AZGOP: Cherny Supports Obama, Fails Arizona Workers

(Phoenix, AZ) – President Obama proposed increasing taxes for corporate jet owners last Saturday. The current tax law allows owners of jets to write off the depreciation over the course of seven years. Obama wants to shorten that time to five years in spite of the fact that he lobbied for the current law in his 2009 stimulus package.

And what is the position of the Arizona Democratic Party Chairman Andrei Cherny? In a recent East Valley Tribune article, Cherny was quoted as saying, “. . . ask people who are getting a tax loophole to pay for corporate jets, to sacrifice.” In total, general aviation (GA) dumps over 2.77B dollars into Arizona every year, including $855.6M in payroll. Maybe Cherny is okay with cutting manufacturing industry jobs in Arizona, but we are not.

According to General Aviation Manufacturing Association (GAMA), Arizona is currently home to 13,368 GA jobs, 314 civil use landing facilities, 6,896 active aircraft, 20,585 pilots, and 148 repair stations. Many of these companies that include AmSafe Aviation, FlightSafety International, Honeywell Aerospace, Parker Aerospace, and Universal Avionics are located in Arizona.

Baffled by Obama’s attacks on the general aviation industry, Katie Pribyl, Director of Communications for GAMA said, “U.S. general aviation manufacturing industry contributes $150B to the economy each year, and supports 1.2 million jobs.”

The word “manufacturing” is significant. Time and again, President Obama has said manufacturing jobs must be part of our recovery. However his policies amount to a punch in the stomach for manufacturing, as well as employers across the labor market. In the last week Cisco, Lockheed Martin and Borders have announced layoffs totaling over 28,000 workers.

Obama’s proposal has a lot of people saying “déjà vu”. Those old enough to remember the Luxury Yacht Tax of the 1990’s can see history repeating itself. In a failed effort to raise revenues, the government imposed a Luxury Tax of 10% on watercraft priced over $100,000. The result? Billions of dollars in lost sales, tens of thousands of lost jobs, and LOWER REVENUES!

Unfortunately, this is just another example of close minded tax-and-spend liberals believing the only solution to our fiscal crisis is to take money from the rich and give it to the poor. In reality, increasing corporate tax liability hurts everyone in the industry, including mechanics, engineers, pilots, suppliers, ground crews, repair stations, and instructors…not just the corporation itself.

It’s time the Democrats learn from the past, and avoid making the same mistakes because America cannot afford more job losses.

Arizona GOP Chairman Morrissey Applauds AG Horne Investigation into IRC Process

Phoenix, AZ – Chairman Tom Morrissey speaks on the investigation into the IRC by the Attorney General Phoenix – “I applaud the action taken today by Attorney General Horne to investigate the actions of the Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) for their outlandish action to award a contract to Strategic Telemetry for mapping consultant services. The unprecedented action by the IRC flies in the face of our state laws on many counts.

History clearly demonstrates the undeniable fact that this company is neither independent nor non-partisan. Since this process will determine the electoral lines for the next ten years, the voters of this state MUST be assured that the redistricting process is fair and balanced. In addition, there are two other firms that submitted proposals to provide the expertise for the mapping services – including the company that provided that service ten years ago with no missteps and an Arizona company with a wide-ranging expertise in Arizona communities of interest. The price tag for the proposals from these two companies, COMBINED was about the same as the proposal inappropriately approved by the IRC. Arizona taxpayers expect – no, DEMAND, better judgment from this commission.

If the Independent Redistricting Commission cannot take the first step in this process in a legal and ethical manner, Arizonans across the political spectrum will have no faith in the final redistricting plan. Republicans, Independents, Democrats and Libertarians deserve better, and I strongly support the actions of the Attorney General to protect all the citizens of our great state.”

AZGOP: Obama Recovery Kills Job Creation…Again

Phoenix, AZ – If May’s job numbers weren’t bad enough, according to the monthly jobs report, the U.S. economy created a measly 18,000 new jobs in June raising the unemployment rate from 9.1 to 9.2 percent. The unemployment rate is now two full points higher than it was in the Department of Labor’s report in January 2009—the first month of the Obama Presidency.

