Arizona Legislators Ask Tom Horne to Bow Out of Attorney General Race

Thursday, nine Arizona legislators sent a letter to Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne to exit the Republican Primary and race for AG. Spearheaded by State Representative Paul Boyer, the letter expressed grave concern over Horne’s ability to lead and serve the public has been severely compromised by a number of legal, ethical and personal problems.

Eight of Boyer’s legislative peers also signed the letter affirming that “integrity matters in our elected officials and our elections.”

Boyer, who also authored the letter wrote:

Dear General Horne:

We write to express our grave concerns over the recent allegations leveled at you, your official staff, and your campaign.

We acknowledge the investigations into wrongdoing are not complete, but that in no way lessens the dark cloud of impropriety that hangs over you and your administration.

We trust that the authorities conducting these investigations will enforce the law to the best of their abilities. We also acknowledge this process will take time and that you have a right to your day in court. Your ability to lead and serve the public, however, has already been severely compromised.

We, the undersigned, have a responsibility to act in the best interest of our state and our party. We are convinced that if you continue in your campaign for re-election, both of these interests will be damaged.

For this reason, we take the difficult step of formally requesting that you withdraw from the race for Attorney General.

Integrity matters in our elected officials and our elections. We expect more from our Attorney General, the individual who is tasked with directing the Department of Law. Arizonans have a right to expect more out of the highest-ranking legal officer of the state.

Please do what is right for Arizona and for the Republican Party.

Sincerely,

Paul Boyer

Tom Horne Letter

The letter follows other high profile requests by members of the congressional delegation asking Horne to withdraw from the race. Last week, Congressman Matt Salmon called Horne and personally asked him to exit. The following day Senator Jeff Flake stated publicly that Horne should exit. Senator John McCain also stopped short from saying Horne should get out but did note that the AG should recognize his political situation and.

Over a week ago, this blog asked the Attorney General to drop out of the race.

John McCain backing Andy Tobin in AZ01

Earlier today Andy Tobin held a high-end fundraiser in Paradise Valley for his campaign to represent Arizona’s Congressional District 1. The seat is currently represented by Ann Kirkpatrick.

The event featured the most recent Republican nominee for president, Mitt Romney. The Tobin campaign had already announced their endorsement from Jon Kyl but the invite for today’s lunch added Jeff Flake and John McCain as “Honorary Chairs” of Tobin’s campaign.

The recent addition of Flake and McCain can mean only one thing – Andy Tobin has cut a deal to support Amnesty once he gets to Washington. Those two senators would not have settled for anything less and they both are vocal proponents for lax enforcement of immigration laws. Voter of District 1 should take note.

Andy Tobin John McCain

This news follows Tobin’s public call for “legal status” for those not legally in the U.S. He added, “We’re not going to be sending all these people home”. Clearly not if he and McCain and Flake get their way. No wonder some have taken to calling him Amnesty Andy.

Will Kyrsten Sinema Support Obama’s Job Destroying Cap-and-Trade Scheme?

Kyrsten Sinema Will Have to Choose Between Saving Jobs or Backing her Friends in D.C.

WASHINGTON – Is Kyrsten Sinema going to listen to Arizona voters and save American jobs, or will she fall in line with her Democrat allies and support President Obama’s latest cap-and-trade scheme that could cost the U.S. economy $50 billion a year and eliminate an estimated 224,000 jobs?

A recent study, issued by the United States Chamber of Commerce, found that President Obama’s new cap-and-trade edict will force more than a “third of the coal-fired power capacity to close by 2030.”

“Not only will this new Obama regulation cost billions of dollars for taxpayers, but it will limit American energy production and spike electricity prices – hurting families across America,” said NRCC Communications Director Andrea Bozek. “Arizona families deserve a Republican leader in Congress that will stand up to President Obama and his Administration’s job-destroying regulations.”

