An Arizona Rancher Speaks Out On The BLM Bundy Battle

An open letter to Greta Van Susteran by Gail Tobin

Dear Greta,

Thank you for your coverage of the situation in Clark County, Nevada. As a public lands rancher myself, I know that there is more to the story than appears. First off, the major issue is that of States’ Rights. Originally, the lands of the western Territories, then termed “waste lands” were to revert to the jurisdiction of the various states as they were formed. This was supposed to happen but did not and as a result, today we have enormous, top heavy bureauracies that really have little to do with what is good for the land.True, there are some in the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management that do care for the land. Unfortunately there are many more that are concerned only about continuing and extending the power of their fiefdoms. In the more than thirty years that I have been involved in public lands ranching, I have seen the relationship with the administrators of public lands (in our case the Forest Service) go from a partnership doing what is best for the resource, to a more adversarial situation. I expect that this is what the Bundy family encountered as well. Basically what Cliven Bundy is standing for is his family’s right to continue ranching. Believe me, someone whose family has been on that land for 140 years or so, cares more and knows more of the land than some bureaucrat in Washington or some starry eyed young graduate with a brand new degree in Range Management. What tipped the situation back in the nineties was the straw horse of the endangered desert tortoise To my knowledge, the tortise fare well indeed, they do not compete with cattle for food or resources. This is simply a canard to draw attention away for the real issue, control. The lands controled by the Federal Government in the West are extremely rich in natural resources, including water. Those that control this wealth and power at the federal level will not return this wealth to those to whom it belongs, the people of the various western states.

Another issue is that most people do not realize that in the desert southwest it takes far more acreage to support one cow/calf unit (the basic unit of range management) than it does east of the Rockies. Also, here we are managing for wildlife, range conservation and our cattle. This means that we run cattle in what to most seem to be huge amounts of acreage. Since we do this on public land, most of which would not produce anything but scenery we are paying to help support the resource. Though our basic grazing fee is small we have the added costs of maintaining the infrastructure and providing water (in droughty years like this) to both our cattle and wildlife. Where we might be watering 46 head of mother cows, we might also be watering elk, deer and antelope in the hundreds. With fuel at almost $4.00 per gallon this is no small expense.

It should also be noted that the situation came to a head just recently. Please note that since Harry Reid’s trip to China in 2011 the move is on to build an even larger solar power facility outside Laughlin Nv. .Also, ENN Energy (China) is going to build a solar panel facility in southern Nevada. Total investment is said to be about 5 billion dollars. Coincidentally, the law firm in which Rory Reid is a partner, just happens to be handling the legal work for this company in the United States. As I understand it, the BLM has to take a certain amount of land out of production to mitigate the effects of a large solar panel array as they are not particularly environmentally friendly to the immediate surrounding area (Look up “Solar Regional Mitigating Plan”). It is my guess that Cliven Bundy became a convenient target due to his stand on states rights. (You might also note, Kornze, now director of the BLM is a former senior aide to Senator Reid.)

The Bundy family should be left alone to do what they have done for generations, care for their cattle and the land. I have learned from observation, if you do not take care of the land, it will not take care of you. And for those that think that desert ranching is a rich man’s game, it is not. You often get up tired and go to bed exhausted, you work most days from dawn to dusk and hope that you have enough daylight to get everything done that you need to (horses don’t come with headlights).

Greta, please don’t let this fall off your radar, this is just another twist on the Biodiversity Treaty, “The Wildlands Project” and Agenda 21. This is a situation that I have following since the effort to initiate “Rangeland Reform” back in the early 90’s. If you wish to learn more about the issues (which eventually will affect all Americans) please read “The War on the West” by William T. Pendley of the Mountain States Legal Foundation. If you think that this is over you are wrong. The moment that the federal government thinks that no one is watching, they will be back to finish what they started.

Thank you for your kind attention,

Sincerely,
Gail M. Tobin, Elk Springs Ranch

Richard Carmona’s First Vote Tells It All

Jeff Flake

Arizonans know Carmona’s loyalty is to President Obama and Harry Reid

PHOENIX – Richard Carmona knows that he can’t be honest about his liberal political leanings since they are so out of step for Arizona. He’s worked hard to avoid taking public positions, trying to hide from voters that he’d be a reliable vote for Obama’s liberal agenda. The latest example is Carmona’s attempt to hide who he would support as his Democratic leader in the Senate – which would be his first vote.

