Boehner in AZ to support McSally and Tobin

U.S. House Speaker, John Boehner, will be in Arizona on Saturday, March 29th for a fundraising lunch to support CD 2 candidate Martha McSally and CD 1 candidate Andy Tobin. The invitation says Marana but for a $500 lunch, they might as well just have disclosed that it will be at The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain (only $1,500 if you want to join the photo line).

Boehner in Arizona for Andy Tobin

Boehner’s support for McSally is not a surprise. She came within less than 2,500 votes of beating the Democratic incumbent currently holding the seat and her fundraising has been very strong this cycle. She is well positioned to beat that same incumbent, even in a standard mid-term election. And this year is shaping up to be more Republican friendly than normal. McSally does have two or three (depending on what day of the week it is) challengers in the primary, but none of them seems to have made a breakout that could reasonably threaten her near lock on the nomination.

None of the candidates running against McSally are really trying to get very far to the right of her, a la Jesse Kelly, so the fact that she is seen with the increasingly squishy Boehner will not significantly hurt her chances of securing the nomination.

The situation is quite different in the adjacent District 1. Andy Tobin faces two viable alternatives that may either have more money or are noticeably to the right of Tobin, Gary Kiehne and Adam Kwasman respectively. And they both actually live in District 1, unlike Tobin who resides outside the boundaries of AZ-01.

Kiehne is already on the air with a respectable introductory radio ad. His willingness to spend money is evidenced by his renewal of the original ad purchase. He is conservative enough to make him a viable GOP candidate and would normally attract the support of Boehner and the NRCC; a successful businessman willing to pony of some of his own cash in order to be first across the finish line. (Actually, an NRCC dream date.)

Adam Kwasman is the kind of principled conservative that gives the NRCC night sweats so it is no surprise that the NRCC and Boehner would openly support his opponent in the primary. The Washington establishment knows they cannot control Kwasman like they can Tobin, so they go all in for the more flexible Tobin.

The problem with Boehner’s gambit is that it could easily backfire. It will only reinforce Kiehne’s contention that the system is rigged and you need an outside like him who will answer to the people in the district, not leadership in Washington. Kwasman can link the amnesty leaning, budget busting record of Boehner to Tobin in an effort to further motivate the conservative base that already seems to be leaning toward Kwasman.

Two words sum of the risk Boehner is taking by openly favoring Tobin in the primary – “Raul Labrador”. In his 2010 primary, Labrador dispatched the NRCC anointed candidate and then went on to win the general election. The NRCC now has a 2/3 chance that  the AZ-01 nominee and possible congressman will not look kindly on their requests to fall in line and support Boehner’s agenda of capitulation and compromise.

Former Mayor of Sedona Endorses Tobin

Colquitt cites Andy’s conservative credentials and family values

Endorsements haven’t stopped pouring in from all over Arizona’s vast 1st Congressional District. Momentum, energy and support are clearly behind Andy Tobin’s campaign as he continues to visit every corner of the district building his grassroots network of passionate volunteers and supporters. Former Sedona Mayor Pud Colquitt (2004-2008) is the latest elected official to join the more than 30 others to voice support for Tobin’s mission to repeal ObamaCare and return Arizona’s 1st Congressional District to its conservative values.

Andy Tobin is my choice for Congress in rural Arizona,” said former Mayor of Sedona Pud Colquitt. “Andy is a common sense conservative candidate with vision. Whether he’s fighting against ObamaCare or supporting concealed carry, he always brings conservative values to the table. He has a family, including five children and retired parents. He understands the challenges facing Arizona’s 1st Congressional District because he faces them himself everyday. There’s nobody else in this race who has the proven conservative record to affect change in Washington on behalf of rural Arizona. That’s why I am endorsing Andy Tobin for Congress.”

“When we return this district to its conservative values, it will be thanks to great folks like Mayor Colquitt,” said Tobin. “I feel honored that our growing network of supporters is entrusting me to take the solutions we have implemented here in Arizona to Washington on their behalf. I will continue to put the taxpayers, families and businesses of rural Arizona above politics. I will continue to protect Arizona from ObamaCare, overbearing government regulations and government intrusion into our lives.”

