DUPNIK’S DUPLICITOUS DIATRIBE

In the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s tragic shooting at the Tucson shopping center, the one person that citizens would expect to focus on a quick response to the violence, conduct a thorough investigation, and focus on finding the culprit is none other than Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik.  Certainly, this occurred within his jurisdiction, therefore his office is the primary law enforcement agency to deal with this crisis.

Jared Loughner’s actions, the taking six lives including Federal Judge Roll, critically wounding Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was diabolically evil; and our hearts and prayers go out for the survivors and family members of the slain. Most people on both sides of the aisle forget political alliances, and are coming together in Tucson and across Arizona in support of the families.  We stand united against propagators of hate, such as the Westboro Baptist Church. In fact people from all over the state, many from the Tea Party movement are gathering together to protect the funerals from Fred Phelps’ lunatic fringe, with no political speech or sloganeering.  The Arizona Legislature unanimously passed and Governor Brewer signed a bill in record time to create ‘funeral zones’ to protect the families from additional grief. These are the actions of citizens who care about their friends who have suffered from the actions of that Saturday morning.

So HOW does this sheriff respond to this crisis?  The Democratic Pima Sheriff makes public statements, immediately after the shooting, attacking Rush Limbaugh, and right wing talk radio!  He blames the ‘political discourse’ for inciting this despicable violence!  He doesn’t stop there; appearing on Fox News to continue his claim that the shooter was ‘inspired’ by the conservative talkers, the Tea Party movement and Republicans in general.  Finally he admits there is not ONE shred of evidence to support his claims.  How is that for the chief law enforcement officer in Pima County and one of the few Democratic Sheriffs in the state?

However, as the facts and details surrounding Loughner become public, a starkly different picture emerges.  Almost immediately we hear from those who knew him well or attended class with him, describe a very troubled, anti-social high-school dropout that couldn’t hold a job, complete his college courses and caused others to feel very uncomfortable and even fear for their safety.  THEN we find out that Loughner was a registered Democrat, and listed Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto among his favorite books!  Now I’ve read the Manifesto, I know it well; however I wouldn’t ever call it one of my favorite books!  Further, even his friends describe him as a “pot-smoking leftist”.  Is this someone you would believe to be an avid listener of Rush Limbaugh or a Tea Party radical?  No, none of this makes sense, if we are to believe Sheriff Dupnik’s rantings on the very afternoon of the attack and later on Fox News.

Yet, more facts emerge that the Dupnik would rather keep hidden from public scrutiny. Loughner has had several brushes with Dupnik’s department over the years, including vandalism charges where he paid a $500 fine and complete some diversion program to wipe the conviction off his record.  It’s been reported that he has also make numerous threats to various public figures.  More than once have these death threats been made, including against Congresswoman Giffords.  One asks, why wasn’t he questioned, or even detained?  Why wasn’t Loughner adequately dealt with?  Instead as Jim Kelly in his blog “The Cholla Jumps” wrote regarding Dupnik that, “…his deputies assured the victims that he was being well managed by the mental health system”.  It was also suggested that further pressing of charges would be unnecessary and probably cause more problems than it solved as Jared Loughner has a family member that works for Pima County.”  The killer’s mother, Amy Loughner works in the Parks and Recreation Dept. and since 2002 the Director of a County park.

Oh!  Now it becomes a little clearer. A fellow employee of the county has a troubled son, and he gets ‘special treatment’!  Would anyone else been given ‘kid glove’ treatment?  Clearly not.  I don’t question a mother intervening on behalf of her son, but the Sheriff has the duty to recognize the threat and deal with it appropriately.  Dupnik completely failed in his duty as the Sheriff.  The result is six precious lives needlessly snuffed out, and tremendous suffering of Congresswoman Giffords and others whose lives are forever altered.

