Opposes Climate Legislation that Results in Higher Tax Burden on Citizens

EAST VALLEY – Former Congressman and candidate for Arizona’s 6th Congressional District Matt Salmon announced today his signing of the Americans for Prosperity’s No Climate tax Pledge. Salmon released the following statement regarding his pledge to oppose climate legislation that results in higher taxes:

“I proudly support the efforts by Americans for Prosperity to protect taxpayers from tax increases due to climate change legislation. As I learned during my previous tenure in Congress, politicians are always looking for excuses to raise revenue through tax hikes and the climate change issue has become another bad argument for doing so. I pledge to oppose any efforts by these tax-and-spend lawmakers to increase the tax burden on citizens and businesses when I go back to Washington.”

About Americans for Prosperity & No Climate Tax Pledge
Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is committed to educating citizens about economic policy and mobilizing those citizens as advocates in the public policy process. AFP is an organization of grassroots leaders who engage citizens in the name of limited government and free markets on the local, state, and federal levels. The grassroots activists of AFP advocate for public policies that champion the principles of entrepreneurship and fiscal and regulatory restraint. Americans for Prosperity has more than 1,750,000 activists in all 50 states, and 31 state chapters and affiliates.

The No Climate Tax Pledge is a project of Americans for Prosperity. The pledge simply states that candidates will “oppose any legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue.” The objective of the pledge is to separate the tax question from the climate change issue. AFP does not believe it is appropriate to hide tax hikes in environmental bills. Instead, AFP believes these bills should be revenue neutral, holding taxpayers harmless by offsetting every dollar of revenue raised through environmental taxes and regulations with tax cuts. Prominent signers of the pledge include U.S. Senators Rubio, Paul, Thune, Inhofe, Coburn, Roberts, Lee, and Johnson, along with 151 U.S. Representatives and eight governors.

About Matt Salmon
Matt Salmon was first elected to the United States Congress in 1994 and served until 2000, honoring his term limit pledge. A proud fiscal conservative, Salmon was rated in the top five among all 535 members of the House and Senate by Citizen’s Against Government Waste for all six years he was in office. He is a lifetime member of the NRA with an A+ rating and also earned a 100% rating by the National Right to Life. He was also the proud recipient of the American Cancer Society’s “Top National Elected Official” award.

Matt Salmon has received endorsements from Arizona Congressman Trent Franks, former Arizona Congressman John Shadegg, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, South Dakota Senator John Thune, East Valley mayors Gail Barney (Queen Creek), Hugh Hallman (Tempe) and John Insalaco (Apache Junction).

It is time to reduce and reverse the death-grip that the federal government has on our economy. I am pleased to join with Americans for Prosperity in their fight to restrain the power of the federal government. I look forward to working with them when I am in Congress to unleash the full potential of the American economy.”

Statement by McCain, Kyl, Flake & Gosar on Arizona Wildfires

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 20, 2011

Joint Statement by Senators John McCain, Jon Kyl and Congressmen Jeff Flake and Paul Gosar

Washington D.C. – U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Jon Kyl (R-AZ), and Congressmen Jeff Flake (AZ-06) and Paul Gosar (AZ-01) today released the following statement regarding the Arizona wildfires:

“Arizona is currently facing the worst wildfire season in its history. After touring the devastation in eastern Arizona, we would like to express our gratitude to the brave firefighters, first responders, and public lands personnel who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to preserve communities, homes, and our natural habitats.

“During our tour of the damaged areas caused by the Wallow Fire on Saturday, we were briefed by senior Forest Service officials, one of whom informed us that some wildfires in Arizona (across our southern border) are regrettably caused by drug smugglers and illegal immigrants. This statement is consistent with what we’ve been hearing for years, as well as testimony by the Forest Service and media reports dating back as far as 2006.

“While Arizonans continue to face the enormous challenges related to these wildfires, it’s unfortunate that some are inserting their political agenda into this tragedy.”

Allen calls on federal government to reform forest management policies

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 7, 2011
CONTACT: Mike Philipsen

(STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX) State Senator Sylvia Allen (R-5) today expressed her sadness and frustration over the devastation being caused by the rapidly-growing Wallow Fire in southern Apache and northern Greenlee Counties. Allen called on the U.S. Forest Service to reform its management policies and adopt restoration practices that will protect the forests and wildlife without harming rural communities, the economy, and the taxpayers.

“The Wallow Fire is further evidence that our current system of managing our forests is simply not working,” Allen said. “To the contrary, the federal government’s policies for protecting spotted owls and goshawks are wreaking devastation, destroying homes, and threatening lives, communities, and our economy throughout northern Arizona, and the owls and goshawks are no better protected.”

“It’s time that we return common sense to forest management. In areas where the forest had been thinned around communities, the fire has dropped and homes have been spared. Unfortunately, this thinning has only been accomplished in a few areas.”

