Replacing Senator Flake

The Navajo County Board of Supervisors have some mighty shoes to fill when they replace the late Senator Jake Flake. The Board may make that replacement as early as today.

Three names have been proposed by a panel established by the Supervisors:

Sylvia Tenney Allen, a real-estate agent and former GOP county chairman. Allen is also a candidate for one of the State House seats.

Charlie Hendrickson, a current city council member for the town of Snowflake and a manager with APS.

Gerry Whipple, a current city council member for the town of Show Low. Whipple also served as mayor and is a member of the Arizona League of Cities and Towns.

Thanks to our readers for bringing clarity to this post. Representative Bill Koponicki is not eligible to serve because he resides in a different county than the late Senator Flake. State law requires that a replacement be chosen from the same county. Legislative district 5 spans several counties.

Rep. Konopnicki was ineligible to fill Senator Flake’s vacancy because he resides in a different county. For purposes of filling a legislative vacancy the person has to come from the county within the legislative district in which the person resided.

  2. Live Free or Die says

Koponicki is not eligible, he doesn’t live in the same county as Flake did.

  3. Allen is a solid conservative. Not sure about the other two.