Before new members are sworn in, they elect their party’s leadership. For Democrat Richard Carmona, there’s little doubt for whom he’ll cast his vote — Harry Reid.

Like President Obama, Senator Reid personally recruited Richard Carmona to join him in Washington. Both did so knowing that Democrat Carmona would be a reliable rubber stamp vote for their liberal agenda. In fact, Reid is so confident in Carmona’s vote that he and his Senate Majority PAC hassunk more than $400,000 into his race. Additionally, the Democrat’s Senatorial Campaign Committee has spent over $500,000 to date in Arizona for Richard Carmona.

“Richard Carmona is bought and paid for by Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid, because his Super PAC has sunk over $400,000 into Carmona’s campaign” said Andrew Wilder, communications director for Flake for Senate. “Does anybody believe for a moment that Carmona isn’t expected to repay Harry Reid’s generous investment in his campaign by supporting him as his party leader? Either Dr. Carmona is incredibly naïve or he thinks Arizona voters are dumb.”

It’s understandable why Democrat Richard Carmona is embarrassed to be open about supporting Harry Reid.  Because not only did Reid personally write the $1.76 trillion, job-killing healthcare bill, but under his leadership, the Senate has failed to pass a budget – perhaps the single most important task of the legislative body – in over 1,200 days.  Carmona is on the hook to reward that record of failure, enabling Reid to continue in his role as Leader. That’s not what Arizona voters want and it’s not what America needs.

Here are some of highlights of the man that Richard Carmona would elect as his leader in the Senate:

Harry Reid Told Senator Joe Lieberman, “I Can’t Stand John McCain.” “Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., defended Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman on Wednesday after the former Democratic vice presidential nominee accepted a speaking slot at next month’s Republican convention in Minnesota. ‘He has a close personal relationship with John McCain. I don’t fully understand why he does,’ said Reid, who said Lieberman called Tuesday from the Republic of Georgia to alert him to the move. ‘I told him last night, “You know, Joe, I can’t stand John McCain.” He said, “I know you feel that way,”‘ Reid said.” (Molly Ball, “Reid Shares Senate Ideas,” Las Vegas Review Journal, 8/21/08)

Harry Reid Said That He Couldn’t Understand How A Hispanic Could Be A Republican. “U.S. Sen. Harry Reid on Tuesday slammed Republicans for blocking comprehensive immigration reform and told Hispanics they shouldn’t be treated differently because ‘their skin’s a tone darker’ than that of America’s early European immigrants. ‘I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican, OK,’ Reid said, speaking to Latino supporters whose votes he needs to win re-election in November. ‘Do I need to say more?’” (Laura Myers, “Reid: How can Hispanics be Republican?,” Las Vegas Review Journal, 8/11/10)

Harry Reid Called Opponents Of President Obama’s Health Care Bill “Evil Mongers.” “Nevertheless, the Senate majority leader invoked the e-word himself last week at an energy conference in Las Vegas, where he accused those protesting President Barack Obama’s health-care proposals of being ‘evil mongers.’ So proud was he of this contribution to the American political lexicon that he repeated it to a reporter the next day and noted the phrase was ‘an original.’” (Bill McGurn, “Harry Reid’s ‘Evil’ Moment,” Wall Street Journal, 8/18/09)

Thankfully, Arizonans have a better choice. As a member of the House of Representatives, Jeff Flake has a proven record of holding both parties accountable on issues such as runaway government spending and the corrupt practice of earmarking. In the Senate, Flake would continue to be a check and balance on both parties in order to fight for Arizona.

Richard Carmona Joins Gang of Eight Owing Big Favors to Harry Reid If Elected

Carmona Competes For Campaign Cash From Top Senate Liberal Harry Reid’s PAC Fund

PHOENIX – A PAC established by one of the nation’s topmost liberal U.S. Senators, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, chose eight liberal Democrats, including Richard Carmona of Arizona, to join him and President Obama in a quest to prevent the Senate from voting to repeal Obamacare. Reid has offered to help raise funds for the candidate who can provide him with the most email addresses.

