More praise for Romley–from Kyrsten Sinema

Rick Romley has run a campaign for the Republican nomination for County Attorney that seems more appropriate for someone seeking the DEMOCRAT nomination for County Attorney.

Now as he engages in an 11th hour, transparently political attack on Sheriff Arpaio and former County Attorney Andrew Thomas, about the only people cheering him are Democrats.  Once again Kyrsten Sinema applauds Romley.  Our faithful readers will remember that Sinema also praised Romley for his amnesty plan for illegal aliens.

Here’s a little bit of friendly advice to Mr. R: when you’re running in a Republican primary against a competitive opponent who is clearly trying to get to the right of you (which Romley has made a far too easy task), it’s probably not good when the most far left political figure in the state is singing your praises.

Convicted Con Artist Hired, Promoted by Tom Horne

Oversees Information Technology for Students throughout Arizona
PHOENIX, ARIZONA. AUGUST 12, 2010. A convicted con artist is in charge of information technology at the Arizona Department of Education, Attorney General candidate Andrew Thomas announced today.
Tom Horne hired Donald Houde despite his criminal past.  Houde is a convicted con man who was sentenced to eight years in prison for stealing $1.7 million from his employer, Mile Hi Cablevision in Denver.
An Attorney General is supposed to prosecute criminals, not hire them; but Tom Horne apparently didn’t get the memo.
In 2005 Horne appointed Donald Houde Chief Information Officer for the State Department of Education. In 2007 Horne promoted him, adding Deputy Associate Superintendent to his title.  He earns more than $140,000 a year.
In hiring and promoting Houde, Horne has put a confessed thief in charge of sensitive information involving teachers and students across the state.
As CIO, Houde is responsible for the security of student records, background information on teachers including Social Security numbers, and department financial records.
Horne knows of Houde’s criminal record, yet he insists on keeping him on the payroll despite his shocking past.
Houde has also apparently padded his resume, citing a college degree and a technology patent that don’t exist. To make matters worse, Houde cited these credentials in a 2007 federal grant application for the state of Arizona.  This may cost Arizona taxpayers because grants with false information can be rescinded.
Houde’s six-figure salary apparently isn’t enough for him nor does it seem to take up all of his time.  Houde also owns a consulting company in Scottsdale which published at least one report for the Arizona Department of Education.
Houde isn’t the only high level employee with a questionable past at the Department of Education.  Horne hired Carmen Chenal even though her license to practice law was suspended at the time.
Attending the press conference with Thomas were Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu and leaders of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association, which have endorsed Thomas for Attorney General.
Thomas stated, “Birds of a feather flock together.  Not only is Tom Horne a confessed con artist, he has hired a convicted felon who embezzled $1.7 million to oversee sensitive information on students and teachers in Arizona.”
A summary of all Houde background information can be found here.
Horne was banned for life by the Securities and Exchange Commission from selling securities after he defrauded his clients.  Horne also illegally and repeatedly failed to disclose his bankruptcy when he filled out paperwork to incorporate his law firm with the Arizona Corporation Commission.
During Thomas’ time in office, crime rates plummeted.  The 19 percent drop is more than twice the national rate of decline, in despite of an 11 percent increase in the county’s population during that time.  The illegal immigrant population has dropped by anywhere from 18 percent (Dept. of Homeland Security estimate) to 30 percent (Center for Immigration Studies estimate). Like the fall in crime rates, this dramatic decline in illegal immigration is far greater than the average in the rest of the nation.
Thomas has a track record of successfully defending illegal immigration crackdowns in our courts, including his successful efforts to prosecute illegal immigrants for conspiring to violate the state’s human-smuggling law and to defend Prop 200′s voter ID requirements and the employer-sanctions law, which he defended along with the Attorney General’s Office.
If elected Attorney General Thomas has pledged to expand that office’s prosecutions of illegal immigrants under the state’s human smuggling laws. The office is not currently pursuing such prosecutions.
Thomas is married with four children.  He is a graduate of Harvard Law School.  Prior to serving as Maricopa County Attorney, Thomas served as an assistant attorney general for Arizona, deputy counsel and criminal justice policy advisor to the Governor, special assistant to the Director of the Arizona Department of Corrections, and a deputy county attorney.

It Was Only a Matter of Time….kabloom!

It was never a matter of “if”, but more of “in how many ways” can the JD campaign implode?  In the vernacular of pop culture…JD has jumped the shark.  Ironic does not come close to describe the comparison of JD and the originator of the phrase.

The classic TV show Happy Days had hit the skids, with few of the remaining characters left it needed to ramp up its ratings and tried a series of 3 “Hollywood” segments.  The cocky, cool, and full of himself character…The Fonz… makes a jump on water skis over a shark.  Fonzie “jumped the shark”.  The scene was so cartoonish that it has become the quintessential phrase for identifying the event when an endeavor has met its downturn and certain demise.

No one can deny JD’s pandering ways.  His ability to triangulate and move a topic from the original point to the place he wants it to be, in order to make his desired point…no matter how unrelated…is no big news.  Anyone who listened to his radio show for more than 5 minutes could tell you that.  But he has been in overdrive!

Just when did the JD effort begin to fall apart, come unhinged, or “jump the shark”?

The suspicion of imminent implosion was when JD mouthpiece Rachel Alexander described the announcement of Luke Air Force Base’s preferential position in the F-35 placement as “pork”.   Trying to desperately move the title of pork-lover, big spender from her guy to McCain, the campaign actually hoped voters would think keeping Luke open was a bad thing.  A $2 Billion annual infusion into our state’s economy, a national defense necessity, an international security effort…pork?  Desperate doesn’t even come close to describing such a statement.  I know Rachel thinks herself an “intellectual” but does she think everyone else is just plain stupid?