“This is not simply a ‘bump’ on the road to recovery. President Obama’s economic policies have totally failed,” said Arizona Republican Party Chairman Tom Morrissey. “Continuing the President’s policies will only drive up the unemployment rate further. We cannot afford these disastrous policies any longer.”

In spite of the horrible price the American public is paying for their failed policies, the Democrat entitlement crowd continues to pressure the Obama Administration for more government intervention, increased government spending and higher taxes. Additional interference into private enterprise from the government will only increase the downward economic spiral resulting in higher unemployment, more debt and fewer jobs. In a speech on the floor of the Senate on March 6, 2006, then-Senator Barack Obama said, “You don’t raise taxes in a recession.” Obviously, the left-wing extremists of his party have convinced the President to change course—yet again.

“It’s time to limit government’s involvement in the economy. This means lowering taxes, reducing regulations and creating jobs,” said Arizona Republican Party Chairman Tom Morrissey. “It doesn’t get any clearer: Obama’s failed economic policies punish small business and kill job creation. I strongly support our Republican Congressional position that calls for spending cuts with no new taxes.”

Shane Wikfors Responds to Rumors Regarding Arizona GOP Spokesman

When asked by several political reporters, Wikfors responded, “At this time, I have not been asked to serve as the spokesman for the Arizona GOP nor has anyone from the party seriously approached me about stepping into this important position.”

Wikfors went on to add that he would take any offer to serve the GOP seriously and would be honored to fulfill the role if needed.

“The party has some serious challenges in the months ahead and will clearly require individuals with unique talents and skill sets in order to continue its trajectory of success,” Wikfors added. “2012 will be a critical year for Republicans and Arizona will be on the leading edge of delivering the vote for a conservative President.”

AZ GOP: Headed in the Wrong Direction

I want to make clear that I am not affiliated with the mystery group or the website that is demanding the resignation of our Chairman via anonymous demands.   Although I feel it would be best for him to resign, Tom Morrissey is still the duly elected Chairman of our party.  As such, he deserves the respect of people willing to speak in a civil tone and under their own name about their grievances.  I am making the case that Tom Morrissey is unfortunately not the leader to lead us to victory in 2012.  I have stated the facts to the best of my knowledge and ability and even removed and re-worked the post after someone claimed an inaccuracy in the numbers.   There are many debates to be had over this issue, and I ask you to reflect in a respectful and reasoned manner as to the role of the State GOP Chairman. For the sake of a false “unity” should we cripple the party for two critical years?   We must have an effective, strong organization against the Democrats in 2012.

AZGOP: Headed in the Wrong Direction

Republican organizations across the country have made fundraising a priority for the 2012 election cycle.  The newly elected RNC Chairman, Reince Preibus, stated his priorities would be to raise enough money to compete with President Obama and erase the party’s debt. Preibus is well on his way to accomplishing these goals – the RNC announced last week they have raised $17.7 million in the 1st Quarter, with over $7 million contributed in March alone. Additionally, the RNC has reduced its debt by nearly $5 million.

So the question begs to be asked:  What has the Arizona Republican Party, under Chairman Morrissey’s leadership, done to accomplish these same goals?

Fundraising

According to FEC (Federal Election Commission) Reports, the AZGOP is headed in the wrong direction. Year-to-date, our State Party has raised $176,653.  Republican revenue was $80,129 in January, $62,526 in February and $33,998 in March. Since Tom Morrissey was elected as our State Party Chairman, revenue has dropped 46%.

The Arizona Democratic Party, on the other hand, has raised an outstanding $220,448 to date, with $70,617 in January, $72,588 in February, and $77,243 in March. 

