You can find self-haters in any religion, and DeeDee Blase, the radical hispanic left wing activist whose work mainly consists of issuing press releases about herself and bashing Republicans, has found one. She held a meeting this week featuring a Mormon attorney, Daryl Williams, who proceeded to bash Senate President Russell Pearce to the audience. He claimed that Pearce, who is also Mormon, was going against the tenets of Mormonism by cracking down on illegal immigration. He said,
Ahhh yes, Dee Dee Blase, who created an organization called “Somos Republicans” composed mainly of herself and uses the Republican name to blast out press releases attacking anyone who isn’t open borders. She doesn’t fit into anything remotely Republican or conservative, like the legitimate organization Arizona Latino Republican Association, which has been around for years and has a huge membership, so she has created a pretend organization to harass anyone who opposes her extremist viewpoint. No one likes her in Arizona so she is trying to infiltrate the GOP in Texas. They’re on to her already and the last I heard she hasn’t been able to move there successfully. Go away Dee Dee and join the Democrat Party. They’d LOVE your open borders activism.

Get your facts straight. The Church opposed Arizona like Immigration laws prior to this statement that was made less than a month ago.
The LDS Church has a more important mission than enforcing national borders and the Church itself takes positions on laws during the legislative process and encourages Church members to be active and involved in politics. This is a complex debate and the gentleman involved has every right to state that Pierce’s stance on immigration is harmful to the true mission of the Church–that being the salvation of all souls and the preaching of the Gospel. The Church has repeatedly stated that efforts by folks towards Hispanics that appear meanspirited give the LDS Church a bad name in the Latino community and the massive portion of the Church’s new growth is in Latin America.
If Russell Pierce’s actions in Arizona harm the mission of the Church in preaching the Gospel to all of God’s children, then indeed Russell Pierce is going against the Church Leadership. And intelligent souls have every right to disagree on this matter. And for that matter, disagree with their Stake Presidency and interpret the Salt Lake City blog post to mean different things.
The LDS Church is not a dictatorship and the 12th Article of Faith does not mean that we all happily accept laws without voting or challenging them. It also does not mean we do not advocate for the positions we believe in. And it further does not mean that we keep our mouths shut when folks like Pierce are out grandstanding.
My disclaimer, I agree with many of the things our legislature is doing, but I believe Pierce is meanspirited and I don’t like him. I don’t think he is the right person to lead our party and I think he represents many of the worst traits about our party. I don’t think Sheriff Joe is the image we want to project as the face of our party either. However, they have important roles and they do good work at the jobs they need to. Just that Pierce and Sheriff Joe are egomaniacs and instead of focusing on their jobs, they are instead out making off the wall statements and trying to draw attention to themselves.

The oath of office demands that every legislator, peace officer and elected government official ‘Protect and Defend the Constitution of the United States of America. The invasion of illegal aliens promoted by Blase type so-called Republicans (including McCain and Kyl) are destroying the sovereignty of this country. Pearce has done some idiotic things that an intelligent, technically literate politician in the world of blackberries and youtube would not do.
Our party looks like the party of old racist white men sitting in cigar filled rooms of Arizona scheming and planning and counting our money. We are a party of ideas but Pearce has spent so much time on issues that he grandstands on that he is failing to make the case we need to on the budget. He is about immigration and lacks solid economic credentials. Also note, Pearce has never spent a day in his life working in the Private Sector, instead working either for or in government his entire life with ADOT, Sheriffs Dept, etc.
I don’t want our state party led by folks with Law Enforcement backgrounds. I want it led by politicians with strong private sector business knowledge. And I don’t want it led by 70 year olds who are career bureaucrats and government workers. We need strong new blood. That is not to say Pearce does not have a place, it is to say that we are making him the face of our party and it is a mistake.
And we increasingly need to be careful because the Fiesta Bowl situation may be our next Alternative Fuels fiasco. It is better than beating his wife on the side of the road, but I think we can do much better from a leadership standpoint than Pearce.
But that is not what the article was about. The article was a statement about another gentleman who had different interpretations of his religious beliefs and whoever put out the Press Release called into question his faith and held up Pearce as an example of what a good Mormon should do, while saying a High Council member should STFU and follow the 12th Article and be subject to the law. I find that original premise offensive.

