Who does Jan Brewer really work for?

YouTube Preview Image

I tried to find the Yes on 100 video the governor appears on TV on to include in this post.

But after watching this, I’m amazed.  Who does she really work for?

Well, if you are stumping for left wing unions and PACs, who are the major funders for this effort, well then, you’re working for left wing unions and PACs.

The ads are clever and list the most inane sounding unions and PACs as “major donors”, like the fire union and the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, but dig into the donor list and see who you find.  The ultra-left wing AEA, among other more notorious liberals.

Does Jan Brewer believe that one of these left wingers will EVER vote for her?  They wont.  Not until heck freezes over.

Jan Brewer and those Republicans who support her, in the true spirit of Orwellian doublethink and doublespeak, purport to be Reagan conservatives while simultaneously proclaiming that prosperity will only come via a tax increase.

They attempt to provide themselves with political cover by saying that Reagan raised taxes to close deficits.  Did he?  Arguable.  What is unarguable is that Reagan NEVER argued that you can tax yourself into prosperity.  But that is precisely the type of “leadership” Ms. Brewer would have us believe is Republican leadership.

It’s a farce.  They are trying to turn the world upsidedown and then say it’s right side up.  They are being left wing liberals and supporting left wing liberal agendas while trying to claim to be conservative Republicans and doing so in the midst of the TeaParty revolution.

Could the governor do anything MORE to hurt the Arizona Republican Party at this point in time?  I don’t think so.

This little gem is the best though.  See this video below, in it you will hear the standard tax and spend mantra:

Unless you vote to increase taxes, the prison doors will open, the school doors will close, children will die and ambulances will stop running.

Anytime you hear that, you are hearing a tax-and-spend liberal speaking about their issue.

If the governor had any shame whatsoever, she would be embarassed by this.  I’m sorry, Governor, you cannot tax yourself into prosperity, no matter how you spin it.  Also, conservatives don’t advocate for tax increases, no matter how you spin it.

If you’re going to argue that she’s pro-life, therefore she’s conservative?  Well there are pro-life democrats too.  Just being pro-life does not a conservative make.

Anyway, here goes…..  Jan Brewer: People are Going to Die Unless Prop 100 Passes

Promise that higher taxes will “protect education” rings hollow

by Starlee Rhoades
Goldwater Institute

In two weeks, Arizona voters will decide if we should raise the state sales tax by 18 percent. We’re being told this money will “protect education.” We’ve been down this road before and it didn’t work out the way we were promised.

Ten years ago, we voted to raise our sales tax and dedicate the extra money to classroom spending. This year, the Arizona auditor general did an investigation and found that just over half of that money actually makes it to the classroom.

Click here to watch a 30-second video explaining this issue.

For every teacher in Arizona, there is almost one “non-teacher” on the payroll. Tucson Unified School District, for example, has hundreds of employees who work at the school district headquarters. Those folks aren’t in the schools teaching children.

Beyond excessive numbers of “non-teachers,” money is spent on all sorts of other non-classroom related items. TUSD’s website proudly highlights its wellness program that “aids in developing physical activity, healthy nutrition, stress and disease management and self care lifestyles.” But this wellness program isn’t for children. It’s for the adults who work for the district. Tax dollars that should be helping children learn instead are going to programs to help teachers lose weight.

One more note on TUSD. This headline in yesterday’s Arizona Daily Star caught my eye: “TUSD board rejects cutting own staff.”

Multiply Tucson’s excesses across the state’s 165 school districts and it might be easier to forgive me for being skeptical when I hear that the only choice we have is to raise our taxes or fire a bunch of teachers. If politicians were serious about protecting education, they would reduce the amount of money going to the massive education bureaucracy and stop funding programs that don’t help children learn.

We have already raised our taxes with the promise that the money would get to the classroom. If the government hasn’t kept that promise, why would they keep this one?

