Wes Gullett Statement on Phoenix Food Tax

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 25, 2011
CONTACT: Daniel Scarpinato

Tonight the Phoenix City Council failed to repeal the food tax. Wes Gullett has released the following statement in response:

“Phoenix taxpayers who are struggling in this economy continue to pay the price for taxpayer giveaways to the unions and a lack of leadership at City Hall. Once elected, I will be the fifth vote to repeal the food tax, and I’ve put forward a detailed plan to pay for it without impacting vital city services.”

Bloggers Corner: Don’t Fear the Robots, Fear the Rhetoric

By: Cliff Smith, Aide to Congressman Gosar

In this time of serious economic hardship, Congress must engage in serious debate over serious issues. There are serious and substantive disagreements between Representatives of different persuasions and these differences need to be seriously discussed and debated as we work to move our economy forward. What should not guide Congress is an endless game of unfounded attacks that leads to trumped up fear mongering to gain partisan advantage, particularly, in this case, the fear of robots.

Yes, the fear of robots.

H.R. 1904, otherwise known as Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2011, is a common-sense bill that exchanges about 2422 acres of federally owned land, rich in copper, for about 5344 acres of privately owned land, which is home to many sensitive eco-systems and endangered species. In so doing, this bill would open up one of the largest copper deposits in the world. In fact, this deposit is so large that this mine alone is estimated to produce roughly 25% of America’s copper consumption. The estimated economic impact of $61.4 billion, which would average out to roughly $1 billion per-year, add $19 billion to federal, state and local tax coffers. Roughly 3,700 jobs will be created. In fact, $700 million in private funds invested in the project, and over 500 jobs have already been created for work related to the site. So basically, the bill conserves a huge amount of sensitive lands, develops vast amounts of a natural resource vital to electronics, defense, and even green energy systems such as solar panels and windmills, and creates jobs.

But the bill’s opponents are complaining about robots. (See: 2:44:30-2:46:30)

In essence, some are claiming that this massive undertaking to extract a huge amount of valuable natural resources won’t create enough jobs, because all of the work will be done by robots. This sort of logic is reminiscent of those who opposed the creation of railroads, because they felt it would wreck the jobs of wagon wheel makers and horse breeders.

It is true, that modern mining technology uses robots to accomplish certain tasks. This is done for efficiencies sake, and for the sake of worker safety. Mining is a potentially hazardous task, and certainly a difficult one that must be done with precision. So using robots is a necessary and desirable part of the process, as it streamlines a difficult process and protects workers. Linking this to a lack of job creation, however, is absurd!

It hardly seems worth saying, because it is so obvious, but robots are part of a much larger process. You still need people to run the mine, to drive the trucks, to feed the workers, to dig the holes, to engineer the dig, to build the structures, to process the minerals, and, yes, to build, maintain, and control the robots. With respects to Arnold Schwarzenegger, we don’t have artificially intelligent, self-sufficient terminator robots yet. Finally, the copper its self provides massive real-world benefits to literally thousands of companies that hire many more people. It can be used for hundreds or thousands of different products, from piping to computers to cars to copper wiring.

Come to think of it, a lot of those components can probably be used to…make the same robots that some seem so concerned about.

To those who say this will not fix our economic problems overnight. Our economic problems were not created overnight, nor will they be fixed overnight. But to the people of Arizona, this will make all the difference in the world. H.R. 1904 aids in facilitating jobs and wealth creation with zero cost to the taxpayer and with no burden put on private business. Let’s not lose out on the big picture by obsessing over robots.

Report: Schools Must Keep Up With Shift Toward Digital Learning

Goldwater Institute
News Release

PHOENIX — Picture a typical public school classroom: Rows of students facing a blackboard, with a teacher lecturing. It’s the same scene in 2011 as it was in 1911 – and, in a world of laptop computers, smartphones and iPads, it’s wildly out of date and ineffective. But that is changing.

In A Custom Education for Every Child: The Promise of Online Learning and Education Savings Accounts, Goldwater Institute Senior Fellow Dan Lips examines how technology can be combined with the newly created Education Savings Accounts to help parents create education solutions that challenge their children and help them prepare for the real world.

