Michael Monti Top Vote Getter in Tempe, Shocks Establishment!

Michael Monti Defies The Odds, Emerges As Top Vote Getter In Tempe Primary
Business owner takes on self-described “politician” in general election

(Tempe, Arizona) Despite being outspent by a professional politician who has been on the Tempe City Council for nearly a dozen years, business owner and candidate for Tempe Mayor Michael Monti has surprised many, receiving the most votes in the Tempe Mayoral Primary and moving on to the general election.

Michael Monti’s first entry into politics garnered 8112 votes. He will face Mark Mitchell, a self described professional politician, in the May 15th general election.

Mitchell has been under fire for spending more than $14,000 in taxpayer funded travel over three years; for falling to release earlier travel records; and for his refusal to disclose any gifts of meals, travel or tickets he may have received after nearly 12 years as a City Councilman. Monti has teamed up with Mayor Hugh Hallman and County Attorney Bill Montgomery to propose Tempe adopt the strictest gift ban and reporting rules in the state so that people like Mark Mitchell can no longer abuse the taxpayers.

Monti, owner of Tempe’s iconic Monti’s La Casa Vieja said, “University City, Friendly City, Innovating City, Lake City, and now Surprise City. I am honored so many Tempe residents gave me their vote. Our campaign has been based on a policy platform designed to improve the quality of life in Tempe through responsible spending. It’s a platform based on what years of operating a business have taught me. I want to use that knowledge to benefit my hometown.”

Monti is not the only candidate to run a policy based campaign. Former Councilmember Linda Spears also ran on the issues. Monti said, “It speaks volumes that two of the three people running for Mayor of Tempe decided to make this campaign about policy and issues, not about a title. Mitchell is the son of a former Tempe Mayor, Harry Mitchell. Ms. Spears and I may not be in agreement on every issue, but we both understand that good government demands innovation not vague statements. She ran a thoughtful, intelligent campaign and I sincerely hope that she will continue to contribute to the community.”

Having gathered enough votes to enter the general election, the Monti for Mayor Campaign enters its second phase. Look for more platforms and more endorsements in the coming weeks.

“It’s going to be an extraordinary two months. Anyone interested in donating and volunteering for an exciting cause can email us at info@monti4mayor.com , or log on to www.monti4mayor.com,” Monti said.

Michael Monti, owner of Tempe’s historic Monti’s La Casa Vieja, co-founded Local First, Arizona. He is also active in the Tempe Diablos Charities, and is the youngest inductee in the Arizona Restaurant Association’s Hall of Fame.

His campaign is based on bringing private sector ideas to government, fiscal responsibility, civic involvement, economic opportunity, and innovation. His proposals include:

  • Financial incentives for city workers who save tax dollars
  • The creation of the Tempe Community Corps to increase volunteerism, and aid Tempe neighborhoods
  • Partnerships with ASU and the business community to bring more jobs to Tempe
  • The creation of a public swimming beach at Tempe Town Lake, paid for by the private sector
  • Partnerships with the ASU College of Nursing to aid Tempe seniors
  • Encouraging businesses to embrace eco-friendly projects such as the Blink Car Charging Stations at Monti’s La Casa Vieja
  • A ban on texting while driving in Tempe
  • A ban on gifts for elected officials and enhanced reporting requirements

Matt Salmon: Taking a Stand against Dishonest Campaign Tactics

Friends,

It has come to our attention that Matt Salmon’s opponent for Congress has resorted to dishonest and misleading tactics in an attempt to besmirch Salmon’s longstanding conservative credentials.

Former Congressman Matt Salmon has a proven track record of cutting wasteful spending, balancing budgets and demanding fiscal responsibility. He has been honored by the Citizen’s Against Government Waste as a “Watchdog of the Treasury” and “Taxpayer Hero” for his performance in fighting to reduce the size and cost of government.

Congressman Salmon’s pro-business record also earned him the Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce each of his six years in Congress and six consecutive honors as a “Friend of Small Business” from the National Federation of Independent Business. His record of advocating for pro-business policies and fighting to reduce regulations is why he was hired by COMPTEL Inc., a leading telecommunications trade association.