Dr. Gosar Calls on Congress to Enact Law Limiting Citizenship

Flagstaff, AZ. April 30, 2010: Dr. Paul Gosar, CD1 Republican primary frontrunner, has called on Congress to get serious about true immigration reform and finally pass H.R. 1868 (Birthright Citizenship Act of 2009). Introduced in 2009 by Rep. Nathan Deal (GA-9), the legislation would limit citizenship to children born to parents who are (1) a U.S. citizens or nationals; (2) a lawful permanent resident alien whose residence is in the United States; or (3) an alien performing active service in the U.S. Armed Forces. Currently there are 91 cosponsors of the bill including two AZ representatives, Trent Franks and John Shadegg.

“It is difficult to imagine a more irrational and self-defeating legal system than one which makes unauthorized entry into this country a criminal offense and simultaneously provides perhaps the greatest possible inducement to illegal entry,” said Lino Graglia, University of Texas law school Professor and constitutional scholar who supports H.R. 1868.

Dr. Gosar has been traveling across Congressional District 1 discussing the importance of immigration enforcement with Arizona voters. “We can no longer just talk about securing our border; it’s time to get serious,” said Dr. Gosar. “I couldn’t agree more with Prof. Graglia that the system is backwards. By correcting a mistaken understanding of the 14th Amendment we can start to eliminate a large incentive for immigrants to cross our border illegally to have their children. H.R. 1868 would do just that and in Congress I will not rest until this bill is passed.”

This idea is by no means new. Former Arizona Congressman, the late Bob Stump, who represented northern Arizona for many years, was a true fighter for responsible immigration reform. Stump introduced a similar bill in 2001, H.R. 190. Unfortunately the bill never made it to the floor for a vote.

In addition to these efforts currently the U.S., under the guidelines from the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice, does not grant citizenship to children born in the U.S. to diplomats and other foreign nationals. “The 14th Amendment was never intended to be used as a ploy to grant citizenship to children of parents who illegally enter this country,” said Dr. Gosar. “Restoring a correct understanding of citizenship should be a key element in implementing a broader, more aggressive national immigration policy.”

Dr. Gosar also calls into question Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick’s effectiveness as rural Arizona’s representative for once again not taking the lead on an issue of critical importance to Arizona. “Rep. Kirkpatrick continues to let her constituents down.  While our ranchers are being murdered, President Obama and Rep. Kirkpatrick, along with their Democrat cronies in Washington, fail to act,” stated Dr. Gosar. “Rep. Kirkpatrick has had plenty of opportunities to join Arizona in its fight for border security and immigration reform.  As one of her constituents, I am disappointed that she has not added her name to H.R. 1868. We need a stronger voice on immigration reform and I intend to be that voice for the people of our District.”

The 51-year old husband, 25 year resident of Flagstaff, father of three, sports and hunting enthusiast has been traveling all over Congressional District One for the past several months and has enjoyed meeting with supporters who share his belief that his background, and his experience in rural Arizona’s way of life, make him the GOP favorite to unseat Kirkpatrick.

Gosar has been endorsed by the American Dental Political Action Committee, Pinal County Supervisor Bryan Martyn, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and NRA past President Bob Corbin to name a few.  He is an Arizona’s former “Dentist of the Year”, who practices general dentistry in Flagstaff.

SB1070 & the Tea Party…

The national media outlets and leaders of certain minority communities are blasting the airwaves and internet with “legal opinions” about the new immigration law and even suggesting boycotts against Arizona — ironically most of these comments are from people who are not from Arizona. Like so many other issues that we conservatives find to be important, the leftist controlled media has distorted what SB 1070 will do.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said the federal government may challenge Arizona’s new law, and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, said Arizona’s new immigration law could siphon federal money and staff needed to go after truly dangerous immigrants.

I want make one thing very clear here….Gov. Jan Brewer did not write federal immigration laws that require permanent residents to carry green cards, or make it mandatory for employers to check immigration documentation. Washington did.

Arizona State Senator Sylvia Allen stated on a blog that “The federal law is very clear, if you are here on a visa you must have your papers on you at all times. That is the law. In Arizona all you need to show that you are a legal citizen is a valid driver license, MVD identification card, Native American Card, or a Military ID. This is what you need to vote, rent a car, or to use a credit card when shopping. So nothing new has been added to the federal law.”

