Now the truth comes out: McCain tried to blackmail Hayworth into supporting amnesty

Phoenix, AZ (AUGUST 9) – Sen. John McCain tried to blackmail then-Congressman J.D. Hayworth in 2005 into supporting his illegal alien amnesty legislation, by threatening to raise unfounded allegations of a relationship between the Congressman and lobbyist Jack Abramoff, records show.

“FYI: We’ve been inundated with press requests to comment on your boss’s abrahamoff [sic], sky box, etc. situation. We’ve refused them. I think you should be prepared for that to change,” wrote McCain’s chief of staff and confidant Mark Salter to a Hayworth aide on May 12, 2005 at 6:19 p.m.

Salter’s threat included these words:

“As you can guess, much consternation here over your boss’s quick attack on a bill we’ve been working on for months, in the most arduous discussions, and, we think, managed to arrive at a very good product with a broad constituency behind it, not to mention three of your boss’ delegation members. Obviously the attack occurred before anyone has even seen the bill. At best, it was discourteous, and we took it quite personally.”

Following the threat, a committee chaired by McCain launched an investigation into Abramoff and his alleged connections to members of Congress. While McCain continues in the current campaign to try to tie Abramoff to Hayworth, there was no mention of Hayworth in the committee proceedings or the final report Chairman McCain issued on the matter.

“Now, in desperation, McCain is doing exactly what he said he would do – lie to try to win,” Hayworth said. “His latest ad is demonstrably false, but this is what we have come to expect from McCain. He plays mean, under handed political games of blackmail behind the scenes while he tries to convince the voters of America and Arizona he is ‘Mr.Clean.’”

Hayworth said he was reluctant to bring up this “ugly matter” during this campaign.

“But I have no choice,” he said. “At almost every campaign stop, during every interview and now in the latest lying television ads, Sen. McCain tries again and again to misrepresent the facts. While he attacks me for something he knows is false, he refuses to return the $1.1 million he took from a convicted felon who is serving a 50-year prison sentence for running a ponzi scheme.”

Hayworth has called for John McCain to return the “bundled” contributions collected by Scott Rothstein for McCain’s failed presidential campaign.

Salter’s original email is below.

JD Hayworth punished McCain in the debates. You could tell there was some personal animus involved.

    Now you know why.

JD Hayworth faced McCain and just defeated him. Steamrolled right over him.

After the first debate, McCain resembled a spoiled brat who just had his stolen candy ripped away from him by an adult. He looked like a furious bully with a pouty face.

    It was…well, priceless!

The debates alone made the whole Hayworth vs. McCain campaign worth it.

John McCain will never stop fighting for illegal aliens to have amnesty and the wonderful life of free food, housing, medical, dental and schooling that goes along with it.

McCain’s goal is the exaltation and of illegal, criminal aliens over hard-working Americans. For this lofty goal he will tirelessly labor because the East Coast Establishment wants it.

    His term is “regularize” them.

They’ll deny it’s amnesty saying that the illegals must do this and must do that to “earn” their citizenship.

But you and I know, the government isn’t going to do a “dang” thing about enforcing any of it.

They’ll just make sure the 20 million newly documented Americans can bring in 2-4 family members and collapse our already bankrupt system. It’s just the new order of things.

    Thanks John McCain!

Thanks for King Maobama and his pampered, elite wife, Queen Michelle and her bevy of servants that cater to her every whim!

Those $350,000+ dollar European vacations are wonderful excursions in opulence as Americans go bankrupt by the millions and families are torn apart by the new jobless recovery poverty.

All hail King Maobama and his ice cream eating Queen wife that McCain gave us because he wouldn’t fight for the presidency.

A vote for McCain is a vote for nihilism!

    Ya, right…
    You people are pathetic.

  3. Michael Holliday says:

I wish JD Hayworth had a bunch of that Rothstein/McCain money…say one million bucks!

Then, on VH Night (Victory Hayworth Night), we could spend the million bucks on a 500 ft. giant pinata of McCain and pummel it till candy treats came out in a massive quantity, so that even all those thousands of illegal aliens McCain supports would get some treats before being tossed out of the country.

That’s what kind of a nice person I am.

I would even like the illegal alien criminals to have one night of fiesta feast, pummeling a 500 ft. John McCain pinata and celebrating JD Hayworth’s Senate victory with some tasty candy treats!

    One million bucks worth!

  4. Jane 001 says:

Evidence hits you squarely between the eye that your candidate lies, cheats, and blackmails. Although, somehow the constituents are pathetic. Classic!

  5. VSB says:

    Desperation….paid for by JD Hayworth…LOL!