Former Congressman Salmon was hired by the association in 2008. Yesterday, his opponent made an accusation that was called “blatantly false” by the Arizona Capitol Times that attempted to tie Salmon to a contribution made to Hillary Clinton by COMPTEL PAC and its board of directors in 2007 – before Salmon even worked for the organization! Regardless of the fact that contribution decisions are made by the board of directors, Salmon’s opponent has become so desperate to remain relevant that he has chosen to distort the truth to save his failing effort – only backing down when his false accusations are exposed.

This past week the Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, Tom Morrissey, wrote to Adams and Salmon warning, “misrepresentations of records, and character attacks, which are not supported by the record, do a disservice to our entire party and the integrity of both you fine gentlemen.”

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident when it comes to Salmon’s opponent using dishonest tactics to try to mislead the voters about his conservative record. Last week, Salmon’s opponent took to using a “push poll” to spread misinformation and deceitful allegations. This tactic was recently made illegal in the state of New Hampshire and is banned under the code of ethics of the American Association of Political Consultants.

We must speak out against these desperate attempts to deceive voters, and set the record straight. No one should be misled by the desperate attempts of a dishonest and failing campaign.

Salmon’s record is beyond reproach:

  • As a member of Congress, helped to balance the federal budget for the first time in over a generation
  • Rated in the top five among all 535 members of the House and Senate by the Citizen’s Against Government Waste – 6 consecutive years
  • Earned Watchdog of the Treasury from the Citizen’s Against Government Waste – 6 consecutive years
  • Received the Taxpayer Hero Award from the Citizen’s Against Government Waste
  • Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce – 6 consecutive years
  • Honored as a Friend of Small Business by the National Federation of Independent Business – 6 consecutive years
  • Rated A+ by the NRA, Lifetime member of the NRA
  • Rated 100% by National Right to Life
  • Endorsed by Club for Growth, America’s preeminent organization to promote prosperity and opportunity through economic freedom
  • Endorsed by conservative icons like Senators Tom Coburn (Oklahoma), Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania) and John Thune (South Dakota).

These are the reasons why we are supporting Matt Salmon over his opponent. We are confident the voters of Congressional District 5 will see through these deceiving and dishonest tactics and strongly encourage Congressman Salmon’s opponent to run a campaign based on the facts and the issues.

Sincerely,

Gary Pierce, Chairman of the Arizona Corporation Commission
Mark Killian, Former Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives
Chuck Gray, Former Arizona State Senator

Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane Picks Up Key Endorsement From Congressman David Schweikert

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 5, 2012
CONTACT: Mike Manson

The Congressman and the Mayor have both taken on monumental challenges

(Scottsdale, Arizona) Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane has led the effort to balance Scottsdale’s budget and fuel its economic recovery. Congressman David Schweikert has been at the leading edge of the battle to balance the federal budget and economic reform in Washington DC. That’s why it should come as no surprise that Congressman Schweikert is endorsing the re-election of Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane.

Lane, whose campaign boldly declares Scottsdale as “The Best City in America” has worked to keep the city on a steady course through the worst of economic times. At the same time he has preserved Scottsdale’s open spaces and preserved the City’s reputation as a destination for tourism.

Schweikert, whose district includes Scottsdale, says Lane has Scottsdale heading in the right direction. “Mayor Lane’s leadership has Scottsdale’s economy stronger and more vibrant. We both understand the importance of responsible spending and balanced budgets are the foundations of a thriving economy. His leadership has been critical during the sluggish economic recovery.”

Lane said, “I am honored to have the endorsement of Congressman Schweikert. We have both been fighting the good fight to reform government and restore our economy. As Scottsdale continues to rebound I can only hope people like Congressman Schweikert are successful in rebuilding the nation’s economy as well. ”

Mayor Lane ran in 2008 on a platform of reform and working to improve the way the city does business. He has kept his promises. Under his leadership, Scottsdale’s economy has expanded and attracted new investment, while the city continues to be a leader in the arts and setting aside lands for preservation.

Yet Another Key Endorsement: Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane Endorses Michael Monti For Mayor Of Tempe
Lane says Monti understands that cities must work together with neighboring communities

(Tempe, Arizona) Businessman and Candidate for Tempe Mayor Michael Monti has picked up yet another important endorsement. Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane has joined the growing chorus of current and former elected officials who are supporting Michael Monti’s mayoral campaign.

