JIM DEAKIN: “TEA PARTY ACTIVIST” OR McCAIN WANNABE?
Posted by Radical American Patriot under Blogs , Campaigns & Elections , Debates , Ethics[26] Comments
On the eve of the long awaited, much anticipated debates between the GOP candidates for US Senate, Arizona will be introduced to the third, virtually unknown candidate, Jim Deakin. This third candidate, with absolutely no political experience, no history of public volunteer service, or any activism in the Republican Party is poised to appear on the statewide stage, and hence a profile on the national stage as the country begins to focus on this race. With the televised debates on July 16th and 17th, this Senate race takes on national implications as the 2008 GOP candidate for President John McCain battles in the first truly competitive race he’s ever faced, NOT in a general election but in the Republican Primary on August 24th. Of course, the real challenge is not from this unknown political neophyte but the broadcaster turned Congressman and then KFYI afternoon talk show host, JD Hayworth.
Much has been already written about this race, featuring the most Progressive Senator in the GOP, John McCain, author of the now discredited McCain-Feingold “Campaign Finance” law, two failed “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” legislative attempts, commonly known as “Amnesty”, AND co-sponsor of last year’s “Cap & Trade” legislation with his good friend, Joe Lieberman; whose explosive temper and legislative bully tactics are legendary, as well as feared, in the halls of Congress. Facing him is the solidly conservative six term Congressman JD Hayworth, who literally wrote the book on stopping illegal immigration, “Whatever It Takes”. Recruited and endorsed by fellow conservatives and allies in the Illegal Immigration fight, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Senators Russell Pearce and Ron Gould, Hayworth is no stranger to the vicious attacks he now experiences from the McCain Campaign. Finally, the race comes into much sharper focus with the passage of Pearce’s SB1070 Bill that now is not only the focus in Arizona but Nationally with the protests and counter protests and the Justice Department’s recent lawsuit against the State of Arizona. Clearly the battle lines are drawn and the stakes are extremely high.
This brings us to this third candidate, Jim Deakin who barely qualified for the ballot with the lowest petition signature count of any statewide candidate; in spite of 16 months of campaigning throughout the state. It’s understood that Jim would not even be in the debates were it not for McCain’s insistence that he be included. In the first poll where Deakin is even listed, the June Rasmussen poll, Deakin garnered only 7% in that June poll. One suspects that much of that support results from the extremely negative attack ads against Hayworth, so people who will NOT vote for McCain, perhaps chose Deakin because they were indeed influenced by the misleading ads from the McCain Campaign. So while Deakin claims to be the “Tea Party Activist”, it’s quite understandable why McCain chooses to “Puff up” the Deakin Campaign.
Speaking about the polls Jim Deakin recently spoke to a group of Republicans at an LD 6 meeting where he was asked about his claims over the previous months that he had 20% support regardless of the polling. When asked how he came up with that number, Deakin declared that in addition to the 7% in the June Rasmussen poll, another poll had a combined 14% for “other/undecided”! Say What? How does he justify those numbers? This is certainly ‘accounting’ that would make Bernie Madoff or Enron’s Ken Lay proud! Here is the link to the You Tube video page where Jim ‘explains’ these numbers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NRhOxVDuwk.
Certainly, we would expect this type of ‘analysis’ from the McCain campaign. After all, when running his infamous “Snakes in Guam” ad campaign, McCain conveniently forgot that he voted for the same bill. But, I will give Jim the benefit of the doubt, after all when you don’t have the facts on your side, you’ve got to be creative! However, at this SAME meeting Jim accused JD of voting for Cap & Trade legislation in 2005! Now that would be newsworthy if it were INDEED true! Here is the link and the video, followed by the real explanation of this vote. It will show Jim to be either completely dishonest or incredibly incompetent, for his completely inaccurate ‘information’ regarding this bill HR 6, “The Energy Policy Act of 2005”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfmaMJCzrgQ.