ELECTRICITY: “U.S. electricity prices may be going up for good. There is a growing fragility in the U.S. electricity system, experts warn, the result of the shutdown of coal-fired plants, reductions in nuclear power, a shift to more expensive renewable energy and natural gas pipeline constraints. … ‘We are now in an era of rising electricity prices,’ said Philip Moeller, a member of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission…” (Los Angeles Times)

HEALTH CARE: “More employees are getting hit with higher health insurance premiums and co-payments, and many don’t have the money to cover unexpected medical expenses, a new report finds. More than half of companies (56%) increased employees’ share of health care premiums or co-payments for doctors’ visits in 2013, and 59% of employers say they intend to do the same in 2014, according to the annual Aflac WorkForces Report.” (USA TODAY)

FOOD: “Rising food prices bite into household budgets. Prices are rising for a range of food staples, from meat and pork to fruits and vegetables, squeezing consumers still struggling with modest wage gains.” (USA TODAY)

FLYING, THE MOVIES, OIL CHANGES, AND MORE: “David Rosenberg, chief economist and strategist at Gluskin Sheff, said other areas beyond food and energy … are getting costlier as well. ‘Airline fares are on the rise,’ he said in his morning note Tuesday. ‘Movie tickets and other such recreational services are on the rise. Repair service fees are on the rise. Shelter costs in general are on the rise. Tuition costs are on the rise. Medical service prices are on the rise.’” (NBC News)

Tempe Council Candidate Matthew Papke Leads The Pack In Cash On Hand

On the verge of the deadline to file for Tempe City Council tomorrow – Wednesday, May 28th – the number of candidates who have qualified for the ballot (pending any challenges) has increased to four. The list now includes left-wing activist Lauren Kuby, current council member, Robin Arredondo-Savage, Ernesto Fonseca and independent conservative activist, Matthew Papke. Both Kuby and Papke qualified for the ballot early in the process.

While Kuby may be the current favorite among liberal political circles, her latest campaign finance report reveals she is running third place when it comes to cash on hand. Slightly ahead of her is Arredondo-Savage who is seeking re-election and obviously holds an incumbent advantage.

But what is most surprising is the fundraising capacity of Matthew Papke who dwarfs his rivals with cash on hand. The non-establishment political newcomer has apparently caught lightning in a bottle raising a total of $65,742 since entering the race from a widespread base of support. According to his latest finance report, he currently has nearly $50,000 cash on hand.

What’s even more interesting is that this former US Marine is flying below the radar of both local reporters and the Republican establishment – probably because all eyes are focused on the ninth congressional district, statewide races and the multitude of legislative races.

Papke, who recently became a new father, is well-invested in the community having grown up in Tempe and now working among fellow Tempeans. His platform includes reducing the level of crime in Tempe – currently, the highest in the east valley; balancing the city budget and eliminating the tax on food (Mesa is the only east valley community with no tax on food).

Other candidates seeking the three available seats include current council member Shana Ellis, former legislator David Schapira, Republican Dick Foreman and Ernesto Fonseca.

Here are the current cash on hand tallies in the City of Tempe Council race:

Matthew Papke:    $49,034
Robin Arredondo-Savage:    $31,350
Lauren Kuby:    $30,030
Shana Ellis:    $25,124
David Schapira:    $7,232
Dick Foreman:    $3,441
Ernesto Fonseca:    $550

Americans for Prosperity Foundation Releases 2014 Local Government Scorecard

foundation-horizontal-black

AFPF-Arizona’s Local Government Scorecard for the 2014 fiscal year (its 7th annual local scorecard) covers 106 Arizona cities, counties and special-purpose taxing districts, and 670 local officials.  The Scorecard grades local officials on overall budgets, property tax levies and sales tax changes, and includes yearly scores for current officials going back to the 2008 fiscal year, as well as cumulative averages.  AFPF-Arizona’s Local Government Scorecard for the 2013 fiscal year comes out at a time when many local governments in Arizona are finalizing tax and budget plans for the 2014 fiscal year.

For the Local Government Scorecard with cumulative scores for FYs 2008-2013, click HERE.

For FY 2014 sub-scores on budgets, property tax levies and sales tax changes, click HERE.

(For local officials who left office after 2012, see our FY 2013 Scorecard, which has cumulative scores going back to FY 2008.)

Later this year, AFPF-Arizona will present its 2014 John W. Dawson Local Hero Award to the Arizona local official who has made the greatest impact in defending taxpayers.

