David Schweikert Ignores 65 Percent of CD5 Voters

Dear CD 5 voter,

In a sweeping example of arrogance that has characterized his latest and third  Congressional campaign, David Schweikert told the Arizona Capitol Times that the Vote Jim Wardprimary election is “essentially over” in Congressional District 5, ignoring roughly 65% of the citizens in the district who have yet to cast their votes.

As you may remember, David Schweikert has lost in CD5 twice before and lost last cycle to Harry Mitchell by a twenty point swing.  He bases his claim on having  an “insurmountable lead” in the race. Obviously, he is using this as an excuse for his sudden reduction in his campaign expenditures.

I find it stunning and insulting that David would effectively tell so many of you who haven’t yet cast your ballot that your vote doesn’t matter.

This is a good indicator of how poorly Daivd Schweikert listens to constituents, and a good indicator that he realizes he’s headed for his third straight loss in this district.

Your votes matter to me and to the district as a whole and I would be honored to have your support. I promise to be attentive to your concerns and to work to restore America to the greatness it once had.  Please remember to cast your ballot whether you vote by mail or at your polling place on August 24.

Sincerely,

Jim Ward

2 years ago we didn’t even have a tea party. a lot has changed. with my humble respect johnny, this is an entirely different ball game from 2008. our country is in a very different position, as are we as citizens in relation to that government. i left my senate ballot bland, but i’m voting for mr. schweikert in CD5 because i know i won’t have buyers remorse. he is what he says he is, not because i have any personal knowledge, but because that’s been his record without any additional spin.

put differently, if i wanted a lobbyists, i’d go with ms. bitter smith; if i wanted a advertising goon, i’d go with mr. ward. but i want a solid numbers guy and someone who isn’t afraid to take his own party to task. that’s why my vote is for mr. schweikert.

  2. Annie Hoyle says:

Can’t wait until next week! Go vote!!! Go David, Go!!!

  3. Frank says:

ms. hoyle – from my calculations after just speaking with election services, we are already there well past 70% of the ballots out of the hands of the voters. mr. ward’s piece above is not only off in the numbers, but a gross demonstration of ‘need to be relevant.’ i saw what you wrote earlier, and am entertained. all the mail i received from mr. ward was about david too. i haven’t heard mr. ward say 1 positive thing. he’s just attacking other candidates in the mail, in emails, and on the radio. my wife is an ardent bitter smith supporter. i support schweikert. we have 2 bumper stickers on our car. we canceled each others votes out i guess. but the nay sayers on this blog, and the petty attacks are just humorous in the end. we will all need to buck up and tagteam against mr. mitchell who has been mia from our district for too long.

“for God, for country, and for CD5.”

    frank

  4. Gabby Hayes says:

    Otasour,

As Frank says, it is a whole new world out there and what was past is new again. The time is right for David Schweikert and he has the courage and know how to take back our country.
To Quote Bob Dylan “For the times they are a changin’”

  5. otasan says:

Gabby, I think you (and others here) are overestimating the effect of the national mood.

The voters of CD-5 rejected David Schweikert, explicitly, two years ago, not some other generic Republican.

He’s still the same guy. They will reject him again.

  6. Frank says:

otasan, who do you support for this seat? or do you just lob critiques? if you do, that’s fine. i’m just curious?

  7. Get a clue says:

    Frank –

“From your calculations…”? If you just spoke to the county elections department, why are you calculating a percentage at all? They will tell you what the percentage is. For you to throw out some nonsense calculation is ridiculous. Rings familiar with the misleading numbers Schweikert is trying to pass off on the voters. Wouldn’t be surprised if you were with his campaign… everyone else that posts here is.

“For CD5, vote ANYONE but Schweikert!”

  8. Gabby Hayes says:

Ok, if I vote anyone but Schweikert I get: A lobbyist, a liberal carpetbagger, a bankrupt doctor, another lawyer(Obama’s a lawyer), or a criminal.

    I am voting Schweikert..