Then Sheriff Dupnik compounds his failures by deliberately and in a despicably cynical display of partisan deceit, attempts to divert attention from those failures by attacking conservatives both in the media and the public. He does this to cover up for those failures, knowing full well his compatriots who care nothing about the truth will pick up the cue and echo his dishonest statements; knowing full well he is lying to the public.  I expect nothing less from propagandists and provocateurs like Paul Krugman and Bernie Sanders; no one expects intelligent and responsible analysis from them. However, from the Sheriff of Pima County, Dupnik, sworn to uphold the law and protect the public he serves, we expect and deserve more.  He miserably failed all Pima County citizens, especially these victims, as well as his oath of office. For that he will be remembered long after memories of these events grow dim.

Stick to the Facts and Take the High Road 3

Democracy is noisy and messy. We see it every day. To quote Winston Churchill: “Where there is a great deal of free speech, there is always a certain amount of foolish speech.”

We have qualified candidates competing in the Republican primary. Casting accusations, mis-truths, exaggerations and false-hoods does not raise the ethical bar. Everyone has a favorite they should be promoting based on facts not vitriol.

Sticking to the facts and taking the high road is an absolute requirement for Republican candidates. Why? Because we can defeat Giffords on the facts:

 *      Gabrielle Giffords consistently voted with Nancy Pelosi, a progressive socialist, on every critical bill, e.g., the so-called $862 billion stimulus bill (without reading it), the so-called S-CHIP $33 billion expansion of government, “Cap and Trade” bill supporting the largest tax increase on the American people, the $1 trillion Affordable Health Care for America Act (also without reading it), the $200 billion Medicare Physician Payment Reform Act (removing it from the health care bill to lower costs), and the 45% inheritance tax on estates larger than $3.5 million.

 *      In an August 11, 2009 Arizona Daily Star interview, in answer to Star question, “Why is health care such a volatile issue?”

Gifford replied: “What I’ve seen in the last couple of weeks is that people want to have created for them a forum where they can be disruptive rather than actually providing me with information in a way that is going to give me their personal perspective and educating me on their point of view . . .It’s been a little troubling.”

Giffords statement that people want a forum where they can be disruptive is a “straw man.”  Which people want to be disruptive? People are angry because they cannot get a straight answer from their politicians, whether in a town hall or in an interview. Dissent is patriotic. Remember Hillary Clinton’s shrill statement that dissent is patriotic? Giffords says her position is to listen to her constituents but her behavior contradicts her words.

 *      Giffords consistently claims to be a fiscally conservative blue dog Democrat but her votes on the stimulus, health care reform and “Cap and Trade” define her a progressive-socialist fully supportive of Obama’s draconian agenda.

 *      With regard to “Cap and Trade,” Giffords claimed that the bill would reduce household energy costs by 7%. In an article, “Giffords Voting Record Will Hurt Her in the 2010 Election,” published on the Sonoran Alliance (2/19/2010), I refuted her claim and demonstrated that the bill would actually increase household energy costs by 77%.

 *      This brings us to the topic of ethics: honesty and truthfulness, in this case. Gabrielle Giffords misrepresented herself to her constituents as a fiscal conservative when she revealed herself to be just another progressive-socialist.

 *      In 2003, our intelligence Chief and the Attorney General both testified that the failure of the House of Representatives to pass FISA reauthorization has left the United States and her citizens exposed. Yet Giffords voted against FISA reauthorization, potentially endangering the United States.

 *      In March 2010, Gabrielle Giffords called for a Constitutional amendment to balance the budget . . . in 2020. Her call was disingenuous. During the past year she voted for hundreds of billions of dollars in spending, driving the economy further in debt and betraying her constituents who voted for a fiscal conservative.

Most of you are familiar with the Misery Index, which is a combination of the unemployment and inflation rates. Recently, I created the Ultimate Misery Index (UMI) that adds tax revenue and national debt as a percent of GDP. The reasons for creating the UMI were simply the rates of inflation (flat today) and unemployment do not adequately describe today’s misery.

Adding tax revenue and national debt as a percent of GDP incorporates the excessive taxation and onerous debt load we, our children and our grandchildren must carry, courtesy of President Obama, Gabrielle Giffords and the progressive-socialists in the Democratic Party.

