JD Hayworth Launches New Ad: “John McCain’s Amnesty”

JD Hayworth launched a new television advertisement statewide highlighting McCain’s long held support for amnesty for illegal aliens. As a U.S. Senator representing Arizona, JD Hayworth will implement border security measures to protect Arizonans and Americans because he believes that border security is national security.

Poll: CD-5 Republican Candidates

Please take a moment to vote in the Republican Primary Poll for Congressional District 5. This poll will close at midnight on July 31st.

More Democrats endorse Rick Romley

Democrats have been lining up behind temporary Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley in his race against conservative Republican Bill Montgomery.  As if Republicans needed any more reasons to dump Romley, today Romley garnered additional Democrat support in the form of Linda Valdez and the rest of her liberal colleagues on The Arizona Republic’s editorial board.

The Republic’s list of picks is lousy with RINO’s, from Romley to Tom Horne, Paulina Vasquez Morris to Susan Bitter Smith.

This is hardly surprising–when a left-wing newspaper gives advice to Republicans on who to pick in their primary, one would expect they would go with the most liberal candidates.

For that reason it’s hard to see this endorsement helping Romley or any of these others.  Republican primary voters pay a lot of attention and they’ve certainly sniffed the Republic out.  They’re unlikely to take their marching orders from the lefties at the Republic.

Bill Montgomery – “RINO” Hunter!

Bill Montgomery, Republican candidate for Maricopa County Attorney in Maricopa County, Arizona, goes hunting for the elusive “RINO” — Republican in Name Only — Rick Romley, who is his opponent in the August 24th primary election.

Grassroots Interviews with CD 7 Candidate Ruth McClung

Since I recently wrote about interviewing Mr. Wilson, I thought it was high time I posted my interview with Ruth McClung. She was an earlier interview. We broadcast the video but were unable to record it via the internet, so we recorded it on a camera. We got it archived shortly ago at Grassroots Interviews.

By all accounts, Ruth is the frontrunner in the CD 7 race. I wish her a lot of luck!

Grassroots Interviews with MCCC Board Member and Candidate Jerry Walker

Last night on Grassroots Interviews, I interviewed my client, Jerry Walker. He’s currently on the Maricopa County Community College Board and is running for re-election. It’s a non-partisan race, so his name will not appear on the ballot in the primary, but it will be on the November 2 general election ballot. There’s one seat the voters will be filling and Jerry has drawn a very liberal pro-tax and spend opponent.

Jerry would be a prime example of needing to retain an incumbent over a challenger because Jerry’s challenger is a liberal educrat that will protect the status quo. Jerry has opposed tax and tuition increases because he puts students first, then the taxpayers.

I heartily urge commenters to WATCH THE VIDEO first.

Ask John McCain for YOUR Money back!

This is great! Hat tip to Seeing Red Arizona for this post! (I’m going to repost it in entirety here on Sonoran Alliance) All credit to Seeing Red Arizona!

John McCain has been using money stockpiled from his failed 2008 presidential bid to barrage conservative senatorial candidate J.D. Hayworth with a relentless and malicious ad campaign.

If you donated to the lesser of two evils — the McCain over Obama campaign — you are entitled to request a refund.

Donations that were intended for use in one campaign were not meant by their contributors to be transferred to bashing J.D. Hayworth. Ask for a refund and send it where it makes a difference: to the campaign of J. D. Hayworth.  Time is short.

Early voting for this crucial primary election begins July 29, 2010. The actual election day is August 24.

“Career Politicians”

One of the memes of this election year is to invoke “career politician” evidently in the hopes of eliciting a pejorative, unthinking, even Pavlovian response.

Political skills and knowledge are important to have to be a successful politician, and those are gained, like in every other profession, by experience, education,  practice – and  failures.

Failure can work both ways – a person can be ruined by it, or rebuild themselves stronger by it. How many successful businesspeople have said, “I learned more about what not to do and what works by my failures. I took those and from them built a winning model.”  How an individual deals with failure tells much about his or her character, oftentimes more than a success reveals.

Some professions appear to be accepting of dilettantes or the inexperienced, but those who do not have the substance to improve or advance are soon left by the wayside in any profession. Most new businesses and endeavors in America fail. The dilettantes are wiped out quickly, while others pick up and start over, taking “fail” as an education better than any college classroom course could teach.

