Kelly overwhelmingly wins Thursday’s debate

Jesse Kelly

For Immediate Release: February 12, 2010

Kelly overwhelmingly wins Thursday’s debate.

ORO VALLEY, AZ. The audience at last night’s CD 8 Republican debate overwhelmingly voted for Jesse Kelly at the end of the event. Jesse clearly separated himself from the field, receiving over 51% of the votes. In a distant second place, state Senator Jonathan Paton received only 20% of the votes. All four candidates appeared before a packed house of over 500 voters.

“All the hard work is paying off. The voters are clearly responding to my message of limited government, spending reductions, and free-market reforms to increase employment. I would like to thank the many volunteers who help make this a winning campaign,” stated Jesse after hearing the results from the audience vote.

Jesse would like to thank all those who attended as well as the sponsors of the event: Northwest Republicans, Tucson Tea Party, Smart Girl Politics, and LD 26 Republican Committee.

Jesse Kelly is a candidate for Arizona’s Eighth Congressional District in the southeastern region of the state. For more information on the Jesse Kelly campaign please visit VoteJesseKelly.com.

EJ Montini – Pick your own prosecutor? Really?

A m e r i c a n P o s t – G a z e t t e

Distributed by C O M M O N S E N S E , in Arizona

Thursday, February 11, 2010

Pick your own prosecutor? Really?

Ask yourself this question, and be honest.

If you were in legal trouble, facing fines and jail time, and you had the opportunity to pick the attorney who would prosecute your case would you do so in a “fair and appropriate” manner? Me neither.

This makes what Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox told the Republic hysterically funny.

It has to do with Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, who may run for state Attorney General . If he does so, Thomas would have to resign his job. His replacement would be named by the Board of Supervisors. Since Thomas is prosecuting two of those supervisors, he would prefer a less personally-interested group of people make the selection.

It’s a good point.

But so far, supervisors are blowing him off. Wilcox went so far as to tell a Republic reporter – apparently with a straight face: “Mr. Thomas, thank you for your thoughts, but we will conduct ourselves in a fair and appropriate manner.”

Yeah, right.

We can argue all we want over whether Thomas’ prosecution of the supervisors is politically motivated. Even if you believe that to be true, however, letting these particular chickens pick the fox that will enter their hen house is a joke.

Legal or not.

And it says something (not good) about their ethics.

Palling Around with Democrats Gets Us Bigger Government, Less Choices

McCain Dorgan

MCCAIN AGAIN COMMITS TO BIG GOVERNMENT, ELIMINATING CONSUMER CHOICE

PHOENIX, ARIZONA. FEBRUARY 12, 2010. Renewing his commitment to big government in the face of growing skepticism about Washington’s expanding powers, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) introduced legislation last week to further regulate vitamins and supplements. His partnership with U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota) follows other liberal efforts with Joseph Lieberman on global warming, Ted Kennedy on amnesty and Russ Feingold on First Amendment regulations, recently overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Dietary Supplement Safety Act (DSSA) of 2010 (S.3002), introduced by Sen. McCain and co-sponsored by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND), seeks to regulate all dietary supplements.

The introduction of this legislation does not come in the face of health and safety concerns, but rather is an apparent response to athletes’ use of over-the-counter supplements as performance enhancers.

“Use of vitamins and supplements should not be regulated simply because a few athletes want to redirect attention from their doping,” said U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Hayworth.

Americans across the country would likely see a rise in prices and a decrease in availability of vitamins and supplements with the passage of this bill, as supplement manufacturers would be subject to excessive reporting requirements and broad recall authority by the FDA.

This bill is yet more “bipartisan” legislation by the 24-year incumbent that panders to those interested in increasing the size and scope of the federal government. Senator McCain voted for the massive bank bailout bill in 2008, which included $150billion in earmarks. During his presidential run he proposed spending $300 billion to buy up every bad mortgage in America, again bailing out banks and borrowers. And according to the Heritage Foundation his support for amnesty legislation would have cost taxpayers $2.6trillion.