  9. Frank says:

get a clue—-why you are so quick to attack folks posting their rightful comments is beyond me. is it necessary to personally attack my blog post and try to call me some conspiracist? what is it that you are looking for in a candidate – - and describe that candidate please. also please walk me through what misleading numbers are? if anyone here sounds like a campaign hack, it’s you! these numbers are publicly available. what are you hiding from? the truth? –reminds me of the old line that liberal Dan Rather said to Ronald Reagan, are you running from something? seriously, to all the folks on here who want to attack a candidate… just look at their records (they either have a record we can trust, or they have no record AT ALL). this back and forth is probably a waste of everyone’s time!

  10. otasan says:

Frank – I support Jim Ward, but I really support Anyone but Schweikert.

And I’m not the same person as Get a Clue, we just have the same opinion.

  11. otasan says:

Gabby, no need to vote for Schweikert. He’s already won, remember?

    CALLING ALL SCHWEIKERT SUPPORTERS:
No need to vote! He’s already won!!!

but if you do vote for Schweikert, you get to vote for a two-time CD5 loser!

BTW, is your opinion of Jim Ward as a “liberal carpetbagger” based on anything besides what you’ve read online?

  12. Gabby Hayes says:

    Otasan,

My own research…I read his web site and said where has he been for 25 years? So I looked up the county records and found he bought his house in Dec. 08 Listened to his positions on immigration on your tube and his econ. policy on you tube his own words – immersion and fair trade. Hence liberal carpetbagger. Did the same for all the candidates.

    I decided to vote David.

  13. Frank says:

otasan and get a clue—sorry to confuse you both. my impression of jim ward being a liberal carpetbagger is founded on the fact that he told me to go to his website when he had no clue what the 14th amendment was, i looked up his voter turnout and he’s never voted in a republican primary, much less generals, and word from the state party is that he shopped around for the right district to run in. it sounds like he picked the wrong district. i’ve also heard mr. ward tell different groups different things all around the district, from Mesa to PV. to me, that’s more of the same with rep. mitchell. i also find it entertaining that he only started contributing to republican causes the month he moved from california to arizona TO RUN FOR CONGRESS. yes – i do a lot of research on the computer. i’ve canceled my newspaper and magazine subscriptions… and i actually only found sonoran alliance this year but am quite fond of checking it now. i read a lot online, and i suggest jim ward learn his website instead of telling would-be interested potential-supporters to go to his website instead of refusing to answer basic questions about amnesty.

  14. otasan says:

Frank – I don’t believe that the GOP CD-5 candidates would vote that differently when they get to Washington.

You may find minor differences, but generally, they would vote the same way.

I support Jim Ward. I do so because:

    1) I think he can actually win the general. I don’t think David can.

    2) If Jim makes it to Washington, I think he’ll actually get something done. Nothing I’ve seen from David (and I’ve spent a lot of time with him) leads me to believe he’d be effective.

He doesn’t work well with others.

David Schweikert represents the worst traits of our elected politicians- he has a giant ego, he’s arrogant, and he’s unlikable.

  15. Realize says:

This race is already over. Schweikert won it over a week ago. That is a fact.

  16. Gabby Hayes says:

It ain’t over til its over, and we still need every possible vote cast to show Harry the big margin he is going to lose by. VOTE VOTE VOTE…….

  17. Serious Sally says:

    Otasan,

David doesn’t play well with others – We don’t need a go along in DC that’s what Harry does.
David is arrogant? Has a giant ego? is unlikable? I do not find him arrogant – but I did find Jim Ward arrogant when I disagreed with him. Giant Ego uh Jim Ward and His Hollywood friends…
What is left…unlikable ..I like David, many people do.
    Vote for David….

  18. otasan says:

    So…

If this alleged conversation with Randy Pullen happened, then why did Pullen tell Jim Ward to move to CD-5?

I mean, David declared himself a candidate right when he lost to Mitchell by 10 points in 2008.

So Pullen knew that David was running. And we all know that David is the most conservative conservative to ever grace the face of the Earth…

So why did Pullen tell Ward to move to CD-5?

Can one of you Schweikert-bots tell me?

And +5 bonus points if you can avoid the urge to insult me personally or use the term ‘RINO’.

  19. otasan says:

Sally- Aren’t you listening? David has ALREADY WON. No need to vote for him.

Stay home. Don’t vote. Schweikert has it in the bag!

