The Turning Point

The Turning Point
A new study by the National Conference on Citizenship reports that Arizonans have become more engaged in the political process. Since 2006, voter turnout has surged, raising Arizona’s ranking from 33rd to 18th in the nation. The spike in voter registration is even steeper – boosting our rank from 48th to 27th.Consider what’s happened in our state to understand why this is so significant. In 2006, Arizona became the only state to vote against a state constitutional amendment to protect marriage. This wake-up call was a turning point for values voters. In 2008, Arizonans passed Proposition 102 to define marriage in Arizona’s constitution as only the union of one man and one woman. The victory resulted from a strong campaign to register those who supported one man, one woman marriage and to turn out those voters. The victory also resulted from a strong coalition of Arizonans from differing faiths, ethnicities, and political persuasions coming together around a shared value. But that’s not all. Those same voters elected a pro-life, pro-family legislature in 2008 and again in 2010. In the last three years alone, 38 CAP-supported bills that promote and defend foundational principles have been signed into law, raising the total number of CAP-supported bills that have become law to 101. People are waking up in Arizona to the fact that what happens at the polls and at the state Capitol impacts their family. You can make a difference! As we look ahead to the 2012 elections, the stakes are even higher than before. It’s critical that we all are registered to vote, are informed, and turn out to make sure our voice is heard.
New Lawsuit Attacks School Choice
The Arizona School Boards Association and Arizona Education Association (the teachers union) have sued to overturn Arizona’s new law establishing empowerment scholarships. The law, advocated for by CAP and our school choice allies, provides parents of children with special needs the opportunity to redirect state funds for the education and educational services that best meet their children’s needs. The facts are parents know what’s best for their children, and the state should empower them to make decisions about their education. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen school board members allow your taxpayer dollars to be used to fight school choice measures. CAP is committed to standing with school choice and parents’ rights advocates to defeat this lawsuit.

Congress Investigating Planned Parenthood
The U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee will be investigating Planned Parenthood Federation of America for improprieties regarding how Planned Parenthood uses federal dollars. This is a great first step to holding America’s largest abortion franchise accountable. Click here to read the letter Rep. Cliff Stearns sent to Planned Parenthood. Click here to read Americans United for Life’s report on Planned Parenthood.

Maricopa County Community College’s Bad Move
In a 3-2 decision this week, the Maricopa County Community College Board approved adding “gender-identity” to their non-discrimination policy. In a letter I sent to the Board prior to the vote, I explained why this vague policy should be rejected. You can read my letter here. It’s important to realize that the Maricopa County Community College Board is accountable to the voters. We see again why every election matters, especially when it comes to promoting and defending foundational principles.
Gov. Brewer Fights Back Against Radical Ninth Circuit Court Decision
Also earlier this week, Governor Brewer filed a petition requesting all of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to review a recent ruling by a three judge panel that would essentially force the state to provide health insurance benefits to domestic partners. Domestic partnerships devalue marriage – the cornerstone of our culture. The legislature and Governor Brewer were acting within their authority when they said that only spouses should receive health benefits from the state, and I applaud Governor Brewer for not allowing this bad decision from the Court to stand.

    Pro-life Conservative update.

    • True Conservative says:

ROTFLMAO – still fearful that a real conservative might come in and make a statement you don’t like, thereby causing that statement to appear in some imaginary search result?

When did being a conservative start to mean being a tin-foil hat loon?

      • wanumba says:

You’re just sore you got here too late to do your dirty trick on the first comment.
There’s plenty of space in this comments thread to expound on ALL your phony positioning and fake posturing, yaddah yaddah tin blah blah foil natter natter loon grommit grommit.

        • wanumba says:

So, what are you doing up at 2:59 am lurking at Sonoran Alliance being all pissy about missing that first comment?

        • True Conservative says:

It’s 6pm where I am. My clientele is world wide, so I travel a lot.

I actually read the article hours ago – nothing worth commenting on, as you note, it’s just an update and a rather mundane one at that. Most of the policies I agree on …

The only thing funny here is you and your delusions. You’re not a conservative, I don’t know what you are, but it certainly isn’t a conservative.

