Surprising average return rate of early ballots

No increase in Independents voting

According to Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell, who appeared on Horizon Tuesday night, there is no surge in voting reflected in early ballots. 235,000 had been sent in so far, which is about the same number the Recorder’s Office usually sees at this stage of a non-presidential primary election. Purcell said she was surprised considering the number of high-profile races and candidates and controversies. She expected a larger turnout and more interest. She said there is usually 17-22% turnout in a primary, and would not be surprised if this primary doesn’t even reach 22%.

This bodes well for conservative Republican candidates. Conservatives make up the base of the Republican Party and reliably turn out to vote. It is Independents who aren’t choosing to vote this year. They showed up en masse to vote for Obama in 2008, but seemed to have lost interest this year, even in Arizona where there are several contentious races. Prediction: Moderate Republican candidates will do poorly on Tuesday.

    That’s great news, it will certainly favor candidates like Bill Montgomery, Andrew Thomas, JD Hayworth, and David Schweikert. Molly Pitcher, who continues to deny she is Lisa James, will have no need to post on this site any longer if her RINO candidates are all defeated.

    travis-i can’t help but think how this relates to that jim ward article posted earlier this week where he claimed that he was the be-all-end-all-of-voting-knowledge. looks like he had no idea what he was talking about after all. those who were attacking the math were just playing politics, with no attention to reality.

    We do not need a RINO in District 6:

    Vote Jeff Smith on 8/24! Send Mr. Smith to Washington.

    Travis, I don’t think that Lisa James is Molly Pitcher and Ann as she has been accused of. Lisa James is Deputy Chief of Staff for John Shadegg and there is no way she could churn out that many posts and comments on top of a fulltime government job, she would have to be doing a lot of it on government time and I doubt she would jeopardize Shadegg like that.

    Who on this BLOG is the official that decides who is moderate, conservative or ultra right wing? By what criteria do they judge?

  6. ham sandwich says:

    This depends on the district and the party. There is at least one Congressional race that already has more Early Ballots cast so far than in the entire 2008 Primary. Purcell is talking overall, not in respect to party, and there are virtually no D primaries. CD3 was low until a massive number of ballots were processed yesterday. We probably won’t know the winner of that one until the Friday following the election.

    2005 CENSURE OF McCAIN BY ARIZONA REPUBLICAN ASSEMBLY

    WHEREAS, Senator John McCain is presently co-sponsoring, together with his Democrat soul-mate, Senator Teddy Kennedy, a Bill to Reform the Immigration Policy of the United States promoting amnesty for illegal aliens and for their U.S. employers, thus ignoring the opinions of his constituents expressed in numerous polls and personal pleas; and

    WHEREAS, Senator McCain deserted the ranks of the Republican Party and the Leadership of the U.S. Senate on the issue of limiting the filibuster of judicial nominations, some of which have been on-hold for several years, thus stalling the President’s agenda for judicial reform; and

    WHEREAS, Senator McCain led the Democrat Party in “reforming” campaign finance, providing for a clear usurpation of 1st Amendment free speech rights during the last 60 days of an election campaign, and leading to an orgy of spending in the 2004 elections;

    THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Arizona Republican Assembly (ARA) officially and publicly censures Senator John McCain for dereliction of his duties and responsibilities as a representative of the citizens of Arizona; and

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the ARA strongly urges State Republican Party Chairman, Matt Salmon, the Arizona State Republican Party and its County and Legislative District affiliates to officially and publicly express their displeasure with Senator McCain by means of a public censure; and

    BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that copies of this Resolution be sent to the Chairman of the State Republican Party, to all Republican County and Legislative District Chairman and be issued as a Press Release to the media.
