Residents of CD-05 Receiving Letters from Mitchell Paid for by Taxpayers

(Scottsdale, AZ) Showing once again that he has little regard for how taxpayer dollars are spent, Congressman Harry Mitchell is violating the spirit, if not the letter, of the law which prohibits franked mail from being sent within 90 days of the general election.

“Over the last week, we have received copies of letters sent by Congressman Mitchell’s Congressional office to residents who have never communicated with his office,” said Oliver Schwab

The letters tout what Congressman Mitchell believes are virtues of the nationalized healthcare bill Mitchell voted for and offer the recipients the opportunity to “receive email updates on how (Mitchell is) working on behalf of Arizona’s 5th Congressional District.”

“This gross abuse of taxpayers dollars to benefit Congressman Mitchell’s campaign chances needs to stop,” continued Schwab.

“It’s already been reported that Congressman Mitchell tripled the amount he spent on taxpayer funded mailers to AZ-05 residents in the spring of this year – an election year – and now we see that he is continuing to mail even more taxpayer funded communications within the 90 day window before the election, to residents who never asked for them or have ever even communicated with his office.”

Simple Steps to More Arizona Jobs

Good economic news in Arizona is hard to come by these days. The state unemployment rate has been at 9.6 percent for three months in a row. But on the positive side, the Wall Street Journal recently published an article worthy of a smile. It reported Amazon.com has signed the biggest lease, by square footage, in Arizona’s history. PayPal also recently leased an office building in Chandler. Both companies are expanding and creating jobs for Arizonans.

Why did these companies choose to expand to Arizona? Barry Broome, president of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, pointed out that key business costs such as unemployment insurance and workers compensation are lower here than in Los Angeles, a city currently with similar rents. That helps make Arizona more business – and job –friendly.

The lesson here is that costs matter. When it costs more to run a business, employers are less able to expand and hire new employees, and might even shrink their companies. That means fewer jobs for the rest of us.

Taxes and government regulations make it more expensive and difficult to run a business. So, if we really want to see more opportunity and jobs in Arizona, we have to cut taxes and minimize regulation. That’s the simple, unadulterated truth.

ObamaCare is Wrong for Arizona and Wrong for America – Federal Hearing Tuesday

PHOENIX – “Arizona has a long and proud history of fighting the Washington, D.C. elite’s insatiable appetite for bigger government at the cost of States’ rights.  The battle over the Affordable Care Act better known as “ObamaCare” is the latest round.  Once again, the feds have gone too far. 

“The cost of ObamaCare places unsustainable burdens on our federal government, our state government, and on American families.   Further, the scheme is based on the unconstitutional mandate that every American buy health insurance.  For these reasons, the State of Arizona, at my direction, has joined nineteen other states in challenging ObamaCare in federal court in the Northern District of Florida. 

“Shortly after the states filed their suit, President Obama directed his counsel at the Department of Justice to file a motion to dismiss the case.  The federal district court in Florida will hear arguments this Tuesday, September 14, on whether the states’ challenge to ObamaCare may move forward.  I have no doubt that Arizona and the other states will ultimately prevail in striking down the most oppressive provisions of ObamaCare.  The Act is simply unreasonable, unsustainable and unconstitutional.

“The costs of ObamaCare are indefensibly high and unsustainable.  The current federal budget deficit will exceed $1.3 trillion.  According to the Congressional Budget Office, the ten year deficit is another $6.2 trillion.  This is not the time for America to be expanding entitlement programs, and thereby shackling our country to ever expanding debt obligations.  Instead, the federal government should follow Arizona’s example and cut spending.  America needs a long-term plan that will balance our federal budget and bring stability to our economy.

“In addition to burdening the federal budget, the Act unconstitutionally imposes staggering new costs and obligations on the states.  It transforms Medicaid from a federal-state partnership to reimburse needy persons’ medical costs into a vast federally-mandated program to benefit millions of persons with incomes above the poverty line.  While the states previously had discretion to manage their programs consistent with the needs of their citizens – indeed, Arizona’s own Medicaid program, AHCCCS, is a model nationwide – the Act now limits state flexibility and turns the states into an administrative arm of the federal government.  It also compels the states to assume responsibility not only for cost reimbursement but for the provision of the healthcare services.  These changes will add more than $1 billion per year in costs to an already overstrained state budget. 