Lane, like Monti, also has a private sector background and a common sense approach to solving problems.

Lane stated, “Michael Monti’s policies and proposals for Tempe reflect a thoughtful, business-sector approach to government. I am an accountant and small businessman by trade and I appreciate the fact that a business owner has decided to run for Mayor of Tempe. Hugh Hallman is one of the best Mayors in Arizona. Michael Monti, endorsed by Mayor Hallman, would be a worthy successor. People who have to meet budgets and payrolls have a unique understanding of what it takes to make a community success as well as stand up for itself. Michael understands that in order for a City to succeed it must work together with neighboring communities. We share many interests with Tempe. I hope to work on them with Michael.”

Monti, who helped pioneer Local First, understands the importance of regional cooperation. “I co-founded Local First because I saw a need for local businesses to come together for critical issues. I plan to bring that same philosophy to Tempe City Hall and partner with neighboring communities to serve common interests. Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane would make an excellent partner. He understands budgets and economic issues because of his private sector background. He understands that politics is not a profession. I am honored to have his endorsement.”

Frank Antenori Receives Endorsement of Arizona 2012 Project

Frank Antenori

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MARCH 1, 2012

ANTENORI ENDORSED BY THE ARIZONA 2012 PROJECT

Tucson – Recognizing the “enthusiasm” of its Tea Party members for State Senator Frank Antenori in his race for Congress in CD-08, the Arizona 2012 Project, a prominent political action committee and tea party organization, today formally endorsed Antenori’s candidacy for Congress in the GOP Primary to be held on April 17th.

“Senator Antenori has played a key role in reducing state spending, shrinking state government, and enforcing laws to deter illegal immigration,” Ron Ludders, the Chair of the Arizona 2012 Project noted.

“Senator Antenori is, by all criteria, a supporter of the Tea Party movement and of a return to Constitutional governance. Above all, Frank Antenori is known for his fierce advocacy in the service of freedom,” Ludders continued.

In it’s endorsement, the organization issued the following statement: “Through its Political Action Committee, Saving Arizona’s Future, the Arizona 2012 Project Board of Directors – having taken note of the membership’s enthusiasm for the candidate- has voted to endorse the candidacy of Arizona Senator Frank Antenori for the U.S. Hourse of Representatives in Congressional District 8.”

Senator Antenori said that he was “humbled and honored to receive the support of so many people who love this country, love our freedom, and want to return to those principles that made America strong.”

Senator Antenori was re-elected to the Arizona State Senate with 61% of the vote in a district with only 43% enrolled Republicans, demonstrating a proven ability to attract support from independent voters.

Antenori is a decorated Green Beret, author, and project manager for a major company involved in developing technology for America’s defense. In his third year in the State Senate he was elected to a Leadership position and has worked to eliminate Arizona’s deficit spending and balance the state budget.

“Southern Arizona and America need results for a change,” Antenori said. “There are too many who run for public office and end up doing nothing or being effective. The challenges we have in this country right now demand people who can get things done. That’s why I’m running and why I appreciate the support from tea party supporters across Southern Arizona. There’s a job to be done and I’m asking for the opportunity to do it.”

Arizona Right to Life Endorses Rick Santorum for President

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 21, 2012
CONTACT: Michelle Clements

Arizona Right to Life Endorses Rick Santorum for President
We Pick Rick

Phoenix, AZ – Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee (AZRTL PAC) today announced its endorsement of Rick Santorum in the Republican presidential primary. AZRTL PAC endorsed Rick Santorum based on his strong pro-life record and his leadership over the years.

Santorum authored the law banning partial-birth abortions, as well as the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, providing appropriate care for infants who survive an abortion. He was a member of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption, and also sponsored legislation related to end of life issues. He continues to be an outspoken opponent of federal funding of abortion. The AZRTL PAC considered Santorum’s support of these priority issues in deciding to endorse him.

“There are few who are as articulate and passionate on life issues as Senator Santorum,” said Michelle Clements, President of Arizona Right to Life. “He not only voted the right way, he talks about the dignity and value of every human life whenever he has the opportunity, and he lives out those values in his own personal life. We are grateful for his leadership and proud to endorse him.”