  20. Annie Hoyle says:

I like David a lot! Let me get this straight, you are calling David arrogant and upset that he is claiming he already thinks he has won the primary… is that all you’ve got? Even if that were true, THAT is why you are asking people not to vote for him. This country has fallen apart, unemployment is through the roof, we are stuck with a national debt that can never be repaid and you are seriously asking me to NOT vote for David because he may have a big ego?! Have you seen what this awesome man has done for our state? David knows the constitution better than most people know the Pledge of Allegiance. He is devoted to our Country and to the great State of Arizona. (David’s cowboy boots are actually worn on the bottom)!

    Vote for David!!!

  21. Frank says:

    gone RINO hunting.

    be back tomorrow

  22. otasan says:

Oh. David has cowboy boots. Why didn’t you say so before?

I’m sold. I guess I’ll vote for David after all.

  23. Anna Johnson says:

2008 a Republican could not win because of the media frenzy. This is 2010 and we are taking back our country. David is the best man for the job and can certainly…WILL certainly win not only the primary but the general election as well.
Go David. At least he is promoting himself and what he will do in District 5 not just knocking the other candidates like Ward and Salvino are doing. Their tactics turned me off to them. Don’t tell me bad things about other people, tell me what you will do for our district. This is the best thing about Schweikert. He tells you what he will do.

  24. Arizona Ranger says:

Jim “The Carpetbagger” Ward: no experience, failed businessman, probable plant by opposing forces (McCain vs. Shadegg), no idea of what he “would do in congress”, and a very desparate guy. Did I miss anything here?

David Schwiekert: experienced in government (Former State Treasurer), very successfull business man, ethical, conservative, LONG TIME resident, very well connected, and determined to beat Mitchell.
Not perfect but easily rates a 9.9/10!!!

David is not conceited but candidly commented on where he saw the votes as of just recently. If he felt that the primary was essentially over (and he won!), it is nothing more than being correct to state the remaining votes do not significantly change anything. Do not underestimate his intelligence-he is a very smart and careful person. And never forget one really, really big point:
HE is a real Conservative. Unlike the other two pseudo-Republicans!!
David gets my vote now and again when he runs against Mitchell. We need to put our differences behind us after the primary and back which ever Republican wins. The real goal is to retire Mitchell and take back Congress!

  25. otasan says:

Yeah. I love how everyone is pretending that David hasn’t sent out any hit pieces or attacked other candidates this time around.

He fired the first shots on February 4, 2010 with a nasty piece entitled “Carpetbagger Jim Ward’s Inability to Get His Facts Straight Shows Voters Once Again Just How Unqualified He is to Serve Arizona”

It was posted on this site for a while, then it was removed.

From that point forward he’s been mostly using others to do his dirty work.

He certainly has the “anonymous blogger” constituency locked up.

When David sends out a nasty robocall or hit piece, you don’t see it here or on the other anonymous blogs.

You can find it on the AZDem website though.

In 2008 David lost because he was David, and the voters rejected him – not some generic GOP face.

Obama didn’t win CD-5 by 10 points- Harry Mitchell did.

The Democrats know how to beat David. They will do it again.

  26. Frank says:

otasin–i’m back from RINO hunting. i caught 3 total squishes on the other side of the river this evening. and i feel great.

question–why the hate? it’s almost like bitter grapes. come clean, are you actually jim ward? why don’t you go back to those AZDem websites. i can’t believe how mean spirited you sounds. it’s like you’re ready for a fight with the man, not the principles.

my advice sir or madam, whichever you are, is that you stand on policy positions not personal attacks. hate david? agree or disagree, you always know where he stands. what of his policy and record, not his personality, is that to which you object? or is it all personal for you? if that’s the case, you sound like one of those morons that voted for obama?

  27. Annie Hoyle says:

    Otasan,
I think others understood the boot reference. Why so angry?

  28. John Millbury says:

Let’s try simple math. 48,255 votes in the 2008 Republican primary election. Nearly 40k votes in at county. This is a non-presidential race cycle… Game over.

I was pleased to run into a couple Ward supporters this week and hear the words “Jim understands that the race is over and has encouraged us to support David going into November.”

