Brewer Capitulates to Goddard in Preview of General Election Contest

Democrat President Harry Truman is reported to have once said, “Give the people a choice between a Republican and a Republican and they will vote for the Republican every time.”

That was then, this is now.

Accidental Governor Jan Brewer’s sales tax increase compulsion has rewritten that sentiment, “Give the people a choice between a Democrat and a Democrat and they will vote for the Democrat every time.”

What a disgrace.

GODDARD STANDS WITH TEACHERS

Having Killed Irresponsible Corporate Tax Giveaways, Attorney General Supports Prop 100 For Schools

Phoenix – Today Attorney General Terry Goddard stood with teachers to support the temporary sales tax increase, Prop. 100. His support came after Governor Jan Brewer finally heeded Goddard’s call to reject a massive corporate tax giveaway which would have been detrimental to Arizona’s economy, costing Arizona taxpayers up to $950 million per year. Today Brewer said that there was “no way” she would “do the business tax cuts.”

In March, Goddard sent Governor Brewer a letter calling on her to promise to veto the fiscally irresponsible measure.  “The corporate tax giveaways that were proposed were always the wrong thing to do for our state-and thankfully we stopped them,” said Goddard.

Now that the corporate tax giveaways are off the table, Goddard announced his support for Prop. 100.  “Prop 100 is not the long term solution that we need, but we cannot balance the budget on the backs of our children.”

In contrast to the current approach taken at the Capitol, Goddard has promised an administration that will put aside political labels, and bring together leaders of all parties in order to find solutions to Arizona’s budget problems.

Geez, once again total brilliance on this site, ignoring all sense of reality.

Evil Jan raise taxes, evil Jan must be democrat.

Ronald Reagan raised taxes as a state governor.

So Saint Ronnie is a democrat?

Time for idiots to leave the R party and join the Know Nothing Party.

I thought this was written by a Democrat. So you posted Terry Goddard’s press release for him and then used it as evidence of a conclusion you wanted to reach? You used Terry Goddard press release as evidence? As truth? Serious? What is wrong with you? This site has too many contributors to it and has lost control of quality. Quantity over quality is a lousy idea. This post is junk, however you feel about Brewer.

  3. YESon100 says

Whoa nelly! The Major seems to have upset the Brewer campaign social media hacks. I think the Truman quote had something to do with Democrats acting so like a Republicans back in 1948 so that voters would prefer the authentic version over the posers. Brewer is posing as a champion of the teachers unions and other spenders. They are supporting her only as long as they need to until they can switch their support over the Goddard in the fall. SB1070 aside (any of the GOP guv candidates would have sign it to), Brewer is a weak-tea moderate go-along-to-get-along officeholder who has never had an original policy thought. She’s been a colorless and uninspiring “leader” for 28 years. She the poster child for what’s wrong with Arizona and Republican politics. Time to retire Brewer. Any of the M&M&M boys (Munger/Mills/Martin) will beat Goddard. Brewer is Goddard’s only path to the 9th Floor. Vote NO on Prop. 100 and end this farce of a governership.

    ……………………

It’s written by someone who’s complaining that (R) Brewer’s position on PROP 100 is the same as Goddard’s.

Let’s take a look at this press release. This is rich:

“In contrast to the current approach taken at the Capitol, Goddard has promised an administration that will put aside political labels …”
Then hauls out Democratic Party – Union boilerplate:

“corporate tax giveaways” (tax cuts renamed as giveways)
“we cannot balance the budget on the backs of our children” (Obama/Pelosi/Reid you listening? or laughing?)
“with teachers to support the temporary sales tax increase, Prop. 100.” (union!) (and taxes are NEVER TEMPORARY)

The current group of teachers/administrators and education EXPERTS has facilitated AZ to last in the national rankings for academic achievement, EVEN with the lion’s share of the AZ budget devoted to education.
They should be FIRED, not rewarded.

NO to PROP 100 will force a new approach.
    Long overdue.

  5. Politicians have to weigh whether the old standbys of strangling the useful services to protect entrenched interests will fly with an out of work public whose kids have been denied a good education, and thus better job prospects for their future by short-sighted greedy public-sector interest groups.
Might not be in the mood for being tricked again.

  6. Yeah, right. says

So wanumba, you support more tax giveaways to the business community so you pay higher taxes for less and less services?

I would note that we are giving away a very large amount of money in tax credits supporting private education. If you want to pay for private education, fine, then do so like I do, with my own aftertax money, without illegal or merely unethical tax credits providing “scholarships”.

We have strangled the useful services, and cut NONE of the giveaways to lobbyist supported causes.

18 years of tiny cuts for the masses and big giveaways to the boys in the backroom.

Flat tax ’em baby! no loopholes, no credits!

Wanumba is a total hypocrite…so are most here. They talk out of both checks…and I don’t mean near the nose.

They are all fired thrilled to spend money on border security…spending has increased, increased, and increased. Happy to pass on unfunded mandates of immigration law enforcement to our local police…and again…no taxes to compensate them.