AZRTL PAC acknowledges that all the Republican presidential candidates have declared they are pro-life, and that other candidates have strong pro-life voting records. Arizona Right to Life commends them for their support and defense of life.

“The one person we know is unapologetically pro-choice, even supporting partial-birth abortion and federal funding of abortion, is President Barack Obama,” said Clements. “This is a critically important election, and we take comfort in knowing that the Republican nominee will take a strong position in contrast to President Obama who is the only pro-choice candidate.”

“We encourage Arizonans to support Rick Santorum in the Republican presidential primary election Tuesday, February 28.”

For nearly 40 years Arizona Right to Life has been committed to articulating and protecting the right to life of all human beings, born and unborn. Our passion is reaching the next generation for LIFE. For more information visit www.azrtl.org.Find us on Facebook.com/AZRTL or follow us at Twitter.com/AZRTL.

New Polling Numbers for Matt Salmon in Arizona CD-5 Race

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 16, 2012
CONTACT: Adam Deguire

MEMORANDUM

In the race for the Republican nomination in Congressional District 5, former Congressman Matt Salmon continues to pull away from his only remaining opponent in every major element of the campaign – polling, fundraising, and endorsements. Since announcing his bid to return to Congress, Salmon has waged an aggressive campaign that has highlighted his experience, proven record and conservative principles as a public servant. As a result, two previous candidates have since dropped out of the race and Salmon has increased his lead over his remaining opponent according to the most recent poll. Furthermore, Salmon’s surge of momentum has also allowed him to outperform his opponent in fundraising by a 3 to 1 margin, and earned him several more endorsements from community officials, conservative leaders and pro-business groups.

Polling

Arizona Opinion conducted a telephone survey of 400 likely Republican primary voters in the newly drawn Congressional District 5 on February 8-9, 2012. Here are the findings:

  • Head to head: Salmon maintains a commanding 30 point lead over his opponent in the race for the Republican nomination, with 43.0% of respondents supporting Salmon versus 13.8% supporting his opponent.
  • Name awareness: Salmon maintains a significant name ID advantage over his opponent, with 57.7% of respondents recognizing and responding to his name versus 24.7% recognizing and responding to the name of his opponent.
  • Trusted to balance the budget: By over a 2 to 1 margin, 30.8% of respondents believe Salmon is better prepared to balance the federal budget, versus 13.5% for his opponent.
  • Trusted to repeal Obamacare: By over a 2 to 1 margin, 31.8% of respondents believe Salmon is better prepared to repeal Obamacare, versus 13.5% for his opponent.
  • Trusted to secure the borders: By nearly a 3 to 1 margin, 32.3% of respondents believe Salmon is better prepared to secure the borders, versus 10.8% for his opponent.
  • Trusted to fight against special interests: By nearly a 3 to 1 margin, 32.0% of respondents believe Salmon is better prepared to stand up to Washington insiders, versus 11.0% for his opponent.

Methodology

Arizona Opinion is an Arizona-based consulting firm with survey and other data-based research and focus groups and experience dating back to 1978. Dr. Margaret Kenski has served as a pollster for the Arizona Republican Party, Senator Jon Kyl, Congressmen Mo Udall, Jim Kolbe, and Jeff Flake, Governors Jane Dee Hull and Fife Symington, and numerous other state and local candidates. The survey had a margin of error of ±4.8% and over 85% of those surveyed said they were certain to vote in this August’s primary election.

Fundraising

  • Superior fundraising: Salmon has now raised a total of more than $500,000 for his campaign to return to Congress, out raising his opponent the past two consecutive quarters (3rd and 4th of 2011), including out raising him $152,515 to $52,434 according to the latest finance report.
  • COH advantage for the primary: Salmon currently has over $305,000 cash on hand, giving him a nearly $85,000 advantage over his opponent in money available to spend on the primary election.
  • Gaining momentum among donors: Salmon has now received contributions from over 1,200 individual donors, with more than 500 of those contributing in the last three months of 2011.