SB1070 requires police officers, “when practicable,” to detain people they reasonably suspect are in the country without authorization and to verify their status with federal officials, unless doing so would hinder an investigation or emergency medical treatment. It also makes it a a misdemeanor to not carry immigration papers. In addition, it allows people to sue local government or agencies if they believe federal or state immigration law is not being enforced. Some opposing the bill state that Arizona doesn’t have the right to enforce this law, but according to a blog post by Attorney Walter Moore:

In 1983, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit – you read that right, the Ninth Circuit — concluded, in Gonzales v. City of Peoria, 722 F.2d 468, that, “Although the regulation of immigration is unquestionably an exclusive federal power, it is clear that this power does not preempt every state activity affecting aliens.” Rather, when “state enforcement activities do not impair federal regulatory interests concurrent enforcement is authorized.” The Court accordingly held “that federal law does not preclude local enforcement of the criminal provisions” of federal immigration law.

No one is going to be stopped on their way to an ice cream parlor or walking down the street. The Liberals who are in power in DC are angry because we dare try and do something about the problem. They want the “Transformation” of America that President Obama has talked about to continue.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) did an analysis of the latest Census data which indicates that Arizona’s illegal immigrant population is currently costing the state’s taxpayers about $2.2 billion per year for education, medical care and incarceration. In 2020 that number is estimated to rise to $3.9 billion. Those costs do not include Special English instruction, school nutrition programs, or basic welfare benefits.

To put this into perspective, the proposed Prop 100 sales tax that has everyone in a frenzy will raise about $1 billion annually from the private sector. Illegal immigration clearly costs Arizona taxpayers more than any proposed tax hike. So I ask you this, if the Tea Party movement is about lower taxes and fiscal responsibility; should we or should we not get involved in this debate?

Bottom line, we can’t afford to pay for the illegal population that is here now . This administrations push for Amnesty will tear this County, this State and our Country apart. Amnesty will be a genie that cannot be placed back in the bottle.

John McCain Fails to Support Arizona’s Immigration Law

My latest frustration stems from the media giving John McCain another free pass on Arizona’s newest immigration law, which I remind everyone has yet to go into effect.

On April 19th, the Phoenix Business Journal asked John McCain for comments on Arizona’s new immigration law, SB 1070. Here was his response:

“I think it’s a good tool,” McCain said during a conference call with reporters when asked about the bill. “It’s a tool that needs to be used.”

(Is it a good tool or perhaps, a good law?)

The title of the article, “McCain voices support for immigrant trespassing bill,” let the reader to believe that McCain supports the legislation. However, reading further into the article, Mike Sunnucks continues:

McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said the senator was not officially endorsing the trespassing bill in his comments, but was saying he understood Arizonans’ frustration with the lack of federal resources dedicated to dealing immigration and border security.

Did you catch that? McCain says he thinks its a good tool and then has one of his staffers deny he was endorsing the bill. To borrow a quote from our senior senator, even I was “misled.” (Read my earlier post.)

Back to the title of my post. Did Mike Sunnucks ever ask John McCain directly if he supported or would have even voted for the legislation? Sadly, I don’t think Sunnucks had the courage to press the question.

On Tuesday, April 27th, John McCain went on Sean Hannity’s television show to discuss Arizona’s newest immigration law. Hannity posed the following question to McCain:

Senator, as we were discussing earlier tonight, this bill which obviously you support has been compared to a form of terrorism, Nazi Germany, Jim Crow. People are calling for a boycott. I mentioned people calling for the burning of the city of Phoenix for crying out loud.

What is your reaction to people saying this? And obviously there’s been a misinterpretation of the bill. What is your reaction of — what they’re saying about it?

John McCain responded with the following answer:

Look, this is not a perfect solution. If I had written the bill, obviously it might have been somewhat different.

Then, last Friday, Greta Van Susteren had John McCain on her show as the so-called authority on border security and illegal immigration. According to the video and transcript, Greta asked McCain the following question:

There are many people — not so many, I guess, in Arizona, but certainly outside the state of Arizona giving Arizona an awful lot of heat over this statute that’s been passed and that Governor Brewer has signed into law. What’s your thought about the federal government and the state government in this battle over immigration?