Cut the waste they say. I’d like to see the corporations that we subsidize cut their waste first. Before we lay off another teacher or counselor at $40K, cut some of that corporate fat at Raytheon where people make in the 100s of K!

    kralmajales,

I sat in on the Casa Grande Elementary District Board meeting this week (not the one I’m running for) and quickly discovered the lunatics are running the assylum. Their new technology plan had 24 full time IT people, 1 computer to every 6 kids, live white boards, and on and on and money and money. When asked if there was any data to show a correlation between all the money already spend on technology and student test scores the answer was no, we have no idea if it is had any impact but children are attracted to video games so it should make them happy. Plan and money was then approved. Anyone wonder why we spend a fortune on K-12 and get squat for results? Do not talk about the inability to cut K-12 until you get info their spendthirft mess.

    ….

Ah, well … ahhh … ahem … let’s just note that my checks are better backed than the bum checks the Deficit Democrats are writing now.

Have any fiscal responsibility lectures for the Obama/Pelosi/Reid deficit spending trifecta? Your concern for our state and national budgets is such that surely you are concerned about a tripling of our national debt, with absolutely zero to show for all that spending.

The Napolitano Deficit from 6 years of Napolitano deficit spending was so irresponsible and so large AZ was forced to sell off state assets this year. Are there other ideas you have that would not require OBama selling off the Capitol Building, the Smithsonian, the LIncoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, Mt. Vernon, Monticello, the Washington Monument to pay the CHinese?
Trillions in debt, in less than two years flat.

DO you suspect the Democrats do not know what they are doing? They wailed that they had to “fix” “Bush’s deficit” and tripled it instead. How dumb is that?

Obama’s up to 5 million in personal income and he and the Missus are telling the rest of us to “sacrifice.” Yah?

How can one intone with any credibility that we shouldn’t balance the budget “on the backs of our children” while spending into a debt hole so bad our grandchildren will be paying for it. The gift that keeps on taking.

But now, suddenly fiscal tightwads against a fence. Hmm.

    ………………

I’m sorry. I laughed out loud.

  11. Before we lay off another teacher or counselor at $40K, cut some of that corporate fat at Raytheon where people make in the 100s of K!
    …..

Raytheon sells very cool and usesful stuff that’s worth millions a pop, so their employees get compensated for useful and complicated products. If they sold nothing or one or two things they’d be lower paid or out of work.

Teachers want $40K, 9 months of work with more vacations than that, and think 20 kids in a class is too much.
They are being paid for their productivity – which is pretty PISS-POOR these days. My teachers had thirty in a class, no TAs, and did everything themselves. They were head and shoulders above this generation of “educators.”

A teacher demanded of us recntly how come doctors get $400,000 a year but the teachers who taught them get $70K?
HOw stupid GREEDY is THAT? The doctor has to invest over TEN years in med school, eat peanut butter sandwiches while running up huge debt, pass the boards to be able to practice, incure MORE debt to open, equip, staff an office and find clients – and do a good job to KEEP said clients.

Can any one of those teachers who think they should be paid the same as a doctor pass a med board exam? No. How many teachers had to build the school they work in first? None. How many have to maintain a payroll in ADDITIONAL to teaching every day, as a doctor has to do? HOw many of these teachers who grumble could perform open heart surgery? Brain surgery? Set a broken bone? Put in two stitches?

This isn’t rational thinking, this is greedy thinking.

  12. wanumba,
I agree with your post. My husband is a teacher. He has a masters degree, but wanted a job that lets him travel. He loves teaching and the kids and if he wanted to makes tons of money, he wouldn’t have gotten into teaching. Teachers know what the pay is when they sign up. No one forces them to choose a teaching career.

  13. Oberserve says

Where is Brewer in the photo? Since she’s now trying to get Dem votes, she’s got to be in there somewhere. She’s probably right off to the side because she told the photographer that she’ll get in trouble with Republicans if she shows up in the photo.

  14. Oberserve says

If schools can’t find 4-5% in their budgets to cut when businesses and families are cutting back 20% or more, then someone isn’t doing their job.

  15. ranchingbound says

There are so many deeper issues that are staring people in the face than just the ones seen on the top of the stack. Maybe if we more strickly enforced our immigration laws and quite spending over $400 million a year on illegals in this state, giving them all the government funded programs that should be reserved for legal Arizona citizens only, then maybe we wouldn’t need to be looking at tax increases for education and public safety. Hell, even being an American citizen you can’t go to another state and ask for assistance if you are not a resident of that state, why should we be giving it to people that are not even citizens of our Country? Use the money for the things that the tax payers need, and then maybe we can stop looking at tax increases before we have no more income to tax!!

  16. Oberserve says

“Use the money for the things the taxpayers need.”

That’s kind of an odd statement. Whether a Mexican citizen or legal Arizona citizen is stealing from me, I kind of don’t care.

They are still stealing from me.

    End the stealing.
