My Concerns with Jim O’Connor

By Chris Herring

As the newly elected MCRC Chairman I feel it is vitally important that the relationship between the county party and the AZGOP be healed. Discord between the two has festered for too long, makes the party weaker, and is a public black eye to the conservative cause.

Key to a healthy working relationship is a foundation of trust. Trust that no matter our disagreements we all work towards the same goals, Republican victories, not personal ambitions.

Unfortunately I now have serious concerns regarding my ability to trust one of the candidates who may direct the AZGOP if elected.

Below you will see outlined multiple occasions over the last several months where I was purposefully lied to and misled by Jim O’Connor. The below have nothing to do with his personal politics or his goals for the party, on which O’Connor stated to me personally that we largely are in agreement. These examples show that with repeated actions by Jim, I cannot trust what he tells me face to face, looking me in the eye.

On September 7th Jim pulled me aside in the office of the AZGOP to discuss his intent to run for AZGOP chairman. I told Jim during this conversation of my intent to run for county chairman. Jim was aware that I was thinking about running and that was one reason he wanted to talk to me. He wanted to assure me that he would stay neutral no matter who may run against me. He said it was important he stayed neutral because if we both won we would need to work together. I agreed with him. Unfortunately he was lying.

After the meeting I was pulled aside by another person in attendance and informed that Jim was attempting to recruit a candidate to run against me and was trying to organizing meetings for people to meet the possible candidate. The exact opposite of staying neutral as he went out of his way to assure me just hours before. I never asked him to do that. He intentionally pulled me aside to try and deceive me.

Over the next two months I was contacted on multiple occasions by PCs across the county stating that Jim had personally talked to them and shared his negative feelings about me. Fortunately for me some of the people he was speaking with knew me personally and knew that the misinformation he was spreading was false.

Finally I had enough. I reached out to Jim through mutual friends and asked him to speak. I shared the information I had been told about him talking to others about me. Jim responded that he “had concerns” but had never reached out to me about them. He also shared that he had indeed been trying to personally recruit someone to run against me but despite significant effort hadn’t found anyone. This conversation took place on December 1st.

I invited him to ask anything he wanted and he spent over 2 hours doing just that. When we were done Jim said he felt we were far more aligned than he thought, I had addressed all his concerns, and he had no plans to back anyone else for county chair. Wonderful.

Unfortunately that was also untrue. Jim left the call stating he would set up meetings for me to meet other PCs so they could get to know me. Of course this never happened.

Twice more I met with Jim in December both on the phone and face to face, meetings he initiated. I asked about meetings he said he would arrange, he said he still would and praised me on the good job I was doing on my campaign.

Unfortunately he was secretly helping my opponent. I didn’t share with Jim but I was already aware that his continued outreach to me was disingenuous. But I wanted to see if he would come clean or continue going out of his way to lie to me.

As the election approached I stopped talking to Jim. Unfortunately he didn’t stop his deception. The day of the election he expressed well wishes and praise to me. After the election PCs came up to me and shared that Jim was personally going around to PCs during voting asking them not to vote for me.

It’s fine that he opposed me. It’s an election, people pick sides. But how can I trust someone who consistently went out of their way to privately pull me aside and then repeatedly lie and try to convince me I should trust him, when he was actively working against me.

If deception, deceit, and back room shenanigans are what you want for the AZGOP then vote for O’Connor. But don’t expect this county chair to trust a thing he says or does. I’m done believing his lies.

  1. Constitutional AZ patriot says:

What a crock. This coming from the rabble raiser that for months disrupted the EGC meeting with annoying interruptions and complaints. Let’s see who is next on the list to be defamed and yeah that kind of attack should really help raise funds for the county.

  2. Why are so many on the side of McCain, it shocks me – Jim is definitely not a McCainiac.

  3. Tom Dodson says:

Very uncomfortable that this attack on one of the State GOP Chair candidates is the first act by our new Maricopa Co. Chairman. I want him to succeed but this qualifies as divisiveness in my book. I already forgave him for slamming Trump during the Primary on Television but do not talk unity and then do this. Respect the choice of the SC Body. Very disappointed and I miss Tyler Bowyer. I intend to listen to all candidates on Saturday and cast my vote as I see fit. This attack will in no way have any sway in that decision..

  4. This isn’t an “attack”, just someone revealing the TRUTH.about O’Connor.
If you can’t see that, you must not be very bright.

