Small Business Backs Paton in Newly Formed 1st Arizona Congressional District

NFIB cites candidate’s strong voting record on small business issues

PHOENIX, ARIZ., October 16, 2012 – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) today announced its support for former state legislator Jonathan Paton in the newly drawn 1st Congressional District.

Jonathan Paton

“Jonathan Paton was a solid defender of small business in the Arizona Legislature and his views on federal issues are perfectly consistent with the positions identified by our members in Arizona,” said Lisa Goeas, NFIB Vice President of Political and Grassroots.  “He was a strong voice for small business in Phoenix and our members are counting on his leadership in Washington.”

NFIB ballots its members to identify their positions on key federal and state issues.  The organization tracks the votes of every member of Congress and the respective legislatures and applies a score from zero to 100 percent (the best).  As a member of the Arizona Legislature, Paton earned a lifetime 82 percent score with NFIB.  His opponent, former one-term member of Congress Ann Kirkpatrick, voted with small business only 43 percent of the time during her tenure.

“Arizona small business owners want a representative in Washington who will do more than talk about supporting their interests,” said NFIB Arizona State Director Farrell Quinlan.  “We worked closely with Jonathan Paton in the state legislature and our members trust him to vote for small business on the tough issues.”

Paton’s endorsement comes from NFIB’s Save America’s Free Enterprise Trust (SAFE), the association’s political action committee, and is based on positions regarding key small-business issues including health care, taxes, and labor and regulatory issues.

Small-business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to go to the polls. NFIB will encourage its members in Arizona to help turn out the small-business vote for Jonathan Paton this coming Election Day.