Grande Valley Republican Women to host LD-8 and LD-11 Candidate Meet & Greet

LD-8 and LD-11 GOP Meet & Greet

Former Senator Jon Kyl to Endorse Mark Brnovich for Attorney General

For months I have been arguing that the race for Arizona Attorney General was going to demonstrate a change in the modus operandi of this political race. Incumbents rarely suffer a credible challenge from within the party but that appears to be what’s taking place in the nomination contest between current Attorney General Tom Horne and his challenger, Mark Brnovich.

Yesterday, we learned that former US Senator Jon Kyl is set to endorse Brnovich when a letter was leaked to the public between Kyl and southern Arizona’s most influential political kingmaker, Jim Click. Here’s a copy of the letter:

KylBrnoEndorsement

Let’s just say you know you’re in trouble as an incumbent when one of Arizona’s most popular and influential US Senators comes out in support of your challenger.

And Senator Kyl speaks for many Republicans when he infers that a Horne nomination will guarantee that the Arizona AG’s office will fall to the Democrats in November.

What should be most invigorating and encouraging to the Brnovich campaign is Senator Kyl’s personal endorsement in the letter to Click stating, “Mark Brnovich is principled, intelligent and hardworking.”

This is like a shot of adrenalin to the campaign.

Kyl continues,

“He is a talented lawyer and accomplished prosecutor. He understands that the principles of limited government, free enterprise, individual liberty, and the rule of law are cornerstones of our Republic.”

Let me emphasize. US Senators rarely make endorsements in a primary contest – especially one in which the incumbent is of the same political party.

Yes, this is a real political coup for the Brnovich campaign and the campaign can only gain more momentum as Republicans conclude that Mark Brnovich is our best qualified candidate to retain this important seat in November.

Mohave County Supervisors Endorse Tobin

Mohave County Supervisors Endorse Tobin

“Tobin is a proven conservative who understands Arizona and its complexities.”

Support for Andy Tobin’s congressional campaign shows explosive growth and momentum. Today, two Mohave County Supervisors endorse Tobin’s proven conservative record.

“As District One Supervisor for Mohave County for the past five years and Chairman for the Mohave County Board of Supervisors, I certainly value and realize the importance of a good working relationship with our U.S. Congressional Delegation and fully endorse Andy Tobin,” said Mohave County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gary Watson. “Tobin is a proven conservative who understands Arizona and its complexities. He will fight for his constituents by bringing solutions, not problems, to the table. Those of us in Arizona need an advocate like Andy Tobin. Please join me in standing with him today.”

“As a rural legislator in Mohave County, I know that our residents care about healthcare, jobs and the economy,” said Mohave County Supervisor Hildy Angius. “Andy voted against ObamaCare and led the fight to pass the first Healthcare Freedom of Choice Act in the nation. He never wavered, even when the fight got messy. A small businessman himself, Andy is the only person in this race that has worked tirelessly to make rural Arizona a place for small businesses to grow and flourish by balancing Arizona’s budget and cutting taxes; giving taxpayers and job creators more money in their pockets. This is why I am endorsing Speaker Andy Tobin for U.S. Congress in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District.”

“I am thrilled to have the support of Mohave County Supervisor Angius and Chairman Watson,” said Tobin. They have placed their trust in me to fight for rural Arizona’s conservative values when I get to Washington. I will not let them down. I am honored to add their support to our network of grassroots leaders.”

Rumors are that the Obamacare pro-Medicaid expansion industry and Governor Brewer is helping fundraise and finance his re-election campaign. Unfortunately, those revelations won’t appear until the June 30th report in several months.

This race is going to get uncomfortable for the incumbent as it probably should but as most campaign posts on Sonoran Alliance, this is where the mud flies.

