Arizona Law Enforcement Overwhelmingly Supports Andrew Thomas For Attorney General

PHOENIX, ARIZONA.  AUGUST 16, 2010.  Liberals and elites may not like the approach Andrew Thomas used to reduce crime and illegal immigration throughout Maricopa County, but Arizona law enforcement, overwhelmingly, supports his bid to be the next Attorney General.
With just a week to go before Election Day, Thomas’ endorsement list now boasts a stunning number of Arizona’s highest profile law enforcement leaders.  Second Amendment and conservative voices are also flocking to Thomas.
“Cooperation with these and many other Arizona leaders is why we reduced crime and illegal immigration, and will do so if I’m elected Attorney General,” Thomas said.
Among those chiming in for Thomas are:  Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Yavapai County Sheriff Steve Waugh, Mohave County Sheriff Tom Sheahan, Graham County Sheriff P.J. Allred, Mohave County Attorney Matt Smith, Peoria Police Officers Association, Phoenix Law Enforcement Association and Arizona Police Association.
Former Arizona Attorney General and NRA President Bob Corbin has also weighed in to support Thomas, as has the NRA itself.  Other conservative leaders such as U.S. Congressman Trent Franks and former Congressman and anti-illegal immigration hawk Tom Tancredohave endorsed Thomas too.  Tancredo even withdrew his endorsement of Tom Horne to support Thomas.  Arizona Right to Life supports Thomas as well, who has repeatedly criticized Horne for his support of taxpayer-funded abortion policies while in the State Legislature.

“Elites and powerbrokers have fought me from the beginning as I tried to crack down on illegal immigration and implement innovative policies to keep criminals in jail longer.  But Arizona law enforcement knows what it takes, and I am proud they are standing with me,” Thomas said.

During Thomas’ time in office, crime rates plummeted.  The 19 percent drop is more than twice the national rate of decline, in despite of an 11 percent increase in the county’s population during that time.  The illegal immigrant population has dropped by anywhere from 18 percent (Dept. of Homeland Security estimate) to 30 percent (Center for Immigration Studies estimate). Like the fall in crime rates, this dramatic decline in illegal immigration is far greater than the average in the rest of the nation.

Thomas has a track record of successfully defending illegal immigration crackdowns in our courts, including his successful efforts to prosecute illegal immigrants for conspiring to violate the state’s human-smuggling law and to defend Prop 200′s voter ID requirements and the employer-sanctions law, which he defended along with the Attorney General’s Office.

If elected Attorney General Thomas has pledged to expand that office’s prosecutions of illegal immigrants under the state’s human smuggling laws. The office is not currently pursuing such prosecutions.

Thomas is married with four children.  He is a graduate of Harvard Law School.  Prior to serving as Maricopa County Attorney, Thomas served as an assistant attorney general for Arizona, deputy counsel and criminal justice policy advisor to the Governor, special assistant to the Director of the Arizona Department of Corrections, and a deputy county attorney.

Law enforcement support (including Sheriff Joe). The NRA. Arizona Right to Life. There is little doubt as to who is the REAL conservative in this race.

  2. 20/30 GOP says:

Who is the REAL conservative in the race? Our state is broke and Thomas wants to waste money on lawsuits and his taxpayer funded campaign.

  3. 20/30 GOP says:

….oh, and for more information on that, visit http://www.theandythomastruth.com

  4. How many of those endorsements were before the release of the grand jury records?

  5. Ann:

All of them, but I’m still trying to nail down endorsements vs “endorsements”.

  6. Ann-

To your question, how many of these leading law enforcement officials have withdrawn their endorsement of Thomas as a result of the RINO Rick Romley/Republic anti-Thomas smear? ZERO.

That’s because unlike RINO’s like yourself, real law enforcement knows a fabricated smear when they see it, that’s why they’re sticking with Andy.

As for withdrawn endorsements, let’s see, Tom Tancredo withdrew his endorsement of Horne when he found out Horne favors amnesty.

  7. Mr. Mustachio :{O says:

The NRA? Yes, they did indeed endorse Thomas, but without knowing his history. To quote Doubting Thomas:
    ======
The problem with Andrew Thomas is that he exerts a heavy hand against law abiding citizens to show inflated statistics on his prosecutions. Thomas routinely criticizes his opponents for not being conservative enough but to those of us who know Thomas and have seen the destruction he causes first hand, Thomas is little more than a dangerous zealot.