  6. DSW says:

If I were McCain I sure would be angry enough to spend another $2 Million attacking my opponent after he told me and the rest of Arizona that the American people rejected me twice.

  7. DSW says:

    VSB,

I believe the more accurate definition of “desperation” would be that of spending $17 MILLION against an opponent who you claim is not credible.

Well lets look at it this way, so far McCain has spent in excess of 17 million bux trying to defeat JD. He put in a lackey named Deakin to try and drain votes from JD. For 1 minute do you think I can believe them polls telling me JD is 20 points behind? McCain is cruising for a bruising come election night from his protagonist who stopped his Amnesty bill. Kick Butt JD. We know Deakin is a failed Candidate now, even most of his supporters realize the man has not taken care of his family, but has elected to run a failed campaign waiting for the biog payoff from McNasty.

Where’s the blackmail? That’s politics boys. Support me or I’ll talk bad about you…am I missing something or isn’t that politics y’all? Hhhm you Hayworth fans oughtta quit crying, take off your female undergarments and sanitary napkins, and get in the fight. You do know how to fight don’t you? Or is all you know how to do whine and cry about how mean Senator McCain is to your guy? I guess that’s what being in a war teaches you, and Hayworth and his fans can’t know this, when you’re in a fight if you’re going to hit a man you better take him out. J.D. you ain’t impressing me.

  12. Joe says:

How does it feel to be grasping at straws?

    Hayworth is finished.

  13. Ann says:

That is not blackmail! A statement in an email of a government system between two offices…no secret there!

JD is a cry baby. Grow a set buddy and stand on your own. Blaming everyone else for your own failures is pathetic.

  14. 57States says:

Not that I was to thrilled with the prospect of a McCain presidency – but too bad McCain used kid gloves against Obama and has turned barracuda against Hayworth.

  15. Michael Holliday says:

Had McCain and his overpaid staff of flunky consultants fought for the presidency, instead of campaigning for Maobama and telling America what a great family man Obamao was, McCain would now be president.

But, such is the result of living in a fantasy world surrounded by political advisers that parasitically suck you dry of millions of dollars for helping you lose the big race. Not a good deal at all.

Even though John McCain is about to feel the wrath of the American voter and lose his Senate seat, I think the one of the goals of the Hayworth campaign should be to get McCain and his team of flunky analysts to dump at least $25 million campaign dollars on trying to defeat JD, since this will help the local economy even more than the $17 million he’s already spent.

In the end, John McDang will go down in defeat simply because, like his team during race against Maobama, he has failed to come to grips with reality: the outraged American population does not want his amnesty plan for giving away the store to criminal, illegal aliens. Period.

John McCain and his defunct, highly-paid consultants will be liberated and free at last to fish for crawdads in Boggy Creek with Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, since they will be retired proper by the JD Hayworth juggernaut.

Out of mercy and compassion, I’d like to set up a few decompression booths for the feinting and collapsing McCain supporters during election night.

These booths will help ease their transition back to consciousness and freshen them up a bit for the big event of the night: the celebratory Pinata Party where everyone gets to whap at a 500 ft. John McCain Pinata for tasty treats, candy, snack cakes and whatever happens to tumble out in joie de vivre and merriment!

    Viva la Hayworth revolucion!

    Viva la Hayworth revolucion!

    Viva la Hayworth revolucion!

  16. Stephen Kohut says:

    CharlotteW,

As evidenced by all these blogs, there is very little differnece between McCain and JD. This is what 40 years in office gets you. An ongoing and childish food fight about deals, pork, corruption,… I’m walking my second precinct and people are very warm to Jim’s canidacy. While they don’t like McCain many cannot stand JD. That is the same sentiment that the polls find. This will be an intersting race to the finish. My questions for all those that have picked JD as their one trick pony is what are you going to do on 8/25 after the loss?

  17. Mark Roberts says:

McCain’s kept men and women, they’re bought and paid for, at a very high price. They will say anyting at the ordered time, for the right price. What is the going rate for an hour, Ann, Jane01, Ouch, VSB?

The same for Deakin, only much more expensive. McCain didn’t mind spending $637,000 of gov’t money to get him to run, NOT to win mind you. He just wanted a pretend conservative to draw votes off from JD.

McCain is THE MOST CORRUPT POLITICIAN IN WASHINGTON! MOVE OVER RANGEL, WATERS, PELOSI AND REID!!!

  18. Mark Roberts says:

From the evidence of these blogs, there’s no difference between supporters of McCain or Deakin. Oh, they’re the same people.

Neither can tell the truth!! they lack integrity and prove with their words what kind of character they have, lying about everything.