Now, here’s the real story on this Section 752 of HR 6. For years the EPA has instituted limits on pollution emissions from all sources. These limits were restrictive and jobs killing regulations. Indeed no one would argue with the need to control pollution, just the level of restrictions. Due to technological improvements, “mobile pollution emitters” were maintaining standards well below their limits. Businesses asked for and received permission to “trade” these credits to “stationary pollution emitters”. Since all this was occurring at the regulatory level, Congress desired to be informed about what the EPA was indeed doing. Is Jim correct in calling it a ‘pilot cap & trade’? Technically yes. Did THIS bill authorize or give legislative authority to the program? Not in the least! Read the section for yourself: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c109:6:./temp/~c109rf11gE:e756711:. This Section 752 simply required the EPA to report to Congress about the program! Simply put, this bill put the “light of Congress” on the program. It was a “Sunshine” provision to require full disclosure to the already existing program. While their may be problems with some provision in this bill, Section 752 is NOT one of them. So ask yourself, “Is Jim dishonestly reporting or incompetently comprehending this bill?” You decide.
Lastly, Jim has a propensity of deliberately and falsely accusing JD’s campaign of doing ‘dirty tricks’; specifically Deakin accused JD’s of promoting a “Signature Withdrawal” campaign to recruit people to take their names off Jim Deakin’s petitions. On April 7th, Jim’s Cochise County volunteer coordinator, Jesse Mathewson, also a blogger with the Examiner.com called the “Cochise County Libertarian Examiner”; wrote the following blog titled “Just another typical dirty Washington politician, JD Hayworth cannot play nice”. Here’s the link: http://www.examiner.com/x-18115-Cochise-County-Libertarian-Examiner~y2010m4d7-Just-another-typical-dirty-Washington-politician-JD-Hayworth-cannot-play-nice. This is a pretty serious charge, if it were true. However, it’s not.
Here are the facts: on April 5th, a former Deakin supporter wrote an e-mail to the campaign informing Jim of her intention to withdraw her signature from Jim’s petitions and encourage others to do so at the American Citizens United meeting on Wednesday the 7th. The campaign responded to her e-mail. Rob Haney, a notary, was recruited to notarize the forms for those who also decided to follow this lady’s example. The meeting began at 6:30PM with discussion regarding this “Signature Withdrawal” program. JD Hayworth was scheduled to speak, but had not yet arrived. Other candidates then spoke, and JD, who arrived late, spoke sometime after 7:30. The meeting ended around 8:30PM. Yet, just six minutes later, Mathewson, writing from Cochise County describes what allegedly happened at this meeting, falsely attributing it to the Hayworth Campaign! In his post Jesse claims that he read blogs and Tea Party discussions regarding about this meeting earlier that day. Now I’ve check all the Tea Party discussion groups, and there were NO discussions regarding this event, which hadn’t even taken place! Yes, there was one blog describing the process on “Seeing Red AZ” blog website. Yet, the Deakin campaign made a post accusing JD’s field director Shane Wikfors of writing the blog, yet HE doesn’t even write for that blog! In further accusations Jim Deakin posts the on his Facebook page; and inserts Wikfors name into the byline. The blog is still at the website on April 6th. Shane Wikfors name is nowhere to be found. The fact is Jim, through his surrogate dishonestly attibutes the actions of one disgruntled former supporter to JD and his campaign. Sounds like John McCain to me.
This is a very detailed explanation to be sure. But it illustrates the point as to just how Jim Deakin will act to denigrate JD Hayworth. Yet he goes even further; for on April 15th, at the Bullhead City Tea Party rally he states in front of a small group of supporters and one JD supporter, that HE had the video from the meeting SHOWING JD promoting this very campaign! One week later, when this same supporter challenged Jim online, to either produce the video or resign; Jim ignored his request for THREE weeks! And only then, he denied ever making that claim, accusing the supporter of lying!
So one must ask if this is what you would expect out of one who claims to be a “Tea Party Activist”, yet admits he entered the race BEFORE the Tea Party movement began in earnest. Or are these, and many more campaign faux paus, simply the bumbling efforts of a woefully unprepared and incompetent campaigner, to keep alive any glimmer of hope for his virtually impossible nomination? Certainly John McCain has nothing to fear from Deakin, with his vast war chest, including over $20 Million left from his failed Presidential bid. Jim might shave off some of the conservative vote that would otherwise go to Hayworth. Just how much, and whether it WILL work to keep McCain in office will be determined in the Primary election. This much is certain to me: If John McCain, via his surrogates did not put Jim Deakin up to running for the US Senate in anticipation of a Hayworth run, it’s Only because even HE was not that astute!

If political experience, a history of public volunteer service, and activism in the Republican Party are the most important factors considered by voters then I imagine they will all be voting for John McCain hey?
Since many voters are looking at positions and integrity over previous political history as an elected official this election cycle Jim Deakin might well be their choice (or not).