In 2011, the Arizona legislature adopted Education Savings Accounts, which give special-needs K-12 students state money for educational services tailored to their individual needs. The report calls on Arizona lawmakers to expand the savings accounts program to all Arizona students, and for legislatures across the country to adopt Education Savings Accounts for all students.

“By 2020, online learning is expected to rise dramatically, with about half of all high school instruction taking place online,” said Goldwater Institute Education Director Jonathan Butcher. “Schools must keep pace, and implementing and expanding Education Savings Accounts is one way to open these tools up to all students.”

Butcher added that the growth of online learning solutions changes the discussion of choice in education – the conversation moves from choosing a school to choosing individual services that specifically meet a student’s needs.

The breadth of digital learning programs extends from full-time online virtual schools to occasional online instruction that supplements a student’s traditional coursework. The benefits include improved academic achievement and a better overall learning experience for students.

One Arizona school is leading the way. In 2011, Carpe Diem Academy in Yuma was named one of the best high schools in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Carpe Diem uses a “blended-learning” approach in which students receive half of their instruction from a computer-based learning program and half from a traditional teacher-classroom environment.

Democrats Launch Arizona Attack Ad on Mitt Romney

Here is a sample of a video interview used to create a campaign ad. In a day and age when every political appearance is assumed to be video taped, candidates should assume that anything they say will be spliced, diced and spun to benefit their opponent. In this specific case, the Las Vegas Journal Review recently conducted an interview with Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney. In the interview, they asked Romney what his proposal would be to solve the housing and foreclosure crisis. Once the clip went live, Democrats seized the opportunity to spin a campaign ad out of an abbreviated version of the clip. Watch both the ad and the unedited full version of the clip and see how Democrats take a statement out of context and use it against the candidate.

Greg Stanton campaign supplying more content to outside group

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 25, 2011
CONTACT: Daniel Scarpinato

Stanton and union allies will go to any length to stop reform

PHOENIX – Career-politician Greg Stanton says he has no connection with Phoenix Citizens United and Educate Phoenix, groups running ads smearing Wes Gullett that have been called “lies” by the Arizona Republic editorial page and labeled “false” by the Republic Fact Checkers.

But for the second time, these groups are using materials supplied by the Stanton campaign in their desperate attempt to stop reform at City Hall.

A new ad (attached) on the airwaves includes video footage taped by a Stanton staffer, Chase Williams, at a Gullett event from September.

Williams obtained the footage used in the group’s latest ad at a September 10th Gullett meet and greet at the Pomegranate Café in Ahwatukee. Williams is pictured in this photo taping the event. Previously, these groups have used false information from Stanton press releases after they were removed from Stanton’s Web site for lies.

“Greg Stanton and the unions will clearly go to any length to protect the status quo, their $3.7 million taxpayer subsidies and stand in the way of reform,” Gullett said. “Greg Stanton has called for transparency – well, now it’s time for Greg Stanton to be transparent about his coordination with these two groups that are lying to Phoenix voters.”

On October 15, a Stanton spokesman told the Republic “there isn’t any connection between the political-action committee and the campaign.”

Then why is a staffer providing footage to the group?

In addition to Greg Stanton’s lie, the group’s lies have been repeatedly knocked down by the Arizona Republic.

On October 20, the Republic editorial board wrote: “There just is no other way to say it… the ad lies.”

The Republic Fact Check graded the content of the ad “False” with zero stars.

And in today’s Republic, columnist Laurie Roberts writes: “Phoenix Citizens United – whoever that is — has teamed up with Educate Phoenix – whatever that is — to basically lie to you in hopes of scuttling Wes Gullett’s bid to be mayor.”

