Nathan Sproul Drops Another Bomb in LD-18

Nathan Sproul, the former Executive Director of the Arizona Christian Coalition and the Arizona Republican Party has dropped another hit piece via his Mesa Deserves Better political action committee against Republican Senate candidate Russell Pearce as is now being reported in The Phoenix New Times.

This time, Nathan Sproul attempts to link Representative Russell Pearce to JT Ready, a Neo-Nazi activist in the East Valley who snagged a photo of him and Pearce during a local event in 2007. The Phoenix New Times obtained the photo and has since paraded it through their rag as part of a strategy to oppose border security advocates while promoting rampant illegal immigration.

The interesting aspect to all this is that Sproul appears to have found a political ally in The Phoenix New Times which covered the downfall of Nathan’s former boss and associate, Thomas Grabinski, who as legal counsel for The Baptist Foundation of Arizona, was convicted of defrauding investors and is currently serving time in state prison. We wonder how long it will take for the Phoenix New Times to run the photo of Grabinksi and Sproul together?

  1. Is that it? That’s all you’ve got? I think Pearce has some explaining to do. If the photo was such a chance encounter, then why did Pearce endorse Ready? Sounds like they were pretty tight to me. Wasn’t the photo taken at a rally where Ready and Pearce were co-presenters? Also, how can Russell Pearce explain forwarding that despicable white power email to his supporters. He said he got it from a friend. What kind of friends does this guy keep? Now that I think about it, maybe Pearce ought to save his explanations. His actions have said enough.

  2. Keen Observer says

Sproul is taking plays right out of the Clinton Handbook. Remember the liberals tried to do the same thing when Pres. Bush took a picture with that porn star in California. It was wrong for the Liberals to do it, it’s wrong for Sproul to do it.

  3. While it’s possible that Pearce was unaware of JT’s Nazi sympathies, he was definitely a strong supporter of JT’s run for Mesa City Council in 2006. In fact Pearce and Karen Johnson both recorded telephone messages on behalf of Ready that were distributed to Mesa voters via autodialers. The picture of Ready and Pearce is no happenstance occurence, the two men know each other very well and have been allies in the past.

  4. I’ve always liked Russell, but I’ve always been concerned about his naivete. I guess we can all be sucked in when people say nice things about us. But the judgment error that really bothers me is that when he takes strong, public, central positions on an issue where he is seen as defending “White” Arizona against the “marauding horde” of illegal brown people (please note all the quotation marks), he has to understand that this tracks John Birch and KKK doctrine. In doing so, he should have been extra careful to distance himself from that element, because while we can argue about the merits of strong or weak immigration enforcement at a local level, I would hope to all that is right that we are not allowing ourselves to justify midnight lynchings and Jim Crow laws. He has done little to protect himself from these attacks. I want to believe it is because he has been naive and unskeptical. But it is certainly a lesson he should have learned by now.

  5. That’s Nathan Sproul ? He’s Hot !!!

    Yummy looking dude !

  6. West Mesa Voter says

    Ho Hum, John, Jack,

As someone who has voted for Russell Pearce along with many of my neighbors, I sure hope you are not suggesting that we are all a bunch of racists? If you are, then you just insulted the voters of West Mesa!

  7. I find it interesting to note as pointed out on http://www.thoughtsonmesa.blogspot.com, Nathan Sproul is no saint either.

As the former Executive Director of Arizona Christian Coalition, he worked hand in hand with a man who is now serving time for fraud.

Sproul was regional president of Voyager Learning which was implicated in political kick backs.

Sproul’s fomer company was implicated in large scale voter fraud and was investigated by the ferderal government.

So I don’t think that Mr. Sproul has any room to question anybodies ethics.

  8. He’s dirty, his politics are dirty, and his friends are dirty. Be gone Nathan Sproul, and take your gutter politics with you!

  9. Monk,
The same can be said of Russell Pearce and he’s the one running for public office.

  10. Am I the only one to note that Gibbons declined to submit a piture or statement for the Statewide & Legislative Candidate States phamphlet?

Oh, and BTW, Bee is getting heat for using Sproul.