    _____

Yawn…you make me sleepy with your words of silliness!

I’ve composed the following poem for Vetran:

MCCAIN, THE POUTY AND RUFFLED SPOILED BRAT:

    JD Hayworth destroyed
McCain in the debates, it was
    great!
    Pouty and childish, McCain
stomped off the stage in a rage,
like like Stompy the Bunny that was just
run over by a Mac truck, or a bird
with scruffy ruffled feathers. It was funny!

The weather’s great when McCain is retired and fired from his Senate seat for cheating the American people of their right to sovereignty. See McCain hopping mad!

Good luck winning the race when
McCain just had his political face disgraced and displaced by the truth dawning like the youth of space of time and eternity in vibrant golden sun rays across a silver horizon of hope of liberation from the illegal alien hordes, while we dance in bon vivant and have tasty candy treats galore and build the 500 ft. John McDang Pinata to be beaten to a pulp
    fiction ending.

JD will not allow them to debase our citizenship with flim-flammery and illegal alien amnesty chicanery. We shall prevail
and sail them back from whence thy hordes
of invaders have cometh! Yea! verily
I say unto thee, McCain would not fight
    but chose, instead, for them
    amnesty! A McShamnesty!

I sit at Tucky Fried Chicky, munching
some tasty wings and singing my song along with the happy, patriotic Americans
of yesteryear as we prepare to vote in Hayworth who will send the illegal hordes
back across the raging river Styx
to take our jobs and social
    services no more!

Lend me your ear, McCain! Thee I implore!

Run, rabbit, run! Keep hopping around in
    circles, inviting more criminal illegal
aliens into your country, as your ears flap in the wind, to destroy the
fabric of society and collapse the USA
into a pool of debt and despair.

Your good friend Vetran will be there to share in the great John McCain 500 ft. pinata smack down party fiesta feast celebration! The crowd of celebrants
will dance and sing and frolic in
the Sonoran sun in victory and triumphant
jubilation while singing songs of liberation from the illegal alien hordes.

The nectar of victory is sweet, the sour
grapes of John McCain’s defeat are like
    smelly feet.

Eat, eat of the fruits of despair and defeat and take a back seat to the high-speed race car driver known as JD “whatever it takes” Hayworth. Prepare for the journey of liberation and celebration and hope.

John McCain, his soft, Angora bunny ears are droopy. But the freedom of retirement will allow him to ponder, down yonder, his loss to a superior candidate, JD Hayworth.

See McCain run. See McCain pouty like
the chubby kid from that Willy Wonka
and the Chocolate Factory movie that
turned into a giant blueberry and floated
    away in angst!

Soon Vetran and McCain will be history, her story, our story…

  20. Lynn says:

    Mark-
That is the same old story, when you don’t like what the person says, automatically assume they are paid staffers. That in itself gets old.

  21. CharlotteW says:

Steven, Steven, Steven, whatever does that mean? In other words don’t vote for JD, vote for Deakin to let McCain win? You tired supporters of Deakin may get what you want, a win for McCain, and a wind fall of cash for Deakin. You damn fools, too blind to see what Deakin has gotten himself involved in. Well that is unless you are actually a McCain supproter stroking Deakin’s ego.

  22. Carlist says:

    Lynn:

To bolster Mark, one doesn’t see too many volunteers around John McCain

Volunteers are usually animated by principles.

Over a twenty eight year period, McCain has aptly demonstrated that he not only lacks, but mocks them!

  23. Stephen Kohut says:

    CharlotteW,

Jim supporters are not tired in the least nor are we fools. We understand our choices very well and choose not to vote for either of the two incumbants, their 40 years of baggage and their unending broken promises. Enough is enough. The vitrol by JD’s more rapid supporters is enough to drive any sane undecided vote away and directly reflects his upside down favorable/unfavorable ratings in the polls. The Alinskyesque ads by McCain against JD and his once every 6 years dash to the right accomplish the same for McCain and that is reflected in his soft support in the polls and neutral to slightly negative favorable/unfavorable ratings. Jim’s supports say no to both these undesirable choices. Thank you, no.

  24. Just more evidence that when it comes to McCain and Hayworth attacking each other, they’re both right.

Neither one gave back the money.

  25. Stephen Kohut says:

I just finished downloading the FEC brochure for filing complaints, in this case for the 16 “TP endorsements” of JD and when I go out to JD’s website guess what. All the endorsemetns are gone and the endorsement link is deactivated. The good news is is that that info is available on many other sites. Should be intersting in what the FEC makes of this.