AFPF-Arizona encourages local officials to make sure that budgets and tax levies do not grow faster than the private economy on which they depend.  AFPF-Arizona’s slow-growth year scoring rubric for the 2014 fiscal year allowed local governments to raise their total approved budgets and their total property tax levies by five percent without earning negative points.  Given the continued sluggishness of the economy, and given the difficulties faced by families and businesses in the private sector, AFPF-Arizona believes the Scorecard’s allowances were generous.

AFPF-Arizona relies on the final approved budgets and levies reported in Schedules A and B —the state-required documents that are included as appendices in most local government budgets.   Unfortunately, in 2013, a dozen municipalities failed to post those schedules online, despite the fact that they are required to do so under A.R.S. 42-17103, and despite an offer by the League of Arizona Cities and Towns to post the documents on its website.  AFPF-Arizona will update past and present scorecards to incorporate missing data, if city officials will send us links to Schedules A and B and to the council minutes for the meetings in which those budgets and levies received final approval.

AFPF-Arizona regrets that its Local Government Scorecard (which as far as we know is the only one of its kind in the country) can only grade changes to aggregate budgets, and cannot go into line-item detail within budgets.  Taxpayers should be advised that a high score for a local government body does not entail AFPF-Arizona’s endorsement of every line item in that government’s budget for the fiscal year.  Even in the best-run local governments (as measured by annual changes to overall budgets), vigilant taxpayers are still likely to find boondoggles and wasteful programs that should be reduced or eliminated.

For the full spreadsheet, which includes links to budget documents and meeting minutes, as well as email contacts for local officials, email AFPF-Arizona at tjenney@afphq.org.

AFPF-Arizona thanks research associate Caleb Rhodes for his help in completing this year’s Scorecard.

The War for Arizona – Brewer forms “The Coalition of Corruption “

Arizona is a conservative state full of fiercely patriotic citizens who prize individual rights, limited government, and fiscal sanity.  A friend recently surmised that Arizona may also be one of the most corrupt States due to the fact that we find ourselves at the mercy of a finger wagging Governor and 15 legislators who sold out Arizona to the Obama agenda.

The conclusion that Arizona is a conservative corrupt state is because in the 2013 legislative session Governor Jan Brewer led the 15 Republican Legistraitors to form a corrupt coalition with 100% of the Democrats in passing liberal progressive policies that harm economic growth and hand the state of Arizona over to the Federal Government.  They passed the OBrewercare Medicaid Expansion, Common Core, and then increased taxes and spending by hundreds of millions of dollars leaving the Arizona budget with a structural deficit of 400 million dollars.

And they were rewarded with a campaign chest full of money.

The 15 LegisTraitors were each given donations averaging $35,000 each at a special fundraiser for those special republicans who voted for Brewer in that special session. And then they turned around and had a second fundraiser in October. They believe that all this money will ensure their re-election.

Many of the legislators in this Coalition of Corruption are in legislative districts with double-digit Republican majorities.

The fall of 2013 brought cries of defense and a chorus proclaiming “they” would not do it again – not in an election year.  Well they did.  The 2014 session solidified the coalition of corruption and they sat smirking with their arms crossed in committee meetings demanding and receiving a budget with a half a billion dollar structural deficit.

There is absolutely no reason that a heavily Republican district should have a Republican in Name Only (R.I.N.O.) in the State Legislature.

The Alliance rejects all excuses for these traitors and the victim mentality that we must elect those with an ‘R’ beside their name.  We fully intend to fight for Arizona and for the election of principled conservatives.

Powered by audacity and conviction the grassroots throughout Arizona have stood up to criticism and belittlement and they have primary candidates for nine of the LegisTraitors.

We started with 15 LegisTraitors.

Three are not running in 2014.  Michelle shame-to-the-name-Reagan desires a reward for her treachery with a promotion to Secretary of State.  Rich Crandall moved and was replaced by good guy David Farnsworth (who we must re-elect).  John McComish quickly surrendered when faced with primary candidate Tom Morrissey.

Ten candidates have stepped up to serve David Burnell Smith, Darla Dawald, John Fillmore, Sam Merano, Shawnna Bolick, John King, Jill Norgaard, Ralph Heap, Tom Morrissey, and John Kavanagh.

The Republican Primary Season begins in Arizona. The Chamber of Commerce, corporate welfare recipients, and crony capitalists have well funded candidates running against grassroot candidates fueled by the passion of Republican principles and the belief in state sovereignty.