You mean a Press Release by the Hierarchy of the Church that I just posted quotes from is not a statement by and having the authority of the First Presidency? It does not carry the weight of having President Monson saying it himself at General Conference?

The quote from the article was:

I would contend that the gentleman in question is quite correct that you cannot be a good Mormon and not follow the direct counsel of the Church as stated by the First Presidency through the Church PR office at the above referenced website.
Please get back to me on whether you believe the Public Affairs Office in Salt Lake accurately represents the EXACT DIRECTION OF THE PROPHET HIMSELF or whether it is a bunch of lone wolf PR folks running around issuing directives without the direct Authority of Jesus Christ on this Earth.
For non-Mormons, I readily accept that it is just another bunch of crackpot religious folks telling us what to do. But as a Mormon, it has different and profound meaning. This is a philosophical discussion of a rather complex situation and for the author of this post to say the following is insulting to me as a thinking and rational individual. We actually can disagree on policy and Pearce does not represent the sanction opinion of the First Presidency. The author of this post was wrong to say:

Montenegro, Lesko and Antenori (no surprise) endorsed McCain in 2010. They don’t think we have enough TARP, embryo dissection, limits on free speech or pandering to la raza. They think we need six more years of it.
Russell Pearce and all he stands for is who I want as an AZ GOP icon. So does 70% of Arizona when they vote his way on the ballot measures every two years.

Increasingly folks want a litmus test on candidates that if you are not “perfect” you are not “conservative”. Guess what, lots of folks supported McCain like the 60% that voted for him in the primary and the other 60% statewide that supported him in the general.
Lisa wants to say that the people of Arizona support all Russell Pearce stands for because 70% of them vote for his ballot measures and in the previous paragraph attacks Montenegro for supporting a candidate that the overwhelming majority of the state and a strong majority of Republicans also supports year in and year out when they send him back to DC.

This shows exactly how ignorant lots of Republican single issue voters are and how ignorant those that would attack a guy simply because he supports our state’s Senior Senator. Montenegro happens to be about as far right and about as anti-abortion anti embryo whatever as you can find, but your blind hatred of McCain and/or singleminded focus on Immigration alienates lots of folks. And so does Pearce. And nationally, our state’s continued focus solely on Immigration is idiotic. We made our statement and while we can continue to make incremental changes, 1070 was like launching a Nuclear warhead for Federalism. We dropped a Nuke that is about to end up in the SCOTUS and instead of waiting for a SCOTUS decision on it, Pearce keeps using our Senate agenda to throw little grenades of bills that serve nothing more than his own ego and self serving, self promoting agenda.
Let’s all recognize that there is not a damned thing we need to do about immigration right now because 1070 is in litigation. We made our statement. Let’s see if it holds up instead of playing game after game about it.

