National Review is covering the races where Republicans will likely defeat Democrats this fall. They list three races in Arizona:
Harry Mitchell, Arizona: The second-term Mitchell faces a likely rematch with well-funded challenger in David Schweikert, former state lawmaker and former treasurer of Maricopa County, in a district scored R+5 in the Cook PVI.
Ann Kirkpatrick, Arizona: She’s a freshman Democrat in a Republican-leaning district; the Wall Street Journal placed Kirkpatrick on its list of the ten freshman Democrats most at risk. The GOP primary is crowded.
Gabby Giffords, Arizona: Representing a district on the Mexican border, she once bashed the Minutemen; now she calls for deploying National Guard troops to stop unlawful border crossings. She’s wavered on the state’s tough new illegal-immigration laws. She’ll face a strong GOP candidate in Jonathan Paton.

State finances will be in worse shape in 2014 if the proposed 18 percent increase in the state sales tax passes on May 18, according to long-term projections by the Joint Legislative Budget Committee. With Proposition 100′s passage, the deficit in 2014 would be almost $1 billion. Without Prop. 100′s tax increase, the projected 2014 deficit would be $200 million.
These new estimates highlight the fact that Prop. 100 fails to address the state’s long-term structural deficit brought on by too much spending. Past spending and new programs were not adequately funded when they were signed into law. But the damage this caused to the state’s financial stability wasn’t clear for a few years because tax revenues spiked during the real estate bubble. JLBC’s deficit projections assume the state maintains current eligibility requirements for taxpayer-funded health care, which is likely given the new mandates passed under the federal health care bill.
Prop. 100 is, at best, a partial, short-term fix to a long-term problem. Projected deficits in 2014 markedly worsen with the proposition’s passage for one simple reason: The tax increase is supposed to be temporary. This will allow the government to keep spending more than it would otherwise bring in through regular tax collections. In contrast, if Prop.100 is rejected, the state will have to adjust its spending priorities and get spending back in line with the normal tax revenues coming in the door.
Increasing taxes “temporarily” now just assures that we will have this debate again in three years. The only way to permanently solve an over-spending problem is to stop over-spending. That means we must take on the challenge of weeding out ineffective programs and waste and stop asking families to sacrifice so the government doesn’t have to.

The Goldwater Institute will host a national expert on the U.S. debt crisis in Scottsdale on May 26. Former U.S. comptroller general David Walker will speak about the current situation and he will provide insight on the financial calamity just around the corner if Congress and the president don’t act to get the debt under control. David M. Walker understands better than anyone else the looming threats to this nation’s future from mounting federal debt and entitlement programs. For a decade, Mr. Walker was the nation’s top auditor, alerting Congress to waste, fraud and abuse of tax dollars. As United States comptroller general under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, Mr. Walker repeatedly warned that out-of-control spending will burden future generations and will create opportunities for foreign powers to manipulate our economy. His early predictions came true so quickly that he was profiled in the documentary “I.O.U.S.A.”
Mr. Walker’s latest book, Comeback America: Turning the Country Around and Restoring Fiscal Responsibility, has been praised for its candid, nonpartisan assessment of what’s wrong with federal spending and what must be done about it.
On May 26, please join the Goldwater Institute as the nation’s top accountant, David M. Walker, offers an insider’s shocking perspective on the debt crisis facing America.

Here is the latest video of John McCain’s latest position on the illegal immigration. If you listen real closely, John McCain uses the word combinations “secure” and “border” eight times. Maybe he could have squeezed those words in four more times to make a dozen.
Another opportunity passed in which a reporter failed to ask John McCain if he supports or opposes SB 1070.
Democrats are running an ad targeting John McCain as a supporter of Arizona’s SB 1070. There’s only one problem with this ad. John McCain does NOT support SB 1070.
How long will it take before the Arizona Republic finally asks John McCain the direct question “Do you support SB 1070?” Paging Dan Nowicki. Paging Dan Nowicki…