Allen called on the Forest Service to move forward with the Four Forests Restoration Initiative, whereby the Forest Service contracts with private industry to do the mechanical thinning.

“The only way we’re going to restore our forests is to involve private industry, which will absorb the costs while responsibly thinning the forest, so we don’t have any more of these enormous fires,” said Allen. “It saves the taxpayers money, creates jobs, and protects us from these devastating wildfires.”

Allen also pointed to the economic devastation resulting from fires like the currently-burning Wallow and Horseshoe Fires and the Rodeo Chediski Fire of 2002. “Besides the millions of dollars it takes to fight these kinds of massive fires, there is another hidden cost to this beautiful region where I live. The fires kill tourism and recreation, and local businesses suffer for a long time after the fires go out.”

Allen expressed her gratitude to the firefighters and Forest Service officials who are responding to the Wallow Fire. “I want those who are fighting the fire to know that my prayers are with them for their safety, and my gratitude goes out to them for working so hard in fighting this fire.

My frustration is with bureaucrats 2000 miles away with their misguided regulations that lead to these catastrophic fires, and with the extreme environmental groups who have made millions of dollars from American taxpayers by filing lawsuits.”

State Legislators Assist Arizona Ranchers in Wallow Fire

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 6, 2011
CONTACT: Paul Boyer

Northern Arizona Representatives Brenda Barton, Chester Crandall, Senator Sylvia Allen and the House Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Frank Pratt have reached out to the Arizona State Parks and State Land Department to facilitate the potential relocation of livestock in the event of evacuation requirements due to the Wallow Fire.

“We’re trying to do our part to help ranchers with their livestock,” Representative Brenda Barton said. “This move will help them to get a hold of water for their animals while these brave firefighters work to bring an end to the fire.”

State Parks and the State Land Department responded immediately to make the approximately 1,000 acres of Lyman Lake available to Northern Arizona ranchers for this relocation.

“I’m praying for the safety of our firefighters and citizens who are in the path of this catastrophic fire,” Senator Allen said. “Opening Lyman Lake is one thing that the state can do to help with livestock evacuation.”

Representative Barton Questions Failed Federal Forest Management Policy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 6, 2011
CONTACT: Paul Boyer

Representative Brenda BartonRepresentative Brenda Barton is questioning whether or not nonfeasance is the true root cause of the Wallow Fire, now the 3rd most catastrophic fire in Arizona’s history.

“My heart is broken for the loss Arizona is suffering today,” Representative Brenda Barton said. “And I am filled with righteous anger at those responsible for this terrible disaster. This did not have to be.”

In 2010, Barton and Senator Sylvia Allen specifically toured the region of Big Lake to see first hand the forest conditions in the area. What they saw was lands managed by the Apache Tribe and the State of Arizona were properly cleaned and cleared, thus one did not need a fence or a sign to know when they had crossed into federally managed lands because the conditions were so deplorable.

An over crowded forest not only is a significant fire hazard, but it chokes the water-shed, and makes hunting by native predators such as the owl nearly impossible.

“One thing is for sure, who needs a spotted owl management program after this fire,” Barton said.

It has been over a decade since the last timber mills closed in Arizona’s mountains, and in that time under the management of the United States Forest Service (USFS) over 1,700 square miles of the state’s forests have burned. “I thought we’d learned our lessons in 2002 after the devastating Rodeo-Chedeski fire that destroyed over 730 square miles of Arizona’s forests, taking homes and lives with it. But I guess its business as usual for the USFS,” Barton said.

For over a decade, residents and civic leaders in Arizona’s mountain communities have been imploring the USFS to adopt a more pro-active approach to forest management; one that allows for an aggressive program to clean and clear the forest floor. It’s here in what is called the “fire load” that otherwise healthy lightning strike fires become catastrophic and devastate hundreds of thousands of acres in a relatively short period of time. Such intense and large fire events have an effect of searing the ground, which in turn makes it relatively difficult for the forest to regenerate.

Compounding this management problem is the refusal of the USFS to allow previously burned lands, such as those remaining from the 2004 Willow fire near Payson, to be cleared and cleaned. Current practice now simply allows this debris to build up and become dry and fuel for future wildfires.

In contrast, Sweden, arguably one of the most progressive environmental nations in Europe has in the past six years turned away from the US practice of au natural forests and has aggressively begun a forest management program which grooms and utilizes the timber while cleaning the forest floor. This program has created over 7,500 new jobs in Sweden’s northern regions while providing timber for the domestic construction industry. Germany has also begun a program of managed harvesting of their famous Black Forest in Bavaria.

Meanwhile, the jobs and economy of northern Arizona has languished as the USFS has pursued a “hands off” approach to forest management, culminating in recent years with entire areas of Arizona’s forests being gated off and locked to recreational use.

