Kirkpatrick’s Illegal Pay to Play Connections

Kirkpatrick Earmark Requests tied to Suspicious Lobbyist Donations

PRESCOTT, AZ –First, Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick took $10,000 from SEIU, the group leading the boycott against Arizona, and for 53 days has ignored requests to return the money.  Now we find out that Kirkpatrick accepted campaign donations from lobbyists on the very same day she made earmark requests for their pet projects.  Voters in Arizona’s First Congressional District deserve to know why Ann Kirkpatrick is accepting tainted money.

“It didn’t take very long for Ms. Kirkpatrick to be bought by the special interests financing her campaign,” said Gosar Communications Director Stefani Zimmerman.  “We already know that she’s soft on illegal immigration from her record in the State Legislator so it’s no surprise she accepted thousands of dollars from SEIU.  BUT, it is shocking that she would accept campaign donations from lobbyists within minutes of requesting the earmarks they lobby on behalf of.  This is the kind of corruption you expect from Chicago politicians, not rural Arizona.  It is possible that Ms. Kirkpatrick broke the law.  The days of trading taxpayer money for campaign contributions have come to an end.  The timing of these donations and earmark requests need to be investigated.”

Here are the facts:

  • On April 3, 2009, Kirkpatrick made $4,608,500 in earmark requests for Northern Arizona University (NAU).  Kirkpatrick has taken a total of $3,750 in campaign contributions from four lobbyists who lobbied Congress on behalf of Northern Arizona University for a biodefense laboratory expansion.  One of those lobbyists, Barry Dill, contributed to her campaign within minutes of requesting these earmarks for NAU.

  • On December 19, 2009, Kirkpatrick secured $1.6 million in earmarks for the NAU Forensic Center Updates projects and that very same day she took $2,000 from three of the lobbyists who lobby Congress on behalf of NAU for this project.
  • On March 22, 2010, Kirkpatrick made $300,000 in earmark requests for Childhelp.  Interestingly, Kirkpatrick took $2,000 in campaign contributions from Ellen Riddleberger- the lobbyist that lobbied Congress for appropriations on behalf of Childhelp.  Of that money, Kirkpatrick took $1,000 within a week of requesting the FY 2011 earmark for Childhelp.
  • On March 22, 2010, Kirkpatrick made $5,000,000 in earmark requests for the City of Flagstaff and then accepted a campaign contribution from Robert Holmes, the lobbyist who lobbied Congress on behalf of the City of Flagstaff, less than a week after requesting this earmark.

Ed Pastor Blames Bush, Admits he was told to vote for TARP

Wednesday night, both Congressman Ed Pastor and Republican nominee Janet Contreras attended a congressional candidates forum sponsored by Arizona Bridge to Independent Living. Several other candidates were present but the real showdown occurred over the CD-4 race.

When asked about his vote on several issues, Pastor proceeded to blame George W. Bush and then admit he was told to vote for TARP. He also confessed his support for Cap and Trade legislation.

Republican candidate, Janet Contreras, clearly left her impression with those in attendance when she stood up in clear contrast to Pastor’s big government, less jobs approach to governing.

Contreras, who opposes Cap & Trade and would have voted against every bailout and government takeover, also spoke passionately about protecting the most vulnerable members of society.

Here is a brief video expose of what was said at the event:

Newt Gingrich is a conservative? Are you SURE?

Then why is he schilling for Al Gore?!?

As everyone by now surely knows, this November’s elections will be the most important in recent memory and will very likely see a Republican wave, similar to or possibly in excess of that which brought Gingrich to the Speakership back in 1994.

That election came to be called a Revolution, although the long-term effects were mixed, to say the least. To many, the election of ’94 was an opportunity to roll back the tide of big government that was eventually squandered.

This year, we hope to take advantage of another opportunity to stem the tide of runaway government control of our lives. We hope to recover our lost liberties and repair our broken economy by rejecting the collectivist call to central planning and returning to the traditional American system of unleashing human ingenuity through freedom, competition, and unfettered innovation.

In order to do that, though, I believe we must keep firmly in mind the principles that guide us to the polls.

