Wil Cardon: The Wil To Change Washington

Here is the latest information straight from the website of Wil Cardon:

The American dream and our economic future are at risk and the policies of Barack Obama and Congress are to blame.

I have watched the politicians in Washington sink our country deeper into debt, causing high unemployment and economic despair for Arizonans.

Congress’s latest debt-ceiling cave into Obama’s reckless spending policies plays into his hands and opens the door to higher taxes while pushing a majority of the spending cuts deep into the future.

To save our country’s economy and the conservative values we cherish, we must change Washington. It is time for those outside the political establishment, with experience creating jobs in the private sector, to go to Washington and clean up the credit card economy politicians have given us.

I’m a conservative, a successful businessman, and a jobs creator. Nearly a century ago my family started out running gas stations across Arizona.

Today that company, which I run, invests in businesses and communities creating hundreds of jobs.

I am a principled conservative – first and always. I oppose higher taxes and support cutting spending and I support a balanced budget amendment. On illegal immigration I want to first secure our border, I oppose amnesty and I strongly support SB1070.

My wife Nicole and I have five wonderful children and we are proudly pro-life, pro-traditional marriage and pro-family.

Arizonans deserve a Senator who is conservative, a jobs creator and an outsider who will not view public service as a career.

I will be that Senator and that is why I am running.

Van “The Radio Man” Interviews Mayoral Candidate Jennifer Wright

Jennifer Wright has never voted for a tax hike and has never worked with or for any government unions.

Phoenix Mayoral candidate Jennifer Wright – An upset in the making!

Watch the following video from this Sunday’s Square Off as political pundit and insider, Chris Herstam makes the prediction that conservative Tea Party candidate, Jennifer Wright could possibly take second place in the upcoming August Phoenix Mayoral race. (Herstam believes that Greg Stanton will win the vote with 30-35% of the vote (not enough to clinch the win) but Wright could finish second place against Peggy Neely if Wright is able to raise enough money to get mailers out.

For those who follow politics a little closer, Chris Herstam also predicted a near win by 2010 Congressional Candidate, Ruth McClung in the General Election against Raul Grijalva.  Herstam would not make such a statement unless he could back it up with hard polling data.

Here is the video clip:

Read what Arizona Republic political reporter Robert Leger also wrote about Jennifer Wright:

“Wright could be a key factor. Most pundits, noting she entered the race late and has little money, expect her to finish in the single digits. But an important point: She collected 3,500 signatures in three weeks using only volunteers. Passion is as important as money in a campaign, maybe more so.”

The race for Mayor and Council in Phoenix will come down to a race between the government unions vs the taxpayers. Unions are out working to elect their next “bosses” in order to get the long-term benefits paid for courtesy of Phoenix taxpayers.

Help Jennifer Wright take back America one city at a time by donating to her effort. This is a potential upset in the making and you have the opportunity to make it happen and send a message loud and clear.

Gabrielle Giffords vs. Jeff Flake for US Senate?

Almost every Republican believes Jeff Flake will be the GOP nominee for the US Senate — although there may be 1-2 other interested Republicans. Nonetheless, there has been plenty of talk about whether Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will recover enough from her near mortal head injury and rise up as the Democratic nominee for US Senate. Should she make a full recovery, Jeff Flake will face the most serious competition he’s ever had to face in his political career.

In the meantime, Democrats are praying like they’ve never prayed before for a miraculous recovery in Giffords and ultimately, in their political power.

2006 Revisted – Lessons To Be Learned

With so many familiar players on the scene for the Arizona Republican Party elections coming up on Saturday, it might be worth revisiting the party election held six years ago.

Back then, conservatives were coming together behind former Congressman Frank Riggs, a conservative who was elected out of California before later moving to Arizona. But conservatives didn’t have nearly the numbers they have in today’s AZGOP and Riggs was seen as being close to then Congressman J.D Hayworth. This caused concern among Hayworth’s congressional rivals (Shadegg and Flake), while Riggs’ conservative support caused concern for Senator Jon Kyl who was up for re-election in 2006.

So Kyl recruited former Congressman and gubernatorial candidate turned lobbyist Matt Salmon to run for State Chairman. There was still considerable good will towards Salmon from his 2002 campaign and without the base of votes needed to make a real race of it, Riggs never began his campaign. Salmon was elected in January of 2005.