In the past, well managed timber harvesting combined with prudent cattle management has kept Arizona’s forests clean, which minimizes the opportunities for catastrophic wildfires, such as we have experienced since the late 1990’s.

There Are No Cool Heads in Portal

By Ed Ashurst

Irregardless of which side of the political spectrum you reside, Portal, Arizona is a beautiful place. Located in the mouth of Cave Creek on the eastern slope of the Chiracahua Mountains, it is not much more than a hole in a road, which continues west to the town of Paradise, and eventually ascends to the top of the mountain at a campground located at a spot called Rustler Park. The small populace of Portal is partially made up of retirees, wealthy enough to own a piece of the pricey land; not a few who could be described as liberal academics. A short distance up the canyon is The Southwest Research Station of The Museum of Natural History. This area, and the Chiracahua range as a whole, is the best example of neo-tropical bird habitat in the United States. It is the home of: the greater and lesser long-nosed bat, the famous trogon, the so-called “endangered” spotted owl, and hundreds of other rare species. It is bird watcher’s paradise. It is burning down.

About a week ago, what is now being called Horseshoe Fire #2 was started by illegal aliens in the area of Burro Springs near the headwaters of Horseshoe Canyon. Border Patrol agents tracked four aliens to the very start of the fire. The first Forest Service fire fighters to arrive at the site observed the same tracks. Horseshoe Fire #1 was started near the same spot almost exactly a year ago, also ignited by illegal aliens. In the last 3 years alone no less than 11 fires have been started by illegal aliens in the Chiracahua Mountains and the adjacent Peloncillo Mountains. No less than 120 thousand acres have burned. The cost to the American taxpayers to fight these fires is nearing $70 million. The U.S. Forest Service itself admitted that Horseshoe Fire #1 cost in excess of $10 million to fight.

The Three Triangle Ranch has a forest grazing permit in Horseshoe Canyon. In the summer of 2010 the Three Triangle manager was told by the Forest Service that his permit numbers were going to be cut to less than 200 head of cattle in a pasture that previously ran in excess of 400. Horseshoe Fire #2 is still burning out of control, consuming everything in its path, but in the first stages its primary fuel was grass, amply available due to under grazing on the Horseshoe allotment. The wind, blowing southwest to northeast, carried the fire at an astounding speed down Horseshoe Canyon and over a ridge into Sulphar Canyon (another under grazed allotment). From the mouth of Sulphar Canyon it skirted around the foot of the mountains by Sanford Hill going north to the very edge of Portal itself.

Three Triangle Ranch cows saved the town of Portal. The Forest Service will claim that a fire break made by their bulldozers should get the credit, but in reality, as the fire reached the edge of town it burned into a corner of a large cow pasture, one of the few that had been heavily grazed, and it simply ran out of fuel.

In 1994 there was a fire in the area near Rustler Park that became known as the Rattlesnake Fire. Prior to this fire, Forest Service employees had collected seeds from this area, and nurtured thousands of seedlings ready to plant. After the Rattlesnake Fire the Forest Service proposed a sale of burned timber to finance the planting of these seedlings in the area destroyed by the fire. The fight was on. The local environmental community, with the help of The Southwest Center for Biological Diversity and other eco-terrorists groups, sued the Federal Government to stop the timber sale. The court ruled in favor of the environmental community, but the Forest Service appealed and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals eventually overturned the original decision of the lower court, and ruled in favor of the U.S. Forest Service.

Not long before this, the Forest Service had proposed a small 10 acre timber sale near the same area which immediately set off a firestorm of protest from the same group of enviros. Within a matter of a few days they were able to inspire thousands of letters of protest against the proposed timber sale. The word was put out that the Forest Service was clear cutting the entire Chiracahua range, when in reality the sale was not to exceed 10 acres. Hundreds of these protest letters were written on university letterhead paper and signed by many PhDs from all over the United States. In frustration the Forest Service cancelled the timber sale thinking it not worth the fight. The results of this mismanagement and hatred of loggers and cowboys has produced an unnatural forest that is virtually choking on its own excess of downed timber, undergrowth and unharvested grass, that is at best a time bomb waiting to be set off by a bolt of lightening or in this case, the match of a drug smuggler.

The pendulum swings back and forth, with technique and practice going from one extreme to the other, and common sense often being overlooked. Our natural resources should be managed in a case by case manner with decisions being made by people with proven experience, (including permit holders), instead of being held hostage to the latest fad propagated by some PhD with no practical and hands on experience. The current method of managing fires is to let them burn from road to road or natural barrier to natural barrier. Fires, that twenty years ago would have been aggressively fought even in remote areas with destruction kept to a minimum, are now being allowed to burn over a greater expanse. The result is a forest habitat that is being nuked, with everything in its path being destroyed. Old growth timber on the Coronado National Forest is virtually gone as the result of fires. The enviros want to blame the loggers for this, but it is simply not true.