In the end the voters will analyze each candidate and vote for the person that is best qualified for the post.
I certainly hope that person wins.

J.D. Hayworth is back his old ways of pushing people around.
I’ve had J.D. I’ve had enough.
I’ve had McCain, I’m done.
Get out all the incumbents.
I look forward to seeing Jim Deakin in the debates. And even more so, I look forward to him at least beating J.D. in the primary.

This site is like th,e ‘MSNBC for JD’ I have never seen anything like this. Is there a site like this for McCain? I can almost laugh when I read these articles b/c I keep thinking someone is going to remind us of who JD Hayworth really is. Sadly, this site fails to tell the entire truth. Lie by omission? It is amazing you can say Keating without Abramoff…It is amazing you can call JD the conservative when he is perhaps the most hypocritical candidate I have read about in years. At least with McCain, we have enough of his history to know exactly who he is and what he is about…good, bad, indifferent… McCain is not the best in the world, but in politics, we are faced with the best of the choices we are given. JD is far from a good candidate no matter what you choose to write about. We all know the truth about these guys, with or without the ads, we know the corruption and stupidity that JD has been involved with. We know that JD is not the ‘conservative’ you would like us to believe he is.
July 9th, 2010 at 2:54 pm
I had the opportunity twice to hear JD, and listen to him answer questions in front of large varied groups.
I saw McCain in action once–He was rude to one questioner and still advocated “Cap and Trade”
On the second occasion of seeing JD, it was in front of a Republican gathering. The event was billed as an opportunity to hear the positions of JD, McCain and Deakin
McCain failed to show up. It was found later that he had attended a fund raiser in Virginia with a large group of lobbyists.
JD gave a 10 minute speech outling the most important issues.
Deaking got up and told us:
1) I am a submarine veteran
2) I am a citizen. my name is Jim Deakin, and I am running for Senater (5 times)
July 9th, 2010 at 3:27 pm
What a bully J.D. Hayworth is. Did you see how he was looking at Jim Deakin’s paper. You just don’t do that at a forum, totally un-ethical.What about the rest of what Deakin had to say was ommitted.
Is this really O.K.? All I can say is how bad can you get.
July 9th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
Probably the worst one can get is trying to supplant the likes of McCain with the likes of Deakin.
But then again evil and stupidity have an historically close political alliance in modern America.
July 9th, 2010 at 4:15 pm
I love how each candidate’s fanatics throw mud at the opposing candidates’ fanatics and then expect this to convince voters to support their guy. It’s obvious none of you have ever tried to market or a sell a product or successfully persuade others to your point of view in your life.
We have 2 debates next week. About a week later we’ll have polling that will indicate the probable will of the people. Hopefully the grass root voters will show a higher level of maturity when they make their choice than the childish food fight on SA that the Senate primary has turned into.
July 9th, 2010 at 5:27 pm
Dean Martin dropped out of the governor’s race today because he realized he had no chance; Governor Brewer has it in the bag due to SB 1070. But Dean is an impressive, standup guy who wasn’t in the race for his own ego. It’s unfortunate that Deakin does not have the character of a Dean Martin!
July 9th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
This post is just more proof that JD is very worried about losing to Deakin.
July 9th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
Bruce Homestead said on July 9th, at 3:27 pm: “What a bully J.D. Hayworth is.”
Bruce, I’m glad you watched the video. Perhaps you failed to notice that this was a Jim Deakin campaign video, which coincidentally enough was from the same LD 6 meeting where Jim said defended his claim of 20% support, using two different polls.
The question about Global Warming came up, JD answered it, and voila! Jim just “happened” to have information in his hands about an obscure section of a 5 year-old bill? Can anyone say a “Plant”? So, while Jim had this information already in his hands, to accuse JD (falsely as I proved) of voting for a “Cap & Trade”; JD had no prior knowledge that Jim was going to present this specific information. You say it is “un-ethical” to look at the information over Jim’s shoulder, why is that?
Isn’t the truly unethical action Jim setting up JD with a planted question, having specific information relating to the question, making deliberately deceptive claims: that JD was ‘attacking McCain’ by pointing out John’s unequivocal support for “Cap & Trade”, and then for him to deliberately misrepresent JD’s vote on a bill, when he was clearly prepared for the question, had a ‘friendly’ ask it and then with his prepared notes (something he has rarely ever used before) attack JD for a vote that was NOT what Jim claimed it was? Which do you or anyone else really believe to be ‘un-ethical?