People routinely look for “career surgeons,” “career architects,” “career engineers.” Yet this season, we voters are frequently encouraged to ignore experience and skills in favor of complete neophytes in politics? It rarely works in any other field of endeavor, requiring many other often very artificially supporting factors, so why should we ignore common sense in making decisions about political representation?  Fresh faces should always be welcome, but they need to come with solid competencies which can translate well in some measure to the political field.

But lurching to the other extreme is nonsense, too. “Career politicians” should be held to the standards one expects of any other profession: honesty, professionalism, and respect for the clients. If a “career politician” develops a record of abusing the public trust, undisciplined with other people’s money, repeated promotion of personal priorities over public, then the “career politician” should be dumped as fast as any “career building contractor” would be who produces a shoddy product, any “career physician” who misdiagnoses, overcharges or puts his or her patients through unecessary hardship,  in favor of a professional who has the skills, the honesty and the discipline to get the job done correctly.

Like “leadership,” “Career Politician” is actually a neutral term. What’s critical is the nature of the PERSON , the quality and relevancy of the skills of the “career politician,” and how responsibly and effectively that person will use those skills and experience.

More of Moak pandering to the voters of CD3

Now this has gotten ridiculous!

Steve Moak is gonna stand at the border with his binoculars to PROTECT US???

Does anyone remember Mike Dukakis in the tank?

It’s time for these candidates to stop pandering in such absurd ways. Are we supposed to believe Moak has been standing at the border with his binoculars? Maybe there were some cool birds he was watching, either way, this is getting ridiculous.

Mr. Moak, CD 3 is NOT for sale.

Example of how NOT to write a campaign mailer

Carpetbagger Jim Ward, polling poorly due to moving to Arizona to run for office, resorts to desperate attack

The Hail Mary Falls Short

(from espresspundit.com)

I live in CD 5 and I received two pieces of mail yesterday that told me everything I need to know about who is winning the race to replace Harry Mitchell.  The Schweikert mailer was about Schweikert and the Jim Ward piece was about…Schweikert.

Jim Ward must have a poll that indicates he can’t catch David Schweikert without going negative.

Now don’t get me wrong.  I’m not against a good hit piece–in fact, I’ve written quite a few of them–but writing a good hit piece isn’t that easy–and when they go bad, they are very bad.  Ward’s piece is bad.

A bad hit piece is like watching a child who thinks he has learned to cuss.  He has the words right, but it’s so obvious that he doesn’t understand what he’s saying that instead of being shocked, everyone laughs.

Ward’s hit piece is actually good for a lot of laughs and when I read it, I thought, “my gosh, this could be a clinic on how to write a bad hit piece…”   Hmm, that’s actually not a bad idea.  So here’s a copy of the Ward hit piece and below it are my notes and suggestions–and a bit of well deserved mocking. (here’s the original version.)

Ward Panics

1.  The theme of the piece is that Jim Ward is an outsider and that Schweikert is a career politician.  Then lead quote is from…an incumbent Congressman.  Dude, that’s awesome.  I like John Shadegg, but he’s been in Congress for 16 years.  So Ward is telling me that he’s an outsider by showing me that he’s been endorsed Arizona’s longest-serving Republican Congressman?  Dude, pick a theme.

2.  This is a GREAT picture of Schweikert.  I should know, I took it.  I could give you some technical details of why it’s a great picture–I used actual film because it’s better for four-color process and has a richer tone.  I shot it at F2 in order to flatten the depth of field and make Schweikert stand out against the background–but that’s not the point. The point is that if you only look at this hit piece for 30-seconds, you can’t tell who it hits.  Seriously.  The picture of Schweikert is actually better than the picture of Ward.  Most voters look at a piece while walking from the mail box to the trash can and a significant number of voters  who don’t take the time to actually read this piece will think that Schweikert wins the comparison.

But the piece isn’t confusing just because the Schwiekert picture is better than the Ward picture, which brings me to point 3.

