Jerry Weiers — Friend of Special Interests, Enemy of Glendale Taxpayers

Note to Readers:  This post is a repost and being reposted without any knowledge or approval by Shane.  This post was originally posted a few days ago but removed after Jerry’s campaign complained to their friends on 24th Street.  Seems certain Party leadership doesn’t believe in free speech anymore. They seem to believe it is ok to attack Republicans on this or another blog run by a certain county party chair as long as the posts don’t attack their sacred cows.

Jerry Weiers, a candidate for Glendale’s mayor, tries to hold himself out as a conservative.  But after reviewing his positions and legislative history, he is misleading the voters.  In reality, Jerry is a friend of special interests and an enemy of Glendale’s taxpayers.

Jerry claims to support lower taxes but vehemently opposes Glendale’s initiative to reverse the recently passed sales tax increase.  With this 0.7% tax increase, Glendale has the highest sales tax (10.2% on retail purchases; 11.2% on restaurants and bars) of any large city in the County.  Glendale currently has the third highest sales tax rate of the 107 largest cities in the country and became #1 with this increase.  Wouldn’t someone claiming to oppose tax increases be aghast and oppose this increase?

NOT Special Interest Jerry.  This $23 million sales tax increase will go towards paying Glendale’s $30+ million dollar a year subsidy to a special interest, the Phoenix Coyotes.  So Jerry thinks it’s OK for Glendale’s citizens to pay the highest sale tax in the county to subsidize professional hockey.  True fiscally conservatives oppose the sales tax increase that is being used to subsidize a pro hockey team.

While supporting a tax increase affecting Glendale’s citizenry and small businesses, Jerry does support an exception of the sales tax increase applying to two millionaire new car dealers in Glendale, one of whom doesn’t even want the special tax break.  Jerry thinks it is fine to give tax breaks to two millionaire new car dealers while raising taxes on groceries bought by Glendale taxpayers.   That’s Special Interest Jerry for you!!

But these positions by Jerry should not come as a surprise to anyone who followed his legislative career.  Overall, Jerry’s legislative career is unsurprisingly unaccomplished.  Jerry’s biggest accomplishment in his eight years at the Capital is his constant and persistent shakedowns of lobbyists and others at the Capital for money for the special interests he supports.  His constant shakedown of lobbyists became so blatant and offensive that another Republican state legislator introduced a bill last session to stop Jerry’s shakedowns.

Jerry claims to be a fiscal conservative – also a lie.  Jerry was recently graded as “Needs Improvement” by Americans for Prosperity, a leading fiscally conservative taxpayer’s group.

The proclivity of this current city council to give millions of taxpayer money to special interests has taken Glendaleto the brink of bankruptcy.  Does Glendale really want a new Mayor who will continue those policies that have made Glendalethe worst run city in Arizona?  Does Glendale really need another mayor who cares more about special interests than Glendale’s taxpayers and citizens?   Glendale needs a truly fiscally conservative mayor – and that’s not Jerry Weiers.

Just a question for you. I have been operating under the apparent misperception that the Sonoran Alliance website is owned and run by Shane Wikfors. Could you please clarify who does own and run the Sonoran Alliance website?

    Thank you!

  2. @ Conservative American:

Shane is the proprietor/administrator of SA, but there are MANY authors/contributors, some anonymous, others not (probably only Shane knows exactly how many). As far as I know, Shane is the ONLY one who can add/approve a person to be a SA author. That DOES NOT mean, however, that he ever approves, or even knows about, any particular post (other than his own) until after it appears on the site.

I know this first-hand, since I authored a post in June that called out Speaker Tobin for personally killing the bills to restrict public employee unions. That post was removed within hours, specifically due to the fact that Shane was pressured to remove it by people who should know better.

Since I respect Shane (and the predicament he was put in), I chose not to repost it, though I REALLY wanted to. Instead, I have created a NEW anonymously-run conservative blog, AzCopperDome (linked in my name above), to serve as a place where self-proclaimed conservatives can be held accountable for how they actually govern. None of the powers-that-be (or who think they are) will be able to threaten or influence the posts on that site since they will not know who to pressure. I hope it will eventually become one of the go-to sites to find out what’s REALLY happening under and around AZ’s Copper Dome.