As I write this on Sunday morning May 15, 2011 I sit on the porch and look north about 10 miles and observe Horseshoe Fire #2 still burning out of control. The first stage of the fire burned eastward from Burro Spring, carried by a strong wind, but now after several days of relative calm the fire has burned westward climbing to very highest peak in the Chircahua range. I watch the fire from where I sit and can see that it is now around the corner of the mountaintop burning on the west face of the mountain. It has also burned around to the east side of the very top

of the mountain. This east side where one fork of the fire is actually located is the very headwaters of Cave Creek itself. It’s what a cowboy would call downhill and shady from where it is at the moment to the Southwest Research Station and a short distance on down the creek to Portal. Cave Creek comes into Portal from a different angle than the first stage of the fire which I mentioned in a previous paragraph. The town of Portal is not out of danger yet. I’ve been in this area from top to bottom gathering cattle and can tell you first hand that it is chocked with down timber, brush and grass, the result of decades of so called protection by our federal government. The people in Portal and the surrounding area need to hope that the wind doesn’t start blowing again west to east like it has all spring or the second stage of this fire could be worse than the first. As of the morning of, Saturday the 14th of May, the fire had burned in excess of 20,000 acres of some of the southwest’s best wildlife habitat, not to mention millions of dollars of potential timber sales and grazable forage and on Sunday morning the 15th there is no end in sight.

Nobody around here is happy with the fire, not ever the Mexican outlaws who habitually pack their dope and other contraband over a trail that goes by Burro Springs and on north to multiple drop off spots, scattered from Portal all the way to San Simon or Bowie. Many residents in the area have quality radios and can listen to outlaw scouts who drive up and down Highway 80 between Portal and Douglas and relay information via radio to their narcotic packing counterparts. They transmit messages that contain the whereabouts of Border Patrol agents or anyone else who might interfere with the smuggling of their product. This last week these outlaw scouts were heard cursing the fire that they started, which now transcends the entire eastern slope of the Chiracahua range. They are being forced to send their contraband west to the Silver Creek area (the home of Roger Barnett) and on north across the western slope of the mountains.

While all this goes on I’m sure our politicians will make hay laying the blame on each other and their respective political parties. The result of all this will be more bureaucratic quagmire completely void of common sense or solution, and the fire continues to burn the trogon and spotted owl out of house and home. The fire still looms uphill from Portal whose residents are still in danger of losing everything, and dozens of federal employees sit down at their base camp 6 miles east of Portal on Highway 80 staring up to the top of the mountain hoping the wind will stay calm. All weather forecasts call for the wind to return on Monday the 16th.

While all this goes on, Janet Napolitano and our Campaigner in Chief assure us that our southern border is safer than ever. Try telling this to a trogon or spotted owl or perhaps a homo sapien living in Portal. They’re not playing it cool any longer and they won’t believe you.

Ed Ashurst is a rancher who lives near Apache, Arizona located at the foot of the Chricahua Mountains in southeastern Arizona. He is the great grand nephew of Arizona’s first US Senator Henry F. Ashurst. He was also the neighbor and good friend of the late Rob Krentz, who was murdered on his ranch in March of 2010.

Bureaucracy threatens state parks

by Byron Schlomach, Ph.D.
Goldwater Institute

As the state has faced mountains of red ink over the last few years, one of the budget casualties has been the State Parks department. Some parks have been temporarily closed to save money and permanently closing others has been debated. As the economy begins to recover, all parks that were temporarily closed have reopened, but that doesn’t mean the department is out of the woods. The real obstacle to keeping our state parks open isn’t money. It’s bureaucracy.

Last December, the Arizona State Parks Foundation published a “privatization and efficiency plan.” Prepared by PROS Consulting, the proposal appears to have been written by former government parks administrators—not exactly the kind of out-of-the-box thinking needed during times of budget crises. It recommends most state parks be managed by a quasi-government entity, sort of like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the federally created banks that helped create the real estate bubble. The report is clearly influenced by the department’s objection to allowing private companies to manage Arizona’s parks.

Some hear “private companies” and think our parks would be sold off. But the Parks Foundation is ignoring what really has been suggested: a public-private partnership that allows private companies to manage publicly owned resources under strict performance contracts. One Arizona-based company, Recreation Resource Management, runs complete parks for the U.S. Forest Service right here in Arizona. This fact alone should be enough to dispel concerns raised in the report that many state parks are on land leased from the federal government and therefore can’t be run by anyone but the state.

A quasi-government entity could keep the current state park organization largely intact, missing the opportunity to gain the efficiencies and improvements in quality that could come from allowing private companies to help. A private company, required under contract to maintain a park’s character, would be committed to running a park well to attract more people to enjoy its natural or cultural treasures. In the end, isn’t that what we want in a parks system?