John McCain responded in this fashion:

So my answer is that this law I probably would have written a little differently.

Is anyone picking up on this? McCain’s response is to thread the needle on this issue. Wonder why Somos Republicanos has been so silent lately? John McCain’s special interest group partner which has been pushing for “comprehensive immigration reform” is suddenly quiet voicing no opposition to McCain’s facade of support for the law. Could it be that he quietly reassured them that he actually does not support the law?

Why has Somos Republicans voiced adamant opposition to the law but has yet to utter an ill word toward John McCain?

The answer is that John McCain does NOT support Arizona’s new immigration law.

Where are the professional journalists who are supposed to ask the senior senator the hard questions. Why has no one pressed McCain on whether he actually supports the law? Are they intimidated or infatuated? Where is Howard Fischer when we need him? (Yes, that was a respectful hat tip to Howard Fischer who has always been good about asking the tough questions even when I don’t agree with him.)

John McCain has been using the word “frustration” in all his latest talking points dealing with the issue. He’s correct.  We’re all a little frustrated with the situation of illegal immigration. But many conservatives have also been frustrated far too long with John McCain’s position on the issue, his lack of action and most recently, his credibility during this election year.

Disclaimer: I am currently serving on the campaign of JD Hayworth 2010. However, I have been publicly critical of Senator John McCain for several years. If you don’t like what I’ve written here on my blog, you can go elsewhere or start your own blog.

Sam Crump endorsed by conservative leader and former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson

Phoenix, AZ, May 3, 2010 – Former Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN) has endorsed former State Representative Sam Crump (R-AZ) in his campaign to represent Arizona’s Third Congressional District and praised his conservative voting record.

Thompson served 8 years in the U.S. Senate, where he assembled a conservative voting record that won him praise and the affection of millions.  Thompson left Congress in 2006 and returned to the entertainment and broadcast industries.  Thompson’s radio show can be heard nationwide where he continues to discuss his conservative principles and the positive and profound impact they have on our nation.

In his endorsement of Crump, Thompson wrote “Sam is a proven conservative leader.  His principled stand against higher taxes and spending in the state Legislature has helped protect all Arizonans.  He’s a strong supporter of the Second Amendment.  As the owner of a small business he’ll fight for the rights of business owners in Congress. Sam will defend the right to life and he will defend our liberty.”

For his part, Crump said “I am honored to receive an endorsement from a great conservative leader like Senator Thompson.  He has been a leader on matters of domestic and foreign policy, a strong conservative voice for cutting spending and reducing the national debt. I think our nation will always be grateful to him for his role in helping with the confirmation of Chief Justice John Roberts.”

Sam Crump is a U.S. Army veteran and a founding partner in the law firm of Boates & Crump.  He was the charter President of the Rotary Club of Anthem and founded an orphanage in Uganda.  He is also a member of the American Legion.

Sam and his wife Colleen, a registered nurse at John C. Lincoln hospital in Deer Valley, have four children, three of whom attend Arizona colleges.  The Crumps are members of St. Rose Catholic Church in Anthem.

It’s Official: Arpaio is NOT running for Governor

PHOENIX, AZ – After months of mulling over a run for Arizona’s highest office, Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona decided today that continuing to serve as the county’s top law enforcement officer is in the best interests of the county and his constituents.
“I am humbled by the encouragement and outpouring of support for me to run for Governor. However, at the same time, so many have supported my campaign for re-election that I do not want to betray them by running for another office. I have come so far and accomplished so much in the past 18 years as Sheriff that to leave now just doesn’t make sense,” said Arpaio. “Right now, we are standing in the cross-hairs of
history in this state and as Sheriff of the most populous county in Arizona, there is much work yet to do.”

He continued, “I feel that I owe it to the people of Maricopa County, my hard-working employees and others who believe in my office’s policies to continue as their Sheriff. To leave this office open to appointment by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors of an interim Sheriff may very well put us on a path that would be extremely displeasing to the voters of this county.”