  3. Shane is an employee of the AZ GOP so you can see the conflict of interest with this website.

So there are 6 posts that care more about where Shane works and how this site is run then about the fact Wally’s flat out lying to the voters. Jerry Weiers is the best choice for Mayor of Glendale. He is a fiscal conservative and the type of leader that Glendale needs right now. Wally does not have the resources needed to win this race and instead of doing the honorable thing, he has chosen to resort to lying to be the spoiler. The only problem is that if he does indeed become the spolier that a pro union dem will be elected and we can thank Wally for that brain child of an idea.

The idea that Jerry has,”shaken down” lobbyist for money is so far wrong it is laughable. Jerry has long supported several charities including food banks, veterans groups, and the Shiners Hospital. Wally should be ashamed of himself for attempting to discredit Jerry by these false attacks and should appologize to the charities and Jerry Weiers.

And the problem with that is what?

I don’t live in Glendale. It’s your fight, not mine. I DO read this blog regularly and I DO post here so, of course, I’m interested in issues concerning the blog itself. Those issues just happened to have come up and become public as part of the above article. Have to deal with things like that when and where they come up! 😉

      “All politics is local.”

  5. So someone posted and it was taken down by the admin. Then they reposted it. Hmmm. Fool me once…

  6. Point of clarification: I am NOT an employee of the Arizona Republican Party. Instead, I am an independent contractor/consultant to the Arizona Republican Party. This is verifiable on the FEC reports.

The goal of this blog is to provide conservative perspective and an alternative to the traditional mainstream media where reporters are left-leaning.

I would strongly prefer that blog posts be critical of Democrats and leftists rather than fellow conservatives.

Although this blog offers advertising, it barely makes any revenue.

  7. @ Shane:

I can appreciate (and agree with) your stated goal for SA of providing accountability for “Democrats and leftists.” The problem is that, for true conservatives, the “leftists” portion of that goal practically REQUIRES that we criticize Republicans when they act or govern like leftists. There have been many examples of criticism of Republicans on SA over the years, and not just of those who are widely regarded as “RINOs,” but also of so-called conservatives who failed to govern as such.

I can’t think of very many “leftist” positions that are more obvious (especially in the Walker Era) than supporting public employee union dominance over taxpayers. Yet, we have Speaker Andy Tobin, from a conservative district, elected to leadership by conservatives, who aggressively kills ANY bill that would reduce public employee union power. He even follows that up by aggressively punishing those who dared force him to kill those bills openly, rather than quietly, thereby exposing himself as a defender of the left.

As true conservatives on the inside, we expose ourselves as hypocrites if we do not call out such actions when we see them. The conservative public deserves to know the truth.

    • Conservative American says

It is common knowledge that there is an ongoing battle for the soul of the Republican Party. There are those “Republicans” who seek to cloak themselves with the mantle of conservatism while actively supporting the same agendas as liberal, “progressive” Democrats. That needs to be called out. What better place to do it then at a blog “…with a blatantly conservative worldview.”

“Constantine Querard, the Sleazy, un-ethical Political Consultant, then called AZ GOP Chairman Tom Morrissey & Thayer Vershoor to complain and tell Shane Wikfors, still an employee of the AZ GOP, to take the post down!”.
Morrissey said that SA, ‘could not go after a fellow Republican’? What kind of Bxxxxx is Morrissey preaching now? What a bunch of hypocrites these idiots are!.

VOILA! That same day, the post magically Disappeared!”.

  9. Shane follows orders from the GOP, and it is hilarious….

Jerry is an old fool, I wouldn’t let him watch my dog.

Keep it up Shane…. SA’s blunders are a constant source of humor.

    • Conservative American says

What is a constant source of humor, Lampoon, is the liberal perspective which you consistently present in the comments you post at a conservative blog, LOL! 🙂

      • Is that all that you have?

        Typical

But, I guess you get into too much trouble when you make libelous attacks on posters..eh CA?

        LOL

        • Conservative American says

Alright, Lampoon. If Shane sees fit to permit this blog to be filled with your adolescent snark, instead of legitimate political debate, you can own Sonoran Alliance. I’ll go somewhere else. It’s all yours! Enjoy!