Why did ATR’s Grover Norquist abandon conservatives?

Grover Norquist-McCainConservatives in Arizona and across the states were left shaking their heads in doubt when Grover Norquist, head of the vaunted Americans for Tax Reform, announced he was backing John McCain’s re-election bid for the U.S. Senate. While most observers assume McCain would garner much of the Beltway/establishment endorsements, Grover has (like McCain) tried for years to fashion himself something of a maverick, seemingly putting principles ahead of party when push came to shove. Were he defending some newly revealed transgression of, say, Ronald Reagan’s, we’d likely give Grover the benefit of the doubt while rushing to defend the Gipper ourselves. But, Grover, we knew Reagan. Reagan was a friend of ours. And John McCain is no Ronald Reagan.

What makes the Grover-McCain endorsement so strange is that it was painfully obvious Grover clearly didn’t entirely believe what he was saying when he said it. On this Tuesday past, Norquist (calling into Mike Broomhead’s show) explained his rationale, saying he supported McCain’s signing of ATR’s pledge, opposition to federal earmarks, and that McCain “consistently votes against tax increases and for spending restraint.”

Here are the problems: McCain’s opponent in the primary, J.D. Hayworth, has also signed the ATR Pledge (and faithfully kept it while serving in Congress). While McCain is a vocal critic of earmarks, just last year he voted for $180 billion in earmarks (by comparison: the annual General Fund budget for the entire state of Arizona is approximately $10 billion). And as for voting against tax increases and for spending restraint, John McCain was the Republican “maverick” who voted AGAINST the Bush tax-relief bills of both 2001 and 2003 (these are the same tax relief packages we hear so much about today that, if Congress lets them expire could cost American small businesses millions of additional jobs).

As for Mr. Hayworth, it is noteworthy to add that as the only Arizona member of Congress on the tax policy Ways and Means Committee, he helped draft the 2001 and 2003 tax relief acts. Senator McCain called these bills tax cuts for the wealthy, but in reality they reduced taxes for low-income earners from 15% to a new, low 10% tax bracket. They eliminated the marriage penalty. They dramatically increased the child tax credit. They reduced taxes on dividend investment income and capital gains. And, of course, they provided for sunsetting the federal death tax this very year: 2010. Of course, John McCain voted against these important, landmark tax relief measures and now the Congress in which he serves is determined to undo it all.

Why Grover Norquist believes John McCain, who spends hundreds of billions bailing out banks, tries to spend hundreds of billions more trying to bailout crooked mortgages, and on top of it all, wants to spend over $2 Trillion to finance the retirement plans of illegal immigrants, is the right man for the job, is beyond us. Unless it’s just another case of the Washington establishment taking care of their own once again.

At least Bill Bennett was more honest: “Hayworth’s views, if you put them both on paper, are probably closer to my own, but I gotta support John McCain because he’s the man.” Google Bennett and listen to a clip of the 30-second endorsement. It’s the least enthusiastic endorsement ever recorded, suggesting he was paying back a debt owed or, even possibly, he or a member of his family was being held hostage at the time of the taping.

Final thoughts… It’s very early in this campaign. J.D. has not even announced yet. In fact, John McCain was running attack ads against J.D. (on J.D.’s own radio show) even before J.D. began to make plans about the race. Said one PC at last night’s LD21 meeting, “Why couldn’t McCain have run like this against Obama?” The point’s a good one. The McCain folks have frequently proven their willingness to attack fellow Republicans, whether on in the Senate during amnesty debates or here in Arizona in, well, any debate. At this rate, it’s unlikely here in Arizona he’ll be starting every other sentence during the present campaign with the phrase “My friends…”

As for Grover, he may come to find on August 24th that principles still matter most… now more than ever.

Nuclear Iran

Iran announces today that they are a nuclear nation.

Total FAIL for the Obama Administration.