July 9th, 2010 at 6:29 pm
What isn’t exactly clear is why Jim Deakin is attacking JD Hayworth.
July 9th, 2010 at 7:53 pm
JD Hayworth is bright breath of fresh air in a race where there is slimy character assassination tactics being used by the other candidates in an effort to AVIOD the issues – WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO FOR US IF YOU ARE ELECTED?????? seems like JD is THE ONLY CADIDATE to clearly offer a definition of what we can expect – BORDER SECURITY NOW, NO AMNESTY, NO CAP & TRADE, expose the global warming HOAX, defend our Constitution and Bill of Rights, Drill HERE – Drill NOW – Drill with American Companies and American WORKERS who pay taxes …. the others are slinging mud and avoiding any discussion of the issues – why listen to their character assassination rhetoric??? Go JD, thank you for offering us such a great clear choice for conservative representation.
July 9th, 2010 at 9:41 pm
McCain insisted Deakin be included in this debate?? Well this sure puts the pieces of the puzzle together of a rumor in all the tea parties in AZ. Our tea party heard Deakin and his supporters started verbally attacking through emails, a tea party leader several weeks ago because she was afraid John McCain would get re-elected and told Deakin she couldn’t risk throwing her vote away by voting for Deakin and asked Deakin about some rumors that he was a political plant receiving money from McCain’s supporters to get him to stay in the race as long as he would focus on attacking J.D. Hayworth and not on McCain. After reading this article it just confirms everything about the rumors. The pieces of this puzzle fits!!
July 9th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
I’m a precinct committee man and not in the TEA Party’s but we heard about this at our LD meeting last month. Word travels fast LOL! My wife is on the MCRC. They heard about it too. I don’t put this past McCain at all. Your right. It DOES make sense now especially since McCain wanted Deakin in on the debate. They are going to double team Hayworth and we will get to witness this ourselves. McCain is a crafty one. If there’s not much dirt throwing going on between Deakin and McCain, these rumors about McCain keeping Deakin in the race himself are going to kick into high gear in Arizona.
July 10th, 2010 at 6:29 am
JD Hayworth is the clear choice.
Arizonans will see that during the debates.
July 10th, 2010 at 9:36 am
Wait til the debates. JD will win by a landslide. He is clearly the Candidate of choice. JD has my vote.
July 10th, 2010 at 3:51 pm
The only thing I know about Mr. Citizen candidate is through some posts of his, a woman name Adona (or something like that) and a person who just uses initials of JPD. Pretty vulgar and hate filled posts by people supporting a Mr. Citizen candidate. I saw his youtube videos and am very unimpressed with his knowledge of issues. Is there anything this guy has accomplished politically on his own, because all I ever hear him do is attack Hayworth? He’s not giving us any information to explain why he would be a better choice than McCain or Hayworth. From the hateful things I have seen him and these other two people post, I would be too embarrassed to send him to D.C. I wonder if he learned his dirty campaign tricks from McCain too. I’m all for grassroots candidates but Mr. Citizen sounds like just another dirty politician with no experience.
July 10th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
Well said Carly, well said. You are right, he has NO positive plan other than get rid of ALL the incumbents. Even his good friend, Charles Black, in the CD2 race against Trent Franks, no less than the MOST Conservative Rep. in the House OR Senate, is NOT GOOD ENOUGH for these ignorant “Duh, let’s throw da bums out!” yahoos! (Oops, sorry Yahoo, didn’t mean to insult you!
I’ve heard Deakin speak throughout Phoenix. In addition to being deceptive about JD’s voting records, he is completely unprofessional!
July 10th, 2010 at 10:27 pm
Friends,
We can boil the Deakin Question down to one of two possible origins:
1. He is an egotistic political wannabe and has no idea of how our political system works, OR
2. McCain is secretly supporting him in hopes of diluting the vote for JD.
Make your choice on these two scenarios, but this is the nitty-gritty on Mr. Deakin
Folks, if you want “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” to become the amnesty program that WE ALL KNOW it means, then vote for John McCain, because that is what you will get! If, on the other hand, you want to stop this insane invasion of our country and secure our borders (both north and south) you will vote for JD Hayworth!
Lets work together to give Mr McCain is well deserved retirement and Federal pension. Let’s put a person back in Congress who knows how to make things happen and knows how to fight for us.