Politics on the Rocks Networking Event with Presidential Candidate Governor Gary Johnson

RSVP Today on Facebook!
Politics on the Rocks is pleased to announce that Presidential Candidate Governor Gary Johnson will be speaking at our upcoming free networking event on Thursday, October 27th 6:00 PM at The Mint in Scottsdale located at 7373 E Camelback Rd. in Scottsdale, Arizona. Part restaurant, part ultra-lounge, The Mint occupies a 7,000 square foot space that was previously a bank, giving inspiration to the name. In a nod to its past, The Mint’s centerpiece is the original vault door, while updated touches evoke a Hollywood Regency design influence. Click here for more information on The Mint.  We would like to thank our marketing partners Gem Ray, Scottsdale Nights, and Gia Heller of the AZ Business Experts.
Governor Johnson, who has been referred to as the ‘most fiscally conservative Governor’ in the country, was the Republican Governor of New Mexico from 1994-2003. A successful businessman before running for office in 1994, Governor Johnson started a door-to-door handyman business to help pay his way through college. Twenty years later, he had grown the firm into one of the largest construction companies in New Mexico with over 1,000 employees. Not surprisingly, Governor Johnson brings a distinctly business-like mentality to governing, believing that decisions should be made based on cost-benefit analysis rather than strict ideology. Johnson is best known for his veto record, which includes over 750 vetoes during his time in office, more than all other governors combined and his use of the veto pen has since earned him the nickname “Governor Veto.” He cut taxes 14 times while never raising them.  Wen he left office, New Mexico was one of only four states in the country with a balanced budget. Term-limited, Johnson retired from public office in 2003. An avid skier, adventurer, and bicyclist, he has currently reached four of the highest peaks on all seven continents, including Mt. Everest in 2009.  After becoming increasingly concerned with the country’s out-of-control national debt and precarious financial situation, the Governor formed the OUR America Initiative, a 501c(4) non-profit that promotes fiscal responsibility, civil liberties, and rational public policy. He traveled to more than 30 states and spoke to over 150 conservative and libertarian groups during his time as Honorary Chairman. He has two grown children – a daughter Seah and a son Erik – and currently resides in a house he built himself in Taos, New Mexico. Our charity of the month for October is “Packages from Home”.  Their sole purpose is to provide food, personal care, and recreational items to deployed American troops, at no cost to them. Since March 2005 they have averaged 1,000 to 1,500 packages a month being shipped to our heroes. Their goal is to ship many more. They collect donated items from generous patriotic citizens who live all across America. These items include non-perishable food, personal toiletries, and recreational items like games, books, music CDs and movie DVDs. If you feel inclined to participate in this charity, please bring these types of goods to the event. They will then be given to the charity to be shipped to American Troops. Imagine a world without secret voting

by Taylor Earl
Goldwater Institute

Imagine you live in a world where all your votes are public knowledge – no voter privacy, no voting booths, and no mail-in ballots. What if you could be approached in public and asked to cast your vote on the spot?

As an illustration, imagine visiting a hospital to check on a friend. Outside, you see two large groups protesting – pro life and pro choice. With no other way in, you put your head down, and walk discreetly toward the main entrance.

You let out a sigh as two shoes start moving your way. A booming voice rings out, “Do you know how you’re going to vote on ballot initiative 99?” You look up and see an intense face, a pin advocating the position you disagree with, and reinforcements closing in: “This initiative will have huge impacts on abortion rights, you know.”

You shift uncomfortably but try to stand up straight and respond. “Yes, I do know how I will vote.” Another volunteer hands you a card. “No time like the present. Go ahead, vote right now. We’ll watch.” Your gulp is audible.

Clearly this is uncomfortable and not what many of us would want – the potential for intimidation is obvious. But if the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) under President Obama gets its way, this is exactly what the workplace could look like for millions of workers.

Last year, Arizonans overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment that told workers “if your company is deciding whether or not to unionize, you have a constitutional right to cast your vote in secret.” But now, the NLRB is trying to strike down the amendment through a federal lawsuit. If they succeed, a union sympathizer would be permitted to accost a fellow employee and watch as the employee votes on whether or not to unionize.

But the Goldwater Institute is fighting back, defending the amendment in court. We’re hopeful that this effort to protect workers’ right to a secret ballot – already duplicated in five states, with more to follow this year – will prevail.
