Remembering Kerry Martin

It is with incredible sadness that we report that Kerry Martin, wife of state Treasurer Dean Martin, has died in childbirth.  Their son Austin remains in critical condition, and we pray for him as well as Kerry’s entire family as what should have been a period of unspeakable joy has suddenly and unexpectedly turned into a time of unimaginable sorrow.

I have known Kerry and Dean for many years.  Kerry was an incredibly warm person and dedicated Republican, always working hard to advance the causes she believed in.  Kerry was also a guaranteed friendly face at GOP gatherings, no matter how early in the morning.

Needless to say, I am absolutely floored.  Dean, your family is in our prayers.  Kerry, you will be remembered fondly by all of us and you will be missed.

The State Treasurer’s Office issued the following statement.

Condolences can be sent to

  1. very sad says

Kerry was a true partner for Dean in life and in politics. I can only imagine how he must feel right now. I am truly and profoundly sorry for the loss.

  2. Antifederalist says

I volunteered to help Dean Martin run for Senate the first time he ran and knocked off Tom Horne. I’ve been friends with the Martins ever since. It’s surreal that Kerry is gone and that Dean’s son is in grave condition, especially since my wife and I got the news that the Martins were expecting when we visited with them in December. Also, Dean’s son was a bigger baby than ours.

If you’re reading, we love you, man. Your loss is devastating, I know. Love on that kid and he’ll pull through. They tend to be fighters at that age (my son was) and your love and affection will go a long way to give him strength. I hope he’s as much of a joy to you as my son is to me. God’s given you a precious gift to take the edge off your loss. Cherish the hell out of him. I’ll have to hug my wife and son a little tighter when I get home tonight. Also, remember Dean, Go doesn’t give us any more adversity than we can handle and it’s the rough times that build character. We wish you the best!!

  3. I am extremely shocked and saddened by this terrible news.

Please pray for Dean, Austin and the Martin Family at this very tragic time.

Our love and prayers are with you.

  4. George of the Desert says

My prayers are with Dean and Austin. This is an unbearably sad situation.

  5. SonoranSam says

It isn’t necessary to be a conservative to feel just a tiny bit of Dean’s pain at this moment. Let’s all think about him and his family, and offer up any prayers that we have in our hearts.

  6. Unbelievably bad news. Hang in there Dean, you are in our thoughts.

  7. Tucson Mark says

Thoughts and prayers need to be with Dean, Austin and their family. Such a tragedy and SonoranSam is right. Be you liberal or conservative, we all feel Dean Martin’s pain during this time.

  8. Veritas Vincit says

Having known Dean personally for years, I cannot begin to express how deeply I wish I could ease his pain.

Dean, you’re in my prayers good friend. Godspeed

  9. Sydney Hay says

Dearest friend Dean, At the capitol today, all were in shock at the news. Words fail. Yet, God’s love never fails. May His tender mercy and comfort enfold you. May his lovingkindness sustain you and may the memory of Kerry’s infectious, sweet smile carry you through this unspeakably difficult hour. You and baby Austin are in Dan’s and my prayers, Sydney

Words simply are not enough to express how profoundly sorry I am for your loss. It is unthinkable and horribly upseting to all that know you. Kerry was a true gem, one of a kind. Please know that you are loved and that people are ready to help you in this most difficult time.

    God Bless You..

  11. Dean,

When you look back at these posts, please know how much so many people thought of you, remembered Kerry, and prayed for you and Austin. God Bless and comfort you now and in all the days ahead.

    Your friend, Bill

  12. Cathi Herrod says

I just echo what Sydney wrote. We all were in shock at the news today. Our prayers and hearts go out to Dean. I saw Dean and Kerry a week ago tonight at our CAP dinner –full of life and excitement about the pending due date of their son. May our gracious God who never leaves us nor forsakes us sustain you during this time. May He especially breathe life and health into precious baby Austin.

  13. My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Martin and Family during this very difficult time. Kerry was a very kind and loving person.

  14. Terrible. I hope he can find solace in faith, family, and friends.

  15. I just wanted to say that your family is in our prayers during this difficult time. My son’s name is Austin Michael and i just had to leave a message for you in hopes that GOD is watching over your precious baby boy. Our deepest sympathies are with your families.