I’m glad Chris Herring is speaking up. It’s easy for someone to manage a fake public persona to people who have little chance to interact with him. It’s helpful to know that O’Connor isn’t trustworthy in his affairs. This sways me toward one of the other two candidates. And honestly, I want to know who is going to get the work done to win elections. O’Connor looks like the drama candidate. I want the “Republicans win” candidate. Lines may be the guy.

  6. Daniel J. Schultz says:

    Very disappointing.

    Let’s stick with facts.

I was at this meeting of the MCRC, and I observed Chris Herring, then the LD 21 Chairman, helping the “Malcontents” with their silly, out of order, “nothingburger.”

Please, read the whole thing. I observed Chris trying to be a parliamentarian “expert” on why this out of order “motion” ought to have been voted on. Ridiculous and silly and out of order. Do we have no grown-ups in our party?

I think everyone who runs to be an LD chairman or county chairman or state committee chairman ought to first read and study all of the statutes and bylaws relating to the position. In my conversations with Chris, before he ran for MCRC Chairman, it was clear to me he had no familiarity with the state statutes relating to political parties, the state committee bylaws, or the Maricopa County Republican Committee (“MCRC”) bylaws. Then let’s not forget what he said about our nominee, now President Donald J. Trump.

As Secretary of the MCRC, I noticed Chris engaging in an effort to create a sub-committee of the county committee that wasted about an hour of time at a meeting of the county committee when, if he and the others engaged in this effort had bothered to read and study the MCRC bylaws, would have concluded, as the MCRC bylaws clearly state, that the sole power for creating a sub-committee lies with the MCRC Chairman – thus, all such “motions” are out of order and a waste of time. But, that evening, our First Vice Chairman, Frank Thorwald, presided over the meeting and let the waste of time proceed.

So, now what do we have?

In Chris’s words, written for all the world to see with his title as the newly-elected Chairman of the Maricopa County Republican Committee (which, to anyone with a familiarity of the law, seems to be libelous):

    [End of Chris Herring’s words.]

Is Chris Herring deliberately inviting Jim O’Connor to sue him for libel? Both as an individual and as the MCRC Chairman?

Check out the Maricopa County Republican Committee web site. See Chris’s name there?

This from the guy who lives in a precinct with a quota of 17 in his precinct with only four of the slots filled. And in a district (he was the chairman) with only 21% of its quota filled.

    You figure it out.

    Thank you.

P.S. It’s 12:34 am on Jan. 26, 2017. Let’s see how long it takes for the Sonoran Alliance webmaster to post this, if at all. Thank you.

  7. Well mr or ms LD23 PC, you must be the only PC in that district thinking the way you do. You must be a McCain supporter so you think like McCain people. Every PC I know in LD23 love Jim O’Connor. This piece of mudslinging coming from our County Chair as his first act as Chair is deplorable and a pack of lies. He was hand picked and so sorry that Tristan Manos who is a much better person to have held this position of County Chair should have been elected wasn’t in the race early enough to get his name out there to everyone.

I am from LD20 and just received your ‘hit’ piece in the mail. Funny how it’s from GOP Precinct Committeeman LD23. Makes no sense. Yet your hit piece is in the mailing Then the one addressing Republican State Committeeman – ‘we hope we’re addressing you correctly.’ What is that supposed to mean. Who are the ‘great many others’ stated in this letter I want to know. Frank Thorwald has officially dropped out of the race leaving only Lines and O’Connor. Lines number of PCs in his District has dropped tremendously. Majority of PCs in his district are his family members as well as friends. This is how he gets elected 3 times in a row. There was not even a State Committeeman nomination or election. PCs in Lines district never were even approached about wanting to be a State Committeeman. All of a sudden they saw they had 17 State Committeeman elected in their district without even having a meeting or election. How does that happen.
Yet Robert Graham is wanting to disenfranchise 119 State Committeeman from voting in this Saturday’s election due to ‘impropriorities’ What do you call what went on in Lines District – legal?

I hate dirty politics and what should be a normal nice election of a new good Conservative Chair for our Az Republican Party is turning into something worse than a Hillary Clinton campaign fight.

  8. I am not a McCain supporter, I supported Kelli Ward. So did Jonathan Lines.
You need to stop with the lies lady.

Sadly our ex-Chairman O’Connor supporter a guy who zero chance of winning, shows a lack of judgement.

You claim every PC in LD23 love Jim O’Connor. Well there are many many of us who don’t like him, he is VERY dishonest in his dealings, he’s a snake.

Read the other posts here on this blog, so many brave PCs have stepped up to show their concerns with O’Connor.
