Treasurer Dean Martin: “Goddard & Brewer’s plan ‘Tax and Spending to Prosperity’ will not work”
“Quit Playing Games with our Kids & Protect our Economy, Pass a Fear Free Budget”
State Treasurer Dean Martin criticized Terry Goddard’s belated support for a Prop 100 sales tax increase today. “No jobs, just tax increases is the only plan coming from the Governor & Attorney General these days and it should be rejected.”
Treasurer Dean Martin said, “This administration has repeatedly used scare tactics to try and pass this tax increase. Teachers and students should never have been put at risk to help motivate passage of this tax proposal. The economy is very weak, and a tax increase will hamper any economic recovery. Targeting education cuts to motivate voters is outrageous and will not stand. If Prop 100 fails the Governor and legislature will be forced to come back into special session and pass a reasonable, “fear free” budget.”
“We need an energetic new Governor with new ideas. Recently, I outlined a modernization plan for our state Medicaid program that can save the taxpayers over $1 billion a year, as well as a debt restructuring proposal that uses historic low interest rates to save taxpayers an additional $1.4 billion.” Martin continued, “I have a plan that could bring the state’s budget into balance without a historic tax increase, and allow this state to pass a very much needed Jobs Recovery package. We can protect teachers and classrooms without a tax increase and without sacrificing jobs.”
“Terry Goddard has offered few ideas of how to reform state government finances during this crisis, it is not surprising that he would support a taxpayer bailout to prop up unsustainable spending levels,” Martin said.
Martin continued, “The problem with Goddard’s contingent support of Prop 100, which he threatened to withhold if a Jobs Recovery package moved forward in the Legislature, is that he has offered no specific ideas on how we will replace the 300,000 plus jobs that have been lost since the recession began.”
“What’s worse is that Governor Jan Brewer took the bait and killed any efforts to for a Jobs Recovery package to pass this year. She chose a so called ‘temporary’ tax increase over creating new jobs. Creating jobs should have been the priority, it is a better and more permanent solution to this economic crisis.” Treasurer Dean Martin continued, “It’s one thing to take pot shots at business tax relief to make our state more competitive, but they have no real solutions to help the small business entrepreneur. How do they propose we get the roughly 10% of our citizens back to work? Their only solution seems to be continued deficit spending and protecting a bloated government bureaucracy.”
Treasurer Dean Martin continued, “We need a Governor who understands that Government needs to make the same kinds of belt tightening measures that all households have during this crisis. Since this recession began State spending has actually INCREASED by $300 million.”
Treasurer Dean Martin created AZCheckbook.com so citizens could see the waste and overspending in government through a complete and transparent view of how the state collects and spends your money. ”

Dean Martin should drop out of the Governor’s race and run in
CD-3. He would easily win the primary, and make a great Congressman.
Dean Martin is not going to win the Gubernatorial primary (he’ll lose 2 to 1), and from what I’ve heard, he’s not even going to be able to gather enough $5 qualifying contributions anyway.
Dean should jump in CD-3 and become a Congressman AZ can be proud of.
Oh well Brian Vista, how come I am not surprised?
Meaning that in reference to your second paragraph.
Then, on your first paragraph Line two I admit you lost me.
Oh yeah, Dean Martin. I forgot he was running for Governor.
Who wrote this awful thing. I thought press releases were supposed to be short and to the point, not a novel. Not to mention this thing is all over the place, this gaffney guy must have 20 cups of coffee when he wrote this.
Agree with C2theCore – I lost interest halfway through this “Press Release.” What paper is going to waste that much ink on a campaign ad, anyway?
Also, is Martin still running for Governor? I thought, perhaps, he had moved out of the state or been transported to an alternate universe. Where I’m from, if you want to campaign, you have to been seen. I’m just not sure his once-every-six-weeks appearance schedule will bring him a victory…
Dean Martin voted to increase the state budget under Janet from $6.2 billion to $8.9 billion when he was in the Legislature – a 43% increase in just four years!
It’s ironic that he now thinks we spend too much. Too bad he did not think that back when he was sponsoring unsustainable budget-busting bills.