I’m not sure why some of his people here didn’t get the memo, but obviously Jim is a smart enough guy to admit defeat and hopes to retain a few shreds of decency if he want a shot a doing anything worth-while in Maricopa in the future. I would think the rest of you (even if only a handful) would heed Jim’s directive and stop the game-play (no pun intended Mr. Lucas).

  29. Common Sense says:

Not so fast, John. I believe what you heard were folks saying Jim understands the intent is to beat Mitchell in the general and we all need to get behind the winner.

That is a far cry from the giving up the ghost tact you are asserting.

Ms. Hoyle it is admirable that you support your brother, David. Unfortunately, his lifelong quest to Congress has been evident. Not that such a dream is a bad thing, it just doesn’t mean as much to the rest of us as it would to you. Watching your brother strive for higher office, caring for him as you should, it is understandable that you would take a strong negative stance against his opponent.

Jim Ward will win the primary, he will beat Harry Mitchell. That is if enough voters understand David and Susan are old retreads that the voters have rejected and will do so again. The visceral vitriol spewed by both the Schweikert and Bitter-Smith campaigns resonates strongly in the minds of general election voters.

The origination of all the ugliness has not been lost in the murk and mire.

In a district with such a huge number of “recent converts”, also called new residents, taking the approach that their ideas are worthless will backfire.

The only chance we have of unseating Mitchell is to vote for Jim Ward. A vote for anyone else is a shoe-in victory for Mitchell.

  30. Frank says:

    good morning sonorans…

i think it’s high time we take what “common sense” has said to heart and stand against anyone who has devoted more than 10 months of their life to the public good.

but wait, jim running for congress doesn’t even serve the public good, only himself. i’ll forget about that point and move on.

schweikert team, lets just abandon the mission. i think its time we join the far left and start the founding fathers and anyone out there who has devoted more than 10 months of their life to the public good. otasan, johnny, and every other ward mole who is writing in while on government time is probably right.

even though i already voted for david, from here on out, i support jim ward, because he’s the opportunist winner we need. he can beat congressman mitchell because he said he could beat schweikert. and because jim ward is such a successful businessman and wasn’t ousted from his job, i believe him. jim’s sloppy campaign spending, inconsistent messaging, and waffling on just about every issue i care about makes him the leader i trust. he’ll be just like every other scum bag in office out there. that’s what we need. more losers in washington.

i value that fact that jim ward has never voted in a republican primary, he just moved here from san francisco to buy my vote, and has no record of supporting a single conservative cause before deciding he wanted to be mr. congressman. that makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, but more importantly, it’s the kind of record i trust to represent me and not sell out on the values i hold dear.

vote for jim ward. he’s the opportunist we need in congress to sell us out as soon as the lobbyists shake him down! he has no idea what he’s doing, will hire all of congressman shadegg’s staff (who are illegally working on jim ward’s campaign and posting all of these ridiculous comments here), and will be more of the TARP voting same. move over cd3, shadegg’s staff wants to work for congressman jim ward.

good grief people. do they really think we are that stupid. pay attention! this isn’t about jim ward or david schweikert, this is about electing someone to office who will get the job done, and who we can trust – - a record we can trust. susan and david are the only two candidates with records. jim ward could have had a record, but he was too busy building shoot-em-up violent video games for kids to learn real family values out of his fancy office in california to lend a hand doing anything to help our country…

  31. Serious Sally says:

    Common Sense, Johnny & Otasan:

What I have found is common sense is not so common any more. I do not need a father figure Otasan and I question the maturity of anyone called Johnny.

Harry Mitchell and the DCCC will be a tough opponent. Jim Ward will not beat Harry Mitchell. He had to do his hit piece twice thanks to a critique by Espresso Pundit. This neophyte thinks he can take on the big boys in his first ever campaign. He is dreaming, which makes sense since he came from the Magic of Hollywood. Everything Jim sends out splashes David’s name all over the place. A good consultant would tell you , don’t do that. So, Jim, thanks for all the free advertising for my candidate. Makes me wonder about his expertise in anything, since that was his field of work at Lucas arts, marketing and advertising.

Back to Harry vs. Jim. The DCCC is already here and they will try to take down whoever wins this primary ( David) It is going to be vicious and ugly from the dems. side. Jim Ward is inept and whiney about what has gone on so far? Jim it ain’t gonna get any better. I want a tough fighter in this race to represent me, and a tough fighter in Washington to fight for me there.