Pregnant Mother & U.S. Toddler Tortured while Administration Ignores

Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag

Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag

Any federal prison in America is like a five star hotel compared to the dungeons of Omdurman Federal Women’s Prison in Khartoum, Sudan.  Even the tent city Sheriff Joe developed for the pink underwear club is luxurious compared to daily beatings, rape, starvation, and bug infested cages of Omdurman’s dungeons.  But that’s precisely where 27 year-old, Dr. Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag and her 20 month-old son, Martin Wani are being held captive.  Yet, as bad as it is right now – it’s about to get a lot worse.

We all know the liberal selfies of the world can’t be bothered with confusing topics or inconsequential issues like religious freedom.  And we can rest easy knowing some nameless U.S. government official said that America was “deeply disturbed” by the Sudan court’s flogging and death sentence.  That translates into, ‘we gave the family 30 seconds of our precious time, but otherwise, we don’t really care.’

But I care.  And I want to know where Barack and Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, the liberal Dreamers and all the other Muslim apologists are in this country.  Martin and the baby are – after all – U.S. citizens, locked in a cage in a dungeon full of infection and terror.

Make no mistake, Obama and his minions spring into action to defend Islam whenever necessary.  But American lives, Christianity, or traditional values – well that’s another story all together.

The President’s own actions demonstrate where his loyalties lie, and they clearly aren’t with America or its Constitution.  In 2012, imprisoned Muslim terrorists at the American Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan cleverly passed secrets back and forth using the interior pages of the Qurans from the prison library.  When it was discovered, American troops appropriately burned the books.  After the burning, Muslim leaders seized the opportunity to strike out at America, rioting and massacring 41 people.  Of course, they ignored the obvious – that their own Muslims had already defaced the Qurans by writing in them.  American soldiers were gunned down by “friendly” Muslims on the base, and four lost their lives.

Instead of standing firm and backing our troops, our Commander-In-Chief inappropriately cowered, apologizing to Muslim leaders while disgracing himself before the world and our U.S. Military.  Obama didn’t even seem to notice the brave soldiers who were slaughtered.

Obama’s next display of Muslim love was his 2012 declarations that the Arab Spring was over and we could all look forward to coexisting peacefully in a warm Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Shari’a, dog-patch mixing bowl of sublime contentment.  Since his ridiculous declaration was followed by the Muslim Brotherhood’s killing spree where they burned down churches and dragged nuns through the streets of Egypt, he was either clueless or in cahoots.  Or both.

His adoring fans were momentarily confused, but fortunately, Obama took time to clarify things while he was in between holes at a golf course on Martha’s Vineyard.

“We don’t take sides,” the President stated. “I know it’s tempting to blame the U.S. or the West (for what?) or some other outside actor for what’s gone wrong . . . ”   But basically folks, we can’t be involved, because . . . well because the rest of his foursome was waiting to tee off.

Of course, right on the heels of Obama’s decisive golf game came the ill-timed visit of Ambassador Chris Stevens to Benghazi, which of course was right after Obama’s decision to transfer guns to the al-Qaeda-aligned Islamist insurgency in Syria.

If Stevens hadn’t been in the wrong place at the wrong time, he and three other heroic Americans might still be alive today.  Because as we all know, the entire shootout and blow-up of the embassy was coincidental to a ‘dangerous’ YouTube video release, and not the transfer of arms to terrorists.

Come on folks, is the entire leadership of this country on crack?  I only ask because two-and-a-half years later, America still doesn’t have the truth and we are so far down the road to ruin that a strong wind could end this once great nation.

Sadly, based upon Obama’s history of embracing Muslims, it doesn’t come as a huge surprise that he won’t even glance in the direction of a beautiful, intelligent 27 year-old pregnant mother being tortured, personally violated (while eight months pregnant), starved and isolated in a horrific prison full of bugs and disease.

But it is absolutely unforgivable that her son; a black, 20 month-old, U.S. citizen named Martin, who’s locked in a filthy, bug ridden cage in the same prison – can’t get so much as a nod from Obama and/or fast-tracked out of there by the State Department.