LD5 GOP House Candidates File Petitions
Barton and Crandell on the ballot in LD5
The independently conservative Republican team of Brenda Barton and Chester Crandell have submitted their petition signatures to the Arizona Secretary of State, officially placing them on the ballot for the Republican nomination for State House of Representatives from LD5.
With both House seats open, Republicans in this vast district have a tremendous opportunity to capture a seat that has long been held by the Democrat Party. Much of that was due to the tremendous name id of longtime legislator Jack Brown who is now retiring. But the district’s voter registration has trended sharply towards the GOP over the last five years, making it increasingly difficult for any Democrat to hold the seat.
Republicans in LD5 have also been smart politically, placing just two Republicans on the ballot and preventing precious resources from being spent in a primary, thus allowing the various Republican county parties and clubs to focus on winning the general election.
Brenda Barton is a fifth generation Arizona native who has deep roots in the district. Her family established Lee’s Ferry on the Colorado River and Lee’s Valley in the White Mountains in the 1800s. Brenda has spent years working in the best interests of rural Arizona, from being elected as an officer for the land rights group, People for the West, to being a two-term past president of the Graham County Republican Women. In her own community of Safford, Mrs. Barton has served on numerous city-employee committees including one that wrote the Vision Statement for the city.
Chester Crandell has been working in the Arizona educational system for over 30 years. He taught Vocational Agriculture in Mesa before becoming an assistant principal in the Heber-Overgaard School District. He led the effort to establish the Northern Arizona Vocational Institute of Technology (NAVIT), and eventually became its Assistant Superintendent. In addition to his activities as an educator and an administrator, Mr. Crandell is also the owner of a small cattle ranch, and does training and test administration for Arizona Public Service.

Looks like Jeff Flake has a challenger!
For Immediate Release: Wednesday, May 5, 2010
Gilbert, AZ – Congressional district 6 candidate Jeff Smith today submitted nearly 1700 signatures to Secretary of State Ken Bennett from district voters who support his campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives.
“The voters of Congressional District 6 will have a real choice this August in the Republican primary,” Smith said. “It’s been 6 years since the voters have had a choice in the Republican primary. This year they can choose to send a true conservative to represent them – one who has real private sector experience and will fight against the progressive agenda of Washington D.C.”
Today’s signature submission exceeds the minimum required by nearly 60%. Smith said he expects to submit even more signatures prior to the May 26 filing deadline.
In case you missed it, Jeff Smith was also endorsed by Sheriff Joe Arpaio:
Gilbert, AZ – Congressional candidate Jeff Smith announced today that he has received the endorsement of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
“I am proud to endorse Jeff Smith for Congress in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. He offers the voters in that district a real choice this August in the Republican primary. He is a true conservative that will fight to defend our constitution, reduce the size and scope of government, secure our borders, and end illegal immigration,” said Arpaio.
Commenting on the endorsement, Jeff Smith stated “I’m honored to have Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s endorsement. He has been a leader, not only locally, but nationally, in the fight against illegal immigration. His tough policies on criminals have made us all safer across Maricopa County.”
Jeff Smith is a lifelong conservative running for office for the first time. He is known as a solid fiscal and social conservative.
“Today our constitution is under assault from dangerous progressive forces. I am committed to defending the constitution and the individual freedoms it guarantees. I am also committed to combating the rampant growth of government and its outrageous spending. Reinstating these conservative principles will provide the surest path to renewed job growth and economic prosperity for all Americans,” added Smith.
Jeff Smith is an independent stock and options investor with over 20 years of business experience in the Finance and Telecommunications industries. He earned his undergraduate degree in Economics from Brigham Young University and his Masters of Business Administration from the Goizueta Business School at Emory University. Jeff and his wife Camille have three children, all of whom attend Gilbert Public Schools. The Smiths are members of the LDS Church.
Has Rep. Harry Mitchell crossed the line? Members of Congress receive “franking” privileges which allow them to send out mail to their constituents paid for by us, the taxpayers. Check out his latest two mailers. They look like thinly disguised campaign pieces. If so, he has violated the law. Whatever the outcome, it is clear they look a lot like campaign brochures. Nice character, Harry.
John McCain at the 2008 National Council of La Raza Convention.
“At a moment of great difficulty in my campaign, when my critics said it would be political suicide for me to do so, I helped author with Senator Kennedy comprehensive immigration reform, and fought for its passage. I cast a lot of hard votes, as did the other Republicans and Democrats who joined our bipartisan effort. So did Senator Kennedy. I took my lumps for it without complaint. My campaign was written off as a lost cause. I did so not just because I believed it was the right thing to do for Hispanic Americans. It was the right thing to do for all Americans. Senator Obama declined t o cast some of those tough votes. He voted for and even sponsored amendments that were intended to kill the legislation, amendments that Senator Kennedy and I voted against. I never ask for any special privileges from anyone just for having done the right thing. Doing my duty to my country is its own reward. But I do ask for your trust that when I say, I remain committed to fair, practical and comprehensive immigration reform, I mean it. I think I have earned that trust.”