Of course, Salmon was a reluctant chairman, serving only because his Senator asked him to do so. Predictably, the Arizona Republican Party became little more than an offshoot of Kyl’s re-election campaign. Most of its resources and volunteers were directed towards Kyl’s race. Kyl won his race, but in the process Arizona Republicans suffered devastating losses as congressional candidates like J.D. Hayworth and Randy Graf were left high and dry without help. Republican legislative candidates were ignored and took a beating as well and Republican majorities dropped to dangerous levels. Our gubernatorial nominee received no help, except what he himself was able to raise through the party, and he got crushed by Janet Napolitano while Salmon’s hand-picked Executive Director agreed to not speak badly of Napolitano for the last few weeks of the campaign as a condition of his future employment with the Chamber of Commerce. With bare majorities that actually consisted of too many liberal Republicans, the Republican legislature got rolled over by Napolitano for the next two years, blowing up our state’s budget and getting us into the mess we still find ourselves in.

But Jon Kyl got re-elected, so it sounds like everything worked out just fine for him.

The year is now 2011 and Jon Kyl has once again emerged to handpick someone to run the Arizona Republican Party. Perhaps we should study our history so we are not doomed to repeat it?

Ronald Carmichael to enter race for AZ GOP Chair

The race for Arizona Republican Party Chairman is about to get a little more crowded as attorney Ronald W. Carmichael readies his announcement to seek the post. Carmichael, who resides in Legislative District 11, is rumored to be the hand-picked choice of Senator John McCain.

The 72-year-old lawyer is founder of Carmichael & Powell, P.C. and has served with the Maricopa County Community Foundation. Most recently, he was elected as 1st Vice Chair on LD-11.

Already, three other candidates have announced their intentions to succeed outgoing Chairman, Randy Pullen. Marty Hermanson, Vernon Parker and Bruce Ash have all submitted their letters of interest in preparation for the State Party Meeting in January.

LeAnn Hull drops out of Phoenix Mayor’s race

On Sunday, this message was posted by LeAnn Hull via her Facebook page.

To my many friends, fans and business associates,

After much soul searching, I have decided to resign from the Mayoral race. The needs of my family have always been my first priority, and with the difficulties which we are facing currently at home, I know that I am needed at home more than I am needed anywhere else! Thank all of you for your belief in me!

While the campaign only lasted 17 days, local political pundits are speculating that McCain-backed Wes Gullett may have pressured Hull to abandon her pursuit of the highly-coveted Phoenix position.

LeAnn Hull for Phoenix Mayor Fundraiser

This just breaking on Facebook!

LeAnn Hull will be conducting a fundraiser in her bid for Mayor of Phoenix. In August, LeAnn lost her bid to win the GOP nomination for congress in CD-3. Now she’s thrown her hat in the ring for Mayor and conducting a fundraiser on Wednesday, December 1st at the Club E in Phoenix. The official Facebook fan page states:

LeAnn Hull will be speaking on the future of Phoenix. She will have the Phoenix Suns Managing Partner, Robert G. Sarver there too! So, come on out and cheer on LeAnn Hull!!!

Hull’s entry in the race now brings the list of GOP candidates to two following the recent announcement of Wes Gullet.

Wes Gullett in the Phoenix Mayoral Hunt?

With the 2010 General Election almost behind us, Sonoran Alliance is beginning to hear names surface for the upcoming City of Phoenix mayoral campaign. One of those names is Wes Gullett, the former right-hand man of Senator John McCain. As of today, no paperwork has been filed with the City of Phoenix. FYI: Gullet’s bio is available online but we’ll post it here:

Wes Gullett is a founding partner in the firm FirstStrategic, Communications & Public Affairs. He works primarily on strategic planning projects and representing businesses engaged in public policy efforts.

He has directed and worked on numerous public policy projects at FirstStrategic, including successful efforts passing Propositions 203 and 100. Gullett’s main focus is on providing corporate leaders with strategic communications advice so that they can accomplish their objectives.

Gullett served as Deputy Campaign Manager for McCain 2000 during John McCain’s campaign for the Republican Presidential Nomination. His principal duties were overseeing www.mccain2000.com, the pioneering effort to bring web technology and web applications to a major political campaign. This Internet program was heralded as the first serious effort to bring Presidential politics to the Internet. Time, Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report as well as the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and the San Jose Mercury News reported on the spectacular success of the McCain Internet Campaign. Gullett also served as the co-leader of the McCain 2008 Arizona Campaign Leadership team.