“The prize in this odd contest is a special fundraising email from Harry Reid, which will certainly shore up any candidate’s liberal credentials, even though Carmona’s been doing that just fine all by himself,” said Arizona Republican Party spokesman Tim Sifert. “The problem is that Arizona needs a senator who will work for us, not someone like Richard Carmona who simply supports the liberal agenda of a Democrat party boss like Harry Reid.”

Richard Carmona Supporter Harry Reid Passes Massive Tax Hike

Richard Carmona Supporter and Liberal Democrat Senate Leader Harry Reid Passes Massive Tax Hike
Would Obama’s Highest Profile Democrat in Arizona, Richard Carmona, Rather Toe His Party’s Line or Listen to Taxpayers?

PHOENIX – The Democrat tax hike proposal passed by a vote of 51 to 48 in the U.S. Senate, where Democrats hold the majority, despite warnings from business groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce which urged its members to oppose the tax hike legislation.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the National Federation of Independent Business, both a widely-respected authorities on policies that create a pro-business environment and more jobs, says the Democrat tax hike will undermine economic recovery and result in 710,000 fewer jobs.

“Democrat Richard Carmona joined a party that is way out of touch with job-creators, and instead is raising taxes on the same small businesses that are trying to bring about our economic recovery,” said Arizona Republican Party spokesman Tim Sifert. “Carmona has fallen in line with the liberal Democrats, and given up trying to represent Arizona taxpayers and small business owners.”

BACKGROUND …

If 2001 and 2003 tax cuts are not extended, economy will shrink

  • Increasing taxes now will undermine economic recovery, choke off job creation, and take money out of the hands of the individuals and businesses that create jobs, spur investment, boost consumption, and promote economic growth.
  • The failure to avert a tax hike would impact every facet of the American economy. Approximately a million small businesses would face increased taxes resulting in 710,000 fewer jobs, 1.8 percent lower wages, 2.4 percent less investment, and a 1.3 percent smaller economy. Retirees and those saving for retirement would be hurt by increased investment tax rates. Businesses would have less money to invest in and create jobs as an increased estate tax rate and lower exemption amount would impose significant costs.
  • The Chamber has long urged Congress and the Administration to swiftly enact legislation that appropriately addresses America’s impending fiscal cliff. Extending all of the 2001 and 2003 rates, such as in the McConnell-Hatch alternative, would be a strong first step, but more work remains. Congress must extend all of the expired and expiring tax business tax provisions, and must act expediently to find spending cuts to replace a sequestration never intended to go into effect. (“Letter to Congress,” R. Bruce Josten, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 7/24/2012)

The Democrat Hike Will Destroy Jobs and Harm the Economy

A recent Ernst & Young report shows that the Democrats’ tax increases will:

  • Hit almost one million job creators
  • Slash 710,000 jobs
  • Cut wages by nearly 2 percent

“This legislation would raise tax rates on small businesses at a particularly fragile time for the economy, stifling growth and investment when we can least afford it.” (National Federation Of Independent Business, Letter To Senators, 7/24/12)

“This tax hike disproportionately impacts small businesses… will shrink the economy by 1.3 percent and result in the loss of 710,000 jobs.” (National Federation Of Independent Business, Letter To Senators, 7/24/12)

“…the maximum estate tax rate will revert to 55 percent while the exemption level will drop to $ 1 million. This will increase the number of estates hit with the tax from 3,600 to 46,700, including 21,700 small businesses.” (National Federation Of Independent Business, Letter To Senators, 7/24/12)

Rep. Schweikert Statement on Reid Plan: ‘This Borders on Embarrassing’

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 30, 2011
CONTACT: Rachel Semmell

Washington, D.C. – Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ), a member of the House Financial Services Committee, made the following statement after he voted against the irresponsible Reid plan:

“While our economy is on the brink of a debt disaster, it is unconscionable that President Obama and the Senate Majority still refuse any plan that will not give the president a blank check.

“The House of Representatives did the heavy lifting and passed a bipartisan plan, yet President Obama’s calls for ‘compromise’ seem to ignore this reality.

“The Reid plan borders on embarrassing. It is full of smoke and mirrors instead of common sense and math. It will have a disastrous impact on our military, does not cut close to the amount it hikes, and advertises $1 trillion in phantom cuts.

“Senator Reid continues to play games and disregard the will of the People’s House. It is clear that President Obama and the Senate Majority just don’t get it.”
