Shadegg Condemns Fake Energy Bill

Shadegg: “This bill is an election year political maneuver by Washington Democrats, not a genuine effort to increase America’s energy supply and bring relief to the American public.”

Washington, Sep 17 – Congressman John Shadegg (R-AZ) last night made the following statement in opposition to the Democrats’ no-energy package:

“This bill is an election year political maneuver by Washington Democrats, not a genuine effort to increase America’s energy supply and bring relief to the American public.

It gives states the final authority to approve leases, yet does not let them share in the revenue from exploration and development—intentionally removing the incentive for coastal states to allow new leases.  It confines exploration to 50 miles off our coasts, purposely placing much of our known oil and natural gas reserves off limits.  It fails to open Alaska’s vast resources to exploration and development, keeping more than 10 billion barrels of oil out of the hands of American consumers.  It locks up oil shale.  It creates no new oil refineries.  It builds no new nuclear power plants.  And, it places a $19 billion tax burden on already struggling American businesses and consumers.

Even if a lease is issued as a result of this bill, it will not lead to the production of a single barrel of oil because it will be legally challenged by fringe environmental groups.  They have already challenged 100% of leases in the Alaskan OCS, every single lease issued as a result of the 5 year national OCS leasing program, and thousands of leases out West.  Not one lease has been able to move forward towards production.  In failing to pass legislation to keep these groups from blocking energy production, Democrat leaders have ensured that the bill passed tonight is meaningless.  Sadly, the American people will continue to suffer.”