In addition to working on political campaigns, Gullett has worked in the consulting world for the past 12 years. He was a partner in the Phoenix public affairs firm of HighGround, Inc. Prior to his current venture, Wes Gullett formed Integrated Web Strategy, LLC, a company that provides Internet consulting services for business, organizations and political campaigns.

Gullett has extensive experience in government. He was Chief of Staff for Arizona Governor Fife Symington from July 1993 to April 1996. In addition he served as Administrative Assistant to U.S. Senator John McCain. He also served as Senator McCain’s 1992 Campaign Manager. Gullett’s tenure with McCain was seven years and included Administrative Assistant, Community Relations Director and Northern Arizona/Maricopa County Field Director for McCain for Senate (1986).

Gullett served three years on Capitol Hill working for the U.S. Senate Republican Conference (1983-86). At the Conference, Gullett served as senior media producer. As the senior producer, Gullett oversaw the daily production of several radio and television programs.

Gullett is a native of Ottumwa, Iowa and attended The University of Iowa. He and his wife, former Arizona Representative Deb Gullett, have three children – Kelly, Katie and Nikki – and reside in Phoenix.

Gosar vs. Kirkpatrick: Reconciling awards & campaign contributions with economic reality

More odd news coming from the race in Congressional District 1, Gosar vs. Kirkpatrick

If you recall, Ann Kirkpatrick voted for the $787 stimulus bill which gave nearly $25 million in grants to General Electric.  What did GE do?  They pulled in over $156 billion in profits last year and then turned around and cut their workforce by 18,000 people!  This was NOT job creation, this was a job killer!

Yesterday, Ann Kirkpatrick held a press conference in which she was awarded a “Job Saver” award from the American Beverage Association, which, interestingly, has been a contributer to her campaign.  Coincidence? Hypocrisy? We have to wonder if the award was legitimate or just giving her “political cover.” Considering Ann Kirkpatrick has remained consistently down in the polls and her votes actually resulted in the loss of over 30,000 jobs in Arizona, this looks like an attempt to help Kirkpatrick salvage her faltering campaign. We’ll let the money do the talking on this one.

On the positive side, Dr. Paul Gosar has a plan to create jobs by actually empowering small businesses.  One way he proposes to do this is by returning the Federal Government to FY 2008 spending levels and cutting non-defense discretionary spending by 10%! Wow think of that! A congressman who will actually rein in wasteful spending and usher in economic certainty so that small business owners have the confidence to grow their business and create jobs again.

That’s the kind of Congressman we need in CD-1 and that’s why the voters should elect Dr. Paul Gosar!

Is Raul Grijalva the “sleeper candidate?”

Here is a brief video sent in to Sonoran Alliance in which Congressman Raul Grijalva catches himself falling asleep during a candidate forum in Tucson.

This sorta gives new meaning to the term “sleeper candidate” which we believe actually belongs to Ruth McClung who is about to snatch this seat away from Raul Grijalva in the coming weeks.

Dick Armey: A Legend in His Own Mind

Before going all ga-ga with Dick Armey, there are some things you may want to know about the undistinguished congressman from Texas. According to several sources, Dick Armey has been problematic to the Republican party and conservatives from the beginning. Here’s what Wikipedia has documented:

In 1998, during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, a reporter asked him what he would do if he were in President Bill Clinton’s position. He replied “If I were in the President’s place I would not have gotten a chance to resign. I would be lying in a pool of my own blood, hearing Mrs. Armey standing over me saying, ‘How do I reload this damn thing?’”[8] Several of his former female economics students went public with stories of his sexually harassing them — harassment allegedly so severe that at least one student transferred to another school. He would later divorce his wife and marry one of his students.[9]

After heavy Republican losses in the 1998 elections, Armey had to fend off a bruising challenge for his majority leader post from Steve Largent of Oklahoma, a member of the Republican class of 1994. Although Armey was not popular in the Republican caucus, Largent was thought to be far too conservative for the liking of some moderate Republicans, and Armey won on the third ballot.[10] Soon afterward, Speaker-elect Bob Livingston of Louisiana announced he wouldn’t take the post after the revelation of an extramarital affair, Armey initially seemed to have the inside track to become Speaker. As majority leader, he was the number-two Republican in the chamber. However, he was still badly wounded from Largent’s challenge, and opted not to run. The post eventually went to Chief Deputy Whip Dennis Hastert of Illinois.

