A Dad’s Wish for Father’s Day

A few years ago, I was asked to give a talk at a Veterans Day Ceremony.  I spoke on “The Greatest Generation” as a take-off on the Tom Brokaw book — with a twist.

I spoke about the Founding Fathers, the Constitutional Convention, Lexington, Concord, and Valley Forge – perhaps the greatest generation.  The War of 1812 (sometimes called the second Revolutionary War), the burning of Washington and the Battle of New Orleans – perhaps the greatest generation.  The Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln – perhaps the greatest generation.  World War I, trench warfare and mustard gas – perhaps the greatest generation.  World War II, Pearl Harbor, Normandy, Hedgerows, Battle of the Bulge, Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal – perhaps the greatest generation.  The Korean War (sometimes called the forgotten war), Pusan, Inchon, Chosin Reservoir – perhaps the greatest generation.  The Vietnam War, guerrilla warfare, jungle combat – perhaps the greatest generation.  The Iraq War, an all-volunteer army, IED’s, radical Islamists – perhaps the greatest generation.

I said that to say that there is no one greatest generation.  For over two hundred years, generation after generation of Americans have sacrificed their health, their wealth, their very lives to preserve this wonderful land.  You see, generations do not become great except through the great sacrifices of individuals, and individual greatness is accomplished when ordinary men do extraordinary deeds.  There is another famous quote – Evil triumphs when good men do nothing.

My son, a Marine veteran, made a decision after 9-11 to re-enlist as an EOD (Bomb Disposal) Tech at great personal and family sacrifice and is scheduled to go to a forward combat zone later this year.  He is one of tens of thousands of young men and women like himself who are giving everything, including their very life, if necessary, so their children can live in a land of freedom and liberty.

My son, the men in his unit, the men and women currently risking – and all too often giving – their lives in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, and around the world in the defense of freedom are doing all they can.  It is up to us here at home to do everything possible to make sure their placing of service over self is not wasted.

As a dad, I have one wish on this Father’s Day.  I wish that Senator Kyl and the other politicians who have been elected to preserve and defend the Constitution of the United States and the laws of the State of Arizona would decide that it is time for them to protect the sovereignty of these United States and to enforce the rule of law.

For, you see, that is what my son has risked everything for and his sacrifice deserves nothing less.  Failure  to do so could mean that his children and his grand-children may never have an opportunity to be the greatest generation.

We dare not fail.

THANK YOU! I am with you, brother. As for the reason we do NOT win wars, we have too many power-hungry men in Washington, DC and right now a country club playboy who believes that if He(as God’s stand-in)is ‘nice’ to everyone (the Dems, Putin, the Dems, the Illegals, the Dems, MS-13 et al), that we will ALL get-along. For starters, we are experiencing a polyglot of separatists beginning with a variety of Culture-rich graduations. This is just the beginning….of our ending.

My husband believes that our elected elite hate our country and want to destroy it. I disagree. I think they love power and simply want to put US in our place! How DARE we tell Kyl et al what to do?

Well said, but on the subject of the rule of law, will you also preserve the rule of law with respect to the conviction of Scooter Libby? The judge in this case is republican-appointed, tough on crime, and one of the finest when it comes to rule of law. Lets hope that Bush agrees.

First of all, you start off with a premise that is flawed, from my perspective. Republican appointed means nothing to me. Seven of the nine current Supreme Court justices were Republican appointees. I can tell you that John Paul Stevens, David Soutar, Anthony Kennedy do not meet my criteria for even being a judge, as they tend to make law instead of interpreting it. To go further, the justice that did the most damage to our country up to now was a Republican apppointee, Earl Warren.

As to Libby, I do not know the facts of the case well enough to make a definitive argument, but I believe that the underlying charges were not criminal violations and that he was a fall guy for the White House as a sop to the media.

Also, do not use either Bush as a symbol of what a good Republican President should be. He has done some good things, but overall, the damage he has done and might still do to this country will leave him with scant praise from me.

I know that the sacrifices of my son, his family and the men he serves with were not made for Scooter Libby nor for George Bush. They were for the country and the core values our country has demonstrated over its lifetime.

In fact, I am somewhat angered that you would attempt to trivialize his sacrifice in this manner. Scooter Libby is in jail over an offense cooked up for political reasons while Americans are killed, their property ransacked, their childrens’ education damaged beyond repair, their access to medical treatment in a timely manner denied, their taxes increased by over 30% in Arizona to deal with the effects of illegal immigration and the police officers of the major cities in this state have handcuffs placed on them by city councils who flaunt the federal and state laws.

So, on this Fathers Day, I wish you would get a little perspective of the sacrifice of my son and either respect it or be silent. Thank you!

You really don’t get it, do you?

This fight is not about an individual political case, although the miscarriage of justice in the Border Patrol Agent cases are certainly factors, it is about a fundamental truth that elected officials of both parties, in consort with the MSM, are deliberately selling out the rule of law for monetary and personal power reasons.

Our country cannot long endure with that level of treachery.