Hmmm, you mean that Sylvia Allen, Russell Pearce, McCain, and Arpaio are not all white? Interesting. I blow my credibility more by stating that they are all in their 70′s when only McCain and Arpaio are.
My argument was that the Republican leadership in Arizona is not representative of our population base and it is certainly whiter, more male, and older than the population as a whole. This is just a fact. It is up to us to decide who we want running the party and who we want to be the face of the party locally, but increasingly, our national party is in the midst of a real diverse growth with guys like Rubio and Allen West among others.
My point was that if we want to have the image of being a party of new ideas and fresh approaches, we need a younger and perhaps a more diverse face. These are not white ideas, they are American ideas so it is incumbent on us to ensure that we work to build a party that is inclusive and gathers steam among more than just old white folks. When we do that, it defeats the “Republicans are Racists” argument.
Again, we trot out guys like Arpaio and Pearce and these are not who the party is about. They are career bureaucrats and they lack the ability to communicate to a broader audience in part because of their age and race. We need to broaden the appeal of our ideas and part of that is broadening the voices that are espousing them. Are lower taxes a “white” issue? What about abortion? When blacks are 3x more likely to have one than whites, I think we can certainly make inroads with blacks in this area. Family values? Hispanics have deeply committed families that are pro-traditional marriage and most are strongly anti-abortion if they are practicing Catholics. Yet Republicans by and large fail to make the case to the broad audience.
Folks like Pearce and Arpaio harm our ability to spread our message. No matter what you think about them, it is just fact that if we have a younger and more diverse leadership team out advocating for our values, they can communicate our message more effectively than the same tired old white men who remind people of their grandparents. Maybe it works in Sun City of old town Mesa and maybe there are a lot of old voters, but our message needs to resonate with a larger appeal. It is an AMERICAN message not a white message and it is an AMERICAN message about the direction of our state and nation, not a REPUBLICAN message. We have to communicate that effectively and these guys are doing a disservice.
If you want to communicate your message, get great communicators. And even great communicators need to be people that folks identify with. Find me some blacks and Hispanics that identify with Pearce and Arpaio.
It doesn’t mean Arpaio and Pearce are wrong on the issues. It means they are not the face of the party we want going forward because for all the issues they are right on, their very involvement with the party alienates many of the folks we need to make our case on smaller government to. Montenegro is precisely the kind of guy we want as the face forward for the party. Young, Hispanic, a great communicator, and Conservative as all hell. He could give the same speech as Pearce or Sheriff Joe and it would be received by an entirely different audience that right now, we lack the ability to communicate with because Hispanics see Republicans as being racists and bigots.
Keep focusing on immigration when Pearce himself has done a masterful job of fixing the budget and is to the right of our governor on it. I give the guy a hell of a lot of credit on cutting taxes and cutting spending. I love that. But instead of spreading that message as the platform of the party and using guys like Montenegro to do it, we have Sheriff Joe and Pearce spending all their time talking 1070 and immigration. I know it is an issue and there is a need to fix it, but our message is bigger than that and the rest of our message has a much broader appeal. Lower taxes and smaller government are what we need to be spending our time advocating. Let 1070 play out in the courts as it should. The President of the Senate can surely defer to other voices to deal speak constantly on Immigration.

That’s fair enough on the surface. But, the problem is, these bright fresh faces will be smeared up and down and right and left for being “sell-outs.” It isn’t fundamentally about “race” it’s about “salami-slicing” a socialist/communist tactic to break apart a cohesive society’s natural group defenses by demonizing one group through a dirty adroit use of stereotypes to “slice” them off the main society, then attack and destroy them. The image of Republicans as “racist” has been crafted and spread hither and yon by the Democrats, the opposition political party, so it’s back to the role the media has played in conveying a “narative” that is false.
Why else do we have the pathetically absurd sight of Northern European blonde Mika Brzenzski this week using her media position earned by her daddy’s political connections, intoning that “white men should pay mroe taxes” and opining that the tax code shouldl be adjusted to make “white males” pay more?
Since a number of Democrat Mika’s own wealthy family members would be very affected by the realization of such a goal, then Mika is either stupid (well, she does have a need to refer frequently to her White House-provided talking points binder) or has an unspoken expectation that the endgame is not going to be what she’s ostensibly advocating.
“Racism” is a politically-motivated charge. So, just getting “younger” and “Hispanic” isn’t going to solve that problem, unless it’s paired with a more fundamental strategy. Look at the example of Lt. governor Michael Steele who was the first black Lt. Gov in Maryland’s history and the first black candidate for Senator. He was leading the state in polling all day but after polls closed, majority black Baltimore dumped enough votes to erase, then overcome his lead. Black voters came out in droves to vote for … the old white guy (D). Hmm.
They couldn’t say Steele (R) was racist against blacks, but they did throw Oreos at him, a clear, racist message.

It was Obama who created the Dream Act with Democrats. the GOP Republikkkan Congress would not vote on it at all… then they delayed it, then scheduled it behind the Health Care Reform Act, then delayed that too.
Next, they voted NO on it as an entire majority of a party to Kill the Bill…. not to mention all Republikkkrat Governed States, were bypassing Federal Congress and Circumventing the Constitutional Safeguards and Branches of Government for Passing Laws, and Created the SB1070 Anti Mexican Anti latino law…which was the testing ground for other Red States to follow suit. or copy from one Republikkkan State to the Next, Republikkkan…these policies are not Democrat… only Republikkkan, right winged policies… not left wing.