Armey served another four years before announcing his retirement in 2002. In his last legislative effort, he was named chairman of the House Select Committee on Homeland Security and was the primary sponsor of the legislation that created the Department of Homeland Security.

According to Armey, he also sparred with Focus on the Family leader James Dobson while in office. Armey wrote, “As Majority Leader, I remember vividly a meeting with the House leadership where Dobson scolded us for having failed to ‘deliver’ for Christian conservatives, that we owed our majority to him, and that he had the power to take our jobs back. This offended me, and I told him so.” Armey states that Focus on the Family targeted him politically after the incident, writing, “Focus on the Family deliberately perpetuates the lie that I am a consultant to the ACLU.”[11]

As a free-market economist influenced by the ideas of Milton Friedman, Armey favored relatively open immigration and the elimination of barriers to the movement of goods and people across national boundaries.

After Armey’s retirement, fellow Texan and Republican Tom DeLay, then House Majority Whip, was elevated to Armey’s Majority Leader position. Armey’s son, Scott, ran for his father’s seat in the 2002 election, but lost in the Republican Party (GOP) runoff to Michael C. Burgess, who would go on to hold the strongly Republican 26th District for the GOP in November.

Then there was this interesting article that appeared in the Dallas Morning News last October:

WASHINGTON – Led by former Republican leader Dick Armey , the conservative group FreedomWorks has attacked the Washington establishment this year, challenging bailouts, health care legislation and other policies that violate the group’s free-market ideology.

But for more than six years, FreedomWorks’ own chairman flourished at the heart of that establishment, earning $750,000 a year to lobby for banks, green-energy producers and companies trying to shape the stimulus package that FreedomWorks opposed.

Even Armey acknowledges that his lobbying career was part of a “curious model.” While FreedomWorks is often “antagonistic to politicians of both parties … the general disposition of the lobbyist is to be sweet to officeholders,” he said.

“This is always a problem, and people have struggled with it in Washington,” the former North Texas representative said. “Few have mastered it as I have.”

A review of lobbying reports and interviews reveals that Armey and his former firm, DLA Piper, sometimes lobbied on behalf of legislation that FreedomWorks would have opposed.

While FreedomWorks asked lawmakers to pledge to stop seeking earmarks, DLA Piper represented clients seeking them. And while Armey represented a New England wind farm seeking tax credits in the stimulus, he wrote on FreedomWorks’ Web site that “billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies have done little to make alternative energy sources more practical.”

“That sort of exposes the contradiction of him being a high-priced, high-powered lobbyist at the same time he’s positioned himself and FreedomWorks as the representatives of the angry, anti-Washington populism,” said Peter Montgomery, senior fellow at the liberal group People for the American Way.

“At least until the arrangement blew up under some scrutiny, it seemed to be working well for him to play both sides of the street,” he said.

Quitting DLA Piper in August caused him to give up his salary of $750,000 a year, which he earned on top of the $550,000 he was paid by FreedomWorks in 2008.

“I hated to walk away from that kind of money,” said Armey, who now lives in Bartonville, near Flower Mound. “How many times in your life, or anybody’s life, do they have an opportunity to earn that kind of money when they are 69 years old?”

But even fellow lobbyists say Armey’s “curious model” was bound to cause problems for FreedomWorks and DLA Piper.

“There are inherent conflicts in running a grass-roots organization and representing clients professionally,” said Vin Weber, a well-known Republican lobbyist who served in Congress with Armey.

“Presumably your grass-roots organization is motivated by principles, ideology and the people who give $25 and $50 or larger sums and believe the decisions are being made based on a commitment to an ideological agenda. When you lobby professionally for a client, that is not necessarily the case. You are motivated by the clients’ interests.”

When it came to other bailouts – of the financial sector in 2008 – Armey and Freedom Works again opposed the legislation, known as TARP. The group called it “unconstitutional” because the law delegated so much power to the executive branch to make over the financial sector.

But between 2005 and 2008, Armey lobbied for Citizens Financial Group, the U.S. banking arm of the Royal Bank of Scotland, which received about $34.5 billion from the British government in October 2008, a few months before it posted the largest loss in U.K. corporate history.