Newt Gingrich is a conservative? Are you SURE?

Then why is he schilling for Al Gore?!?

As everyone by now surely knows, this November’s elections will be the most important in recent memory and will very likely see a Republican wave, similar to or possibly in excess of that which brought Gingrich to the Speakership back in 1994.

That election came to be called a Revolution, although the long-term effects were mixed, to say the least. To many, the election of ’94 was an opportunity to roll back the tide of big government that was eventually squandered.

This year, we hope to take advantage of another opportunity to stem the tide of runaway government control of our lives. We hope to recover our lost liberties and repair our broken economy by rejecting the collectivist call to central planning and returning to the traditional American system of unleashing human ingenuity through freedom, competition, and unfettered innovation.

In order to do that, though, I believe we must keep firmly in mind the principles that guide us to the polls.

For far too long, candidates have gotten into office on big talk, with little delivery. Democrats fight to expand government everywhere and always, and far too many Republicans end up embracing socialism light in the name of “bipartisanship.”

Many see this last failing as the reason the Revolution of ’94 ultimately failed. In many ways, the surging Tea Party movement is a rejection of this kind of compromise on principle.

So if you are approached by Newt claiming he’s helping Republicans, you might want to remember that Newt also wants us to help Nancy Pelosi fight global warming.

Or Climate Change.

Or whatever it’s called this week.

Two years ago, Mr. Gingrich got comfy with Nancy on a couch in front of the Capitol Building to do a commercial for We Can Solve It, a video project for celebrities and politicians, who recorded messages about the urgency of stopping global warming.

Their website is http://www.wecansolveit.org/ . While that’s disturbing enough, a little digging reveals We Can Solve It is actually a project of The Alliance for Climate Protection. You can confirm the link between the two here. The We Can Solve It campaign is the third project on the list of the Alliance’s “Our Work” page.

The Alliance for Climate Protection was founded in 2006 with the mission to “close the gap between the 77% of people who believe that there is solid evidence that the Earth is warming and the 47% who believe that warming is linked to human activity.”

The founder and chairman of the Alliance for Climate Protection is Al Gore.

Now, I’m sure that Mr. Gingrich will not be discussing any of this at the NCGOP’s fundraiser on the 27th. I’m sure he’ll be rallying the conservative faithful to get out there, work a polling location, walk their precincts, make phone calls, and do all the other necessary work to win on November 2nd. That is all well and good, and I’m all for that.

Nevertheless, I have to take with a grain of salt the words of anyone who thinks it’s important to help Nancy Pelosi and Al Gore save the planet from… well, us.  Newt, you got caught!  Let the political backpeddling begin!

GET RID OF THE RINOS FOLKS.   Given the above, that means Newt’s gotta go too.

To all the congressional newbies (Quayle, Schweikert, etc) stay away from the globallists and RINOs. If you succumb, eventually we’re gonna catch ya.  And by then, McCain wont be around to protect you like he did Jon (2005 Cornryn/Kyl) “Amnesty” Kyl and John “TARP Bailout” Shadegg.

“No Pressure” How Radical Environmentalists See Non-Compliant Humans

This ought to scare the hell out of anyone! Here is how some radical environmentalists perceive those of us who refuse to go along with the global warming myth by complying with their agenda.

WARNING! THIS IS VERY GRAPHIC!

YouTube Preview Image

This was put out by the people behind the “10:10″ campaign. Here’s what The Blaze reports:

The latest anti-global warming campaign aimed at getting people around the world to reduce their carbon footprint has backfired. Big time.

The people behind the “10:10″ campaign, a movement encouraging people to reduce their carbon consumption by 10 percent in 2010, have been forced to pull their controversial new advertisement from the internet after widespread public outcry. The gruesome 4-minute ad depicts global warming skeptics being literally blown to pieces after their tree-hugging friends insist they’re under “no pressure” to modify their carbon consumption.

Warning (via Sad Hill): “Do NOT watch this video if you wish to avoid portrayals of extreme violence, genocide, child murders, demonic practice and terrorism — all in the name of environmentalism.”

Unfortunately for the “10:10″ folks, the public disgust surrounding the video outweighed its message and its producers pulled it from the web. Equally unfortunate for them, however, is the rampant re-posting of the video by bloggers around the world.

While the video’s message may have backfired, many point out that it gives a scary glimpse into the mind of today’s global warming alarmists. With its “No Pressure” campaign, writes the UK’s Telegraph, “the environmental movement has revealed the snarling, wicked, homicidal misanthropy beneath its cloak of gentle, bunny-hugging righteousness.”

