Man Sentenced to 36 Years For Killing his Girlfriend and Their Unborn Child

Defendant charged under new rules protecting the rights of the unborn

County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced today that Jorge Gurrola (DOB 4/5/82) has been sentenced to 36 years in prison for the September 2005 murder of Mesa’s Monica Sanchez and her six week old unborn child.

Gurrola was convicted in February 2007 on two counts of second degree murder. State lawmakers had recently changed the criminal codes to define the killing of an unborn child as possible second degree murder. Had the law not been amended, Gurrola would be facing a much lighter sentence.

“I applaud the courage of the state lawmakers who revised the criminal codes,” said County Attorney Andrew Thomas. “They helped insure justice is served in this case and similar cases in the future.”

I am the mother of Monica Sanchez. I just want to thank you for publishing this. I hope that now men will think twice about killing their girlfriends.

Monica was a life long friend, one doesn’t get too many of those. I think he got off easy, but I am glad to see some justice served. R.I.P Monica and your precious baby.