3.  All the “NO” labels are under Ward.  This is a classic mistake.  Voters read mail and want to know who to vote FOR…sure, you are telling them who to vote against, but they don’t understand that.  So the piece actually reads like a “No on Ward” piece.  The most logical reading of the first title for example ”NO on Ward because he’s a career politician.”

4.  Hit piece writers are often tempted to just make stuff up because it’s hard for the target to rebut, but in the age of blogs, people actually go back to the “sources” that the candidate sights.  Here, Ward continues his claim that the Wall Street Journal and Fox News “called him an anti-establishment outsider…”  This claim is simply untrue.  Read here for a complete debunking.

5.  Fuzzy Math.  Look, if you are going to use actual Math in a hit piece, it has to add up.  But more importantly, this bullet mentions that Schweikert ran against Harry Mitchell in 2008.  So what was Jim Ward doing in 2008?  Living in San Francisco.  That’s right.  Schweikert was living in CD 5 and running against Mitchell with Obama at the top of the ticket and Ward was living near Nancy Pelosi’s district.  Ward moved to Arizona to run for Congress and if you check out the documents, it looks like he hired his political consultant before he even registered to vote.  So he should probably avoid references to what Schweikert was doing in 2008.

6. After you have set the stage by lying about yourself, you are now ready to lie about your opponent.  But, again, you can’t make stuff up that’s OBVIOUSLY not true, or the readers will catch it.  So these bullets list Schweikert’s (rather impressive) resume and then claim he’s a “20-Year Career Politician.”  The problem is that the list only includes 7 years of elected office.

7.  Watch for passive voice.  “Residential and commercial property taxes increased on his watch.”  Does this say that Schweikert raised taxes?  Nope.  In fact, Schweikert was the TREASURER during this period and had no authority to increase or decrease taxes.  He simply collected the money.  Nice try though.

8.  Parallel Structure.  I circled this set of points because they are the only ones that are right.  Read the first word of each bullet…Repeal, Replace, Create.  That’s excellent.  They are all verbs and have a great flow.  Now read the rest of the bullets…the rest of them are like the bottom set ”Opposes, Will Reduce, Supports.”  This may seem like a minor point, but it confuses the reader and muddles the message.  That’s critical when a piece gets less than a minute of reading time.

9.  Look for pure fabrication.  Ward sites the spending increases from 1991 to 1995. Huh?  Schwiekert and I served together in the Legislature in the early 1990s when Symington was Governor.  With the exception of the current meltdown, the last period of fiscal austerity was from 1991 to 1995.  Schweikert was in House leadership during that period and was instrumental in keeping spending down.  So don’t site the most conservative period in the last 25 years as an example of big spending.

I also like the next bullet in this section “increased Maricopa County budget…”  Again, Schweikert was TREASURER he didn’t vote on budgets.

10.  Any lie that is worth saying is worth repeating–see point 4.

So why the panic?  Why did Ward decide to go negative with such an amateur, hastily contrived piece–three factors:  sobering poll numbers, limited cash on hand and high burn rate.

Sobering Poll Numbers.

I don’t have a copy of the poll, but the results of Ward’s internal polling are obvious.  You don’t see the other candidates mentioned in this piece and we are no longer seeing positive pieces about Ward.  When an candidate targets one member of the field with a negative piece, it means that the target has a comfortable lead and the clock is ticking.

Limited Cash on Hand

The Republic reported that Schweikert’s cash on hand is $434,000, while Ward comes in at $284,000 (contrast that to the millions he promised to spend when he moved here).

However, the numbers are actually even worse for Ward.  Contributors often give more than the Primary Limit and that money has to be earmarked for the General Election, or returned if the candidate loses the primary.  If you subtract out Ward’s earmarked money, his cash on hand drops to about $190,000 while Schweikert’s cash is still above $400,000.

Burn Rate

Cash only counts if it touches voters instead of going to consultants.  Ward spent $220,000 last quarter and has nothing to show for it but a few mailers and a lot of consulting fees.  Those consultants are going to want to be paid in the second quarter too, so if you subtract a $50,000 a month burn rate from the $191,000 in cash available for the primary you get…enough money to do one hit piece and a few feel good mailers.

So that was his shot.  The Hail Mary play comes short.  the crowd goes wild. Game over.  .