These numbers show that Democrats are increasing their contributions even as Republicans are showing declining revenue. The Democrats have out-raised Republicans in Arizona by $91,942 in only three months.  The election of the young, dynamic Andrei Cherny has given the Democratic Party an effective leader who moved quickly to heal splits in his Democratic Party, and has given the AZGOP a formidable adversary.   It should also be noted that Cherny’s election was heavily contested; indeed, factions within the Democratic party attempted to prevent his nomination as Chairmen on procedural ground.   Despite the overwhelming Arizona Republican victories of 2010, Arizona only has an 11% Republican registration advantage and the Democrats appear to have been motivated to rally in the face of their setbacks.   We Republicans have grown complacent and the State Party under Tom Morrissey has shown the troubles this can cause.

Reducing Debt

As of February 28, 2011, the AZGOP had $7,505.41 in debt, consisting primarily of monies owed to CBIZ MHM, LLC for FEC Report Preparation.

By the end of March 2011 the Party’s debt ballooned to $73,616.67.  As Republicans at every level of government are fighting against wasteful spending, incredible deficits & unsustainable debt, the AZGOP has increased their debt by nearly 1,000% in 30 days.   It is hard to imagine the party ever previously going through a period of such staggering debt accumulation.

Where did this debt come from?

  • $20,000 in legal fees to two law firms
  • $5,149 due to T-Mobile
  • $10,062 for FEC Reporting owed to two firms 
  • $4,865 Property Taxes
  • $1,327 Reimbursement
  • $683 to Cox for Internet Service
  • $14,334 to Political Media for web page consulting
  • $17,193 for Direct Mail, Telemarking and contribution envelopes

Following are some of the questionable expenditures by the AZGOP since Morrissey became Chairman:

In March 2011, the AZGOP paid Political Media $14,334 for web page work. This is in addition to the $4,954 they paid Political Media in February for web page consulting. That brings the total year to date cost for web page consulting to a staggering $19,228.You may visit www.AZGOP.org and decide for yourself if the new website is worth nearly $20,000. 

Business leaders understand “to make money you have to spend money.” Unfortunately, the AZGOP is spending money with no results. In March, the AZGOP spent $35,574 on various fundraising efforts consisting of Direct Mail and Telemarketing. These efforts raised $33,998, resulting in a net loss of $1,575. To put this in perspective, they spent $1.05 for every dollar they brought in and considering the $20,000 website could have generated some donations, this is a generous assumption.

The AZGOP spent $4,000 in March to lease a copy machine, and also spends $140 per month for a landscaper to maintain the grounds (ie. the half dozen trees scattered around the rock and asphalt) at headquarters. One can easily make the argument the State Party is wasting the money it is raising, and not spending it on the essentials.   Those that attended the April Executive Guidance Committee meeting realized that the extravagant spending of the AZGOP does indeed have its limits – the air conditioning was broken.  Rob Haney has moved the May meeting as well due to the air conditioner being still in need of repair, and recently noted that he has reserved locations to hold the meetings outside the Republican Headquarters in June and July, with reservations for August and September are in progress as well.  Although I cannot speak on behalf of the Maricopa Republican Chairman, I hope he is not alluding that the Republican Headquarters expects to be without air conditioning for the entire summer.

The Arizona Republican Party needs true leadership, a leader who can fill our war chests for the inevitable redistricting fight that will influence Arizona politics for the next decade. We are all aware the Democrats will file suit in every case where the district boundaries do not serve their interests, and right now we do not have the financial resources to fight any legal battle. In fact, we have already taken ourselves deeper into debt with $20,000 of unpaid legal fees.  Sadly, the Arizona Democrats, who are in the exact same position with new party leadership, seem to be gearing up for this fight.  They have out raised and out spent us without accruing any additional debt.

The Arizona Republican Party seems to be on a fast track to bankruptcy and demise from internal and external destruction.  We need a consistent, qualified leader that can fundraise and ultimately, unite the party when it really matters. Without this unity, we are not only diminishing our ability to defeat Obama in 2012, but also risking our majority Arizona Congressional Delegation, and the super-majorities we have gained in the Arizona House and Senate. With the 2012 election right around the corner we need a strong State Party more than ever, and so far we have yet to see the results or actions we need.