Dean Martin lost my support when he nominated a pro-choice Wish List supporter, Lori Klien, for the state senate from LD 6.
Dean Martin, and the Gov’s staffer Tim Bee were the crafters of the budgets Janet “what’s her face” demanded. They would not stand up for us, and caved in to her demands. Has anybody seen any spare backbone. Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore.
VOTE NO ON PROP 100 !!!!
The Mcbloggers-4-Jan-Brewer crowd is out in full force today. Perhaps that’s because Martin polls better than Brewer against the “official” democrat candidate.
I want Dean Martin to run his campaign with more energy and win, but I see he’s still working his job. I saw the new treasury website showing the state accounting system in real-time and I’m impressed.
Jan Brewer’s video ad about Martins voting record is b-o-g-u-s which is where these comments about Dean Martin and budget increases are coming from. The glaring yellow flag from Brewer’s video: Martin was not in the Senate for four fiscal years while Nappy was governor. Another glaring yellow flag: he did not vote 70 times for Janet Napolitano’s budget increases. In fact, I found Dean Martin has spent more years challenging spending than voting for it. Frankly, I voted to increase my household budget by the same percentage in a four year period…as the family grew! In other words, increasing a budget for legitimate reasons is not heresy. The crime is when governors want tax increases to please special interest groups and hide spending in support of illegal immigration and a dysfunctional school system.
Roads, public property, and public safety get the scraps after liberals and rinos overspend everywhere else. They should be sacrosanct expenditures but they’re annually held out as bait for tax increases. Jan Brewer has some nerve going on the attack about budget increases. I don’t trust Brewer to remain consistent for four more years, and Buzz Mills and Terry Goddard are completely unacceptable: get them out of here.
Give it a rest. Martin has never ever voted for a tax hike. And he has never had less than great ratings from taxpayer groups. I know its an election year, but brewer flunkies on here are too much.
Btw, vote no on 100
Hey Jan Brewer forces – Get a Job!
Jan Brewer and Janet Nappy both increased spending using the line item veto! Why don’t you read one of those budgets before you try to “enlighten” us.
Martin sponsored an end to the marraige tax penalty, an end to the death tax and the across-the-board 10% tax cut! He also WROTE Prop 300 putting an end to illegal aliens receiving the in-state tuuition taxpayer subsidy.
Martin is the ONLY Republican Gov. candidate to poll ahead of both Brewer and Goddard since he announced in January. In addition to performing very admirably in the State Treasurer’s office, Martin is campaigning all over the state.
Mainstream media is going to be no help to a real conservative like Martin – of course they’re great for the tax increasing Brewer -big surprise.
Jan Brewer is Nappy’s parrot…”It’s for the children.” Her campaign manager is Grant Woods, another Nappy parrot…”It requires a federal solution.”
PS
Horst Kraus is a character witness for a child mollester. The guy is behind bars now, no thanks to Kraus.
Dean’s a good guy.
Dean Martin is our only chance of winning the governorship in November. Even Sarah Palin knows it. She has spent the last week endorsing everybody under the sun, but when she came to AZ she did a joint appearance with Brewer and … NOTHING!
The reason is Jan supports a BILLION $$$ TAX HIKE.
For me that is just as bad as being soft on the border.
Luckily Dean is tough on the border and against tax hikes. Plus he is the only one who can win.
Martin opposed 100. I am voting for him because he is the fiscal conservative in this race. Mills seems like a good enough guy, but i don’t think he will be able to withstand the scrutiny of his business deals. Martin is the only candidate who can beat brewer. Go Dean!
So, exactly how is someone who called Clean Elections “welfare for politicians” and was even a named plaintiff in the Goldwater Institute’s lawsuit against the regime still qualified to be called a conservative when he immediately flip-flops and takes taxpayer money to run his campaign?
Oops, that’s right, he still hasn’t qualified and we’re already in the second-half of May. You would think that someone in public service for so long would be able to garner at least a minimum degree of support for his race.
The Governor is just as bad, too. Stop taking our money to run for office Jan and Dean!
Dean Martin wants to keep our taxes low, which is more than I can say for our governor. Vote No on Prop 100 and vote for Dean.