          • wanumba says:

I don’t fit your Liberal Left stereotypes, so of course you don’t know what I am and measuring any Conservative by the bigoted racist standards of your party isn’t the way to find out, is it?

          • wanumba says:

You read the article “hours ago” which is irrelevent to the question asked because you physically posted at 2:59 am so you can’t even give a straight up reply to a very simple question.

          • wanumba says:

6 pm now is Asia time. You are in Asia right now, whinging about Sonoran Alliance not having the “correct sort of Conservative?”
            Seriously?

          • True Conservative says:

If you’ve never traveled extensively for work, then you don’t know how important it is to remain in touch with issues back home. I’m not here on tourism and I’ve been here enough times that going out for the sake of going out has lost its appeal.

            Sawadee, tin hat, Sawadee.

  2. Bill winn says:

I want you to join me in putting a referendum on the ballot to ban divorce in Arizona, and to prohibit divorced individuals from holding any public office. Divorce devalues marriage, and has to be stopped now. Real conservatives do not believe in serial polygamy ( marriage, divorce, marriage, divorce) .

    • Conservative American says:

Would you care to initiate a campaign to see such a law enacted in states where same-sex marriage is legal?

    • wanumba says:

Why? You don’t even make up stupid stuff well.
Who said no one can divorce?
THe scripture is: 1) God hates divorce
      2) DO not yoke yourself to unbelievers

It’s a VERY safe bet that an adulterer or wife-beater for example is NOT a believer. UN-yoke is the correct action, separation with a period to determine if the abusing circumstances are repairable or irrevocable.

How can a man or woman live a Godly life if they are being abused daily, how can he or she raise children to what’s correct if the kids see them being abused, that the kids are miserable trapped in a house of abuse and not one of the parents lifts a finger to get out of it? God did NOT declare it a closed option, He simply states He hates divorce. He’s right, as He is always. If He said anything less, people with he usual selfish personal agendas would be pointing to the Bible saying,”See? See? He’s okay with it.” No HE’s NOT.

It’s also true that the behavior trends to once-divorced then too easy to make the same mistake and remarry wrong again. Divorce is NOT to be encouraged… as our society has done with “no-fault” and too easy to go into marriages without investing in the time to KNOW the person one is marrying BEFORE tying the knot. The old days of courtship and various testing rituals like the family canoe trip are not empoyed much anymore. Everyone’s in too much a hurry .. and pay for the haste later.

As a child of serial divorced/remarried parents, I TOTALLY agree with God’s position on this. …having “walked in those shoes several times” as Liberals like to proclaim, putting up with the crap and fatiguing high diplomacy of new marriage alliances every few years.

God is ALSO infinitely more forgiving of our faults and fails to live up to His good standards than the frauds who have shown up on this blog JUST like the unforgiving and lying Socialist totalitarians who stomp around informing everyone here what the “correct way” to think is.

The author Tolstoy captured this Socialist tyranny of false perfection in his novel “Resurrection.” He describes the Soviet gulag as imperfect guards demanding arbitrary perfection from the inmates who are guaranteed to fail because they cannot conform to the daily changing standards of perfection the imperfect guards conjure up every day. Socialists, as flawed and need of redemption as anyone else have no higher moral authority than what they woke up with in their head every morning, so they never forgive, they hammer and crush and abuse people for being human, flawed, a vicious attack on the human spirit… the Anti-CHrist.

God forgives and renews and refreshes. HIs laws are not to destroy people but to make them better, to form them to be good and happy.

      • True Conservative says:

You don’t know G-d’s position on this. You know the position fed to you by others, they also not knowing G-d’s position.

But, ultimately, this is a site about politics, not religion, and your desire to mix the two is abhorrent to true conservatives.

        • wanumba says:

So, your “conservative” position is that the Lord God Almighty, who created heaven and earth and ALL things in it and keeps it all running better than any finely tuned watch is not competent enough to make sure human beings get a Bible that states His Word accurately?

Given the complexity of the physics of the stars, the planets, the universe dynamics, that providing a reliable Book would be one of the simpler tasks to achieve. Open it up, voila! God hates divorce. Do not yoke yourselves to unbelievers.