My Turn: Carbon Tax is No Bargain At All

Jeff Smith

By Jeff Smith

On these very Opinion pages of the Arizona Republic last Saturday there appeared a bizarre and somewhat tortured defense of H.R. 2380, the Raise Wages, Cut Carbon Act of 2009 that was sponsored in the House of Representatives last year by Rep. Jeff Flake. This defense came from, of all people, Mr. Tom Jenney of Americans for Prosperity.

The piece appeared to concede as given that carbon reduction legislation is in the offing for this country. It therefore suggested that Mr. Flake’s carbon tax proposal should be adopted as the lesser of two evils between it and full-blown Cap and Trade – a “grand bargain.” I respectfully disagree with Mr. Jenney, as I do with Mr. Flake for having introduced such a dangerous piece of legislation in the first place. As the so-called “scientific” case for global warming crumbles like a house of cards, and as Americans show themselves to be less-concerned and less-convinced of global warming every day, the idea that we must accept any kind of carbon reduction legislation is anything but a given as far as I’m concerned.

To begin with, as best I can tell, perhaps the most redeeming virtue of this legislation Mr. Jenney could find is that it is “honest,” in that “it calls a tax a tax.” Apparently standards for good legislation have dropped even further than I had feared if this is the best we can say about this otherwise deeply-flawed proposal.

Mr. Jenney writes, “The Flake-Lipinski bill recognizes the damage caused by new taxes, and seeks to limit that damage.” If we acknowledge that new taxes will be damaging, I suggest we prevent their introduction in the first place, rather than seek to mitigate the damage through an unrelated offsetting tax reduction that may or may not persist (but probably won’t) for the duration of the carbon tax.

Mr. Jenney goes on to suggest improvements to the bill, recommending a cut in “key taxes, such as corporate income, personal income, capital gains, dividend, and estate taxes” instead of the payroll-tax reductions offered in the bill as it currently stands. However, this merely puts “lipstick on a pig,” and still ignores the true danger of this bill, which is that it gives credibility to the idea that carbon dioxide (CO2) is a pollutant that must be reduced, regulated, and taxed. Giving credence to this idea, from an alleged conservative, no less, opens the door wide open for Big Brother to start dictating to us in every aspect of our lives that involves energy consumption or carbon emission. How many things do you do in a day that involve energy consumption or carbon emission (don’t forget breathing!)? How long will it be before the federal government starts dictating, for example, how long we can keep our lights on, how long we can use our air conditioners or how cool we can keep our homes and offices in the summer, how and when we may drive our cars, what kind of light bulbs we can and can’t use (wait, they’ve already done that)? And the list goes on and on.

Sound far-fetched? Be reminded our President is on record as saying the following as a candidate only two years ago: “If somebody wants to build a coal power plant they can, it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.”

If our President is so cavalier in his willingness to let the entire coal-fired utility industry go under, and allow electricity rates for American families to necessarily skyrocket, what reason do we have to believe our federal government wouldn’t take similarly draconian steps to tax and limit CO2, especially once the idea that CO2 is a pollutant has been “ratified” by this bill?

Many of us saw the Audi “Green Police” ad that aired during the Super Bowl. It depicted an army of power-crazed environmental do-gooders arresting people for a host of alleged environmental infractions. While it was intended to be humorous, the ad backfired as horrified Americans witnessed a chilling scene that could be all too real if Cap and Trade or the Carbon Tax bill were to pass.

Our federal government has shown a continuous propensity to insert itself into virtually every aspect of the everyday lives of Americans, usually in the name of a cause so grandiose and compelling that many well-meaning people willingly comply (Save the Planet!) Do we really need to encourage them by conceding – erroneously – that the most basic and fundamental activities of our everyday lifestyle must be regulated and taxed? Do we really need to surrender our civilization – our very way of life – precisely as it is becoming clear to the world that there is anything but a scientific consensus concerning global warming, and that the panels and committees that have foisted this falsehood upon us are really agenda-driven political bodies, with no real concern for scientific integrity or, for that matter, the actual health of the planet? Of course not!

Jeff Flake’s Carbon Tax bill is no bargain at all for America.

Jeff Smith is a candidate for the United States House of Representatives in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District, running against Jeff Flake. For more information, go to www.votejeffsmith2010.com.

The Chilling Effect of the Soviet Lysenko on “Climate Change”

Big Government had a recent column on ClimateGate, offering that it wasn’t the only Progressive Science scam pushed on the public, and states that “Eugenics” is one major global Progressive-produced catastrophe, but there is another example of Progressive Left political maneuvering that crippled a nation and brought the weight of an oppressive centrally-controlled bureaucracy on the heads of honest and diligence scientists, now known as “Lysenkoism.”

