Childish Opaska Attacks Can’t Rewrite History

Weiers’ Record as a Conservative is Second to None in Glendale Mayor Race

With early ballots on their way out, readers of this blog and voters in Glendale have been exposed to some campaign lies that are frankly, silly.  Walt Opaska himself has been telling voters on phone calls that Jerry Weiers supports the higher sales tax and his campaign’s clumsy post earlier on this site attempts to spin a number of lies in a rather awkward way.

“Maybe Walt doesn’t know better?” you might ask.  Except Walt Opaska attended the same city council meetings where Jerry Weiers spoke AGAINST the tax increases and urged the Council members to not pass it. Walt isn’t confused, he’s lying.

Team Opaska tries to make Weiers sound like a pro-tax candidate who is “an enemy of Glendale’s taxpayers.”

Yet Weiers’ own words from his website indicate the opposite.  “A tax hike is the worst possible idea for Glendale’s economy and it will not solve the cause of the fiscal crisis.  Glendale needs to move into a “no frills” mindset rather than imposing a tax hike that could hurt residents and businesses alike.” Here is more from Weiers – “Raising taxes would not only place some goods and services out of reach for many cash-strapped residents, but it could also crush the local business community because customers will be able to drive a few miles to neighboring cities to avoid Glendale’s high sales tax.  That means you could raise taxes, revenues will drop and nobody wins.”

Maybe Team Opaska didn’t use Weiers’ website to do their research on Weiers?  That wouldn’t be very bright, but maybe they just looked online at newspaper articles.  There were a lot of articles covering the letter to prospective Coyotes owner Greg Jamison and they all included this line from Jerry Weiers – “While I disagree with the lease agreement and the tax hikes, I think those who voted for those controversial measures deserve some straight answers.” (http://ricgallaway.blogspot.com/2012/07/pressure-on-jamison-to-show-his.html)

Heck, they even covered it up in Canada!  (http://blogs.theprovince.com/2012/07/30/cloudy-coyotes-ownership-picture-has-glendale-mayoral-candidate-calling-out-jamison/)

Well mistakes happen you might say, after all, how could Walt Opaska know Jerry’s position for sure?  Maybe he really does think Jerry is pro-“fat cat”.  After all, it’s not like they both signed the same letter to the City Council opposing the lease agreement and opposing the city committing so many tax dollars to such a dubious agreement, right?

Oh, that’s right, they DID.  As covered locally here (http://www.yourwestvalley.com/glendale/article_f4466adc-c548-11e1-ab53-0019bb2963f4.html)and elsewhere, and nationally here (http://aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2012-07-02/phoenix-coyotes-sale-goldwater-institute-glendale-city-council)and elsewhere.

Team Opaska is knowingly lying about Jerry Weiers and his position on the tax increases. When you know that, then the number of variations of that lie in their blog post is astounding.

But they don’t stop there.  How about this whopper?  “Jerry’s biggest accomplishment in his eight years at the Capital is his constant and persistent shakedowns of lobbyists and others at the Capital for money for the special interests he supports.”

Wow, he sounds like a real scumbag, right?  Forget SB1070, Constitutional Carry, the largest tax cuts in Arizona history, or any of Jerry’s other votes, let’s call his biggest accomplishment a “shakedown” for “special interests”.  I wonder what special interests they are talking about?  Some shadowy sinister group?  Big Oil?  Big Pharma?  Big Tobacco? Maybe they meant these folks?

No?  Ohhh, that’s right, they meant these folks.

Wow, Team Opaska is attacking Shriners Kids…

Jerry Weiers raises money for an annual charity event to provide life-saving operations for children and Team Opaska tries to turn that into something bad?  How badly does Opaska want to be Mayor that these dishonest and repulsive tactics become acceptable?

The post points out that Jerry isn’t a fiscal conservative because one year he was ranked as “Needs Improvement” by Americans for Prosperity.  They cherry pick a year and neglect to point out that the same group has given Weiers a lifetime rating of Friend of the Taxpayer. Gee, they’re so clever.

Then they fill up the comment section with little shots at Jerry and “Vote Opaska!”  And we’re not supposed to be able to figure out what is really going on?

Who would run a campaign based on telling lies about a conservative?  Well, Opaska has hired the campaign manager who ran Jerry Lewis’ campaign against Russell Pearce.  So he’s comfortable working with someone who is comfortable working with Randy Parraz to take out conservative leaders.  That alone tells you all you need to know about Walt Opaska and his phony claims.

Jerry Weiers has been endorsed by Congressman Trent Franks, the NRA, just about every conservative state legislator in the west valley (and elsewhere in many cases), and more. Trying to convince voters that Jerry isn’t a genuine conservative is a dumb move.

Opaska has been running for Mayor for nearly ten months, longer than anyone else in the field. In spite of his large head start he raised just over $7,700 TOTAL as of the last filing, had less than $3,000 left, and hadn’t even paid for his campaign signs yet.  Once that bill was paid, his campaign was broke. So what is a broke campaign with apparently little public support to do when faced with a liberal opponent supported by the Democrat Party machine and a conservative opponent who has garnered the support of a wide-ranging field of supporters?  Sure, you might think he would get out of the race and try to help the conservatives win the day for the sake of the city, his Party, and conservatives in general.  But not Walt Opaska.  He has chosen to try to kamikaze the conservative in the race instead. So expect more silly lies. Team Opaska doesn’t know any other way.

I so love this post. It is spot on. I voted for Jerry for State Representative and am proud to support him for Mayor of Glendale.

  2. Glendale resident says:

Over 4700 voter in Glendale signed the initaitive to reverse the tax cut — Jerry refused to sign and support this initiative to repeal the tax increase. In my books, that make him for the tax increase to benefit the Coyotes

  3. Glendale resident says:

In the post above i meant -> Over 4700 voter in Glendale signed the initaitive to reverse the tax increase — not cut.