“ObamaCare also forces private insurance plans to expand coverage.  While some of these changes may seem fair on the surface, ultimately the costs of these changes are borne by families.  According to the Wall Street Journal, coverage changes demanded by ObamaCare could increase some premiums as much as 9 percent.  Many Arizonans have already been told by their employers to expect high increases in their insurance premiums that will dramatically impact their household budgets.

“Ultimately, the law is unconstitutional.  It represents an unprecedented intrusion on the sovereignty of the states and the freedom of their citizens.   Congress is using its authority under the Commerce Clause to require citizens to purchase health insurance or face a stiff penalty.   This overreaching application of the Commerce Clause cannot withstand constitutional scrutiny. 

“Congress’s commerce power extends to regulation of activities having a substantial relation to interstate commerce, but it may not be used to compel individuals to enter a marketplace.  Likewise, Congress’s power to tax does not authorize it to compel persons to buy specific insurance products.  By enacting ObamaCare, Congress has seized powers denied it under the Tenth Amendment, in violation of the Constitution’s federalist structure and individual rights under the Fifth and Ninth Amendments.

“ObamaCare is a key point upon which Attorney General Goddard and I differ.  I asked the Attorney General as the Arizona chief legal officer to join his colleagues in the other states in reviewing the constitutionality of the proposed law as it was making its way through Congress last year.  He said no.  Once it passed, I asked him to join the other states in challenging the law.  He said no.  In fact, Mr. Goddard recently argued that Arizona is “better off” with ObamaCare.  Realizing that Congress has crossed the constitutional line and Attorney General Goddard was going to do nothing to protect Arizona’s citizens, I called the Arizona Legislature into special session to remove his authority to speak for the state on this matter.  The Legislature, without pause, authorized me to join the multistate suit on behalf of the citizens of Arizona.

“In addition to ObamaCare’s constitutional deficiencies, citizens simply do not support the law’s mandate that they purchase insurance or incur federal penalties.  Just weeks ago Missouri voters rejected any federal mandate to purchase health insurance with the measure passing with more than 70 percent of the vote.  On November 2, 2010, Arizona citizens will vote on Proposition 106, which is similar to Missouri’s new law.  I support Proposition 106 and have every reason to believe that Arizona voters will overwhelmingly pass this measure and, when they do, a clear message will be sent to the president and Congress that this type of overreaching by the federal government will no longer be tolerated. 

“When these cases are ultimately decided in favor of the states on the merits, it will be a great day for the citizens who have the right to set their own health care policies and the states who have constitutionally guaranteed sovereignty to establish their own policies in the area of health care.”

DCCC steps back from AZ

The DCCC is dialing down their commitment to Arizona and to the 3 Amigos who are in very vulnerable districts in the state. Read more about their retreat in this Hotline story by Reid Wilson. The explanation given by the DCCC is strangely suspicious, mostly because it is false. They are pulling out of AZ 5 because the strength of Harry Mitchell’s campaign? The situation on the ground is the opposite. The most recent poll showed Mitchell down 6 points. The article also said the Democrats feel good about Giffords because she is ahead in the polling. Since when is 46-46 ahead?

The Republicans struck back today. The NRCC put up an ad in CD 1 and Schweikert and Kelly also went on the air with their own ads. Take a look at all 3 right here.

Rasmussen Reports: 75 percent of GOP voters say Republican elected officials are out of touch with the party base because they are too liberal.

To the left of center in the picture is a candidate who took advantage of political opportunity – not because she believed in the purpose – but because by so doing she could eliminate the field of her competitors and appear to be that which she may not be.

The mendacious senior senator to the right of the Governor is proof that if you carpet bomb your opponent with enough money, and create the biggest echo chamber you can overcome the need to allow the voters to look at your own sordid record .

And lastly, the newly unemployed politician on the right is proof again, that sometimes integrity and honesty can trump money and distortions when the voters are informed of their choices.  In this case, common sense indeed did march to victory.  [As for the individual to the right of the senator?  We have no idea why he is in this picture.]