  11. Sproul might not be clean, but he’s right. This is a battle for the party that’s been a long time coming. Guys like Kyl/Flake/Salmon/Shadegg on one side – guys like Pearce/Arpaio/Pullen on the other.

This started in 2002 when Arpaio backed Napolitano over Salmon – but took a big turn for the worse when team Pullen/Arpaio sided with those protesting Kyl and Flake over immigration reform. I may not have been happy about Kyl supporting the Kennedy Bill – but watching “nativists” march and carry signs questioning Jon Kyl’s conservative credentials made me sick.

Give me Jon Kyl and Jeff Flake over Russell Pearce and Joe Arpaio seven days a week.

  12. Come on SA, do a bit of homework. I expect this from the Republic…JT and Russell are more than just a photo op. They are friends, both have said so publicly many times, and Russell helped prop up JT’s ill fated run for city council. Not to mention Russell got JT to run for the legislative seat many years ago. In District 18, their friendship isn’t even hidden, nor is it a secret.

Seriously, how many Nazi’s do any of us proclaim to be a friend? I can hang out with Democrats and not be one, but hang out with a Nazi and not be??? I don’t know.

Pearce might be right on immigration, but in politics the messenger is important. And trying to explain away this picture as a random photo tells you all you need to know. He is lying about his relationship with JT.

  13. I applaud Sproul for taking on Pearce. People need to know the real Russell Pearce and what the real Russell Pearce stands for.

  14. Sorry Keaton, but Salmon was/is a Pearce supporter. Check your facts!

  15. Romney’s publicly backing McCain – does that make them buddies?

My point is that in 2002 things were good in the party (nationally and locally) – and today the party is divided. Immigration is the reason. Sproul said as much, and no matter what you think of him personally (or that first flyer that was despicable) he’s right.

Heck, look at the board. One post defends Pearce – the next defends Sproul.

  16. First, as has been said in a few previous posts, this was a lame attempt at an attack on Nathan.

Second, Sonoran Alliance goes absolutely bananas when a Republican has a Democrat over to his house for a bbq, yet looks the other way when Pearce pals around with a neo-Nazi and endorses him for city council, does auto dials for him, etc.

    Huh?

I understand your desire to say, “consider the source,” but what about looking at the behavior described in the mailers?

There’s no getting around it: domestic violence should be condemned and associating with neo-Nazis should be condemned irrespective of who’s bringing these behaviors to light.

Let’s not pull a John Edwards (pre-Friday) and say, “these are supermarket tabloid rumors, trash,” in an attempt to deflect attention away from the bad behavior.

  17. Pearce may have been nailed but don’t foget that the aim of Sproul and his band of contributors and supporters is to gut the employer sanctions law. Do we owe Sproul a thank you for exposing Pearce? I’m not going that far but just remember this: when Sproul sets his sights on YOU and plays the race card as he seeks to overturn Employer Sanctions and calls YOU racist for supporting a good piece of legislation because that’s what’s coming next.

And if he overturns Employer Sanctions, even more people will die in overloaded Suburbans rolling over when there is again an incentive to come to Arizona illegally and work.

I’m not going to defend Pearce, he’s going to have to do that for himself and solve this one but when Nathan pulls the A=B and B=C argument it’s going to go like this: Pearce is a racist, Pearce supports Employer Sanctions, therefore people who support Employer Sanctions are racist so we need to overturn the law. Just wait.

  18. Sproul’s constant run-ins with Attorney Generals across this country happened in the last four years, and he gets a pass by the Three Johns? Sure, because he works for them. He takes all the muck and slime working in the arena they have hired him for. As long as Sproul is in the headline and not McCain or Kyl or Shadegg or Kolbe or Flake and they get the results they want – -.

This is all about workplace enforcement and the hundreds of millions in blood money the financial contributors of the Congressmens’ friends can deposit in their bank accounts, nothing more, nothing less.

I resist Biblical passages for foundation, but “The Love of Money IS (still) the root of all evil.” Not for itself, but for the power its owners can derive from it. This is a fight of good versus evil, and we better get it right.