The roots of ClimateGate, with falsifying date, suppressing data that didn’t’ support the theory, and intimidating scientists as “skeptics” or even the more blatant, “unbelievers,” is found in the Soviet Union’s past, their embrace of a junk science called “agro-biology” or as Elof Axel Carlson described it, “a toxic blend of politics and pseudo-science.”

Actor and non-scientist Ed Begley, Jr. had a micro-climate-change of overheating when arguing that the only climate authority was “peer-reviewed” scientific journals. He was quite adamant, repeating “peer-reviewed” as often that it seemed to be a talisman, but about two hours too late to have heard the “thud” of the next shoe to drop from what appears to be a ClimateGate centipede, that the supposedly independent and non-partisan peer-reviewed” journals were under heavy pressure and manipulation of editors and selection of papers to refuse to publish anything that countered in any way the ClimateChange narrative, a total usurpation of the scientific process of open review – the system of checks and balances.

“Peer-reviewed,” the world has just discovered, has been nothing of the sort when it comes to the pseudo-science of “global warming”.  Actor Begley’s position of “peer-reviewed” turned out to not have been spoken from standing on solid rock, but from a tree, a precarious perch on a dead limb that was being sawed off as he spoke. http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/bighollywood/2009/11/24/ed-begley-jr-loses-it-on-fox-news/

But there is nothing new under the sun, and those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it. This combination of politics, science and public policy machinations can be found in the career and wreckage left by one man, Trofim D. Lysenko of the Soviet Union.

T.D. Lysenko (1898-1976) was a half-educated man of science; he didn’t finish his studies and remained defensive through his life towards those with better credentials and experience than he. One might say he learned just enough to be dangerous, developing a new theory, “agro-biology” which mixed known processes of agronomy and plant genetics, with theoretical and unproven evolutionary concepts. His theory appealed to the Soviet “New Man” thinking, upending the old orders, a “political” view applied to agriculture.

The Soviets had a problem; most of Soviet agricultural land was more north than America – of the latitudes of Canada, not the reliable American breadbaskets of warmer Iowa or Illinois. They have a short growing season, with no room for error, therefore much of Soviet agricultural plant research was focused on developing hardier and more productive strains of wheat. Lysenko caught the attention of the Soviet central planners when he proposed a radical method that he claimed would shock wheat into developing new characteristics that appealingly would produce a sort of “revolutionary” wheat fit for the “revolutionary” Soviet Union. And, like Lysenko’s education, “agro-biology” had just enough grounding in proven science to be convincing, especially to people who didn’t know anything about agriculture, agronomy or plant genetics. Soviet scientists who worked in those fields took a look, did some of their own peer testing and began demurring.

Lysenko used his rising political power to enhance his data to promote his theory, reduce criticism, remove scientists from their positions, chase them from the field and in several cases, most notably Lysenko’s chief critic and professional competitor, Nikolai Vavilov, the man arrested, stripped of his position and literally sent to a Soviet prison where he died, a broken, innocent man. The rest of Soviet science took note, and shut up. They had to eat, after all. But there wasn’t much to eat after Soviet Central Planning decreed that the debate was over, “the science settled” and the “consensus” was that Lysenko’s methods were to be applied to all Soviet agriculture. Harvests dropped, the Lysenko-processed wheat didn’t produce the results Lysenko had predicted, had published and had promoted – a national, policy-contrived disaster.

The parallels between the Soviet centralized commitee promotion of Lysenko because his rhetoric fit the Soviet Progressive ideology, and “Climate Change” are ominous – the bullying, the falsification of data and the outright professional, political and bureaucratic smothering of dissenting opinions should be an important lesson to recall when presented with ClimateChange data, claims and computer modeling that fly in the face of observable reality. That the environmental movement has such luminaries as former Soviet President Gorbachev who after losing the free election for Russian president with an abysmal 3% of the vote, morphed into a “green” advocate, after stating that the “environmental movement was the last best hope of communism.”  A strategy of going “Green” that would lead to “Red,” should be a reason to closely examine the claims, the direction and the veracity of anything presented by people who have no backgrounds in science whatsoever. The mountain of emails discussing elimination of dissent, hijacking the peer-review process, collusion and obfuscation, and the exposure of the faulty computer codes written for climate modeling shouldn’t have been a surprise, but it’s welcome and concrete proof that “Global Warming” and “ClimateChange” are politics and power, not science or actual weather. This fraud as it still unravels with almost daily exposure of yet more admissions of hiding data, manipulation to produce desired outcomes, is becoming more and more suspicious as a way to create a basis on which massive taxation and redistribution of wealth was going to be justified, negatively affecting billions of people around the world, arguably the biggest single planned theft in human history.