A Political Party stand on the values expressed by its platform and let its case be made before the voters.  Values, not expediency should direct policy and lawmaking.

If you are a Republican, then be a REPUBLICAN.  If you are a Democrat, then be a DEMOCRAT.  Voters are tired of having a dimes worth of difference between the two parties.  They see through the veil of feigned differences on the surface to the sub-surface where both parties begin to look very much alike.

The New Left: Trained, Radical and Ready

Most voters have not heard of Progressive Majority, but they are training the far-left of politics and their candidates are plentiful here in Arizona.  With “liberal” no longer a positive label in politics, they now call themselves “progressives”, but the ideology remains the same – higher taxes, more spending, a larger government at every level, greater control over people’s lives, and liberal social policies.  Their stated goal is to not “let conservatives dominate the 2010 elections” and they have six candidates running in Arizona’s statewide and legislative contests.  These far-left candidates include Andrei Cherny (State Treasurer), Angela Cotera (LD12 House), Rae Waters (LD20 House), Pat Fleming (LD25 House), Cheryl Cage (LD30 Senate) and Andrea Dallesandro (LD30 House).  Each is committed to Progressive Majority’s liberal agenda, each supports the most radical elements of the Obama agenda like ObamaCare, Cap & Trade, Card Check, etc. and each has received training from the organization on policy and campaigning.  These candidates all refrain from mentioning Progressive Majority or its role in their campaigns, either on their websites or in their public appearances, likely because they recognize that being recruited and trained by hard-left out-of-state organizations won’t be well received by Arizona voters that they are trying to sell their “independence” to, but every Arizona voter needs to be aware that these groups and their candidates are alive and well right here in Arizona, and while they are not campaigning as hardcore liberals, that is exactly what they are.

Harry Mitchell posts signs illegally on fences

Avoids town halls and won’t post public schedule on website in order to avoid constituents

Harry Mitchell is now trying to get around David Schweikert’s overhanging signs exposing his record by attaching his signs instead illegally to fences. This violates city code ordinances. First he stole his opponents’ signs, now he is illegally posting his signs. What about the word illegal doesn’t this guy understand? And he hopes to get reelected?

He’s not listening to the voters of his district. Tea Partiers are following him around protesting but he avoids them. Politico recently ran an article on how the most vulnerable Democrat incumbent members of Congress are avoiding their constituents. Harry Mitchell has been conspicuously absent from town halls, and you can’t find a schedule for his public appearances anywhere on his official or campaign websites. He’s virtually insulated from the voters – there is no way to get through to him. Seems the only ones who can get through to him are Pelosi and Obama. He finds time to meet with them frequently instead of his own constituents.

Dem Outrage Over Green Candidates Wholly Hypocritical

The story may be considered already stale, and I believe Mike Broomhead covered most of what I’m about to say days ago, but the story remains in the news and I’m compelled to speak out. The Democrats have been crying like little girls for days now about Steve May recruiting Green candidates to siphon Democrat votes in the general. In fact, in their usual hyperbolic, forced parlance, they’re calling it fraud. My response: …so what, Democrats? You do it to Republicans all the time. This is a valid tactic and it’s been used for a very long time. Apparently, a judge just affirmed that there’s nothing illegal about their candidacies.

The Democrats are just crying because their tactics are being used against them. At least in terms of putting candidates on the ballot, we Republicans, should know their tactics well and we should use the same tactics against them mercilessly. While the Democrats are whining and crying to the courts, they use the same kind of tactics against Republicans all the time. The difference? We don’t engage in the beta male behavior of crying about it. We simply out the Republicans In Name Only (RINOs) and Democrats in Disguise (DIDs) and try to win elections. We don’t go running off crying to the courts, that’s for Democrats. We Republicans believe in achieving our goals through the legislative process.

Arizona has a set of laws that governs who can and can’t get on the ballot. I believe they’re all in Title 16. These Green candidates at issue here jumped through all the legal hoops to get on the ballot, but the Democrats don’t like the way the law worked, so they cry about it. They want an exception to the law to benefit them, and them alone. They believe they shouldn’t have to operate under the same laws as the rest of us, that they’re special and everything should be their way. They believe the rules they’re crying about should only work in their favor. Remember what Orwell wrote in Animal Farm, “some animals are more equal than others”?