Last week, Governor Jan Brewer signed into law Senate Bill 1398, which mandates that local governments enforce their “coordination rights” against federal agencies. This new law enlists Arizona cities, counties and special districts in the fight against an overreaching federal government.
SB1398 leverages the fact that federal agencies are required by many federal laws to “coordinate” with local governments to ensure that new federal regulations will be enforced consistently with existing local laws. In other states, local governments have successfully used their coordination rights to block the introduction of wild horses into public and private lands, as well as to prevent new listings of endangered species. Despite these successes, most local governments simply do not exercise their coordination rights, perhaps for fear of upsetting federal agencies.
Now, whenever a new federal regulation clashes with a less restrictive local law, plan or policy, SB1398 requires Arizona cities, counties and special districts to demand that the responsible federal agency sit down at a bargaining table and make every reasonable effort to modify the federal regulation to become consistent with local priorities. If local governments ignore this obligation, ordinary citizens will have the power to compel their local elected officials to justify their inaction at a public hearing, guaranteeing local accountability.
But the effort to restore federalism does not end with the passage of SB1398. To stake out an initial bargaining position that will blunt one-size-fits-all federal regulations, local governments in Arizona need to start developing freedom-friendly land use policies before the need for coordination arises. Fortunately, the Goldwater Institute policy report “A New Charter for American Cities” shows how that can be done.