Endorsements

  • Endorsed by local leaders: Salmon has been endorsed by East Valley mayors Scott Smith (Mesa), Jay Tibshraeny (Chandler), Hugh Hallman (Tempe), Gail Barney (Queen Creek), John Insalaco (Apache Junction), 4 Mesa Councilmembers, 2 Chandler Councilmembers, 7 East Valley state legislators, and Arizona Congressmen David Schweikert and Trent Franks.
  • Widely supported by conservatives: Salmon has received endorsements from nationally prominent conservatives including Senators John Thune (South Dakota), Tom Coburn (Oklahoma) and Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania), Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-49), Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and nationally recognized conservative groups like Club for Growth PAC and Team America PAC.
  • Backed by pro-business organizations: Salmon is supported by numerous pro-business organizations including the Associated General Contractors of Arizona, Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association, and the National Association of REALTORS.

Conclusion

Former Congressman Matt Salmon remains in strong front-runner status to win the Republican nomination for Arizona’s Congressional District 5. His remaining opponent suffers from severe disadvantages in polling, fundraising and endorsements, and these challenges will be further exacerbated as other competitive primary elections begin to dominate the Arizona political environment. Without the ability to outspend Salmon dollar for dollar in voter contact, we believe that Salmon’s opponent will be unable to make up a 30 point deficit in the polls and overcome the name awareness disadvantage he currently holds among Republican primary voters.

In the remaining months before the primary election, Salmon will continue to aggressively campaign throughout the district utilizing a strong grassroots and earned media operation, and continue to showcase his superior fundraising abilities. Given these resources, Salmon can expect to continue his surge towards the all-important “50% plus 1″ formula for electoral victory.

If You Want To Know Who Richard Carmona Will Stand With In Washington, See Who He’s Standing With In New York City Tonight
Carmona Set To Fundraise With Liberal New York Senator Chuck Schumer

WASHINGTON – Richard Carmona (D-AZ) likes to preach his independence on the campaign in Arizona, but an inside look at his fundraising apparatus tells a far different story. Tonight, Carmona’s political patron liberal U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will host a fundraiser for Carmona at the posh Grace Hotel in New York City.

Schumer is an unabashed supporter of Barack Obama’s tax-and-spend agenda, supporting key initiatives like Obama’s failed $825 billion stimulus and $2.5 trillion healthcare law. Additionally, Schumer is a strong opponent of the Second Amendment and has consistently voted to raise taxes on families and small business owners in Arizona. On every major issue, Schumer has been in lockstep with President Obama, who personally recruited Carmona to run last year.

“If Arizonans want to see who Richard Carmona will stand with in Washington, they don’t need to look any further than to see who he is hobnobbing with in New York City today,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox. “It’s clear liberal Democrats like President Obama and Chuck Schumer know that Richard Carmona will be a loyal vote for their big government agenda of higher taxes, reckless spending and job-killing healthcare takeovers.”

BACKGROUND …

Senator Chuck Schumer’s Official Invitation

“This Wednesday, February 8, 2011 at 7:00 PM at the Grace Hotel in Times Square, Senator Chuck Schumer and I would like to introduce you to an outstanding individual who is running for United States Senator from Arizona. In fact many key national leaders are now working on behalf of Dr. Richard Carmona and we are asking for your support in helping him get elected as the next United States Senator from the state of Arizona.” (Peter Fontanes, Dr. Richard Carmona Reception, Accessed On Facebook On 02/08/12)

Kirk Adams Campaign Releases New Video Featuring Sen. Jon Kyl

East Valley, AZ – Honorary Campaign Chairman, Senator Jon Kyl recently held an event for Kirk Adams and it was recorded into a web video, which the Kirk Adams campaign released today.

“Some folks go back to Washington, and they change,” Kyl said, “We need folks like Kirk in Washington; these are really difficult times as you know and Kirk has the experience, he’s got common sense, he’s practical but he’s idealistic in a conservative way.”

Kirk Adams shook up Arizona’s state Capitol, and the conservative reformer will do the same in Congress.

A rising star in the Republican Party, Adams joined the state House in 2006 and was soon frustrated by the unwillingness and inability of Republicans in the Legislature to stand up for conservative principals. He launched a long-shot campaign to oust the veteran Speaker of the House and shocked the Republican establishment when he won Speakership at only 35 years of age.

Adams put the House back on a fiscally responsible track. Tackling some of the most challenging issues in Arizona history, Adams demonstrated true political courage and aggressively pushed his conservative reform agenda.

A native Arizonan and small business owner, Adams lives in Mesa with his wife JaNae and their six children.