In other words, the primary task of the politics of science was to ensure that science served the political end of the people and its government.”     The Lysenko Effect, by Nils Roll-Hansen

Al Gore goes Girly-Man to save his frauduant climate scheme

This was too much fun to pass up!  Thank you Kyle-Anne Shiver!! Who wrote this delightful piece…

http://bigjournalism.com/kashiver/2010/02/28/former-veep-goes-girly-man-has-hissy-fit-in-pages-of-new-york-times/

This piece of pure, dribbling, drooling emoting is going to either make you collapse in a torrent of tears or retch into the nearest barf bag.  The only human beings on the planet to whom this editorial would appeal are a bunch of 13-year-old girls without a single clue between them.

With hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, Al is going all out to save his massive investment in the Global Warming hysteria.  Here, he comes up with histrionics befitting the amount of personal loss he stands to suffer.

Ok, so this isn’t totally about Arizona … or is it?

How about the AzCC’s Residential Energy Standards?  Or the AzCC’s stepping out from their legal role as rate-payer watchdog and into making energy policy for Arizona that is; A) out of its pay-grade by the Arizona Constitution, and B) totally based on a outright fraud.

The RES and subsequent foray into “Green Energy” at all costs, without a thought to the real cost per Kwh for fantasy sources of reliable energy is a dangerous road for Arizona’s economic future.

Cost per on demand 24/7 available Kwh of “green electric generation” cannot compare with *clean coal* and *clean nuclear* power period.  Windmills and acres of solar panels dotting the landscape with miles of transmission towers and lines crisscrossing the environment altering the patterns of migratory birds and thunderstorms might be a Quixotic vision of an environmentalists utopia, but unfortunately reality bites.  The sun doesn’t shine 24 hours a day, so you need environmentally unfriendly Lithium batteries to store the energy for later use.  The wind doesn’t blow 24 hours a day in exactly the right velocity and direction to provide on demand electricity for job producing industrial small businesses in a cost effective way.

Time to debunk the Green Dream.   We’ve even heard that schools in Arizona are spending unrestricted amounts of money to “green” up their classrooms.  Shouldn’t that be money better spent with the teachers and kids on real learning?

Anyway, until someone politically stands up and says “Look Mommy!  The Emperor is wearing NO clothes!!”  we will continue down the path to an “Olive Drab Green” future rather than the pretty green that Al Gore would have us believe in.

Snakes In Guam! Snakes in Guam!

Brown Tree SnakesWhat’s all this fuss about “snakes in Guam” that I’m hearing about on the radio?

The last few weeks, Senator John McCain has had some raspy-throated woman shilling for him in a political ad claiming that JD Hayworth voted for some snakes in Guam.

I decided to look into these “snakes” in Guam and instead of diving into the wealth of knowledge provided by the US Department of Agriculture and other scientific papers, I went to one of my favorite websites – YouTube! Here are a few clips about these “Brown Tree Snakes” that have invaded the island of Guam and devastated entire bird populations in addition to terrifying the citizens of Guam.

After viewing these videos, take a moment to read how these snakes are affecting the island of Guam and how they have even become a potential problem to Hawaii.

The Impact of Brown Tree Snakes on Guam’s Island Ecosystem

The spread of brown tree snakes throughout Guam is directly linked to changes in several animal populations. Eight species of forest birds, some found only on Guam, have disappeared from the island. Three other bird species are listed as threatened or endangered and remain in small numbers in the wild. Brown tree snakes eat young Mariana fruit bats (Pteropus mariannus mariannus), which are also listed as endangered on Guam. Small mammals are rare in forests and scrub habitat to begin with. Two gecko species once common on Guam are now considered rare, though they flourish on snake-free Cocos Island nearby. Indirectly, brown tree snakes may disrupt other aspects of Guam’s island ecosystem. Some native trees and plants that depend on birds and fruit bats for seed dispersal and pollination may not reproduce. Insects and spiders, normally controlled by forest birds, have become more abundant.

Economic Effects

Substantial economic losses are associated with brown tree snakes. Guam Power Authority reports millions of dollars in increased costs and lost revenue caused by brown-tree-snake power outages. Snakes climb on electrical transmission lines and short-circuit wires. After snake-induced power outages, electrical distribution equipment frequently needs replacement or repair. Thus, maintenance crew costs rise with overtime and night shifts, compensation must be paid to consumers for damages to electrical equipment, and the need for backup equipment increases. Island residents incur additional costs when food spoils during power outages and shops have to close.

The agricultural community also reports losses due to the brown tree snake. These snakes eat valuable pet birds, young chickens, and chicken eggs. Snakes will often kill prey too large to be eaten, including puppies, rabbits, and young goats. Medical expenses for treatment of bites by brown tree snakes are an additional cost. No human fatalities are known.

Finally, here’s the legislation related to the controlling “Snakes in Guam”  H.R. 1588 otherwise known as the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004

And the Roll Call Vote on the bill? Both Senator McCain and Kyl voted for the bill (H.R. 1588) as did 93 other US Senators.