Former Senate Majority Whip Frank Antenori endorses Mark Brnovich for Attorney General

Former Senate Majority Whip Frank Antenori endorses Mark Brnovich for Attorney General

Today, Republican candidate for Attorney General Mark Brnovich received the endorsement of Retired Army Special Forces Combat Veteran, former Tucson State Senator and Senate Majority Whip Frank Antenori.

“With the Obama Administration’s open hostility towards Arizona and their constant attack on our values, the need for a strong State Attorney General to defend us from these attacks is more important than ever. As a conservative leader and resident of Southern Arizona, I have no doubt Mark Brnovich has what it takes to be that Attorney General. That’s why I’m supporting and endorsing Mark Brnovich. We need an Attorney General with both the integrity and moral conscience to represent and defend our state,” Antenori said.

Former Senator Antenori served as Vice Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and was elected by his peers to serve as the Senate Majority Whip. Antenori is a Green Beret who served in the military for 20 years before moving to Tucson where he now works in the aerospace defense industry.

“Frank has an accomplished track record of service and dedication to our country. His military service, along with his time serving in the state legislature, is greatly appreciated. His support is a clear indication of the growing momentum we are building in Southern Arizona. I’m very proud to have a conservative such as Frank supporting my campaign,” Brnovich said.

Former State Senator Antenori joins U.S. Representative Trent Franks, Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery, Representatives Brenda Barton, Debbie Lesko, Paul Boyer, and T.J. Shope, former State Senators Linda Gray and Barbara Leff, Arizona Christian University President Len Munsil, former State Treasurer Dean Martin, Coolidge Mayor Tom Shope, Chandler City Councilman Jeff Weninger and national and local conservative leaders like David McIntosh, Shane Wikfors, and Jennifer Wright in endorsing Mark Brnovich for Arizona Attorney General.

Time For Toby Farmer To Come Clean, Apologize

Farmer and the Rotary Questions

Toby Farmer speaking at a Rotary Club meeting

Prior to running for the Arizona State Senate, Toby Farmer first filed to run for the State House in April of 2013.  When he formally announced for the House later in the summer, he stated that he had never planned on running for office before.  His press release stated the following:

Farmer Never Planned To Run

However, Maricopa County Court documents tell a much different story.  According to court records, Farmer had run for office before.  In fact, he was a candidate for State House in 2012 but faced legal action challenging the validity of his qualifying signatures.

Farmer Lawsuit

The nearly 30-page legal complaint documented how more than 300 of the 441 signatures filed by Farmer were invalid for a variety of reasons.  The complaint also detailed how Farmer failed to specify the date of the election as required by law, opting instead for “2012”, and how Farmer refused to list his address on the petitions as required by law, opting instead for “Litchfield Park”.

Court records also show that Farmer abandoned his bid hours before he was scheduled to appear in court as part of the legal challenge.  Farmer had been advised to withdraw as a candidate by Maricopa County Elections officials who had inspected his petition signatures and largely agreed with the claims made in the lawsuit.

Farmer WithdrawalWhy did Toby Farmer pretend that he was a reluctant first time candidate in 2013 when court records clearly show that he ran for office in 2012?

And, when faced with questions about his 2012 run, why did Toby Farmer tell precinct committeemen at his district meeting that the reason he withdrew was because “we already had two good conservatives running (in Montenegro and Mitchell) and I didn’t want to hurt their chances.”?  The petition challenge was filed by Darin Mitchell and Farmer withdrew because he knew he would lose in court.  So why now pretend he withdrew to help Mitchell and Montenegro?

It is time for Toby Farmer to come clean about his 2012 campaign and apologize for deliberately misleading the voters of LD13.

Phoenix, AZ- March 10, 2014- Today, Shawnna Bolick received Representative Rick Gray’s endorsement for Arizona House of Representatives in Legislative District 28. Representative Gray who represents District 21 and serves as Majority Whip, shares a common goal with Shawnna Bolick: a more prosperous Arizona with a leaner state government.

“Shawnna understands the importance of improving government efficiency. Her past public policy experiences at the federal and state levels will help her hit the ground running once she’s elected to office. We are in desperate need of electing common sense individuals willing to roll up their sleeves to find savings to taxpayers.
