Grassroots Interviews with LD 7 House candidate Howard Sprague

Last night on Grassroots Interviews I interviewed Howard Sprague a House candidate in LD 7. There are seven people running for two House seats.

Largely, I agree with Howard Levine’s analysis of the LD 7 House candidates. I part with Howard on his analysis of David Burnell Smith. First, as I’ve said multiple times, Ray Barnes scores slightly to the left of Sanctuary Six Nancy Barto according to Goldwater and other conservative scoring organizations. David Smith scored considerably to the left of Ray. Mr. Smith has also been removed from office due to Clean Elections violations. Smith is, to say the least, a colorful character who claims he’s not going to engage in any “sign pollution.” If he’s not going to use one of the most visible means of campaigning, I’d like to know exactly what his campaign strategy is. Finally, Mr. Smith is one of only two candidates that stood me up on Grassroots Interviews without even a courtesy phone call or e-mail. For those reasons I have serious concerns about Mr. Smith holding office.

I had ONE concern with Howard Sprague before the interview: that he was touting having been Dean Martin’s campaign manager the first time Dean ran for the Senate in 2000. Howard was absentee. However, Howard gave me an answer I agreed with 100%: Dean didn’t need a campaign manager. Dean was just that astute of a campaigner. He new how to do his own bulk mail and could design his own mail pieces. Dean, a political newcomer at the time, defeated the RINO House member Tom Horne in that race. Too bad it wasn’t Horne’s political obituary for eternity.

During the interview, Howard’s support for Jim Waring for Congress in CD 3 made me uneasy since Waring is a McCain staffer and because of that past, he will be all too willing to help McCain if both should be elected. If you look at the Roundtable Politics show I just posted, I predicted that Jim would win the CD 3 race since he has long been considered a frontrunner, Waring has tirelessly been knocking on doors, and Quayle may suffer from his involvement with dirty.com. Be that as it may, I will not be voting for Waring since he is not the most conservative candidate in the race and with so many people in the race, a candidate needs fewer and fewer votes to win. Additionally, Jim refused to come on my show even after I clearly stated that I would be willing to change my schedule to accommodate him. I may be critical of Jim, but I have given EVERY candidate a chance to respond, uninterrupted, to any concerns I may have. I might have disclosed who I am voting for in the aforementioned Roundtable Politics episode. My choice has always been between Gorman and Crump. I worry about their ability to fundraise. While Crump apparently supported a tax increase for a road in California, Gorman has supported moderate candidates Tony Bouie (I do like Tony on a personal level and I truly do appreciate the fact that he came on the show and I do want to remain friends with him. Luckily, I’m not in LD 4 and don’t have to cast a vote in that race!) and Peggy Neely. In my opinion, conservative candidates should NEVER support moderates. Moderates are a poison that lead to minority status.

So, as a conservative that believes moderates are responsible for our minority status, I have to vote for who I believe is the most conservative candidate that has at least a snowball’s chance. Also, since no one will agree with any candidate 100%, you have to choose the least flawed candidates. As I state in this interview with Howard, as an individual, I am endorsing Howard Sprague and Mike Farrar for the two LD 7 House seats. I strongly urge all LD 7 voters to go to the polls and cast their two votes for Mike Farrar and Howard Sprague.

Crank up your volume. The sound quality on this recording is awful.

  1. Read Bull says:

Sam Crump was on the conservative side of the question for the road in California. The Sierra Club and other high powered liberals were on the opposite side from Crump.

Sam Crump is the only dependable conservative in the race for CD3. Also, he is the only CD3 candidate of 10 to endorse JD Hayworth over McAmnesty. Pamela Gorman is not principled enough to endorse against McCain – she’s just fine with his reelection.

Sam Crump is widely recognized as a true and dependable conservative. In this 10 way race, Crump has an excellent chance to win and deserves our vote.

  2. Read Bull says:

PS I was going to vote for Sprague until you informed me he supports McCain operative Waring.

  3. Marcus Kelley says:

    Read Bull,
It’s your choice as to who you vote for. As I said, the only real wart I could find with Howard Sprague is his support for Waring. Jim is a nice guy and he has been Howard’s Senator for a while. Howard is a long time PC and has a close relationship with Waring. I said conservatives should never support moderates and I stick to that. Yet with this being Howard’s only wart and the other candidates in LD 7 being unpalatable (except Mike Farrar who I support), I have to stick by my statement that Howard Sprague is one of the two best candidates in LD 7 for the House.

