Libertarians now have closed primaries.

Try not to laugh too hard but news from the AP says that the Arizona Libertarian Party has won a suit to have their primaries closed to Independents. I hope that all those Independents out there do not rush to re-register as Libertarians at once. Not only do most people not even know there is a Libertarian ballot in the primary, often there is only one candidate per race. I wonder why they want to exclude Independents from primaries they probably did not even know about.

  1. Now let’s get the GOP to do the same!

  2. The State GOP has been asked for over three years now to file for the same right to pick its own candidates and has refused. Fannin, Salmon and Pullen have refused to this date to do so in spite of appeals to start the process. Good luck.

That is curious. If you think about it, why wouldn’t the Republicans and Democrats insist on a pure partisan primary ? Independents have made a choice not to endorse a particular party. Therefore they should stay out of the primaries and live with the alternatives in the general. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.