Good thing He told us to not take other people’s word for it, but to read it for ourselves. DId you notice this one:
          Thou shalt not lie.

          • True Conservative says:

Nope – you got my position all wrong. Next question?

True conservatives respect a separation of church and state. We use our belief in G-D to inform our personal and public decisions, and we do so unabashedly, but we refrain from trying to persuade other to adopt our position based on our individual religious belief. We allow and respect that multitudes of faiths exist, even if we only recognize one true faith.

Wingnuts, however, think they have divine provenance to tell others how G-d wants them to act, based on their often times niche religious belief.

For example, TTP has been attacked by some conservative Christians as a Calvinist teaching, which they argue is a humanist, and ultimately Lucifer-inspired, approach.

I don’t wear my faith on my sleeve. It helps me in my daily struggles, and hoists me to my few successes. I don’t need to bludgeon anyone with it. I am a True Conservative.

      • The Klute says:

        wanumba,

What the hell are you talking about? Tolstoy died ten years before the Bolshevik revolution, and was a soft anarchist. The only gulags around during Tolstoy’s time would have been Tsarist.

Can’t you even get basic f***ing history right?

      • The Klute says:

For anyone who wants to check a brief overview of “Resurrection”:

The story is about a nobleman named Dmitri Ivanovich Nekhlyudov, who seeks redemption for a sin committed years earlier. His brief affair with a maid resulted in her being fired and ending up in prostitution. The book treats his attempts to help her out of her current misery, but also focuses on his personal mental and moral struggle.

Framed for murder, the maid, Maslova, is convicted by mistake and sent to Siberia. Nekhlyudov goes to visit her in prison, meets other prisoners, hears their stories, and slowly comes to realize that all around his charmed and golden aristocratic world, yet invisible to it, is a much larger world of oppression, misery and barbarism. Story after story he hears and even sees people chained without cause, beaten without cause, immured in dungeons for life without cause, and a twelve year old boy sleeping in a lake of human dung from an overflowing latrine because there is no other place on the prison floor, but clinging in a vain search for love to the leg of the man next to him, until the book achieves the bizarre intensity of a horrific fever dream.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resurrection_(novel)

Incidentally, it was written in 1899, while Lenin was in exile and Tsar Nicholas II was at the beginning of Russian.

    • Horst Kraus says:

      @ Bill will,
I second that motion! When do we start the petition drive? I am so excited after all Mark 10:9 clearly tells us that God does not want any man to tear asunder what he had joined.
“The No Tearing Asunder Law” that would be catchy. It’d pass in every State.
      Now to the responder.
      @ C.A.
Of course, of course. Doesn’t the scriptures say we are all made in God’s image.
We are all equal, that is what I understand.
Marriage is marriage. Same Sex Marriage, No Sex Marriage, Other Sex Marriage, Any Sex Marriage, It’s Marriage we need to preserve and protect.
Doesn’t it say in the good book “***and their flesh shall become one ****” something like that.
I admit I am getting a wee bit rusty; after all it was nearly 70 years ago since I studied this stuff.
Still I like Bill’s proposal. It would get rid of a lot of unsavory politicians.
I would even like to toughen the law and take their voting privileges away and prevent them from creating Centers of this and that crap policy.
      .

  3. The Truth Project is awesome! Anyone serious about putting their faith in practice needs to go through this program.

  4. wanumba says:

So WHERE are you posting from for your 2:59 am whinging whine? I see “clients” and “travel” and all sorts of haughty travel implications, but no meat.

It’s really awesome that what goes on at this little niche Arizona blog Sonoran Alliance is important enough to keep tabs on it from the far East. Further than Scottsdale east, that is or maybe west if we fly LAX to Asia, thataway.

Shane, your blog is officially gone international. Awesome.

    • The Klute says:

“So WHERE are you posting from for your 2:59 am whinging whine? ”

Well, since he mentioned “Swadee”, one would think Thailand.

    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I got your position perfectly. You have judged me by your own standards and you mock me for my faith, then tell me the ONe who had done the most for me all my life, who has protected me and guided me needs to be “out of sight” lest you get offended.”
    Yuh.

