Matt Salmon: Taking a Stand against Dishonest Campaign Tactics

Friends,

It has come to our attention that Matt Salmon’s opponent for Congress has resorted to dishonest and misleading tactics in an attempt to besmirch Salmon’s longstanding conservative credentials.

Former Congressman Matt Salmon has a proven track record of cutting wasteful spending, balancing budgets and demanding fiscal responsibility. He has been honored by the Citizen’s Against Government Waste as a “Watchdog of the Treasury” and “Taxpayer Hero” for his performance in fighting to reduce the size and cost of government.

Congressman Salmon’s pro-business record also earned him the Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce each of his six years in Congress and six consecutive honors as a “Friend of Small Business” from the National Federation of Independent Business. His record of advocating for pro-business policies and fighting to reduce regulations is why he was hired by COMPTEL Inc., a leading telecommunications trade association.

Former Congressman Salmon was hired by the association in 2008. Yesterday, his opponent made an accusation that was called “blatantly false” by the Arizona Capitol Times that attempted to tie Salmon to a contribution made to Hillary Clinton by COMPTEL PAC and its board of directors in 2007 – before Salmon even worked for the organization! Regardless of the fact that contribution decisions are made by the board of directors, Salmon’s opponent has become so desperate to remain relevant that he has chosen to distort the truth to save his failing effort – only backing down when his false accusations are exposed.

This past week the Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, Tom Morrissey, wrote to Adams and Salmon warning, “misrepresentations of records, and character attacks, which are not supported by the record, do a disservice to our entire party and the integrity of both you fine gentlemen.”

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident when it comes to Salmon’s opponent using dishonest tactics to try to mislead the voters about his conservative record. Last week, Salmon’s opponent took to using a “push poll” to spread misinformation and deceitful allegations. This tactic was recently made illegal in the state of New Hampshire and is banned under the code of ethics of the American Association of Political Consultants.

We must speak out against these desperate attempts to deceive voters, and set the record straight. No one should be misled by the desperate attempts of a dishonest and failing campaign.

Salmon’s record is beyond reproach:

  • As a member of Congress, helped to balance the federal budget for the first time in over a generation
  • Rated in the top five among all 535 members of the House and Senate by the Citizen’s Against Government Waste – 6 consecutive years
  • Earned Watchdog of the Treasury from the Citizen’s Against Government Waste – 6 consecutive years
  • Received the Taxpayer Hero Award from the Citizen’s Against Government Waste
  • Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce – 6 consecutive years
  • Honored as a Friend of Small Business by the National Federation of Independent Business – 6 consecutive years
  • Rated A+ by the NRA, Lifetime member of the NRA
  • Rated 100% by National Right to Life
  • Endorsed by Club for Growth, America’s preeminent organization to promote prosperity and opportunity through economic freedom
  • Endorsed by conservative icons like Senators Tom Coburn (Oklahoma), Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania) and John Thune (South Dakota).

These are the reasons why we are supporting Matt Salmon over his opponent. We are confident the voters of Congressional District 5 will see through these deceiving and dishonest tactics and strongly encourage Congressman Salmon’s opponent to run a campaign based on the facts and the issues.

Sincerely,

Gary Pierce, Chairman of the Arizona Corporation Commission
Mark Killian, Former Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives
Chuck Gray, Former Arizona State Senator

The Adams campaign is getting so pathetic I am starting to think Nathan Sproul is running the campaign, anybody know if that’s true?

    • Adams campaign cites a source that turns out to be incorrect and Salmon campaign whines like liberals.

Salmon campaign lies about a supposed Kirk Adams push poll and Adams campaign politely asks them to retract.

Looks like all that associating and helping liberal democrats rubbed off on Salmon, so that he now plays the “victim card” at every chance possible, just like a good solid liberal.

To my knowledge, Salmon has still not given an explanation as to why he gave PERSONAL money to liberal democrats, Joe Baca and Ed Pastor. Why? What’s he hiding?

    • (Notice that EVERY accomplishment cited in this press release is from the 90s????)

    • Salmons incompetent campaign for Gov gave us 2 terms of Janet Napolitano.
Salmons hand picked aide Glen Hamer was the Exec Dir of the Party when he was Chairman and then he placed Hamer as the Dir of the AZ Chamber of Commerce where Hamer pushed the amnesty agenda for Salmon to cover all the big corps that rely on illegal alien employees.
Salmon is a lobbyist. Lots of DC cash, back room connections and selling out conservative values to liberals that are ruining our country.

I love how Matt calls Kirk out for dirty tactics and then turns around, accuses Kirk’s campaign of doing a push poll and basically slanders the Tarrance Group…One of the MOST respected polling organizations.

Hey Matt – Kirk pulled down the error immediately when he learned of it. Even said it was a mistake and wouldn’t happen again. Sounds like he man’d up to his mistake…why don’t you do the same???

    • truconserv says:

A Google search shows more than a few accusations of push-polling against The Tarrance Group.

I’d like to know the actual questions asked, verbatim, so as to make my own determination.

  4. Matt Salmon even *looks* like a duplicitous influence peddling lobbyist. No thanks. I’ll take my politicians without the greasy palms, thanks.

Does anyone care about issues anymore?

    • Does character matter?

      • catsclaw says:

Of course character matters. But from the presidential campaign down it just seems that talking about real issues has been thrown out the window. By all means run your campaign and do your best to win but this constant negativity is wearing.

    Salmon contributions
06/25/2009== $500 to PASTOR FOR ARIZONA
10/06/2009== $500 to FRIENDS OF JOE BACA

Wish – of course you’ve got to expect Greased Palms…the man was a Lobbyist! Duh! That’s what lobbyidts do….the frescoes the hands the more pork for the Congressmen like Pastor and this Bacca guy. I’d you thought JD squealed like a pig you’ll love Salmon.

  8. Nordine Crub says:

How the heck did Greasier become frescoes? darn auto-coeections on this iPhone of mine.

“Besmirched?” Someone got creative with their Microsoft thesaurus.

I wasn’t lucky enough to see the video…that being said, I’d be concerned with the desperate tone of this press release if I were Team Salmon.

    • CD5 Conservative says:

I saw the video, extremely well produce but contained a couple errors (total amount of $’s, and supporting hillary), prior to it being pulled once the Adams campaign realized the errors. Regardless, the point still remains. Matt was the President of the company. He was the “due executive” with the CEO. He was in charge of Policy and was their top lobbyist. He was their PAC treasurer starting 7/15/08.

During his time, he supported multiple Dems and gave them $’s. Twist as they might like, them there are the facts…and that’s a stubborn thing.