The average UMI for Bush I’s four year term is 86.86%. Clinton’s average UMI for his two terms in office is 90.78. Bush II’s UMI average for his two terms in office is 88.17%. President Obama, in fourteen months, has achieved a draconian UMI  of 114.13%. What is astounding is Obama has increased the UMI over the average for all three previous presidents by a whopping 28% in this short period.

This is what President Obama, Gabrielle Giffords and the rest of the progressive-socialists of the Democratic Party have done to all Americans. And this is why Republicans can beat Giffords . . .  as long as we stick to the facts and take the high road with each other.

Giffords should resign as Chair of Space Subcommittee

Jesse Kelly

For Immediate Release: February 2, 2010

TUCSON, AZ. Representative Gabrielle Giffords should immediately resign as Chair of the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee. She has a clear conflict of interest from the tens of thousands of dollars her campaign has received from the aerospace industry. She took in over $10,000 in one day alone from people at large corporations such as ATK, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and United Space Alliance. These are companies who stand to make or lose millions of dollars based on decisions made by her subcommittee.

Jesse Kelly stated, “It is disgraceful that Representative Giffords has allowed herself to be compromised by special interests. How can she possibly look out for the taxpayers in District 8 when she is receiving money from the very corporations that she is supposed to oversee? It is no wonder she supported an over-budget and misguided program like the Ares 1 rocket.”

A December 20th article in the Orlando Sentinel explored a possible conflict of interest with her husband’s line of work. Now we realize the true conflict comes from large campaign donations by corporate special interests.

Representative Giffords should immediately resign from the Space and Aeronautics subcommittee or return the donations from all corporations that have business before the subcommittee.

Jesse Kelly is a candidate for Arizona’s Eighth Congressional District in the southeastern region of the state. For more information on the Jesse Kelly campaign please visit VoteJesseKelly.com.

Bonus Time for AZ Congressional Staffers

Well, as always it’s party time for Congress, and the party never stops.

PHOENIX — While dealing with the “greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression”, seven Arizona congressional representatives handed out around $300,000 in staff bonuses in late 2008.

  • Former Republican Rep. Rick Renzi, who had already been indicted on fraud charges and was serving the final days of his term, was the most generous, splitting $136,000 among 12 staff members.
  • Among House members still in office, Rep. Raúl Grijalva, a Democrat, was tops, distributing $52,000 to 16 employees.
  • Republican Jeff Flake, who gave $36,000 to 13 employees
  • Democrat Harry Mitchell gave $38,000 to 10 employees.
  • Republican Rep. Trent Franks gave $22,000 to nine employees.
  • Republican John Shadegg gave $24,000 to nine employees.
  • Democrat Ed Pastor gave $13,500 to nine employees.
  • Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick took office in 2009, replacing Renzi. An e-mailed statement from chief of staff Michael Frias said Kirkpatrick likely would award bonuses for 2009, though a final decision hadn’t been made as of November.

But it’s not just about the bonuses. It’s about the overall staff sizes of those who “represent” us. Here’s the current breakdown for the AZ Representatives through 9/30/09.

D1 – Ann Kirkpatrick (D) $469,372
D2 – Trent Franks ® $727,127
D3 – John Shadegg ® $790,536
D4 – Ed Pastor (D) $607,993
D5 – Harry Mitchell (D) $654,128
D6 – Jeff Flake ® $728,819
D7 – Raul Grijalva (D) $808,687
D8 – Gabrielle Giffords (D) $761,579

That adds up to $5.5 million ANNUALLY.  Don’t know about you, but whenever I call my congressman’s office to get an answer regarding legislation, I can NEVER get a atrraight answer.  Just the usual ‘I can pass your message along to the congressman”.   That’s a lot of money for staffers who do nothing but act as answering machines and email spammers. So the next time your congressman tells you he’s down with the struggle of the American people or he feels the pain and challenges of “folks at the grass-roots” level, remember they are still doling out tax-dollar bonus money for their “peeps”. Nice work if you can get.