    • True Conservative says:

That’s not what I said at all.

If you took me as mocking your religion, I am sorry, and I can see how you came to that reading, so I am twice as sorry.

Allow me to explain: we all think we know what G-d wants, but I wonder if we really do. If clarity from G-d were so simple, we would never have any disagreement to what G-d demands of us.

I am not offended by religiousity. I encourage it. I engage in it. I celebrate it.

However, I am offended by hamfisted efforts to force a particular religious veiwpoint on others in a POLITICAL discussion.

I judge you by your actions, as you do me by mine. The only differance is that I don’t wear a tin foil hat and I don’t go seeking out offense were none exists. But we all know what political party does … and it’s not (R).

      • wanumba says:

So, this is really cool. Cathi Herrod’s message, who pays “Randy Parraz,” “Russell Pearce Recall” are being read and discussed on three continents. How awesome is that for “insignificant” a modest political blog Sonoran Alliance staffed by unpaid conservatives who are not judged “pure” enough for a bunch of Democrats who think that using stock phrases they can hang around and “act local.”.

So sorry that us untraveled Conservatives aren’t good enough for Miss Prissy True Lies Conservative. Oh, how is we evah gonna be as sofiscated as Truely More Conservative than Even God…because who can know what God thinks.. even though He left a very readable book that explains who He is, what He wants and what to expect from Him.
        Nooo noo!

Thou shalt not lie…but folks who don’t believe this will bite them later carry on lying.

It’s sooo uncomfortable having unwashed masses invoking God as the higher authority in everyday discussions. Athiests hate it, can’t stand God, can’t stand a syllable uttered any time any place no no no that reminds them He Is.

A true conservative wouldn’t mind at all. Wouldn’t blink. No bigga deal, BUT WELL, WELL we have someone who is so bothered by it they gotta post from the other side of the globe to complain to keep God OUT of the discourse.

Of course you celebrate “religiousity” because it’s arroogant vapid nothingness with zero accountability. Then to spoil the party, pesky annoying rednecks in inconvenient longitudes and latitudes keep injecting the real God and things get all incoveniently absolute. Like, “Thou shalt not lie.”

  7. wanumba says:

“I know this man,” Nekhludoff hastened to say; “what is he imprisoned for?”
“The police have sent him here because he has no passport. We ask them not to send such, but they will do it,” said the inspector, casting an angry side look at the old man.
“And so it seems thou, too, art one of Antichrist`s army?” the old man said to Nekhludoff.
“No, I am a visitor,” said Nekhludoff.
“What, hast thou come to see how Antichrist tortures men? There, look, he has locked them up in a cage, a whole army of them. Men should cat bread in the sweat of their brow. And he has locked them up with no work to do, and feeds them like swine, so that they should turn into beasts.”
“What is he saying?” asked the Englishman.
Nekhludoff told him the old man was blaming the inspector for keeping men imprisoned.
“Ask him how he thinks one should treat those who do not keep to the laws,” said the Englishman.
Nekhludoff translated the question. The old man laughed in a strange manner, showing his teeth.
“The laws?” he repeated with contempt. “He first robbed everybody, took all the earth, all the rights away from men, killed all those who were against him, and then wrote laws, forbidding robbery and murder. He should have written these laws before.”
Nekhludoff translated. The Englishman smiled. “Well, anyhow, ask him how one should treat thieves and murderers at present?”
    Nekhludoff again translated his question.
“Tell him he should take the seal of Antichrist off himself,” the old man said, frowning severely; “then there will he no thieves and murderers. Tell him so.”
“He is crazy,” said the Englishman, when Nekhludoff had translated the old man`s words, and, shrugging his shoulders, he left the cell.
“Do thy business and leave them alone. Every one for himself. God knows whom to execute, whom to forgive, and we do not know,” said the old man. “Every man be his own chief, then the chiefs will not be wanted. Go, go!” he added, angrily frowning and looking with glittering eyes at Nekhludoff, who lingered in the cell. “Hast thou not looked on long enough how the servants of Antichrist feed lice on men? Go, go!”
