STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX (Nov. 23, 2011) – House Speaker Andy Tobin released the following statement today:

“With the Supreme Court having clearly overstepped its bounds, I continue to believe that the reinstatement of Colleen Mathis as chairwoman of the Independent Redistricting Commission represents a dangerous threat to the independent process Arizona voters want and deserve. I fully support any and all efforts by the Governor to immediately remove Chairwoman Mathis and call the Legislature into special session to refer a measure to the ballot allowing voters the opportunity to repeal this commission, which has shown total disregard for the Arizona Constitution. We must act immediately to ensure that this broken and biased process does not continue to unfold.”

Decided to look at Strategic’s application from the IRC web site. Their previous client base is almost completely if not all, Liberal and Democrats. I’m shocked that this company was approved.

    Agreed!

Sour grapes. This is what the to voters approved. Outcome may not match intent, but here we are. BTW, the two Reps on the board approved Mathis same as the Dems did.

    • It’s more than sour grapes. This board did NOT deal straight, and still refuses to cooperate with transparency bare minimums. WHat did they ASSURE people in order to get votes, and what have they DONE since?

The IRC is not competent to contnue to work on the maps. Mrs. Mathis must remove herself now or
be removed again. She is not an independent, she voted a straight Dem. ticket.

    • First, impeach and then remove from office the justices who voted to reinstate Mathis.
      Second, remove Mathis again.
Third, if the state Supreme Court reinstates Mathis, restart the process at the first step.
Fourth, appoint someone who is truly independent.
Fifth, draw some reasonable district boundaries.

Not only will we get better redistricting, we will also clean the “benevolent tyrants” out of the judiciary who are constantly exceeding their authority because they think they are smarter than everyone else regardless of the subject matter or whether it is even actually any of their business.

Unless the Republican legislators are willing to stick together to do this and the governor and attorney general are willing to support them, the justices will continue to run over the other branches of government. There are times to be reasonable and easy going; this is not one of them unless you think judicial tyranny is better than a republic with a legislature and governor performing their constitutional functions and answering to the people.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Republican legislators will stand up to the justices. Pathetic! Why bother working to get 2/3 majorities if the people we elect don’t use them to advance our causes?