Senate lobbying reports indicate Armey lobbied for Citizens Financial on legislation related to student lending and housing, including a law that created a program to help troubled homeowners refinance their mortgages. Some banks, seeking to cut their losses on bad mortgages and related investments, supported the housing legislation.

A spokesman for Citizens Financial said the bank “monitored” the housing legislation but didn’t take a position on it. FreedomWorks strongly opposed the housing legislation, equating it to a bailout of irresponsible borrowers.

In an interview, Armey said he didn’t recall his work for Citizens Financial. “I was very careful with the work I did,” he said. “I just simply don’t remember in any detail what work I did, if any, on behalf of that client.”

DLA Piper reported that its lobbyists, including Armey, lobbied on the $700 billion bailout on behalf of Raytheon. A Raytheon spokesman declined to comment about any of the company’s lobbying efforts.

Armey and others also reported lobbying for Cape Wind, a planned offshore wind farm, on tax matters in the stimulus. In February, FreedomWorks said the stimulus was too expensive and would fail to revive the U.S. economy. Soon after Congress approved the $787 billion stimulus package, the conservative group belittled the legislation with “bailout bucks” it distributed on Capitol Hill.

A Cape Wind spokesman declined to talk about Armey’s lobbying for the project, but it appears the company was interested in the stimulus because it extended a valuable tax credit that helped provide financing to many wind-energy developers.

In fact, the credit was often claimed by Wall Street investors who provided capital for the projects. With many of these investors wiped out by the recession, Congress converted the credit to a cash grant in the stimulus. Armey said his lobbying on the issue didn’t run afoul of FreedomWorks’ position because the group always advocates “reducing the burden of taxation on all persons who pay taxes.”

Perhaps a real TEA Party activist may better qualify Dick Armey’s so-called “TEA Party” ties:

“Dick Armey and his group do not and will not represent the tea party movement, and they will not take ownership of it,” said Phillip Dennis, a Little Elm resident and co-coordinator of the Texas Tea Party Patriots. “Too close to the boys in the RNC,” or Republican National Committee, he said.

I guess that one could say that former Congressman Dick Armey is in no position to criticize US Senate candidate, JD Hayworth.

Yellow Sheet Report: Rep. Adam Driggs Failed To Pay Property Taxes

According to a report in yesterday’s Yellow Sheet (subscription required), State Representative Adam Driggs failed to pay the property taxes on his home for nearly two years, resulting in a tax lien being filed and eventually sold to an investor.  The Yellow Sheet also noted that Driggs paid off the lien the same week that he told the Yellow Sheet that he was “99%” certain he would be running for Congress in CD3. Driggs’ defense was that “…the unpaid taxes were little more than a misunderstanding, and one that was cleared up almost immediately.” and he added “”I didn’t realize that until [we received a notice] that said, ‘You’re late.’ As soon as I found out, I went down and paid it immediately.”

Voters in LD11 will know that Driggs had earlier attacked his opponent Rich Davis for claiming a tax exemption on a property he no longer lived in.  News that Driggs was a tax delinquent himself will strike more than a few voters as hypocritical.

Do we really want Terry Lon Myers representing us in Congress?

Watch this video as congressional candidate Terry Lon Myers makes what appears to be an obscene gesture behind the back of his opponent, Ruth McClung during her speech at the border rally on Sunday, August 15th. At about 2:10 into the clip Terry is seen behind Ruth unaware he is being photographed.

YouTube Preview Image

This behavior from a man who thinks he can buy his way into office by running endless radio ads in the district.

Many have also also watched Myers take personal shots at Ruth demeaning the fact that she is a rocket scientist and has an accomplished professional career.

However, what is most disturbing is the fact that Myers has a police record for a two DUI’s (one extreme) and was also arrested for domestic violence. This may be the reason for Myers’ behavior toward women and a recent incident in which he called a woman a “stupid bitch” at a Republican women’s function in Tucson.

The voters of congressional district seven have to ask themselves if they really want a guy like Terry Myers representing them.

Terry Myers should apologize to Ruth McClung and withdraw from the race before he further embarrasses himself and the GOP.

Jim Kelley with the Tucson Citizen has also covered the bizarre and despicable behavior of said candidate, Terry Lon Myers.
