastructure:

Given everything we know about Donald Trump – and everything we don’t know – I was alarmed by the words of senior leaders from both the progressive and centrist wings of the Democratic party regarding their openness to working with Donald Trump on infrastructure.

Under ordinary circumstances, a bipartisan infrastructure plan would be welcomed. But Donald Trump is not an ordinary politician.

Unfortunately, his infrastructure plan is really a privatization scheme, rife with graft and corruption, whose real purpose is to enrich the Trump family and his supporters. He is not reaching out. He is reaching his hand into America’s pockets, just as he has his whole career. And we must not let him do it.

And continuing his rant on Facebook, Gallego echoed his Twitter post with a link to the Democrat’s opposition letter:

Nobody with ties to White Nationalism should be allowed to work in the White House. Appointing alt-right leader Steve Bannon undermines Donald Trump’s promise to ‘bind the wounds of division.’ Today, I joinedCongressman David Cicilline and many of my House colleagues to demand that Trump rescind this appalling and disgraceful appointment.#NoHateInWhiteHouse

Former Governor Jan Brewer reposted an article on her Facebook page asserting that Trump’s picks for his immigration team, will be very tough:

Donald J. Trump has just appointed the head of his immigration team and it says a lot about how he plans to deal with illegal immigration…

The article, posted on Conservative Tribune, refers to Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach who was the architect of Arizona’s SB1070. Kobach is known as a staunch advocate for border security and stopping illegal immigration. He has been asked to serve on Trumps immigration team.

Like many Arizona political leaders, Senator John McCain, Governor Doug Ducey, and other members of the congressional delegation have shied away from making social media comments on Trump’s administration choices. Many will continue to watch as the transition team puts people in place and an agenda into motion.

President-Elect Donald Trump will take the oath of office on January 20, 2017.

INEPTITUDE, NOT FRAUD: Behind The Scenes Video Surfaces Of DeWit Screaming At Staffers For TrumpTrain’s Failure

Video surfaced today of Trump’s AZ point person and Chairman Jeff DeWit going off on his TrumpTrain staffers (who appear to be Thayer Verschoor and Charles Munoz) who apparently did not vet the delegates that THEY placed on THEIR slate.

To quote The Donald, they are “lightweight chock artists”.  The TrumpTrain cannot cry foul for their delegate disaster now that we have video evidence blaming each other for their ineptitude.

Just remember this video the next time the tiny-handed Trump says he’ll “hire the best people”.

For DeWit, the Media Spotlight Trumps Arizona’s K-12 Education

Last night Governor Doug Ducey called a special session in order to approve a K-12 education plan that will put an end to litigation and put $3.5 billion back into K-12 education without raising taxes.

State Treasurer Jeff DeWit has been whining for months about the plan, but he wasn’t in Phoenix yesterday to answer questions or offer any sustentative alternatives. He was in Boulder, Colorado, following around Presidential candidate Donald Trump like an eager puppy. Hopefully, Treasurer DeWit wasn’t seeking financial advice from The Donald.

It’s actually no surprise to see DeWit and Trump together. Both have the same thirst for attention from the media. The mainstream media, all too happy to play-up the egotists and swindlers on the right, are happy to give them the airtime.

Meanwhile, the business of helping Arizona’s children get the funding they need continues. From The Arizona Capitol Times:

The House and Senate Appropriations committees began considering the bills at 8:30 a.m. The bills will then head to both chambers’ Rules committees and Republican and Democratic caucuses. Both chambers are scheduled to debate and take a final vote on the package at 1:30 p.m. today.

Will DeWit be back in Arizona today or will his need to seek the spotlight trump his phony rhetoric?

ARIZONA STATE TREASURER CANDIDATE JEFF DEWIT RESPONSE
TO AZGOP CHAIRMAN ROBERT GRAHAM ASKING CAMPAIGNS FOR POSITIVE MESSAGING

August 20, 2014 – Phoenix – Recently AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham issued a statement asking candidates for positive messaging that builds the Republican Party.

In response, Jeff DeWit, CEO/Investment Professional and Arizona State Treasurer candidate, has introduced his family friendly, upbeat, positive campaign video titled “Go and Vote” which can be found on Jeff DeWit’s YouTube Channel here – http://youtu.be/ToUE8zT8Tno – or through the News section on JeffDeWit.com.

“Too many negative messages are flooding the airwaves,” said DeWit.  “I hope this sets an example of a different way to encourage Arizonans to vote.  Our goal is that this will bring smiles and goodwill to Arizona voters, while showing that there is a better way to get our message out.”

Jeff’s wife, Marina stated, “Anyone who knows Jeff knows that he is very serious about being Arizona’s next State Treasurer and understands the responsibilities of the office. But what many don’t know about him is his great sense of humor, love for his family, friends and the Great State of Arizona. We hope all who view this video will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.”

Hugh Hallman Statement on Accusations of Sign Tampering

Hugh Hallman

STATEMENT BY HUGH HALLMAN ON JEFF DEWIT’S ACCUSATIONS ABOUT POLITICAL SIGN TAMPERING

Today, Jeff DeWit accused our campaign of blocking the view of his road signs to passers-by by placing our signs in front of his.

We know signs are a lightening rod for mischief. And we know that pictures can tell false stories — and the ones produced by Jeff DeWit’s campaign are no different.

To be clear — our campaign has a strict policy to never purposefully interfere with the signs of any other candidate, and to be fair with the placement of our signs near the signs of any other candidate, including competitors. This is a policy for all campaign staff and has been clearly communicated from Day 1.

Why would we take the risk of embarrassing our campaign to block one or two out of the thousands of road signs currently positioned by all candidates statewide?