  4. Preview says:

D7 voters were robbed of their choice when an unelected board of idiots removed Smith from office for something like an accounting technicality involving a scale as small as a few thousand dollars. I’d re-elect him in a heartbeat because that’s the prerogative of the district. It’s the principle of the thing. We decide, not anyone else, who we elect. Not Clean Elections. Once you allow people to take your candidate away, the next step is them taking away your vote. Clean Elections assures us of Soviet-style elections. You can vote, but who is running is up to the State.

Smith has won before, so that gives him a leg up on some other people, no?

I am sorry he stood you up, that’s just rude.

  5. PC in LD6 says:

Do you have that quote that Pamela Gorman is just fine with McCain’s reelection? You must be privy to some secret information or you are just a typical Crump supporter that only has his support of JD to campaign on.

He’s not even really campaigning anymore and has no chance on Tues – don’t waste your vote.

    Vote for Pamela Gorman!

  6. CD3 Voter says:

Pamela Gorman regularly endorses McCain candidates, just look at Tony Bouie in 2008 for a recent example. Gorman endorsed big government Republican David Braswell this year. http://www.pachydermcoalition.com

Sam Crump is the solid conservative and voters who pay attention know that. Since the Primary brings out those who are paying close attention, I’m certain Crump will win and Gorman will be recongnized for the RINO endorsing squishy conservative she truly is.

  7. Double Decaf Latte says:

Preview – I need to set you straight on David Burnell Smith. He would probably be termed out of the House now had he just played by the rules. he didn’t he tried to cheat to win and got caught. He tried to say it was an accounting error….but anyone who clearly looked at his filing reports could see this “officer of the court” lied to the Clean Election Commission. Smith and his campaign consultant Constantine Quarard tried to cook the books and over spend his primary limits.

Having been one of the people who did the research and wrote the complaint I can tell you, it still makes me smile every time I hear the name of David Burnell Smith. We took the cheater down. He thought he was so smart and fortunately for the Arizona Taxpayers he was thrown out of office. Some people do not deserve to have the word Honorable in front of his or her name. David Burnell Smith is one of those people.

  8. Moon Valley Hippie says:

Wow, a whole lot of pent up venom from Mr. Latte there. Sadly, not a lot of truth. So you helped write up the complaint did you? Did you sign it using a pen name then too? You strike me as the kind of snake who does his best work from hiding. A number of left-wing groups and individuals worked hard to bring down Smith, and all on a matter that he himself brought to the attention of Clean Elections. You see, that’s the stupid part about your lie, because if Smith brought the problem to the attention of the Commission, they wouldn’t have needed your so-called complaint. Not sure why the grudge against his consultant, who wasn’t accused of anything in any of it, but I guess while you’re smearing one you might as well smear them all? Of course, being the genius who helped construct this masterpiece, don’t you find it odd that you don’t even know how to spell the consultant’s name? I mean, you got the first name wrong and the last name wrong. Slither away friend, slither away.

  9. Double Decaf Latte says:

Moon Valley – Before I slither away I wanted to say it wasn’t exactly an accounting error. Here is what actually happened to David Burnell Smith.

Following an investigation of Smith’s campaign expenditures, the Clean Elections Commission determined that Smith violated campaign finance rules by spending approximately seventeen percent more on his election than was permitted by law.

Under Arizona law, the penalty for a candidate participating in the Clean Elections program who overshoots the spending limits by more than 10 percent is removal from office.

That’s exactly what happened to David Burnell Smith in 2005. Smith overspent the limit by $6,000 during his 2004 Primary campaign and was subsequently expelled from office by a unanimous 5-0 vote of the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission.

  10. Elmer Bringleson says:

I moved here in 2006 and met Mr.Smith when he was running for election to his former seat. What a blow hard! You can see what Double Decaf mean when he said DBS had to “cheat to win” I can’t imagine sane person voting for him. Maybe he wasn’t as mad prior to being kicked out of office. He has the look of a shyster….that what we call attorneys like him back in North Dakota.