This is the year for JD! God Bless.
July 10th, 2010 at 10:35 pm
Dave if you listen to McCain on Cap and Trade and you think for two seconds it is Obama’s idea of Cap and Tax, you are sadly mistaken. McCain has made it very clear what he thinks of Obama’s disgusting policy ideas.
July 11th, 2010 at 12:26 am
Deakin is Deakin, McCain is McCain, and Hay’s worth just about or close to free money in an infomercial! Deakin is a viable candidate and should have access to the debate. Hayworth obviously believes differently.
July 11th, 2010 at 2:50 am
Nathan, And the Arizona Diamondbacks will win the World Series!! They’re just as viable as Deakin!!
Please learn that there is a difference between propaganda (your comments) and the facts in this post. You fail to even think about Jim Deakin’s dishonest actions; let alone responding.
I do agree with you, that Jim should be in the debate. His complete incompetence will be exposed then. As we speak, Jim is ‘cramming’ for the debate, like for “Finals Week” in college, thinking he will buffalo everyone about his ‘knowledge’.
The only question will be whether Jim or John McCain will appear more incompetent; my money is still on Jim!
July 14th, 2010 at 9:03 am
Steven Robinson, Radical American Patiot (RAP) aka Veritas Vincit aka Glenn Beck’s my hero aka Samuel Adams – good job RAP – one man show.
Deakin didn’t say in Bullhead City on April 15, 2010 that he had the tape – “YOU LIE” – you are a delusional fool that needs to get back on your meds ASAP – you are a debit to Hayworth which just shows how desperate he and his people are.
Time to withdraw Hayworth – save some face.
July 20th, 2010 at 2:11 am
Vile, extremist supporters. I’ve seen your vile messages all over Tea Party websites JPD. You have done more harm than good to Deakin’s campaign. You have attacked Tea Party members and leaders who will not support Deakin. Not once have I seen any of these people you’ve vilified respond or even acknowledge your relevance. You are in fact, irrelevant. You cower behind a computer screen bullying, intimidating, insulting Hayworth supporters. You wreak and disgust me. There are more articles coming out it seems everyday exposing your little man as well as his radical, extremist supporters such as yourself, who have more of the characteristics of the Black Panthers rather than true TEA Party conservatives. Oh yeah, I’ve seen your response to those accusations as well: ‘Hayworth Teocon Koolaid Drinkers’?? Up until the debates this past weekend, I had not decided who I would vote for in this election. Your comment above was the deciding factor for me. I will send my own letter to Mr. Deakin explaining why I NOW will not vote for him. I will also be contacting the State Secretary’s office and the RNC headquarters in Phoenix, to request that my name be taken off of Mr. Deakin’s voter petition! You are the straw that has broken Mr. Deakin’s campaign. THUG MUCH??
July 24th, 2010 at 5:35 pm
Glenn Beck’s my hero,
Two things I would like to point out kindly,
1) I am no longer supporting Jim Deakin and he is not “The Citizen Candidate”, he stole that line from me when we were on a radio show together.
2) Yes, I am running against Trent Franks. Not to throw the bums out, I have never said that. In fact I have never thrown any mud at Trent my entire campaign. I do feel there are lots of things I could have thrown out there. I am not running that type of campaign. I feel that I have other solutions to offer to try and save what is left of our Republic. Trent Franks and I have a very friendly and kind understanding about me running against him. We have even had dinner together over the 4th of July were we put all politics aside and just enjoyed the evening.
Thank you,
Charles Black

The following line, “On April 7th, Jim’s Cochise County volunteer coordinator, Jesse Mathewson, also a blogger with the Examiner.com called the “Cochise County Libertarian Examiner”; wrote the following blog titled “Just another typical dirty Washington politician, JD Hayworth cannot play nice”. However, it’s not.”
Is full of holes and untruths…
First I have NOT been the volunteer coordinator for several months.
While this is a blog, the Examiner is a local news source – qualifying as news, as the articles written are cited, sourced and verified (OR they are not paid as such.) And I get paid – well…
Lastly, I have asked for refutations to be submitted…so far no real proof has been submitted and my editors after reviewing my facts and proof allowed the article to remain. (yes I can get reviewed by outside editors…another simple proof that this is NOT a blog as this is.)
So – I am requesting politely that this article be amended, or I will file a civil libel suit pursuant to ARS 12-653.02 and 12-651