The determined intention to go off the deep end was made clear when JD attacked the Bush family in a radio interview saying:

The sad fact about the Bush family is this stubborn notion of noblesse oblige, combined with verbal dyslexia.” JD Hayworth

Are you kidding?  JD cannot build himself up enough; the incessant desire to huff and puff is beyond his own control.  Foghorn Leghorn would be proud.

But JD’s answer to a question this week at a tea party meeting could easily be the point of lift-off.

JD actually suggested that Obama is a better president than McCain would have been.

By now, people have started to shake their heads and are giving the eye roll.   The fall-out from this statement is when propulsion definitely was achieved.  In yet another of many episodes where JD refuses to accept responsibility for his own words and actions, he calls in to Barry Markson, the “sitting-in for Barry Young” host.  It is while Markson is taking a call from a listener who is expressing his opinion about JD’s Obama love-fest when JD can’t take it anymore…..

Listen for yourself as he dodges the issue and hangs up rather than answer.

Never one to disappoint in the unbelievable category, full height was reached when Hayworth surrogate “American-Post Gazette” decided to go for broke and sent out a diatribe that can best be described by a comment made on the post… “insanely spurious”.

The disgusting piece of propaganda used the sexual orientation of a non-candidate to draw a very jagged line to the support of gay marriage.  Apparently, to JD and his supporters being gay must be antithetical to being a conservative. Such a notion is the equal to this ridiculous statement by Harry Reid, “I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican…”

I do not support gay marriage.  This has nothing to do with gay marriage.  It has nothing to do with Prop 8 in California.  It is simply an ugly, low-life and determined effort to move the needle on a desperate campaign.

So, in keeping with the JD mentality…are all gay folks to remain unemployed or is it they just can’t work for anyone with an “R” after their name?  Someone better send that memo to DC because there are more than a few openly gay staffers in some very high positions.

Does JD Hayworth really believe being gay is tantamount to being unqualified or is it disqualified?  If he is adhering to such a position, someone better check out the EEOC guidelines on hiring because a lawsuit cannot be far behind with such a policy.  Now that the originating email has made its way around the net…I can just imagine the scrutiny his hiring practices would bring.

Between the anti-Bush statement, the gay-bashing rhetoric, and Obama-love one must wonder, just what is it this guy is thinking?  Clearly, he isn’t.

I fully expect the attack comments from folks invoking the Christian right will fly ….so let me save some of you some time.  I am a born-again, spirit-filled Christian. I oppose gay marriage and believe the Bible is very clear on the matter.  I will make no apologies to anyone on that issue.  The Bible is also very clear on a few other things…like the “love your neighbor” and “whatever you do for the least of them” sort of stuff.  If given a choice, I will choose to walk in love not hate.

Horne unable to suppress Arpaio’s free speech

Horne’s first lawsuit – before he’s even Attorney General – shot down; evidence it was phony

by Casey Newton – Aug. 12, 2010
The Arizona Republic

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge has rejected Tom Horne’s request for a temporary restraining order against ads for Sheriff Joe Arpaio that criticize Horne despite the fact he’s not running against the sheriff.

Horne, a Republican candidate for attorney general, filed a complaint Monday asserting that an ad for Arpaio’s re-election campaign is a thinly disguised advocacy ad for other candidates who support Arpaio’s policies.

Arpaio isn’t up for re-election until 2012, while Horne is in a primary against Arpaio ally Andrew Thomas.

In his ruling, Judge John Buttrick said there was no legal remedy for the issue Horne described. Horne’s point is “moot,” according to the ruling.

“This court will not read a remedy into the election statutes that the Legislature presumably intentionally decided to omit,” Buttrick said in his ruling.

Horne said he is frustrated that his only recourse against the ad would be an administrative procedure that could result in a maximum fine of $1,000. Horne criticized the ad, which accuses him of supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Chad Willems, Arpaio’s campaign manager, said the campaign was always confident that the ads were legal.

He compared them to the Arpaio TV spots targeting interim County Attorney Rick Romley.

The Maricopa County Elections Department announced last week that the office is investigating the ads criticizing Romley to determine whether the advertisements were an “independent expenditure” that had a “downstream beneficiary,” which could violate state law.

The Greenlee County Attorney’s Office cleared Arpaio’s ads criticizing Romley, but Maricopa County took the issue up again after a complaint was filed about the ads.

Willems said he hoped Buttrick’s ruling could settle both issues.

“From the campaign’s perspective, we’re obviously delighted that the judge found in our favor,” Willems said. “We think that the principle of free speech would apply to whatever Mr. Romley is alleging here as well.”

Republic reporter JJ Hensley contributed to this article.

Brian Miller Announces Suspension of Campaign

For Immediate Release: August 11, 2010

(Tucson, Arizona) Brian Miller announced at an event this evening that he will be suspending his campaign for Congressional District 8. Brian Miller, a Constitutional conservative Republican, ran his campaign on a platform of limited government, individual freedom, and peace through strength.

Brian Miller released this statement: “Though we have run a tremendously successful grassroots campaign on a limited budget, at this point I do not have the funds to continue this race. My competitors have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising – and it is impossible for me to make up that gap. We are looking to the future, and I believe the only candidate who can beat Gabrielle Giffords in November is Jonathan Paton.

“I want to thank all of my supporters and volunteers from the bottom of my heart. This has not been as easy decision for me, but I think it is best. I will not give up the fight for the Constitution and freedom, because this is an ongoing battle – for me, my family, and all Americans.”