I must say I am surprised that Andrew Thomas received an endorsement from the NRA. He may have a flimsy pro-gun record but just try and show or use a gun of any type for a just cause in his jurisdiction and you will be facing jail time. My line of work has led me to know people that have been prosecuted by Andrew Thomas and forced to plead to felonies for simply showing or having a weapon in the open. The Thomas office calls that “brandishing” a weapon.

I have met several people who have stopped criminals in the act of committing felonies by firing a weapon who then were prosecuted and sent to jail. One person stopped vandalism and a break-in from occurring at their neighbor’s home, plead to shooting within the city limits and was sent to jail. Another person I know actually stopped a kidnapping by firing a gun but was then forced to plead to a felony and was sent to jail. The Thomas office called that “shooting into a structure”. In each of these cases there was no victim but the Andrew Thomas office declared Maricopa County the victim.

I don’t know who the NRA meant to endorse, but I think they were duped into supporting Thomas. Gun owner’s rights ARE NOT PROTECTED under an Andrew Thomas administration. Gun owners protecting their families, property and others should not be prosecuted like common criminals. Thomas touts a 94% conviction rate and 200,000 felony cases. What good is Andrew Thomas’ conviction record if it means ANY of the people being prosecuted are average good citizens with families, jobs, who own real property, who pay their taxes and who find it necessary to opt for jail time by pleading to felony charges rather than taking a chance in court and being sent to prison?

Don’t vote for Andrew Thomas. You might be next.

(And no, that is not one of my screen names, I did not post that, though I have re-posted it once before. Just to get ahead of any more accusations.)

  8. I love it when Mr. Harvard Law School complains about the Elites.

  9. Ah, Mustachio shows his colors. Lots of his friends firing weapons during felonies. Got caught, had priors, did time. Yep, that’s some real junk to put on display for the anti-Thomas peeps.

  10. Mr. Mustachio :{O says:

Preview, you idiot, the weapon firing WAS the felony.

  11. That’s what I said.

You said “I have met several people who have stopped criminals in the act of committing felonies by firing a weapon who then were prosecuted and sent to jail.”

    Who was firing?

  12. Tucson Vice says:

Not gonna matter much once he is disbarred.

  13. Tucson Vice says:

    Hey Sarah,

Does the FBI count as “real law enforcement?” because I think they will have something to say about all this…

  14. Mr. Moustachio,

If you repeat a lie enough times, maybe people will start believing it. Nice strategy but anyone who has paid attention to the Thomas administration knows it’s not true that he was unfair to gun owners defending themselves from crimes. The AZ Citizens Defense League has also endorsed him because he paid attention to how those kinds of incidents were handled, unlike his predecessor Romley who actually was anti-gun and prosecuted everything under the sun to the max that involved a gun. You sound like a disgruntled individual who got in trouble with the law and is now trying to smear the prosecutor to make yourself feel better. You’re barking up the wrong tree there. Reputable gun owners around town like the AZCDL will vouch for Thomas’s careful attention in this area. Why don’t you stop smearing him because it’s making you look stupid and ignorant.

  15. Tucson Vice,

Show us the evidence that Thomas is under investigation by the FBI. That’s right, you can’t because there isn’t any. It’s a lie made up by the media and his opponents which they get away with since the FBI doesn’t confirm nor deny investigations, and since the FBI is investigating Arpaio for “racial profiling” it sounds plausible. That’s the best argument Thomas’s opponents can come up with and it’s false.

  16. Tucson Vice says:

    Roger,

Really, really great moment you had there. KPHO in Phx reported the story on March 5th:

    http://www.kpho.com/news/22752542/detail.html

As did the Arizona Republic and AZcentral.com:

    http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/03/05/20100305fbi-expands-joe-arpaio-probe-to-county-attorney.html

I guess you’ll probably claim that these are liberal news outlets being fed liberal lies by liberal sources who are in cahoots with a liberal judiciary and a liberal bar association.