For almost three weeks now we’ve been hearing incessantly about the much-touted McCain-Kyl Border Action Plan.
Just one tiny problem, it’s not a bill yet, it is still being written.
I called Senator McCain’s office today to find out just where in the “legislative process” the plan stood. I was told that the plan is still being written and no one in the office knew when it would actually hit the floor of the Senate.
John McCain at his best. Another sound-byte, another commercial, another opportunity for John McCain to pontificate. But the bottom line, John McCain has again lied to the residents of Arizona. How do we know? Easy, the first word of the McCain-Kyl Plan is immediately.
Dictionary.com defines immediately as:
without lapse of time; without delay; instantly; at once.
Considering that the plan is still being drafted weeks after its announcement and subsequent ad campaign, the McCain-Kyl Border Action Plan is the latest glaring example of John McCain’s inability to accomplish anything of substance dealing with the overwhelming challenges facing the residents of Arizona.
Since it’s announcement, we’ve had a deputy shot in the desert, 67 illegals captured one day, 89 illegals captured another night and the stories continue ad nauseum. Thanks for nothing, Senator.
If you have somehow missed it, here is the plan.
• Immediately deploy 3,000 National Guard troops along the Arizona-Mexico border and add 3,000 Custom and Border Protection agents to the Arizona-Mexico border by 2015.
• Fund and support Operation Streamline in Arizona’s two Border Patrol sectors to ensure that repeat illegal border crossers go to jail for 15 to 60 days.
• Provide $100 million, an increase of $40 million, for Operation Stonegarden, a program that provides funds to Arizona's border law enforcement for additional costs related to illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
• Offer hardship-duty pay to Border Patrol agents assigned to rural, high trafficking areas.
• Complete the 700 miles of fencing along the U.S. border with Mexico and construct double- and triple-layer fencing at appropriate locations along the border. [Yeah right, that's gonna happen]
• Increase the 25 mobile surveillance systems and three Predator B aerial drones in place along the Arizona-Mexico border. Send additional fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters to the Arizona-Mexico border.
• Increase funding for vital radio communications and interoperability between agencies.
• Provide funding for additional Border Patrol stations in the Tucson Sector and explore the possibility of an additional Border Patrol sector for Arizona. Create six additional permanent Border Patrol forward operating bases, and provide funding to upgrade the existing bases to include modular buildings, electricity and potable water. Complete construction of the planned permanent checkpoint in Arizona. Deploy additional temporary roving checkpoints.
• Require the federal government to fully reimburse state and local governments for the costs of incarcerating criminal aliens.
• Place one full-time federal magistrate in Cochise County and provide full funding for and authorization of the Southwest Border Prosecution Initiative to reimburse state, county, tribal, and municipal governments for costs associated with the prosecution and pretrial detention of federally-initiated criminal cases declined by local offices of the U.S. attorneys.
Sounds like a really, really good plan, doesn’t it? Just remember though, they’re still writing it. Tick, tick, tick…..
The killing of Arizona Rancher Robert Krentz and the wounding of Pinal County Deputy Sheriff Lou Puroll, at the hands if illegal immigrants, has put a laser like focus on the reaction of Hispanic citizens who profess their rights are being violated by Arizona’s new law (the law does not take effect until July).
There is no doubt that there are those race exploiters who are taking advantage of the situation and inflaming passions. People like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Raul Grijalda, and President Obama come to mind. But, this is in keeping with the history, traditions, and practices of the progressive-socialist Democratic Party since its inception: the Democratic Party can never escape its racist heritage.
Hispanic writers like Ernest Portillo Jr, in the Arizona Daily Star (5/2/2010), quoted legal immigrants saying that the intensity of anti-immigrant sentiment is growing. The intensity of anti-illegal immigrant is growing but just about everyone I’ve talked to is very positively pro-immigration as long as you follow the rules. As Dennis Miller once said, “We don’t mind you visiting us, just sign the guest book.”
The biggest issue with those who disagree with the new law is that Hispanics will have to have identification to show law enforcement. If anyone is stopped by a law enforcement official for a violation of motor vehicle law, he or she has to provide a driver’s license. Federal law requires any foreigner to carry identification. Why are illegal Hispanic immigrants not protesting federal law? Ignorance and misinformation are the tools of the progressive-socialist radicals managing the protest.
If I write a check for groceries, the vendor always asks to see identification. I leased a sump pump from Home Depot the other day and was asked for my driver’s license and a credit card. What’s the big deal about showing identification?
The big deal is that illegal immigrants cannot show they are in the country legally. The big deal is Hispanics traditionally vote with Democrats even though, like Blacks, the Democratic Party, treats Hispanics badly. The Democratic Party would like nothing better than to have illegal immigrants voting Democratic. This was proven by the use of ACORN activists by the Democratic Party during the presidential election in numerous instances of fraud.
The Wall Street Journal article, “Killing Stokes Immigration Debate,”(5/2/2010) described a young 20 year community college student living in Mesa who was protesting the law because his family had been living illegally in Arizona for ten years. The student claimed his family will have to leave Arizona. Probably so, as he self-identified and admitted his family was here illegally. The student talked about moving to California or New Mexico. What he did not talk about was correcting the problem.
Hispanic immigrants who came to the United States legally have nothing to worry about. Only those Hispanic immigrants who came here illegally should be worried. Since there are anywhere from 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants in the United States, I’m not surprised that they are reacting.
The repeated failure of the federal government to secure our borders makes the federal government complicit and responsible for the death of Robert Krentz and the wounding of Deputy Sheriff Lou Puroll.
The Arizona law mirrors federal law. Why didn’t Hispanic activists react to the federal law? Primarily because the federal government did not enforce it. Arizona intends to enforce the law: thus, the reaction primarily by radical progressive-socialists and illegal immigrants.
President Obama has called the Arizona law misguided. Does he also call the federal law misguided? Is this why his administration refuses to enforce it? Then, again, Mr. Obama has an aunt living in this country illegally.
American citizens of Hispanic descent have started voicing their disapproval of the race exploitative reaction to the law by illegal immigrants and progressive-socialist radicals. They or their ancestors came to the United States legally and they think illegal immigrants should follow the same rules. My mother immigrated to the United States over sixty years ago. My wife immigrated to the United States over forty years ago. They followed the rules. So must Hispanic immigrants in this country illegally.
There are two Hispanic communities in this country: the legal community and the illegal community. The legal Hispanic community must not allow itself to be emotionally swept up by race exploiters.
As Americans, we must stand for border security and promote legal immigration. As Americans, we cannot tolerate murders or shootings of innocent people by illegal immigrants. As Americans, we must eliminate the illegal immigrant issue, thoughtfully and legally. The Arizona law is a sensible first step in the process.