For far too long, candidates have gotten into office on big talk, with little delivery. Democrats fight to expand government everywhere and always, and far too many Republicans end up embracing socialism light in the name of “bipartisanship.”

Many see this last failing as the reason the Revolution of ’94 ultimately failed. In many ways, the surging Tea Party movement is a rejection of this kind of compromise on principle.

So if you are approached by Newt claiming he’s helping Republicans, you might want to remember that Newt also wants us to help Nancy Pelosi fight global warming.

Or Climate Change.

Or whatever it’s called this week.

Two years ago, Mr. Gingrich got comfy with Nancy on a couch in front of the Capitol Building to do a commercial for We Can Solve It, a video project for celebrities and politicians, who recorded messages about the urgency of stopping global warming.

Their website is http://www.wecansolveit.org/ . While that’s disturbing enough, a little digging reveals We Can Solve It is actually a project of The Alliance for Climate Protection. You can confirm the link between the two here. The We Can Solve It campaign is the third project on the list of the Alliance’s “Our Work” page.

The Alliance for Climate Protection was founded in 2006 with the mission to “close the gap between the 77% of people who believe that there is solid evidence that the Earth is warming and the 47% who believe that warming is linked to human activity.”

The founder and chairman of the Alliance for Climate Protection is Al Gore.

Now, I’m sure that Mr. Gingrich will not be discussing any of this at the NCGOP’s fundraiser on the 27th. I’m sure he’ll be rallying the conservative faithful to get out there, work a polling location, walk their precincts, make phone calls, and do all the other necessary work to win on November 2nd. That is all well and good, and I’m all for that.

Nevertheless, I have to take with a grain of salt the words of anyone who thinks it’s important to help Nancy Pelosi and Al Gore save the planet from… well, us.  Newt, you got caught!  Let the political backpeddling begin!

GET RID OF THE RINOS FOLKS.   Given the above, that means Newt’s gotta go too.

To all the congressional newbies (Quayle, Schweikert, etc) stay away from the globallists and RINOs. If you succumb, eventually we’re gonna catch ya.  And by then, McCain wont be around to protect you like he did Jon (2005 Cornryn/Kyl) “Amnesty” Kyl and John “TARP Bailout” Shadegg.

Jesse Kelly MoneyBomb!

Arizona’s 8th district is a swing seat this election year and political experts predict a Republican takeover could come down to winning this very seat. The Cook Political Report, The Rothenberg Political Report, Real Clear Politics and Election Oracle all handicap this race as a “toss up”. By some accounts, this race could be decided by as few as 640 votes.

Jesse Kelly can and will beat Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and here is why:

-AZ-8 Republicans hold a 17,000 registered voter advantage over Democrats.

-AZ-8 chose McCain over Obama in 2008.

-A Republican (Rep. Kolbe) held the seat for 22 years before retiring. Rep. Giffords was swept into the seat during the 2006 Democrat takeover.

This is a seat we can win. This is a seat we must win.

This morning we launched a $50,000 money bomb to raise money for ONLY television ads. A contribution of $10, $25, $50 or $100 will go directly into ads and will make a difference.

Arizona Republic not content to just report news; actively seeking certain types of people in order to create their own slanted news

Reporters are tweeting outrageous messages on Twitter

We urge our readers to regularly check the Twitter accounts of local leftist newspaper reporters. Some of the things they are tweeting are pretty offensive. You do not need a twitter account to be able to view their most recent tweets.

Take this tweet from http://twitter.com/azcInsider on Oct. 14. Reporter Michelle Lee is actively trying to find people who will complain that they have been hurt by cuts in AHCCCS, Arizona’s welfare program. Not content just to report the news, the Republic is actively seeking out certain types of people in order to create their own biased news.

We’re looking for women affected by AHCCCS cuts to annual exam coverage. Contact Michelle Lee: 602-444-8290/michelle.lee@arizonarepublic.com11:25 AM Oct 14th via web

Can you imagine if the paper was biased to the right? The tweet would read, “We’re looking for women who have successfully gotten off of AHCCCS and no longer depend on the government…..”