Exactly how do the Democrats use the laws against the Republicans? Two ways. First, and this may not be a conscious, concerted effort, but Democrats that want to hold office realize that they live in a Republican district and then they change their voter registration and run as a Republican. If they’re smart, they’ll lie to the electorate about being a conservative just to get elected. There are plenty of examples in Arizona politics of this. Life-long Democrat Tom Horne changed his party registration before he ran for the state House years ago. Dean Martin flogged him for it. Horne, the stereotypical RINO, has since done everything in his power to SOUND like he’s a conservative since but his record shows otherwise. Unfortunately, if the old man can win the AG’s spot, he’ll be third in line to the Governor’s office. We’ve done it to ourselves to let such a moderate Republican get so high in the party, but it’s nothing new. Jane Hull was a moderate Governor too and Jan Brewer has less than a conservative record now after hiking your taxes and increasing spending with her line item vetoes. Most recently Democrat In Disguise Heather Carter won a Republican nomination to the House in LD 7.

It is possible to have a Republican register as a Democrat and run in a Democrat stronghold district, but few Republicans can stomach lying to the electorate like that whereas Democrats have no compunction about it. Also, Republicans tend to brand anyone registered as a Democrat as a liberal. It would take an immense amount of self-sacrifice to run as a Democrat, so, it’s not often done.

Second, in addition to the tactic of running a Democrat as a Republican, the Democrats often run one Democrat House candidate in a solidly Republican district. How does this work? Easy. The Democrats “one-shot” their candidate. For those who don’t understand, to one-shot, a Democrat walks into a voting booth, and, for example, once they get to the state House races, they intentionally undervote, casting only one vote for the Democrat candidate and they fail to cast their second vote in order to deny the Republicans additional votes. You see, if Democrats were to fully vote, then they would be padding the vote totals for the Republicans and ensuring their candidate would lose. The hope is that, by one-shotting, the Republican candidates will not get as many votes as the Democrat candidate and the Democrat wins a seat. Democrats can win when the voter registration is close or the Republicans put up a bad candidate or when voters also undervote because they don’t like a Republican candidate. It’s also possible for independents and PNDs to vote for the Democrat candidate to put them over the top as well. Also, if it’s a bad year for Republicans, because moderates have been in power betraying Republican principles and conservatives have determined to discipline the party, a Democrat also has a shot at winning. It’s one of the many reasons why I thrash the moderates on a daily basis, because I want Republicans to win elections and stay in the majority for the long term. There’s a couple of split districts like this: LD 5 (it has a very slim 2% Republican registration advantage), LD 11 (has a 12% Republican registration advantage, but it has a history of moderate leadership), LD 20 (has about a 10% registration advantage), and LD 26 (has about an 8% registration advantage).

Republicans actually do the exact same thing to the Democrats…and we should do it to them EVERY TIME, without fail. LD 23 would be a district with a Democrat registration advantage, but we have one Republican Representative in that District. We’re also sticking it to the Democrats in LD 16 with Mike Gular. Again, I’d like to remind all LD 16 voters to one-shot Mike. Please ONLY vote for Mike and NEVER vote for a Democrat in the House races. If Republicans cast ANY votes for a Democrat in the LD 16 House races, you’re assuring you have NO representation in the House for another 2 years. LDs 24 and 25 also have Democrat registration advantages and one Republican office-holder.

Also, while I’m no proponent of Clean Election, I want the system abolished, as long as the sham is in place, we Republicans should be running a full slate of candidates in all 30 districts, ESPECIALLY the Democrat strongholds. Why? To fritter away taxpayer money? No, to make the fat, lazy Democrats EARN their seats in the legislature and possibly take the seats away from them.

