A Perfect Candidate

Just finished watching the PBS documentary, A Perfect Candidate, from 1996. That was the year Lt. Col Oliver North ran for US Senate in the Commonwealth of Virginia against incumbent Democrat, Chuck Robb. Many of you recall it was the year, Republicans took back the US Senate and House from Democrats after 40 plus years of Democratic control. North ended up losing by three percentage points 42.9% – 45.6% with an Independent spoiler taking 11.4% of the vote.

Here’s a video clip from the film featuring Mark Goodin, Senior Strategist for the campaign in which he explains the art of campaigning.

As someone who intensely worked on a US Senate campaign, what really struck me was Goodin’s realization that North should have remained “negative” on Robb all the way through election day. The campaign chose to instead be positive. Goodin ends up blaming himself for losing and not beating the hell out of Robb.

Will we see the same type of campaigning  take place here in Arizona over the next 19 months? My guess is yes. Case in point: John McCain spent $24 Million in negative advertising against JD Hayworth in the 2010 Primary Election. McCain’s people are closely allied with Jeff Flake’s people so expect any challengers to Flake’s campaign to be experience the same type of scorched-earth campaigning that you saw in 2010.

In the race for Arizona’s US Senate seat will money talk?

A quick review of the financial standing and performance of three of the candidates reveals some interesting details.

These are screen shots from the Open Secrets website showing campaign finance information from the 2010 election cycle:

First, we will look at Congressman Jeff Flake’s information:

Next, Congressman Trent Franks:

Finally, former Congressman JD Hayworth, who ran statewide for US Senate in 2010:

Jeff Flake announces for US Senate, Arizona CD-6 seat opens up

Congressman Jeff Flake has just announced his entry into the US Senate race to succeed Senator Jon Kyl.

This leaves Arizona’s 6th Congressional seat open. Given the district overwhelmingly favors Republicans, expect another stampede of candidates to run for the starting blocks.

Entrants include:

Senate President, Russell Pearce
Speaker of the House, Kirk Adams
Former State Senator Chuck Gray
2010 CD-6 candidate, Jeff Smith
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu
Any number of other current and former state legislators and city councilman including Phoenix City Councilman, Sal DiCiccio
Any number of east valley political activists

With the urgency to raise money and establish a formidable primary presence, any state legislator will feel the urgency to enter the race quickly. Under Arizona’s resign to run law, resignations in the State Legislature would prompt another flurry of political announcements and appointments to succeed resigning legislators! The task of replacing state legislators would then fall to the elected precinct committeemen in those legislative districts and ultimately to the County Board of Supervisors.

Let the 2012 Republican Primary begin!