Some more examples:

Reporter Yvonne Wingett’s tweets are almost all negative towards Sheriff Arpaio, and positive towards the corrupt County Supervisors. Here are several tweets she made in a row all hammering Arpaio -

Reporter Dan Nowicki tweeted twice that JD Hayworth wasn’t endorsed by Arizona Tea Parties. But that wasn’t true; he was endorsed by 17 mostly local Arizona Tea Parties; there were only a couple that didn’t endorse him, because they were prohibited by law since they were formed as nonprofits.

  1. @jennifereduffy Nat’l tea party must be overlooking Hayworth’s “free money” infomercial and past pork votes – many AZ tea partyers wouldn’t.11:16 AM Sep 19th via web

Reporter Nick Martin tweeted no less than FOURTEEN times about Chuck Coughlin’s ill-fated response to a question about Governor Brewer’s health, “Hey, why don’t you ask if Terry Goddard is gay.” Was it really necessary to hit our Republican Governor’s campaign manager that many times?

Here are those Reporters’ Twitter accounts. Follow them and call them out when they send out biased tweets.

Arizona’s community colleges produce dropouts, not graduates

by Matthew Ladner, Ph.D.
Goldwater Institute

The Center for Social Organization of Schools at John Hopkins University coined the phrase “dropout factories” to describe high schools in which 60 percent or fewer of the students graduate.

The same term can be used to describe Arizona’s community colleges. High schools have advantages such as mandatory attendance laws that keep younger children in classes. So I use a more lenient measuring stick for higher education. For community colleges, I consider the graduation rates for full-time students three years after they enroll, rather than the standard two-year completion rates.

Sadly, every Arizona community college qualifies as a dropout factory. The average three-year completion rate is 18.2 percent.

Is this just the inevitable result for community colleges? The answer is no. Florida’s average three-year completion rate is 86 percent higher than Arizona’s. The Florida community college with the lowest graduation rate would rank third highest overall in Arizona.

Arizona lawmakers will struggle to balance the 2010 and 2011 budgets when the next session begins in January. Eliminating state funding for these dropout factories could be a relatively appealing option. The results cannot get much worse for the community colleges, while removing administrative bloat and having students carry more of the financial burden just might help to improve matters. Students likely would approach their school work more seriously if they were paying more of the cost, and graduation rates would rise.

Dr. Matthew Ladner is vice president of research for the Goldwater Institute.

Court restrains anti-Prop 107 spokesperson who threatens to attack Ward Connerly

Phoenix, AZ – A Maricopa County Court official issued a legal restraining order against the spokesperson for a group opposing Proposition 107 on Friday after he sent a public message threatening to physically attack Ward Connerly, a pro-Prop 107 leader.

Anti-Prop. 107 spokesperson Steve Russell was ordered to stay more than 100 feet away from anti-affirmative action leader Connerly after Russell publicized his threat late Thursday night.

Proposition 107 would ban race and gender based affirmative action in Arizona. Connerly is nationally known for opposing government race and gender preferences and was participating in a debate on Prop. 107 hosted by the Goldwater Institute in Phoenix. Russell is a designated spokesperson for a group calling itself ‘Protect Arizona’s Freedom’, which supports Arizona’s existing affirmative action programs and opposes Prop. 107. Russell was not part of the Goldwater debate.

Maricopa County Justice of the Peace Clancy Jayne issued Friday’s court order after Russell sent out the threatening electronic message late Thursday evening following the debate. Russell announced publicly on his Twitter account that he “would not hesitate to punch connerly [sic] in the face if I saw him…”

Russell served as spokesperson for PAF at the taping of a televised Secretary of State Town Hall Meeting in September. During his taped official PAF statement opposing Prop. 107, Russell accused Connerly, who is black, of being financially supported by the Ku Klux Klan.

“Unfortunately, I must take violent threats seriously, especially when they are in the context of other inflammatory rhetoric, such as has been characteristic of Mr. Russell” Connerly stated. “A few affirmative action supporters are quite radical and I have been threatened before. Mr. Russell has attempted to incite hatred against me with his bizarre KKK smears, and now feels compelled to brag about his willingness to assault me physically. I don’t know how stable Steve Russell is.”