Arpaio has turned down the chance to run for Governor of Arizona several times before but the decision this time was infinitely more difficult. Ava, his wife of 53 years, was very vocal about wanting him to cap off his illustrious career as governor of the state of Arizona.
“His level of experience and knowledge given to him by almost 50 years in the international, federal and county government arenas would have made Joe a great governor. And this is a time when Arizona really needs a strong, decisive leader in that position. But I respect Joe’s decision to remain Sheriff,” Ava said.

Arpaio’s campaign committee, Re-Elect Joe Arpaio 2012, is still receiving contributions from literally every state in the Union but the vast majority of contributions are coming from residents of Maricopa County and other counties in Arizona.

The campaign announced in March of this year that it had reached its goal of $2 million. Today contributions are looming at $2.3 million.

Arpaio credits this truly remarkable level of support to his get-tough policies on crime, the operation of his jails including Tent City and his determination to continue enforcing the state and federal illegal immigration laws.

In recent public opinion surveys, Arpaio’s approval numbers among Arizona voters of all parties poll above 60%.

“We are going to look like Alabama in the 60s!”

This is an excellent article, hence my reprinting in this venue.  But first let me explain the title of this post.

The title quote for this reprint by Ro Chambeau as posted in the Gila Courier on May 2 comes from the moderate republican state representative from Yuma, Bill Konopnicki as quoted in the New York Times.  Here’s the complete quote:

“One of those moderates, State Representative Bill Konopnicki, Republican of Yuma, said planned amendments to address legal and other concerns never materialized. In the end, he said, “everybody was afraid to vote no on immigration. “We are going to look like Alabama in the ’60s,” said Mr. Konopnicki, who is facing a tough election ”

And after reading the following along with the actual text of the new law, you decide if the May Day protests in cities everywhere by amnesty and open border activists are warranted or not.

By the way, this is the first, as far as we can tell, law to protect Arizona from the financial and social ravages of illegal immigration the Yuma lawmaker has voted for since taking office in 2002.  He was an active vocal and financial opponent of the Protect Arizona Initiative which required voter ID.  He has repeatedly attempted to water-down Arizona’s employer sanction laws.  We suppose he’s trying to spiff up his image in keeping with his claim of being a “Constitutional Conservative” who “… will continue to protect Arizona’s border.”  (yeah, he’s saying that)

So here’s Mr. Chambeau’s excellent piece from the Gila Courier. . . .

“If you don’t read the newspaper, you’re uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you’re mis-informed.”  — Mark Twain

David Muir

ABC News Saturday anchor David Muir said the following while introducing a story on yesterday’s nationwide protests of Arizona’s SB 1070:

[the "angry" protests are underway] “…all because of that tough new Arizona law that allows police to stop anyone suspected of being in this country illegally…”

That is a misstatement.  The law has no such provision.  Sorry ABC.

This is what the law says:

B.  For any lawful contact made by a law enforcement official or agency of this state or a county, city, town or other political subdivision of this state where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States, a reasonable attempt shall be made, when practicable, to determine the immigration status of the person.  The person’s immigration status shall be verified with the federal government pursuant to 8 United States code section 1373(c).

“lawful contact” has subsequently been changed to read “lawful stop, detention, or arrest” ie enforcement of city, county, or state laws.

The new law also states

This section shall be implemented in a manner consistent with federal laws regulating immigration, protecting the civil rights of all persons and respecting the privileges and immunities of United States citizens.

I don’t see anything there about harassing people who take their kids out for ice cream as President Obama warned of.  But if you do and I missed it, feel free to comment.

Meanwhile, check out this controversial law that is sure to spawn protests across the nation:

“Every alien, eighteen years of age and over, shall at all times carry with him and have in his personal possession any certificate of alien registration or alien registration receipt card issued to him.”

Is this Arizona’s next crackdown?  New Mexico trying to up the ante?  Texas trying to stop the flow of illegals and drug smugglers?  Nope.  It’s federal law in place since 1952.  How racist is that?  George Will cited the law in his column.

So, maybe Congressman Raul Grijalva should call for a boycott of America.  Perhaps Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik should call federal immigration law “racist” and “stupid”.  Perhaps Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, and their ilk should comically characterize the feds as “Gestapo officers asking ’show me your papers’ “  Perhaps even the President of the United States Barack Obama should call federal immigration law “misguided”.