I, personally, did not support Tom Morrissey for State Chairman.  However, I feel that barring extraordinary circumstances, it is important to support a State Chair.  Unfortunately, these are extraordinary circumstances.  Asking for a State Chair to step down is a very serious matter, and should not be taken lightly or for reasons of philosophical differences.  It should only be done in times of grave crisis.   I fear we are heading for that crisis.

Arizona Republicans need a leader who can be effective in preparing our State Party for the challenges that await us in 2012. Tom Morrissey is not that man. Tom Morrissey is not a leader.

Dear Friends, Supporters and Fellow Conservatives,

First and foremost my wife Julia and I wanted to thank everyone for their overwhelming support and faith in my ability to lead the Republican Party in the State of Arizona. We would also like to congratulate Tom Morrissey for his victory as AZGOP Chairman. This experience has humbled our family and has increased our growing love for those valiant souls working so hard to protect our God-given freedoms in this blessed nation.

We have witnessed and participated in an historic movement to return to the principles and values which made this great nation. TEA Parties and other conservative activist groups lead the charge in defending our freedoms. Their efforts are tireless and never ending. Transparency, participation and accountability are hallmark outcomes as we fought and continue to fight to secure the blessings of liberty.

We must not forget the purpose, goal and privilege our forefathers bestowed upon us when drafting the Constitution of the United States of America.

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” – Preamble, Constitution of the United States of America

Voters define election outcomes, including disappointments, victories, success and failures. Regardless of whether your candidate won or lost, do not lose your enthusiasm, your commitment or your courage to keep up the fight against those so willing to erode the fabric of this great nation.

As I said in my speech… “We stand for something and what we stand for is the complete opposite of our liberal opponents. I didn’t say Democrats. I said liberals because liberalism is the disease we are fighting and you can be sure that liberals don’t just exist in the Democrat Party.”

Even in the Preamble of the Constitution, the goal is stated “…form a more perfect Union.” With unity around the correct values and principles we will find strength to defend. We will find momentum to succeed and we will find courage in numbers.

To build this great party we must:

  1. Invite everyone who believes in Freedom.
  2. Invite everyone who believes in the Constitution.
  3. Invite everyone who believes Personal Responsibility.
  4. Invite everyone who believes Life is sacred and the Family is supreme.
  5. Invite everyone who believes our Rights are God-given.

With this momentum we must renew our determination to restore the Republican values to the White House. Do your best to support your newly elected Republican state leaders. The best leaders will learn from you and grow from your examples. Don’t dilute your effort with the pride of this outcome. It is time to renew our commitment and go to work.

We love and respect all of you. We have promised my commitment and we will work to build the party, increase transparency and raise the bar of accountability. The Grahams are not going anywhere!! Let us work together to build our party. Furthermore, let us make every effort to find victory for our values in the upcoming elections.

I don’t believe the Marty Hermanson is getting enough coverage here on Sonoran Alliance so I’m posting this video so the rumor about Marty Hermanson’s loyalties can be cleared up.

While I was on JD Hayworth’s campaign team, Marty made frequent visits to our office to make sure we were getting equitable treatment in Pinal County. He made sure that JD Hayworth was given top billing at a Maricopa TEA Party event. I am grateful that he treated our campaign with respect and fairness.

I happen to believe that Marty Hermanson will make an excellent State Chairman and I know that every candidate will be treated fairly under his watch. I also have his pledge to spend precious donor dollars with consultant vendors who offer the highest quality for the lowest bid.

Tomorrow when Republicans gather to elect the next Chairman, they should consider Marty Hermanson as their next Chairman.

Robert Graham Announces for AZ GOP Chairman!

Although it was clearly an orchestrated effort on the part of some very committed conservatives and Tea Party members, I have still been moved by the encouragement I have gotten to run for Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party.  While it was not a part of any plan I had for my life at this point, after prayerful consideration and talking it over with my wife, I have decided to enter the race for Chairman.