Surely the plight of this legal citizen toddler deserves the same outrage that Obama spewed forth for Trayvon.  Since Obama stated Trayvon could easily have been his own son, perhaps he could see his way clear to take the frail Martin under his liberal wing and get him freed from that hell hole.

But then again, Martin is not Trayvon, and the toddler’s crime of being a 20 month-old Christian American in the all Muslim city of Khartoum is apparently far more grievous to our nation’s black leaders, than a teen with a rap sheet.

Of course the First Lady is too busy to be involved.  After all, she just made that all important trip to Topeka, Kansas, where she so ‘eloquently’ stated, “When you encounter folks who still hold the old prejudices because they’ve only been around folks like themselves . . . it is up to you to help them see things differently.”

See things differently?  I guess it’s easier to tell that to a group of American high school students and not to her Muslim buddies in the Sudanese government.  Or maybe it’s just easier for the First Lady to bash Christianity, traditional marriage and pro-life values, since that’s exactly what she did.  That’s got to be a pretty proud moment for her.

Meanwhile, Hillary’s busy on the campaign trail trying to live down her early resume when she worked for the communist run law firm of Treuhaft, Walker and Burnstein.  True, she’s tried to bury that memory, but some people don’t forget.

But surely she hasn’t forgotten how ‘it takes a village’ to raise a child (unless the child is an American citizen in a prison in Khartoum) and that this might be the right time to raise her voice against the holocaust happening in Shari’a run countries.  I suspect she’s too busy covering up that little Benghazi thing and those unfortunate sequences of events that don’t really make a difference – to notice Meriam, the baby or Martin.

They are, after all, just fighting to stay alive and get through the massacre that’s in front of them with dignity.   But I don’t think dignity is a word in Hillary’s vocabulary.

And Mr. Kerry . . . where is your outrage?  Could it be that you used up all your emotions gallivanting around with your old pal, Jane Fonda back in the 1960’s?  Because the two of you sure shared a lot of hatred, treachery, and outrage against American fighting troops back then.  Now that you’re Secretary of State, perhaps you could pull a few strings and have coffee with someone in Sudan and demand Martin’s release . . . then again, you’re probably too busy bashing America.

And where are John Boehner, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, John McCain, Jeff Flake, and all the other ‘Dreamers’ in this country who rag on and on, spewing their diatribe about open borders and embracing illegal aliens who aren’t within ten years of legally earning U.S. Citizenship?

Considering Meriam’s young son, Martin, is already a legal American citizen who’s been subjected to unimaginable trauma and torture for the last four months, one would think the lad could at least get some attention from these collective buffoons.  Instead their silence is as deafening as the rest.

Could it be that their feigned fretting over the illegal alien population is as fabricated as their fake concern for future of this country?  Could it be that their one true agenda is about the new world order of secularist tyranny?

And finally, where is Ms. Sandra Fluke?  (Not that I really care.)

When Ms. Fluke graduated from Georgetown University Law Center, who could deny she was in a desperate plight.  The poor girl had no hope of ever being able to afford a condom or a $29 dollar pack of birth control pills.  Bless the left for rising up and supporting her – because now she can move on and live her left-wing legal life to it’s fullest, having all the unrestricted sex she desires without ever having to worry about paying for protection.

Whew!  I’m certain her trauma was every woman’s worst nightmare!

On the flip side is Meriam, eight months pregnant, being repeatedly assaulted and beaten in a prison because of her faith.  Even worse, and what many have already forgotten is that as soon as she delivers her baby, exhausted and dehydrated, she will be subjected to a horrific flogging.  Imagine her frail skin being ripped off as each of the 100 lashes tear across her back and chest.  And that is just the first of her two sentences.

She and Martin are in a living Hell.  Make no mistake, the president and his gang have the keys to free all of them.  A simple phone call would suffice, especially with a few missiles aimed appropriately at their military.  But as with Ambassador Stevens, they’d rather embrace the radical Shari’a Muslims than save two legal American children and rescue their mother who’s married to a U.S. Citizen.

Tom Horne tries to explain ethical conflict on Russell Pearce’s show

Thanks to Arizona Public Integrity Alliance for providing this video on a recent interview of Tom Horne on the Russell Pearce Show. During the show, a caller asked Attorney General Horne if he used tax dollars to employ his mistress at the office of Attorney General. Horne’s response attempted to justify the employment.