Cactus Jack:
One might add that our present governor never fails to assert her “fiscal” conservatism also.
Yet a look at her record since taking up residence on the 9th floor is rather more revealing.
To begin with, she picked a fight with her own party’s leadership in the legislature who wanted to balance the budget without raising taxes.
When they did so, she vetoed all the spending cuts which were necessary to avoid tax increases.
So much for “small government” from the GOP elitist crowd.
One would think that she now relies on cross-over McCainiac staffers!
I detest Brewer for her attempt to jack up taxes, and plan to vote against her in the primary, but I can’t ignore the reality that the race has turned on immigration, and she does get respect from me for voting for SB 1070.
I plan to vote against Brewer in the primary, but I see the writing on the wall. Buz Mills split the vote up against Brewer. It’s hard enough to knock off an incumbent in a primary, when you have two big names cannibalizing each other, it’s impossible.
I hate to see someone as good as Dean Martin fade away in a primary he simply can’t win (nor even qualify for funding).
If I were Dean Martin, being a respected Congressman would be a heck of a consolation prize. He would easily flatten Ben Quayle in CD-3. He has an enormous amount of goodwill from the conservative base.
Martin is our best chance to beat brewer and goddard. It frustrates me when so many people forget who the REAL conservative in this reace is.
Mills is toast with his fraud conviction. The person to beat Brewer and Goddard is Martin. No matter how Prop 100 ends up Brewer is toast. If it passes she will be crucified in the primary by conservatives. It if fails she will get killed in the general. Prop 100 is a millstone around Brewer’s neck. She should have accepted the legislature’s budget and moved on rather than using line item vetoes to spend more (killed cuts) and tax more (bring back state equalization property tax).
I’m going to cut to the chase.
The last three women who ran this state, Jane, Janet and “Jan” have sunk it financially. The only decent thing “Jan” has done was sign 1070 and the bill to stop state funding for ethnic studies. And oh yes, I’ll give her credit for not renewing the Big Brother cameras on our highways.
That said, it’s time for a man with a SOLID record to run the State for once and get our budget back to rational levels. Step aside ladies, let Martin do his job. And quit siding with the libs with the scare tactics and threatening to raise our taxes already.
Looks like Jan is toast in the primary with Prop 100 heading to a victory in light turnout.
Here’s the skinny wnd anyone is welcome to try and dispute it.
Dean Martin can never claim cred for being a purer conservative. He voted for Nappy budgets and even sponsored them. Cant claim to be a visionary if you participated in the activity that got us here.
Munger will never gain enough traction and will never have the money to compete against Brewer.
Mills is a fraud. The voters will never elect a Governor who is dishonest and screwed a business partner.
Say whatever you want about Prop 100- the margin is too much to overcome. That victory required republicans to vote in large numbers. Those same Republicans will be voting in the Primary.
In your dreams “It’s Brewer”. It’s going to be tough working on her campaign staff when P100 just handed Martin the club to beat Brewer over the head with.
@It’s Brewer – sad sad sad. Go back to school and do your hw!
Have you looked at what Janet line-item vetoed that raised spending long after Martin may have voted for it??
Munger – going nowhere, Mills – fraud businessman (but nice videos, money pays…), Brewer – tax-hiking RHINO.
You really are going to claim that Napolitano line item vetoed budgets causing $4 billion in increased spending?
You are insulting the precious few others who are with you in voting for Dean. Good luck with that.
Jan’s line items vetoes returned the state property tax to life t the tune of +$300M and added back in sending of +$400M. Sounds like a RINO to me.
Way to dodge the question above.
Case closed.
There seems to be a reading problem on SA. First todd then “It’s brewer” unless, that is, they are one and the same. Kindly point to a post of mine where I said Nappy used line item vetoes to increase spending by $4B. There is no question to duck because you refer to comments I never made.
I hadn’t realized SA’s RINO bloggers were so poor at political give and take. Are you related to Blumenthal who can’t remember if he was in Vietnam or not?
Where was Brewer when Napolitano increased spending? Where was Buz? Where was Munger? They didn’t seem interested in fighting the out of control spending then.