Russell describes himself as “radical, somewhat socialistic” on the profile he provides to online dating website Match.com.

PAF is lead by AZ State Rep. Krysten Sinema (D-Phoenix), who serves on the group’s advisory committee. Rep. Sinema recently told Time Magazine that, “I’m very concerned about the tone of politics in recent years. We’ve seen a decline in civility and bipartisanship, and a rapid increase in hostility between those who have differing opinions. I think this has led to the alienation of the public in governance, which jeopardizes democratic participation.”

http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2023831_2023829_2025183,00.html#ixzz12V061JIK

Connerly called on Rep. Sinema to walk her talk on civility.

“I call on Rep. Sinema, the Mayor of Phoenix, and other high profile public officials who are opposing 107 to condemn Mr. Russell and disassociate themselves from his threats,” Connerly stated. “I have been threatened before and have had a pellet gun fired at my office building because of my stance in favor of the principle of equal treatment for all. No one should be threatened with violence in our nation because of their views.”

Senator Sylvia Allen Releases Proposition Recommendations

2010 Arizona Propositions
By Senator Sylvia Allen

“Let the People choose” was the slogan of a proposition a few years ago. It gave the false impression that, if the people choose, it will be a far superior choice than if we allow our elected representatives to make our laws. Passing laws through the proposition or referendum process directly by the people’s majority vote has far-reaching consequences for us and future generations. It is a heavy responsibility and one we should not take lightly. Remember, we have no one to hold accountable but ourselves and, once a law is passed, the likelihood of reversing it is very slim.

The problem with the rash of propositions that have appeared in the last few years is that we, the voters, rarely take the time to be informed or involved. When determining whether or not to support a proposition, it would be wise to follow these guidelines.

  1. Is it Constitutional?
  2. Does it increase the size of government and require more of our money?
  3. Is it the proper role of government?
  4. Will it remain accountable to the people or create more government bureaucracy?
  5. Will it be a burden to future generations?
  6. Does it corrupt the law?
  7. Will it weaken the fiber of society and thus harm families?
  8. Does it infringe upon our individual or property rights?

Proposition 106 – Health Care Freedom Act – YES

This proposition would amend the Constitution to prohibit any law from compelling participation in any particular health care system. It is written to give Arizona patients the ability to opt out of federal mandates. The proposition protects individual freedoms in choosing health care.

Proposition 107 – Stops Special Treatment for Some – YES

This repeal of affirmative action policies allows for fair opportunities for all job candidates and those applying for universities or colleges and amends the Constitution so that no preferential treatment or discrimination can take place based on race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin.

Proposition 109 – Protects our Individual Rights – YES

This proposition asks voters to establish hunting, fishing and harvesting wildlife as constitutional rights for Arizona citizens. It prevents any law or rule that would restrict these rights. Arizona’s citizens greatly benefit from the outdoor activities offered by our bountiful natural resources. Proposition 109 is an important step toward protecting our ability to practice those sports and activities.

Proposition 110 – Protect Military Bases – YES

It asks voters to amend state land laws to allow for the exchange of public land. Approval will enable the military to work with the State Land Department to protect both state land and the military operations that bring billions of dollars in economic benefit to the state each year.

Proposition 111 – Lieutenant Governor – NO

If approved, this proposition would change the title of Secretary of State to that of Lieutenant Governor in 2015 due to the fact that the office of SOS is next in line to the governorship. My biggest objection is that the Governor and Lieutenant Governor candidates would run together.

Proposition 112 – Increase deadline for filing propositions – YES

This proposition increases the time for filing an initiative petition to no less than six months preceding the date of the election for the proposed measures. This will allow the State and County to have more time for signature verification which is very important when moving to create a new law.

Proposition 113 – Protect Right to Privacy – YES

This proposition would amend the constitution. The right to vote by secret ballot is a fundamental right. If unions attempted to institute a “card check” instead of the secret ballot, workers would face intimidation to support union organization.