Obama spoke on numerous times during the campaign about his goal to REDUCE nuclear weapons. Evidently, he meant only evicerating America’s defenses while Iran is on full speed to OFFENSIVE weapons manufacturing.

Iran has long publicized its intention to wipe Israel off the map. It is now a critical step closer. It has already been launching missles and rockets to gain experience in developing a reliable nuclear weapon delivery system. We only know what they’ve told us, they are certainly NOT telling us everything, but what we know is suffiicent:  they are poised to put it all together for the purpose of exporting mass destruction.

Iran is a well-educated, modern, and oil-prosperous society with a brutal and idealogically-driven regime that is staying in power solely by raw, lethal force against its own people. Today’s internet is full of videos of the Iranian people being beaten today for the crime of demanding freedom from tyranny.  We don’t need even today’s raw footage of the clubbings in Tehran to know the character of the brutal men in charge of the radical Revolutionary Iranian Regime; during the Iraq-Iran War, the mullahs gave children a piece of Koranic scripture, promised them a place in heaven and pushed them across fields ahead of the troops … to clear the landmines.   What worse can we expect if they treat their citizens that way, while they consider us, “The Great Satan?”

So, evidently it isn’t scattered global strikes today, but the achievement of a Revolutionary Iranian Regime military objective that guarantees total WAR, and soon.

Why war?   And why soon? The threat of nuclear destruction is so serious that Iran’s neighbors cannot hold or they will be effectively held hostage or forced to capitulate the moment Iran can deliver a bomb to Cairo, Baghdad, Tel Aviv, Amman, Ankara, Kabul, New Delhi, Rome. Any American troops in Iraq would be in harm’s way. America could easily be blackmailed by a threat of nuclear strike to pull out all troops, leaving newly Democratic Iraq at the mercy of their neighbor and arch enemy, Iran.

But not to worry, the Democratic Party has assured us we are ‘post-war’ and no longer require a military capable of defending America, nor do we  require a functioning missile shield. As Rep Kirkpatrick (D) said, representing the Democratic Majority Party Congress and the Democratic Party Controlled Administration’s policy:

“Our military will have to make due with less.”

As if the military’s purpose to provide national security was at the same strategic level of multimillionaire Nancy Pelosi’s U.S. Taxpayer funded jet, which she needs more than our troops need support, the U.S. government owning General Motors, which the White House needs more than reinforcing our troops, nationalizing student college loans which is more important than enhancing our intelligence capabilities – despite the debacle of the Christmas bombing attempt,  TARP bailouts, massage parlors, schools buying iPODs with stimulus funds, all of which trump national security issues as recipients of taxpayer-derived funds.

So, after tripling national debt, into beyond the next generation, then raising the debt ceiling so they can keep spending on everything BUT our military, the Democratic Party in the White House and the Congress insists that Americans will have to make due with LESS SECURITY.

“Belt-tightening,” Obama intones weekly, “Everyone has to sacrifice.”

They need the money for Democratic Party national priorities like buying up $50 million beaches in the Virgin Islands.

JD Hayworth Rocks the House in LD 21

Here’s a brief video clip of JD Hayworth’s closing remarks at the Legislative District 21 Republican meeting last night. This was the second of two standing ovations he received when he spoke to the party faithful.

This ought to send a shiver through the McCain camp as they watch one appearance after another generate such great response.

After JD had spoke, Mayor Boyd Dunn attempted to salvage any credibility John McCain had left with these precinct committeemen.

Standing In The Breach

img-badge-blue-125x125

A member of President Reagan’s cabinet has come out in full support of John McCain’s re-election.  Former Education Secretary William Bennett, now a nationwide syndicated talk show host, said on his show:

Hayworth’s views, if you put them both on paper, probably are closer to my views, but I gotta support McCain ’cause he’s the man,” Bennett said on his “Morning in America” radio show. “He’s the man who stands in the breach. He stood in the breach in Iraq, would rather lose the election than the war. He’s the only guy who really stood up last week, that I noticed, probably a couple of others, on this ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ (debate). And he would want my support — and he would ask for it, I believe — and he’s going to get it.”