Republic still in the bag for Romley

Under pressure, the Republic’s Michael Kiefer has finally started covering the County Attorney race between conservative Bill Montgomery and RINO Rick Romley.

While the Republic is no longer ignoring the race, their “coverage” does not inspire a lot of confidence that the newspaper is committed to fairly representing the race to its readers.  In other words, they’re still in the bag for Romley.  Take this morning’s article about Bill Montgomery, let’s dissect it piece by piece.

Opening line: “Bill Montgomery’s biggest task in his bid for Maricopa County attorney may be to convince voters that he is not a clone of former County Attorney Andrew Thomas”

Huh?  Andrew Thomas has fans and detractors, but he was elected County Attorney twice, and polls show him as the favorite to be our next Attorney General.  Kiefer may not like him, but the voters appear to.  Bill Montgomery is not Andrew Thomas, but is this really the concern that Kiefer makes it out to be?

Kiefer is also taking pains to dull the significant differences between Romley and Montgomery on illegal immigration enforcement.  Another line from Kiefer:

“Romley has also pointed out problems in the highly contested new immigration law, Senate Bill 1070.”

Pointed out problems?  Romley called for Governor Brewer to veto SB 1070, and said it was “tearing our community apart.”

More Kiefer:

“Romley set more stringent standards in charging the people arrested in Arpaio’s crime sweeps.”

In reality, and as Arpaio and others have pointed out, Romley is creating artificial barriers that make prosecution impossible.  In layman’s terms, he’s refusing to enforce laws targetting illegal immigration, not “setting more stringent standards.”

Romley just isn’t a believer in a robust state effort to combat illegal immigration.  He didn’t do anything in the 16 years he was County Attorney before while the problem festered.  But instead of just saying he isn’t going to enforce the law, he puts up phony roadblocks on issues that were never a problem before.  It gets Romley to where he wants to be–no enforcement–while at least giving him some legal reason, albeit a phony one, to justify it.  And of course, being of the same mind, the paper covers for him.

Combined with their previous effort to ignore the race, the current coverage reveals the Republic’s bias.  But the message is getting through to the public–one candidate wants to do something at the local level about illegal immigration, and one candidate doesn’t.

Arizona Fraternal Order Of Police Defends Sheriff Paul Babeu After Attack by Hayworth

Arizona Fraternal Order Of Police

Press Release

July 22, 2010

Phoenix, Ariz – Sgt. John Ortolano, Arizona President of the Fraternal Order of Police today defended Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, who has been attacked by US Senate candidate JD Hayworth.  Hayworth compared the Sheriff with the KKK and racist David Duke.

Sgt. Ortolano said, “We’re about to enforce SB1070 and the White House doesn’t trust  Arizona Peace Officers to enforce the law without racially profiling.  It is unfortunate that JD Hayworth has agreed and now wrongly attacked Sheriff Paul Babeu. The former congressman should know better than to attack law enforcement for political gain and he needs to retract his statements and apologize to the Sheriff.  Just last week, Sheriff Babeu was publicly praised by the Anti-Defimation League for his public statements against hate and bigotry.”

Sheriff Babeu was the honor graduate from the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy and is a decorated Police Officer and Army Officer, who served in Iraq and commanded soldiers at the Arizona/Mexican border.  Sheriff Babeu has been awarded two life savings medals as a Chandler Police Officer and awarded the meritorious service medal by Arizona’s former Adjutant General David Rataczk.  Sheriff Babeu serves as the President of the Arizona Sheriff’s Association and a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Grassroots Interviews with Keith Sipmann

Last night on Grassroots Interviews, I interviewed Keith Sipmann about the upcoming protest against the Maricopa County Board of Stupidvisors. In short, the Board set up a mediation scheme to pay themselves and their felonious cronies $46 million of YOUR money to settle their own spurious claims against the county over Andy Thomas’ and Sheriff Joe’s prosecution and investigation of the Stupidvisors’ corruption.

The Tea Party protest will take place on Wednesday, July 28 at 4:30 p.m. outside the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors’ auditorium between 2nd and 3rd Avenues on Jefferson Street in downtown Phoenix. BRING WATER and consider carpooling since most of the parking downtown is pay parking. Keith should have more info up on the Arizona Patriot Caucus site soon.