Proposition 203 – Marijuana – NO

Please take the time to read this entire bill at the Secretary of State website. This bill is vast and complicated. This issue needs to go through the legislative process for hearings and changes. If the people pass this bill, it will almost be impossible to make changes if, in the future, we see we have opened a “Pandora’s Box.” For instance, it is not clear whether or not a person with a prescription can drive under the influence without being ticketed or whether employers can drug test. It allows some to grow the plants in their yard. There are many loopholes that will allow for abuse. California has seen a huge increase in the use of marijuana among young people since legalizing medical marijuana. Please vote NO. More info – www.navajocountydrugproject.com

Proposition 301 – Redirect Land Money – YES

The state of Arizona is in a budget crisis, and we need permission from our citizens to redirect money from the Land Conservation Fund ($123 million) to the General Fund. Arizona is mostly open space due to federally controlled land around us. We don’t need this money to buy more; we critically need it to fund K-12, healthcare, and agencies.

Proposition 302 – Redirect Early Childhood Money – YES

Yes, the state is in terrible trouble due to years of overspending and creating new programs, and then the recession hit, and now we have to make very hard choices. If the people are not willing to reform two programs that are not critical programs then how can you expect the legislature to have the courage to reform and reduce government also? Prop 302 is asking to re-direct money out of a program that is duplicative. We have many state agencies and programs that help children. This agency has no oversight and has created a huge bureaucracy to administer this new program. $345 million would be re-directed to children’s healthcare programs.

More of County Supervisors’ trumped-up charges against MCSO proven false

County Supervisors’ own budget officials say overseas trips were legit; more evidence County Supervisors are on witch hunt against Sheriff’s Office and Arpaio

Trips taken by Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office employees to Belize and Puerto Rico were for legitimate law-enforcement purposes, county budget officials have determined.

The publicly funded extradition trips cost $14,575 and had been highlighted by the county’s Office of Management and Budget last month as examples of potential misspending by the agency.

Read the memo

The trips surfaced amid allegations by county budget officials that Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s agency may have misspent as much as $80 million in detention funds over the past five years. Sheriff’s officials dispute the findings.

During their presentation last month to the Board of Supervisors, budget officials used photos of a fancy hotel and luxurious pool to illustrate the travel expenses.

But an Oct. 7 memo obtained by The Arizona Republic shows county budget officials have concluded the trips were “valid extraditions and the costs are reasonable, based on the hotel and available airline flight information.” The conclusions were drawn after additional records were provided by the Sheriff’s Office.

According to the county memo, a defendant was extradited from Belize City on warrants for stalking and failure to pay child support. Two deputies spent two days in Belize City to retrieve the defendant. The trip cost $4,154. Separately, two deputies and one lieutenant flew to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for three days to extradite two defendants on warrants for selling pot. That trip cost $10,421.

“In both cases, the defendants were prosecuted,” the county memo said. “The length of the trips seems reasonable, but we would like the opportunity to discuss the extra day in the Puerto Rico trip.”

Asked if the findings vindicated the Sheriff’s Office, Interim Chief Deputy Jerry Sheridan responded, “I would’ve liked to have had something a little bit stronger clearing us, but we just didn’t get it. The county put it out there and made the Sheriff’s Office look like we were inappropriately spending money on these elaborate trips, and when it came time for a retraction, we didn’t really get it.”

The memo indicates that Deputy County Manager Sandi Wilson and her staff still have questions about other trips “that require additional explanations.”

Wilson wants to meet with sheriff’s administrators to talk about other travel and extradition trips “in order to clear up any perceived or inaccurate details.”

Janet Contreras Vs. Ed Pastor : Abortion

By Ghost32

Pro-Life Or Pro-Choice?

It’s simple enough: In Arizona CD4, conservative Janet Contreras is pro-life while liberal Ed “Pelosi Puppet Progressive” Pastor is pro-choice. Any political neophyte could have guessed that much. However, as they say, the Devil is in the details. So…a bit of a closer look at each candidate’s position on abortion, perhaps?

Why not.

Although not much investigation is required to ascertain Janet’s stance, which is straightforward: If you’re pregnant, please do bring that child into the world alive and healthy if you can. Her candidacy has been endorsed by Arizona Right To Life, and that pretty much sums it up. She’s as pro-life as Sarah Palin.