  26. wanumba says:

Stephen, will all due respect, that’s a big reminder that McCain accomplished ONE big game-changing achievement in his career: McCain-Fiengold Campaign Finance Reform: making SURE the incumbent always has the money advantage.

One of the most comprehensive shut down’s of national political speech and political activity for the short-term political protection of ONE guy: McCain.

  27. Steven Robinson says:

When Jim Deakin appears at a campaign event, he starts his speech with his Mel Gibsonesque voice yelling “Freedom!” Mr. Kohut in his rabid hatred of anyone opposing his viewpoint yells: SHUT UP!!!

Furthermore the pseudo-intellectual resorts to the Deakin/McCain tactic of lying!! Well, Mr Kohut, here’s the link to the listing on the website!! I love the joint campaigns of John McDeakin and Jim Decain! They lie in harmony!!

    http://www.jdforsenate.com/news/2010/08/02/tea-parties-endorse-jd-hayworth-us-senate

Oh yes, Mr. Stephen “Casa Grande School Board candidate who will teach you how to lie” Kohut, Here’s the video link of the event: http://www.jdforsenate.com/news/2010/08/02/video-hayworth-press-conference

Would you like to retract your statement?

And are you still telling everyone that Deakin has re-instated his mortgage? Where’s the proof?

  28. Steven Robinson says:

Yes, wanumba, Stephen Kohut endorses McCain’s platform, tactics and morals. Anyone who disagrees or challenges Jim Decain (Deakin for those with a Pima County public education) ethics, fitness or sanity!

Fortunately, McCain-Feingold was gutted by the Supreme Court in January 2010. Perhaps if Mr. Kohut bothered to read the law he would realize how foolish and empty his threats are, he might quiet down… NOT!!

  29. Mark Roberts says:

hey michael bailey, Have you considered the fact that mccain would not even consider attacking his ally deakin? And Hayworth does not stoop to the lowlife tactics of the deakin or mccain campaigns? JD has much more integrity and class than that!

  30. Jane 001 says:

I don’t think the Hayworth campaign is guilty of what Stephen Kohut insinuates. I was just at the Hayworth site and easily found yet another the link to his endorsements:

    http://www.jdforsenate.com/endorsements

  31. Smith says:

The truth according to Hayworth is never the truth according to facts…

  32. Mark Roberts says:

Thank you for pointing that out Jane 001!

  33. KL says:

For those asking what us JD supporters plan on doing 08/25 we plan on setting our sights on Glassman and having JD defeat him in the general.

  34. Stephen Kohut says:

For all that JD claims 16 “Tea Party” endorsements what has not been forthcoming is the data on those organizations showing that they have a legal right to endorse under FEC and IRS regulations. I, amongst many, have asked for the information showing that they have their 527 PACs in place to endorse. In addition I’ve challenged anyone to show me a single group that has a 527 PAC and runs its members organization under the for profit PAC. So for, there has been zip for a response.

I know where the links are on JD’s site. What is interesting is that after multiple failed attempts earlier today I went back in and it works now. Wonderful! Makes filling out the FEC complaint easier. It helps. The FEC provides very nice links, outlines and instructions for filing election law complaints. I need to complete my screen shot of JD’s site now that the link is back up as well as those of all the referenced organizations, print out the complaint and mail it out to the FEC. I should have done this earlier when but you can’t walk precincts and type at the same time. That’s what weekends are for. This won’t be handled by the FEC in time for the primary but it will clean up any issues that should never have happened in the first place.

  35. The Mole says:

Smith – remember your boy McCain is the one that said he would rather lie than lose.

  36. JPD says:

Hayworth’s Endorsement Smell Like a Red Herring:

  37. JPD says:

    I’m in Stephen.

  38. Michael Holliday says:

JPD is obsessed with the granularities and misses the Gestalt.

More evidence of a mediocre mind…

  39. wanumba says:

So, what’s the legality of McCain using presidential campaign funds for a Senate race? Haven’t heard any clarification as to the legality of it. Certainly the PROPRIETY of it shows McCain to be a arch manipulator.

Those funds were solicited to defeat a Democrat in a national campaign and are being used now to defeat a Republican in a state race. They were also intended by the donors to run an aggressive and sustained campaign, but time after time McCain refused to use them. Palin was told McCain didn’t see any worth to campaign in Michigan … not an effective use of limited funds … now we find out McCain is using MILLIONS of these SAME UNUSED funds as his senate warchest.

SO, did McCain run for POTUS to simply fund his senate campaign? Would explain his infuriatingly lackluster efforts and his open annoyance that Governor Palin was actually taking the campaign seriously.
