AZGOP: Cherny Supports Obama, Fails Arizona Workers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 25, 2011

(Phoenix, AZ) – President Obama proposed increasing taxes for corporate jet owners last Saturday. The current tax law allows owners of jets to write off the depreciation over the course of seven years. Obama wants to shorten that time to five years in spite of the fact that he lobbied for the current law in his 2009 stimulus package.

And what is the position of the Arizona Democratic Party Chairman Andrei Cherny? In a recent East Valley Tribune article, Cherny was quoted as saying, “. . . ask people who are getting a tax loophole to pay for corporate jets, to sacrifice.” In total, general aviation (GA) dumps over 2.77B dollars into Arizona every year, including $855.6M in payroll. Maybe Cherny is okay with cutting manufacturing industry jobs in Arizona, but we are not.

According to General Aviation Manufacturing Association (GAMA), Arizona is currently home to 13,368 GA jobs, 314 civil use landing facilities, 6,896 active aircraft, 20,585 pilots, and 148 repair stations. Many of these companies that include AmSafe Aviation, FlightSafety International, Honeywell Aerospace, Parker Aerospace, and Universal Avionics are located in Arizona.

Baffled by Obama’s attacks on the general aviation industry, Katie Pribyl, Director of Communications for GAMA said, “U.S. general aviation manufacturing industry contributes $150B to the economy each year, and supports 1.2 million jobs.”

The word “manufacturing” is significant. Time and again, President Obama has said manufacturing jobs must be part of our recovery. However his policies amount to a punch in the stomach for manufacturing, as well as employers across the labor market. In the last week Cisco, Lockheed Martin and Borders have announced layoffs totaling over 28,000 workers.

Obama’s proposal has a lot of people saying “déjà vu”. Those old enough to remember the Luxury Yacht Tax of the 1990’s can see history repeating itself. In a failed effort to raise revenues, the government imposed a Luxury Tax of 10% on watercraft priced over $100,000. The result? Billions of dollars in lost sales, tens of thousands of lost jobs, and LOWER REVENUES!

Unfortunately, this is just another example of close minded tax-and-spend liberals believing the only solution to our fiscal crisis is to take money from the rich and give it to the poor. In reality, increasing corporate tax liability hurts everyone in the industry, including mechanics, engineers, pilots, suppliers, ground crews, repair stations, and instructors…not just the corporation itself.

It’s time the Democrats learn from the past, and avoid making the same mistakes because America cannot afford more job losses.

Rep. Jeff Flake: So Just How Broke Are We?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 25, 2011

So Just How Broke Are We?

Washington, D.C. – Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona’s Sixth District, today illustrated the size and scope of the growing national debt.

This morning, National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell announced an end to the four-and-a-half-month lockout after the players’ association and the NFL came to a compromise on a 10-year collective bargaining agreement.

The U.S. is so broke that even with the NFL’s $9.3 billion in annual revenue, it would take 1,548 years of turning it over to the U.S. Treasury before the debt would be eradicated.

“With this amount of debt, we need a lockout on federal spending,” said Flake.

Along with Senators McCain and Rubio, Congressman Flake introduced H.R. 634, the Debt Buy-Down Act, which allows taxpayers to designate up to 10 percent of their federal income tax liability to reduce the national debt. The bill then requires Congress to reduce federal spending by that amount. More information on the Debt Buy-Down Act can be found here.

NFIB Endorses Senate President Russell Pearce for Election—Again!

Small-business association standing up for lawmaker who has stood up for its members

PHOENIX, Ariz., July 25, 2011 — In a less petty political world, no association should have to issue a news released endorsing a candidate for the state legislature in a July of an odd-numbered year, but in doing so today Arizona’s leading small-business group wanted to make an early, emphatic and unqualified endorsement of Senate President Russell Pearce for election, once again, to his 18th Legislative District seat.

“We’re making our endorsement of Russell Pearce early to register small business’ strong support for one of Arizona’s most pro-small business lawmakers as he faces a needless November 8th special election to represent a constituency who overwhelmingly voted for him nine months ago just as they have in five prior elections,” said Farrell Quinlan, Arizona state director for the National Federation of Independent Business.

“Small business is rallying to stand up for the man who has stood up for small business for more than a decade.  His recall is a shameful abuse of the election process and a wasteful distraction from the Legislature’s important work of helping Arizona’s private sector create jobs again.  Nothing in Russell Pearce’s actions since the last election warrants this recall election.  The next regular election would have been the appropriate time for his political opponents to try a seventh time to defeat him.

“With apologies to noted political philosopher Dennis Green, District 18 voters will say ‘Russell Pearce is who we thought he was!’ and re-elect him handily on November 8th,” Quinlan quipped.

In the May release of NFIB’s 2011 legislative Voting Record, Pearce posted a 100-percent, pro-small-business voting tally on 15 issues vital to Main Street, mom-and-pop businesses repeating his perfect voting record on small business’ legislative agenda from 2009-2010.

The formal endorsement of Pearce was made by the NFIB/Arizona SAFE Trust, the political action arm of the association. More information can be found on President Pearce’s website at www.russellpearce.com.