When you think about it, though, doesn’t it seem like the only time they really refuse to confirm or deny anything is when they aren’t yet ready/willing to confirm something? I mean, when is the last time that fabricated stories, made up lies and completely unfounded rumors about investigations that don’t exist were answered by the FBI with the phrase “I’m sorry but we can neither confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation to determine if indeed Barrack Obama robbed a bank and escaped in a hot air balloon on his 32nd birthday (as an example)”?

You are right, though. The FBI can’t SAY that this is happening. At this point, they are doing him a big, big favor. Their refusal to confirm the investigation seems to be the only thing keeping his campaign alive.

    That’s what I said.

You said “I have met several people who have stopped criminals in the act of committing felonies by firing a weapon who then were prosecuted and sent to jail.”

    Who was firing?
    ===
Ah, good point, that sentence is a little vague due to syntax. The people who fired the weapon stopping the crime were prosecuted by Thomas (firing into a building, within city limits, etc) and those who were stopped had no charges.

    Sorry for the misunderstanding.

  18. Mr. Mustachio :{O says:

“…anyone who has paid attention to the Thomas administration knows it’s not true that he was unfair to gun owners defending themselves from crimes.”
“Why don’t you stop smearing him because it’s making you look stupid and ignorant.”

Wow. You put those two together? Sir, I’m afraid you’re the one not paying attention. Thomas did indeed prosecute people for self-defense with a firearm. Saying that I’m lying will not change that.

I would love to enlighten you by providing transcripts of the specific cases, but I don’t have the money to buy the pricey transcripts. (and there is the justified fear of reprisal/revenge)

  19. DPS, statewide endorses Tom Horne.
The Arizona Republic, hands down, endorses Tom Horne.

WOOO-HOOOO TOM HORNE ALL THE WAY!

The AZ Dept. of Education is the only state agency not to have any layoffs either as far as I know.

I met a lady running for office this year, last week, who said (can’t disclose name nor office due to confidentiality) employees who worked for Andrew Thomas would ever vote for that shady man … including herself. He never even said “hi” to her at work and apparently his employees know how rotten, sinister, and evil he is.

You are a lying rotten man Andrew Thomas, and shame on your lies too Joe Arpaio. I will never vote for you again either, Joe, for as long as I live, and my friends now know you are a liar too putting out false commercials TWO YEARS BEFORE YOU RUN FOR SHERIFF lying saying Tom is for amnesty when you know he’s not.

You endorsed him when he was in the legislature and were viewed saying recently, ‘You gotta do what you gotta do.” That means lie? Shame on you!

You are a good-old-boy gone bad! And my DPS officer neighbor, co-worker, ex-brother-in-law, and nail technician, etc. were all sadly correct about you~

    Snakes attract snakes!

Tom’s humble, warm, honest, genius, and experience will serve the people of Arizona with pride, dignity, and wins in the courts!

He’s saving us millions with the Flores Case and the Ajo Schools!

There’s one cure for a histrionic pathological liar. Tom Horne!

Tom Horne has: executive, legislative, and judicial experience, has taught legal writing classes at ASU, wrote a law book, is a two-time Harvard Graduate and a part of the Mensa Society (genius!), and people absolutely LOVE him!

  20. New Times editor Jim Larkin, was arrested by the Sheriff’s office when his paper wrote a derogatory article about Andrew Thomas.

There was no evidence against this man, so he was let out of jail.

Just one example of the corruption that goes on with Andrew Thomas and Joe Arpaio.

It’s obvious both are scrambling … desparate to keep their little mini-regime in tact, but their front is just a facade … now exposed.

    Political liars at their worst!

Very sad as Arizona could really afford an honest Sheriff who was actually a hero for fighting illegal immigration. Liars never prosper.

Character is who you are when nobody’s looking.

  21. Jon Altmann says:

I think all this is making it very easy for the Democrats to take the AG’s seat in November.

  22. All of Law enforcement back Andy, why not us?

  23. Mr. Mustachio :{O says:

Why not us? Well, I prefer not to live in a police state where an attorney (county, state, etc) can run wild with power over the people.

New Times editor arrested, no charges.
Don Stapley (guilty or not) arrested in a parking lot after work, and THEN charges were filed. (this after the first 100-odd were dismissed in court)
A daycare worker to be put on death row despite the evidence supposed to convict showed the opposite.
Lying about your opponent’s positions on key issues.

Just a few examples of “why not us”.