  19. We Hold These Truths says

    Jack,
You show you ignorance by trying to tie the KKK and The John Birch Society together. The KKK is a racist group, while the John Birch Society is a constitutionalist pro freedom limited government organization that never was racist.
    Please get your facts stright

  21. Pricinct Committeeman says

Sproul has proven two things: (1) he is a shallow Christian and (2) he want to let illegal aliens run all over Arizona.

The first is between him and God. The second, well, how many policemen have to be killed, how many women raped, and how many children molested before we say enough is enough with illegal aliens. Go back to Mexico and keep committing crimes there, don’t come here – you will be arrested for breaking our laws.

Russell Pearce has faults, just like you. But, he is targeting for one reason and one reason only. He wants illegal immigrants out of Arizona.

I’d vote for him in a heartbeat. And, I reject Sproul no matter how “hot” he may appear. A man should be what a man says he is.

  22. The open borders, cheap illegal alien labor supporters have vowed to defeat anyone who stands up against them no matter the cost in blood or treasury to American citizens.
“The selfish spirit of commerce knows no country, and feels no passion or principle but that of gain. 1809 Thomas Jefferson
These words still hold true today as evidenced by the attacks of those who would stand up to them.

  23. John,

Do you have proof that Russell Pearce and Karen Johnson recorded auto dials for JT Ready and endorsed him?

  24. There was an article in the Arizona Republic about the endorsement. The article did say the Pearce and Johnson endorsed Ready. It is not available for free, you have to pay to view it now?

  25. What a boob, Sproul decries Hayworth in the New Times on Aug 6 “If we allow the fringe element of the Russell Pearce, J.D. Hayworth, John Birch Society wing of the party to become the dominant voice as to what the Republican Party in Arizona believes, we will be a minority party for a very long time in this state. ” then two days later uses JD to back his, Sproul’s, own side of the argument in the Nazi flyer. Talk about a “new found respect” of convenience for Hayworth by Sproul.

  26. Howard Levine says

I have known Russell Pearce for 4 years. During that time, I have never gotten even a hint of him being anti-semitic or racist. I received the Nazi email that people talk about and I also received Russell’s profuse apologies both in email and in person. There is no question that this was a mistake and that his apology was sincere.

Furthermore, JT Ready is not running for Precinct Committeeman this year. It is likely that if he ever tries in the future, he will face firm opposition. This is undoubtedly due to good leadership in the Republican Party – especially in the LD 18 leadership which includes Russell Pearce since he is an elected legislator who works closely with the LD 18 GOP leaders.

Russell tries to disseminate a lot of information to a lot of people quickly. Mistakes happen. However, anyone who tries to circulate information quickly rather than carefully control their message can mistakenly send out something bad. In general, it is easy to criticize people for doing something wrong when they are doing things. Russell, at least, makes a sincere apology when he does make a mistake. It should be noted that many of the critics avoid criticism by doing very little or nothing.

The accusations against Russell being circulated by Nathan Sproul are baseless.

  27. Brigham Young says

JUST SAY NO TO AMNESTY FOR PEARCE!!!!!!

  28. kralmajales says

    UH…”We Hold thes Truths”,

So say that the John Birch Society isn’t or never was racist is remarkably wrong.

The John Birch Society, no so secretly, led the efforts against desegration of schools in the south and north. They supported Segregation and candidates who proclaimed “Segregation Now, Segregation Forever”.

This is a subject that most Republicans I know think is a shameful era of the Democratic party and later the Republican party in the 60s and early 70s.

  29. John Birch and KKK are fellow travelers. It is common knowledge and well established. Sinn Fein is the political arm of the IRA. Association with one connotes a strong inclination to associate with, or be supportive of, the other. Pro-freedom groups should be supportive of freedom universally, not for some versus others.

  30. Jacks Counter says

    Jack,

This could have also been written as.

“La Raza and the Mexican Mafia are fellow travelers. It is common knowledge and well established. Sinn Fein is the political arm of the IRA. Association with one connotes a strong inclination to associate with, or be supportive of, the other. Pro-freedom groups should be supportive of freedom universally, not for some versus others.”

  31. Julie –

I don’t have recordings of the messages from Pearce and Johnson on behalf of Ready, but I know they happened.

  32. So when will we hear about the child rape charges against Nathan Sproul?