Keith and I also talked about the liberal group Expect More Arizona and the candidates that favor this big-government, pro-failed policies group, namely Heather Carter (LD 7 House candidate) and Craig Barton (another LD 7 House candidate). The voters of LD 6 & 7 need to note that Heather Carter and David Braswell have a teachers’ union-sponsored fundraiser together TONIGHT. Keith, in a recent article on this blog, noted other Democrats in Disguise (DIDs) running for office:
Karen Fann (LD 1 House)
Venessa Whitener (LD 21 House)
Paul Howell (LD 22 House)
Steve Urie (LD 22 House)
Wade McLean (LD 26 House)
Doug Sposito (LD 30 House).

Expect More Arizona is supported by the liberal group Greater Phoenix Leadership (former McCain staffer and RINO legislator Deb Gullet works for GPL). They sponsored the Twelve in `10 fundraiser for big-government RINO Republicans and Democrats. The Republicans who are helping Democrats win by raising money for them and Democrats supported by GPL are:
Karen Fann (LD 1 House)
Bill Konopnicki (LD 5 Senate)
Amanda Reeve (LD 6 House)
Michele Reagan (LD 8 Senate)
Eric Ulis (LD 8 House)
Justin Johnson (LD 10 Senate)
Adam Driggs (LD 11 Senate)
Kate Brophy McGee (LD 11 House)
John Nelson (LD 12 Senate)
Rich Crandall (LD 19 Senate)
Doug Sposito (LD 30 House)

The interview also covered other topics.

Grassroots Interviews with CD-7 Candidate Robert Wilson

Shortly ago on Grassroots Interviews, I interviewed CD 7 candidate Robert Wilson.  He’s hoping to win the August 24 Republican primary and go on to defeat the ultra-liberal incumbent Democrat Raul Grijalva in the November 2 general election. The race isn’t as crowded as CD 3 or CD 5, but Robert does have a primary. I wish him luck.

Charles Black Withdraws Endorsement of Jim Deakin

Mohave GOP Candidate for CD2 Charles Black Withdraws Endorsement for Jim Deakin

KINGMAN – Effective today Arizona Congressional Candidate Charles Black withdraws his endorsement and support for GOP candidate Jim Deakin in his race for the US Senate Race in Arizona. An accumulation of events have culminated in this decision. “I can no longer support his candidacy due to a variety of factors that weigh heavily on my heart” Black said.

The most recent event, publication of the proposed itinerary for a border trip last Thursday, in clear violation of necessary security arrangements was the final event that caused Mr. Black to decide on this course of action. Prior to that, Jim’s campaign has falsely claimed that JD Hayworth personally recommended that Arizona’s citizens take their names off Jim Deakin’s petitions on April 7, 2010. Jim himself stated to a small group that, in fact he had a video of JD making such a claim, but chose not to post the video. Later, Jim stated online that Steven Robinson lied about this statement, and denied making that claim. After numerous requests for Jim to correct the record by local constituents, that went ignored; “I determined my responsibility was to my potential future constituents and therefore disassociate myself from the Deakin Campaign. I will no longer support, or campaign for Jim Deakin and I would ask that he remove my name from any website or campaign literature”.

“In my campaign for US Congress District 2, I have strived to maintain complete respect and integrity in my challenge of the incumbent Trent Franks, whom I respect highly. We have our differences, which is why I’m in the race. I have worked diligently to maintain my reputation and conduct myself to the highest ethical standards. This decision, though very difficult, due to the friendship developed over the four months was best for myself, my family, my state and country”.

Deakin alleges daughters “attacked,” “accosted verbally” by JD Hayworth “volunteers,” “supporters”

On Tuesday, July 20th, U.S. Senate candidate Jim Deakin spent an hour on the Barry Young show during the 8:00 hour. During that interview the following conversation took place:

==========================================

Young: What’s the worse thing that you’ve been called? I mean what really got to you, even early on or maybe even now late in this the end game?

Deakin: Well, the only thing that really got to me is when people would chase my daughters down in the parking lots and attack them and tell them to ask me to drop out of the race.

Young: Your kids!?