Sorry guys, David Schweikert is tough, honest and the right man for the job.

  32. John Millbury says:

The question still remains, will Jim show some maturity tomorrow night the the Rocks event and bow out gracefully as he has told his supporters he will do? They have received the message from him that he understands the race is over and that he will not win… but will he put grace before pride tomorrow night?

I would like to give Jim and the other candidates the benefit of the doubt but I really think Susan is the only one of the bunch with enough class to bow out with style and respect.

  33. Common Sense says:

OK, back to some COMMON SENSE…Jim Ward has bought and paid for air time. You buy that stuff weekly. If it were his intention to bow out, why spend the money? This is a desperate ploy by the Schweikert faithful to dimish his potential with voters in hopes of gaining some for David.

Polls have been done on this race and there is no reason for Ward to go anywhere but to the printer for more general election material explaining why Mitchell must go and he is the guy to do it!

He ain’t gonna do it. Nope, he will be there on Thursday, he will bring his message of conservative leadership in the face of liberal expansion and show everyone why he is going to win the primary and the general!

  34. Frank says:

i hope mr. ward doesn’t forget to tell everyone that he supports fair trade too. that’s just a gem. truly, commendable. it’s like he forgot he was a republican for a second… or three seconds, on his OWN WEBSITE you moron. right out of the words of nancy pelosi “what we need is a fair trade model to replace free trade.” ARE YOU NUTS!!!

long live che guevera, bobby kennedy, and the jim ward fair traders!

  35. johnny says:

    Serious sally,

If you read my posts you would see I don’t support ward… So I am not sure why I am lumped in with these guys. I also fully admit I assume schweikert is the nominee all I am saying is schweikert is going to have a REALLY tough fight against mitchell when mitchell has over 1 mil cash on hand 5 times that od david and is already getting DCCC money…

I am just not sold on david …

  36. Frank says:

correction Mitchell has only $800k on hand… check out the most recents

johnny, i made that mistake too… i’m sorry for lumping you in with the wardens

  37. Kyle says:

(Frank – For goodness sake, take a breather.)

The Schweikert campaign is clearly scared.

Why else would they call the race locked up when they know full well that only 1/3 of the early ballots have been returned?

He is clearly concerned that the more votes cast, the more likely he is to lose.

Schweikert has every reason to be scared, the voters will reject him this time, like they did in the 2008 general.

  38. Frank's wife says:

kyle, leave frank alone. he’s a good man.

  39. Virus Shifton says:

STOP! Enough is enough! This jackassery and nitwittery has gone far enough!

It is time to stick to the facts about each of the candidates. It is time to present clear and concise reasons why or why not to vote for any of the candidates in the CD5 congressional race!

I am tired of hearing about why I shouldn’t vote for a candidate. You all are doing Mitchell’s oppositional research for his campaign team.

Why in the world should I support any one of these candidates? Give me facts. Give me reasons.

The time for all of this asshollery to stop is now!

  40. Serious Sally says:

    Sorry Johnny….

  41. ham sandwich says:

It is time to rally around David. He’s going to need our help to defend him from the Democrat attacks on his earmarks while he was Treasurer.

  42. Bobby Baby says:

If we do not come together as Republicans after the Primary, Harry will win. Whoever wins the Primary will have my support. Will the rest of you make that commitment?

  43. John Millbury says:

Of course!!!! We all want the same thing (I hope) to retire Harry Mitchell and take back our state & country. Please people, take a deep breath and understand what is at stake. It’s time to put everything else aside and truly focus on winning in November!!!

That doesn’t just mean voting for the Rep. candidate either; You NEED to get out and make calls, help send mailers, make more calls and send more mailers. And if by some strange circumstance we run out of calls to make and mailers to send… by God MAKE MORE CALLS!!!

    Then make some more calls.

Our lives get put on hold for the next 2&1/2 months…

Regardless of who you support now, please make the commitment to unseat that unscrupulous bastard no matter what the cost, commitment or otherwise.

In my humble opinion, David Schweikert will be sworn in come January… IF we work together in full force.