Another tactic that the Democrats love to use is non-partisan races. In Republican strongholds, we Republicans are dumb enough to agree to non-partisan contests so the Democrats can pull the wool over the electorate’s eyes and sneak Democrats into office. How else would we get horrid mayoral and city council office holders. Phil Gordon is a horrid mayor. Had we had partisan elections, Randy Pullen would have been our mayor. Randy did his best to make it clear that he was a Republican candidate. I voted for Pullen and despite my differences with him, I rue that he’s not mayor. In Democrat strongholds, like Tucson, the Dems want partisan elections so they can ensure that their majorities can control things. If I had my way, ALL elections would be partisan, even in the Democrat strongholds.

What’s also hypocritical about the Democrats’ tears, with all their high-minded talk about “democracy,” is that they have done their best to knock as many candidates off the ballot as they can this year. One would think that if they believed in democracy that they’d want as many candidates on the ballot as possible. Just remember, Democrats are hypocrites and liars. They’ll tell you one thing and do another. Same with moderate and liberal Republicans. You should also remember that we don’t live in a democracy. We live in a republic. Decisions aren’t made by the masses (except for ballot propositions and who our representatives are), they’re made by our chosen representatives. Our Founders hated and feared democracy as mob rule. Initially, we had a limited franchise because our Founders hated democracy. They also instituted a bi-cameral legislature to put further brakes on the passions of the mob. Same with state legislative election of U.S. Senators, six year terms for Senators and the Electoral College.

To sum up, the Democrats’ crying is hypocritical. They just want things their way and never you mind that they also employ deceptive practices during election cycles.

LD8 fails to file campaign reports, fined $2,740 so far

But leadership has plenty of time to schedule liberal speakers at LD meetings

As we approach elections for new district leadership, it is important to choose high quality dedicated people and hold your executive board accountable. A quick check shows LD8 for example, has failed to file their campaign finance reports for the 2010 election cycle, resulting in $2,740 in fines so far and growing each day by $50 ($25 for SOS and $25 for Maricopa County Elections). This executive board, rumored to have been put in place by former LD8 chairman Donna Reagan, has showcased left-leaning speakers at the meetings but hasn’t bothered with the mandated duties of their offices. It must be nice for this rich district to have $3000 to waste on unnecessary fines. Most other districts can’t afford this luxury, I know mine can’t.  Imagine the Republican advancement that could have been accomplished with this money.

As we approach the November executive board elections, pay attention to the candidates for office in your Republican committee. Check to make sure required reports are filed. Verify your district’s reporting obligations and follow-up on the web sites:

Arizona cities and towns must reclaim heritage of competitive outsourcing

What’s the big secret in Sandy Springs, Georgia? This town of 83,000 furnishes Cadillac-level services on a budget of $1,996 per person. Sandy Springs provides its residents deluxe amenities like a rapid-response center for citizen complaints about city services, live Internet viewing of photos taken by traffic enforcement cameras, and a tennis complex that features 24 lighted courts.

Sandy Springs offers all this on a per-person budget that is 20 percent less than Mesa, Arizona’s; and despite the current economy where 10 local governments in different states have filed for bankruptcy in the last year.

So what is Sandy Springs’ secret? Private management of city services. Sandy Springs has outsourced nearly every city service and department outside of police and fire to be managed by a private company, CH2M-HILL. This public-private partnership has proven stunningly efficient and effective at providing a high level of services to an affluent community, even in the face of a 12 percent drop in tax revenues over the past three years.

More important than tennis courts and traffic cams, the Sandy Springs model shows the way out for cities in Arizona that have painted themselves into a corner with excessive payroll and retirement benefit obligations—nearly half of the city’s workforce is privately employed.

Arizona cities should consider competitively outsourcing all of their non-public safety services, including city management itself. Arizona, after all, is the birthplace of large-scale competitive outsourcing in municipal services. Sandy Springs’ success invites Arizona cities to reclaim their heritage.

At the conclusion of the Declaration of Independence, they wrote, “And for the support of Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor.”  This declaration was a promise that would demand terrible sacrifice on the part of its signers.  Five of the signers were captured as traitors and tortured before they died.  Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.  Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary War, another had two sons captured.  Nine died from wounds or from the hardships of the war.

I want you to know how much reverence and love I have for this Constitutional Republic, this sacred document given to us by God, through our Founding Fathers that sought his help and inspiration as they forged this Constitutional Republic.