Deakin: Yes, two different occasions, two different children, they were chased down in parking lots and not assaulted but accosted verbally and on behalf of one of my opponents.

Young: The daughters?

Deakin: The daughters, yes.

Young: And the point was what? They’re gonna come home and tell daddy to. Well, I guess its [Deakin laughs nervously] you know little Melia went and told President Obama he ought to plug that hole. I thought he was talking about the fence [Deakin laughs nervously] but he was talking about the oil well so…

Deakin: Right

Young: They’re gonna get to you through your daughters.

Deakin: Yea

Young: Did that, did that unnerve you?

Deakin: Well, it it did bother me uh but when they when they came home and told the story er, um they said this is more proof that you should not drop out because those guys shouldn’t be have that position if that’s what their gonna allow their volunteers and supporters to do.

Young: So, you didn’t, I didn’t, I wouldn’t of expected that. I wouldn’t, you know, usually the families, if anybody has any common sense at all, the families are hands off. You don’t involve the families of the candidates in this unless you bring them up. I mean, it’s, these are, this is your family. You have a right to bring ‘em out and talk to them and all of that, but usually its hands off.

Deakin: Generally, that’s, that’s polite.

Young: Who, what candidate were they, were these people supporting?

Deakin: JD Hayworth

Young: JD Hayworth, all right.

==========================================

I would like to know why Jimmie Deakin never contacted the campaign to inform the JD Hayworth campaign that these alleged incidents took place? Why is this the first time the campaign is hearing about it – on KFYI? Furthermore, can Jimmie Deakin provide the names of these alleged JD Hayworth volunteers or supporters? If these incidents did indeed occur, I would be the first one to tell these individuals to apologize to Deakin’s family before dismissing them from anything to do with the campaign.

I wholeheartedly agree that family members of candidates are OFF LIMITS with the exception that a family members puts them self into the public arena.

Needless to say I am angry about this allegation because it sounds like a pattern of falsehoods I have observed and witnessed from the Deakin campaign on several occasions.

Earlier in the campaign, Jimmie Deakin’s campaign alleged that the JD Hayworth campaign was actively engaged in having individuals remove their name from his petition. Deakin even claimed he had a video tape that gave proof of this petition-gate “scandal.” When I got wind of this claim, I immediately issued a statement that Deakin’s claim was false and that there was no concerted or organized effort by the JD Hayworth campaign to engage in this type of behavior. Then a Deakin supporter by the name of Jesse Matthewson claimed I wrote a post on another blog called Seeing Red Arizona pushing the petition-gate “scandal.” I quickly corrected him explaining that I do not write for Seeing Red Arizona and never have. (Why would I? I have my own blog right here!)

This put Deakin’s credibility – not just as a candidate but as an individual – in serious question.

During another time, individuals came forward – even as late as last Friday on the Barry Young show – and stated that Jimmie Deakin publicly admitted that he knew he could not win the primary race and would stay in the race to spite JD Hayworth and cause him to lose the race. (Is it any wonder why people believe he is conspiring with John McCain? I don’t subscribe to that conspiracy. I just think Deakin is egotistically delusional.) When confronted by Tea Party activists, Deakin has denied he said anything close to his earlier statement about spiting JD Hayworth. Again, several individuals have stated he is lying.

Finally, I personally question Deakin’s credibility over an incident that took place the morning of  April 10th in Casa Grande. That day, I was surrogating for JD Hayworth at the request of Tea Party leaders. During my speech, Adonia Deakin and Jim Deakin’s father began to heckle and yell during my speech. It continued until an automobile accident occurred right in front of the Tea Party rally and everyone stopped to render aid. During that same rally, Deakin also spoke. I stood there and listened to what he had to say as did others. He was treated respectfully and politely. I cannot say the same for Jim Deakin and his family who were extremely rude and disrespectful.

In my opinion based on my experience and the experience of others, Jim Deakin has a serious credibility problem. Until he identifies the names of these so-called JD Hayworth “volunteers and supporters” who allegedly  ”attacked” and “accosted verbally” his daughters, his accusations have no credibility. But if Jim Deakin does step forward and identifies who these people are, I will be the first one to make sure they are told they are not welcome at the JD Hayworth campaign.
