I thought he clearly stated that tax increases are not a good idea, and spending reductions are necessary.
Unless the spending reductions are going to be over 35% of current spending, some debt limit increase will be part of an agreement. I wouldn’t mind that level of spending cuts, but it might not be politically achievable. If Obama and Senate Democrats won’t agree to substantial cuts, then forcing cuts by not raising the debt limit might be the best alternative even though Obama will get to determine what gets cut through administrative rather than legislative decisions.