I am not running against anyone. But I am definitely running FOR a great many things:

FOR a strong and passionate defense of our party’s ideals and values.

FOR a well-funded and well-organized party that will defeat Barack Obama and recapture Congressional seats currently held by liberal Democrats.

FOR a victory in the race for the new Congressional district Arizona is getting.

FOR a professionally managed Party and a media presence (both new and traditional media) that is first-class and first-rate.

FOR the grassroots conservatives and Tea Party members who have infused our Party with energy and a recommitment to conservative ideals.

I am a successful businessman and I have been blessed with a wonderful family. Arizona is my home and I have long believed that we all have a duty to give back to our community. I was content to do so as a Precinct Committeeman and State Committeeman, until your phone calls and emails came. You have objected to the choices currently available to you and in some cases to the manner in which they have become available. So I offer myself as an alternative. We might win, we might lose, but the people of our great party deserve an alternative that is running for all the RIGHT reasons.

Scott Bundgaard informed me late last night that after being asked to get into the race for the Chairmanship, he declined because “with Tom Morrissey entering the race this afternoon, it appears as if conservatives will have a candidate.” I agree with Sen. Vision Statement – Tom Morrissey

As the conservative candidate for Arizona State Republican Chairman, I am firmly convinced that an abrupt change in course is required to take on the Democrat challenge in 2012. Therefore, I have stepped forward for the office of Chairman, bringing considerable skills, decades of contacts, and unbounded passion to this position. With my leadership, we will expand our 2010 legislative victories and assist conservative candidates for county, municipal and school board positions across our great state.

City elections are just a few months away, and we have already lost precious time in this effort. In 2010, the wind was at our backs and the Democrats did not see us coming. We can’t count on the general political atmosphere to be so favorable two years from now. We need a statewide effort to consolidate our gains and achieve even greater successes.

First and foremost, we will succeed only by blending the political savvy and institutional memory of our dedicated long-standing conservative Precinct Committeemen with the passion and vigor demonstrated by our newly elected members from the Tea Party movement. Secondly, we must raise the necessary financial resources to get our principled, positive message to the average voter being bombarded by our opponents in the main stream media. Your input of time and treasure are critical as we build on the successes of 2010 and create historic victories across our state in 2011 and 2012.

To that end, we must put in place a new and much more sophisticated communications strategy if we are to succeed in the next election. The old way of doing business — selling half-truths, calling in favors, and pulling out the same old last-minute tactics in a community that hardly knows us – will not cut it with today’s skeptical voters. We must rely on the advances of technology, heavier community involvement, social networking and the whole spectrum of fundraising methods to win this battle.

We are in the fight of our lives to protect our Constitution, our individual freedoms and restore a bright future for our children and grandchildren. We must win national, state and local leadership positions, or be doomed to the socialist state we see coming. Our very survival as the light on the hill is at stake and it is critical that we surprise the opposition with a much better process than we have utilized in the past. Good is no longer good enough. Best is what we must achieve.

Based on my experience, knowledge and vision, I am the right choice at the right time for the job. I will hit the ground running with a plan and the energy to carry it to a fruitful conclusion. We all want our country back and we want our liberty back. I promise to serve you, the backbone of this great Party, with the full measure of my time and energy, and I respectfully ask for your vote.

Statement: Scott Bundgaard on AZGOP Chairman’s Race

Scott BundgaardRecently, several groups of conservative activists asked me to run to help drive a conservative agenda among party activists state-wide and to help raise money for the GOP. Since Tom Morrissey jumped in to run, I removed myself from consideration in order to prevent splitting the conservative vote. I’ll continue to work with my legislative colleagues to reform government and reinvigorate our economy.

In the meantime, thank you to all of you who called, emailed, and texted me urging me to run. Your passion was inspirational and I look forward to fighting the good fight with you for years to come.