Finally, I really have to wonder about the Arizona Republic.  Their article about the Pinal County Sheriff’s Deputy who was shot by drug smugglers was headlined “5 attackers are hunted after ambush of deputy”.  Really?  That’s the best you can do?  How about this:  “Pinal deputy shot–drug smugglers suspected”.  In fact, the article did not even mention until the fourth paragraph (it’s not even on the front page, you had to turn to page 6 of the newspaper) that the deputy had been shot.   In that fourth paragraph, buried on page 6 of the newspaper, the reporters first mentioned that a helicopter had come under fire BEFORE they mentioned that a Pinal Sheriff’s Deputy had been shot and wounded.  It wasn’t until the 19th paragraph until the article mentioned that up to 30 rounds were fired at the deputy.

Republic sheds cred on SB 1070

The Arizona Republic is mad.  Circulation is way down, but worst of all is the fact that nobody cares what they think anymore.

The most recent example is on SB 1070.  Despite heavy editorializing against it and one-sided, anti-1070 “news coverage” SB 1070 was voted into law by our elected representatives and is supported by 70% of Arizonans.  But instead of the powers that be at the Republic asking themselves why they have lost influence, the Republic’s response is to start shouting in hopes that will make a difference.

In Sunday’s front page editorial the Republic scolded various elected officials in Arizona, including Senators Kyl and McCain, state Senator Russell Pearce and Governor Brewer.

The Republic hates SB 1070, but they also want amnesty, which they call “a path to legalization for the current undocumented population.”  The public has never supported amnesty.  They know that once the illegal aliens here are legalized, promises of border security will evaporate, just like last time.  Also, with a 10% unemployment rate, Americans simply won’t accept the argument that they should be forced to compete with another 11 million workers who are currently here illegaly that the Republic wants to give citizenship to.

In its editorial the Republic complains that our leaders are failing Arizona.  The Republic doesn’t have to win elections, unlike the officials the Republic attacked in its editorial.  Every indication is that our elected officials are actually listening to the people of Arizona rather than Republic, which is once again light years away from where the people of Arizona are.  That’s what really bothers the Republic.

Sheriff Arpaio to Endorse Bill Montgomery at Tomorrow’s News Conference

(Phoenix, AZ) Sheriff Joe Arpaio will endorse Bill Montgomery for Maricopa County Attorney at tomorrow’s news conference. Attorney Bill Montgomery is set to hold a news conference at 11:00am to announce he is officially joining the race for Maricopa County Attorney. The news conference will be held on the sidewalk in front of the County Attorney’s office, at 301 West Jefferson in downtown Phoenix.

“I am happy to accept Sheriff Arpaio’s endorsement for County Attorney,” said Montgomery. “He agrees with me that the County Attorney’s office must return to its mission of fighting crime and assuring justice,” added Montgomery.

Bill Montgomery is a decorated war veteran, seasoned prosecutor and tireless victims’ rights advocate running on a solid platform of restoring the community’s trust in County government, working with law enforcement for the tough but fair application of our illegal immigration laws, involving the community in fighting crime, establishing a child protection registry, and involving the business community in criminal justice policy. He is amassing a formidable list of endorsements, including U.S. Representative Trent Franks and the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association. From SB1070 to J.D. Hayworth’s Book on Illegal Immigration, “Whatever It Takes”

With the recent passage of Arizona’s SB1070, which gives state and local officials the authority to enforce immigration laws that have largely been ignored by our federal government, J.D. Hayworth’s book on illegal immigration is receiving renewed attention. Hayworth recently wrote a comprehensive book touching upon everything that is wrong with illegal immigration in America today. Regardless of your views on illegal immigration, there are enough shocking facts and statistics in this book to make anyone realize this has become a serious problem in the U.S. that cannot be ignored nor easily fixed by opening the borders. Ridiculed by immature staffers of rival Congressmen for being a “blowhard,” former Arizona Congressman Hayworth, who graduated with honors from college, easily disproves that stereotype with this well-written and informative book. Attacking Hayworth by calling him a “blowhard” merely reveals his opponents lack any real, substantive criticism.