Our campaign can also produce photos showing Hallman signs that have been blocked by DeWit signs, taken down and/or tampered with. But we’re not going to accuse a grown man running for office of being behind teenage shenanigans. Candidates running in an important statewide race should have more important things to worry about.

When we find instances where our signs have been tampered with, we fix them and move on. We don’t have a fit about it on Twitter.

Instead, we try to address these issues like adults. We’re not going out and making baseless accusations about anyone. If Jeff DeWit — or any other candidate for that matter — has a problem with the placement of any of our signs, we invite them to call us at 480.423.0515 and let us know.

It would also be helpful to let us know where they are, which DeWit didn’t do. Our staff went out today to make sure there were no instances of these kinds of shenanigans, spending several hours where we believed the “gotcha” photos were taken to make sure we caught any sign placements others may have done that were improper.

With less than two weeks left until Election Day, we can’t help but wonder if Mr. DeWit is looking for a distraction — any distraction — to keep voters from focusing on the concerning record of risky business by his day-trading firm, or the lack of support he has from statewide conservative leaders, or the fact that he has had to almost entirely self-fund his campaign because he can’t raise money from supporters.

But if it’s really signs Jeff is most concerned about, then Jeff, give us a call. We’re happy to discuss it like adults.

Is this the kind of leader you want protecting your tax dollars?

Here are two photos taken by Republican activist supporting Jeff DeWit for Arizona Treasurer.

As you can see the campaign team for Hugh Hallman has blocked or sandwiched DeWit’s signs in order to keep DeWit from getting his message out.

Because this was blatantly offensive, Hallman needs to issue a public apology to DeWit and fire his campaign workers for their unethical practice.

If nothing happens, it will speak volumes to the character to Hugh Hallman – a candidate who will do anything to his opponents in order to get elected.

Jeff DeWit: When Your Money Is On The Line, Integrity Matters

Jeff DeWit

Phoenix – If a lifelong lawyer and career politician is willing to lie to voters in order to be elected as our State Treasurer, can we really trust him to take care of Arizona’s $13 Billion in investments?

“I am not a politician.  I have never run for public office prior to running for State Treasurer.  I have been full-time in the financial industry since 1992, becoming a fully licensed investment professional in 1993.  For over 21 years I have been a prudent custodian of the funds entrusted in my care, and am well regarded in the industry for the success I have had as a result of hard work and determination.

My opponent, Hugh Hallman, recently took material to many news outlets in the hopes that the press would publish false and misleading information right before early ballots are sent to voters, and by the time the truth would be revealed, voters would have already voted.  I appreciate the time that Capitol Times reporter Evan Wyloge spent with me to sift through the information, and I feel his and Hank Stephenson’s article fairly represents the situation.

I invite anyone with questions to read the complete article and the attached Take-Down notice my attorneys sent to the stations playing Hugh’s false and misleading advertisement. (Take-Down notice 2)

The bottom line is, never was it even alleged that insider trading ever occurred at the company I led as CEO for 14 years. Not one time.  With over 500 licensed professional exchange-member traders trading over a billion shares a month,ECHOtrade was known for being a top-tier firm of the highest ethical caliber.

Politics, however, seems to have its share of people with no ethics.  Unethical people who are willing to lie and smear the name of good people in order to move up to the next rung of their political ladder.  I have to say that I was warned about running against Hugh, and the tactics he would employ.  Many people told me that Hugh Hallman was known for doing whatever dirty tricks he could to smear his opponents, and he certainly has lived up to his reputation.  On the campaign trail I have witnessed him tell one group of people one thing, and another group the opposite just to appease each.  In the past, Hugh Hallman has proudly proclaimed that “the state’s Medicaid expansion is needed and that Common Core is good for Arizona students” and that he was instrumental “in creating, building and enhancing the very model by which STEM and the entire Common Core can be delivered universally, for all of Arizona’s student population.”  And yet in Republican meetings has said he is now against Common Core, but is a supporter of the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards (which many know is the exact same thing but with a different name).  Hallman has also sent mixed messages on varying other topics important to Arizona voters, to which he has taken much heat and it makes sense why he is trying to redirect the discussion away from his unpopular views and lack of a financial investing experience right before voters receive their ballots.

I now understand why more good people don’t run for office.  Politics can be a dirty business, in which some self-serving individuals are out to destroy anyone who opposes them. In a small way I understand Hugh’s attack.  I am the most qualified to be Arizona’s next State Treasurer and a threat to his political career ambitions.  Some view this and say, “welcome to politics.” But my thought is why do we have to accept this?  Aren’t we tired of this behavior and politics as usual?

One of the many things I have learned in my first campaign is that after a long time in office, many politicians seem to catch some sort of a communicable ethical disease which leads them to look out solely for themselves, and forget the will and needs of the people they represent.  Hugh Hallman appears to have been infected, and as a voter myself I hope to send him to be quarantined in the private sector for a dose of free market anti-venom.  And I hope he uses that time to take a long look in the mirror and realize that instead of lying about good hard-working people, the best way to improve Arizona is to protect taxpayers and promote policies that help our business community, bring in jobs, and grow Arizona’s economy.”

Free Enterprise Club Endorses Jeff DeWit for State Treasurer

The Arizona Free Enterprise Club PAC today announced the endorsement of Jeff DeWit for State Treasurer. The conservative DeWit is in a tough 3-way Republican primary for the office against two other establishment candidates.

Jeff DeWit’s strong business background and conservative free market principles is what earned him the endorsement from the Club. “Jeff is the type of pro-growth, limited government candidate we need in the Treasurers office,” PAC spokesman Scot Mussi said.

Being a first time candidate, Jeff won’t be the establishments’ choice for the office, but his impressive experience in the financial sector makes him the most qualified for the position. “Simply put, there is only one person with the credentials and expertise to be Arizona’s next Treasurer, and that is Jeff DeWit.”