Ed Pastor, though? Now, that’s a little more complex. For one thing, he’s an avowed Roman Catholic. The Church has been strongly pro-life, anti-abortion from Day One. Last time I checked with the Pope, it still is. At www.catholic.com/library/abortion.asp, the official dissertation on abortion begins with the following words:

The Catholic Church has always condemned abortion as a grave evil. Christian writers from the first-century author of the Didache to Pope John Paul II in his encyclical Evangelium Vitae (“The Gospel of Life”) have maintained that the Bible forbids abortion, just as it forbids murder.

Yet Congressman Pastor not only advocates abortion, he advocates the extreme forms of abortion. I’m more or less pro-choice myself…but not even I can stomach the idea of the following Ed Pastor Vote Match Responses:

NO on banning partial-birth abortions. (This one is definitely murder in my book.)

NO on funding for health providers who don’t provide abortion info. (Your favorite doctor doesn’t take Medicaid or Medicare patients. Why? Because he’s pro-life, refuses to provide stacks of abortion literature in his waiting room, and is therefore punished by a federal government that is perfectly willing to deny him any of your taxpayer dollars. Period.)

NO on making it a crime to harm a fetus during another crime. (Your wife is seven months pregnant with your first child when a mugger assaults her at the mall and the baby dies as a result. Wife recovers (physically). Simple assault, the baby’s death at the mugger’s hands not even a misdemeanor…according to Ed.)

Dang. How do you reconcile those two things, Congressman? Did you abandon the Roman Catholic Church? Have you been excommunicated but managed with the help of a complicit mainstream media to cover up your disgrace? I’m not judging your personal faith–God knows I’m not God–but how do you manage such blatant hypocrisy and still sleep at night?

Because I just don’t understand for one second how any man could possibly be a Roman Catholic of true faith and a believer/supporter of abortion in even the early stages of pregnancy…let alone the three horrific examples listed above.

It’s a mystery for sure.

Connections

Campaign slogans can be cool things…or they can betray the users in unforeseen ways. One of the coolest was coined by challenger Ruth McClung in Arizona CD7 after incumbent Raul Grijalva foolishly called for a boycott of our mutual home state:

BOYCOTT GRIJALVA, NOT ARIZONA

You couldn’t beat that with a stick. Ed Pastor’s slogan in CD4, on the other hand? It sounds sort of okay on the surface:

PUTTING PEOPLE BEFORE POLITICS

Not so cool, really, now is it? Hard-left Progressives are expected to support abortion “all the way”. But that’s all about politics. Were Ed to suddenly begin practicing Truth in Advertising (don’t hold your breath), that slogan would read:

PUTTING POLITICS BEFORE PEOPLE, PUTTING POLITICS OVER ON PEOPLE, AND THEN LYING ABOUT IT TO THE PEOPLE.

Anyone who’s so much as heard Janet Contreras speak from the podium realizes she’s real. There’s not a hypocritical bone in the lady’s body…but she does have a steel spine, will support the rights of all her constituents (even those not quite yet born)…and deserves to represent Phoenix in Congress as We the People take our country back just 13 days from now.

States must not ignore powerful avenue for bringing back federalism

by Nick Dranias
Goldwater Institute

The federal government has spent wildly and imposed excessive mandates because the 50 states have neglected to check its growth. No “silver bullet” exists to instantly restore the proper balance of power between the states and federal government. Nevertheless, efforts to revive federalism need to include the best tools available, including an application from two-thirds of states legislatures for Congress to call a convention for proposing constitutional amendments that would reform the federal government.

An amendments convention can target specific reforms desired by the states because its agenda would be determined by the state applications. Delegates to the convention would be selected by the states and would be bound to stay within the scope of that agenda. And three-fourths of the states would have to ratify whatever the amendments convention proposes.

In short, the amendments convention process represents the states’ ultimate authority over the federal government. The states initiate the process, the states determine the reform agenda, and the states ratify any reform offered by the convention.

This country’s Founders expected the states to be vigilant and rein in the federal government when it oversteps its constitutional limits. The Constitution provides a path for the states to reassert their intended role with an amendments convention to safely address the kind of challenges that the United States faces today.