Bill Bennett has been a consistent voice of common sense fiscal and social conservatism for two decades, he understands the skill-set required to be effective in the Senate, and clearly believes John McCain is a crucial voice.

This comes at the same time fiscal conservative and taxpayer watchdog Grover Norquist endorsed McCain, going so far as to say on Mike Broomhead’s show:

He (Hayworth) needs to make the case, that at a time when Tea Party activists and conservative activists and Republican regulars are being asked to raise tens of millions of dollars to win Senate seats in Delaware and North Dakota and Massachusetts, for crying out loud, why should we be asked to split up our time, energy and money to replace a perfectly good, in working condition Republican who consistently votes against tax increases and for spending restraint.”

When it comes down to results over rhetoric, Senator John McCain is, as Sec. Bennet said, “the man“.

Scottsdale and Tempe don’t need higher hotel taxes

by Byron Schlomach, Ph.D.
Goldwater Institute

On March 9, Scottsdale and Tempe voters will decide whether to approve a two percentage point increase in their cities’ tax on hotel room rentals. In both cities, hotel associations seem united in support of the measures. The Surprise city council already approved its own bed tax increase earlier this month. It, too, was supported by the city’s hotel association.

Why would some hotels support taxing themselves? Many hoteliers hope to see the increased tax revenue used to lure more tourism to the state. That’s a long shot. Over time, travelers will find more affordable places to visit. The tax increase contemplated by Scottsdale and Tempe will make their hotel tax higher than those of Las Vegas, Palm Beach, and San Diego. It’s small comfort to know that large Texas cities have higher hotel taxes when that state has no income tax. In the long run, this tax strategy will strangle the goose that laid the tourism golden egg by making Arizona cities less competitive.

Only half of the new taxes will definitely go to tourism promotion. The rest could fund transit, public art, golf venues and in Scottsdale, an equestrian center. Both Scottsdale and Tempe are ignoring the common sense option of scaling back or selling off these luxury activities to bring government spending in line with revenue, avoiding any new taxes.

To revive tourism at a time when people are weighing their vacation options carefully, cities should consider reducing taxes on lodging altogether. That’ll send an inviting message to travelers and conventioneers that Scottsdale and Tempe welcome their business, and Arizona is ready to compete for visitor dollars.

YS reports GOP bookkeeping troubles

This afternoon’s Yellow Sheet had this story:

MORE PROBLEMS WITH GOP BOOKKEEPING, SAY SOURCES

Two Republicans claiming knowledge of the Arizona Republican Party’s finances say the party’s year-end federal campaign finance report is a sham that greatly exaggerated available cash on hand. The report, filed last month, claims the party’s federal account held $65,000 at the end of 2009, but the sources said the real figure was closer to several thousand dollars. YS made several attempts to reach Pullen for comment and requested to view the party’s banking statements, but calls on the subject matter were not returned. State GOP Director Brett Mecum said: “If a Republican has a problem with the state party showing what we have on hand, it would be nice if they actually picked up the phone and called the office and maybe talked to some of us over here. They should take it up with the party and not the press.”

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the committee held less than $5,000 in late December. One of the sources said they pulled a sleuth move and called the party’s bank (M & I Thunderbird) in late December to ask if the federal account balance could cover a (non-existent) $5,000 check. The inquiry, said the source, prompted the bank to respond in the negative. “The guy (Pullen) is the treasurer of the RNC and his books are a joke,” said the source. “Their entire reporting system is riddled with fraud.” The second insider who contacted YS said the party’s federal account funds were “not anywhere close” to $65,000. A more accurate figure by the end of 2009 would be roughly $3,000, said the Republican. Mecum said the party has “multiple bank accounts so it’d be interesting” to see which account was tested with the fund verification test. SOS records show the in-state account for the party reported $10,600 cash on hand at the end of 2009.

Would Brett Mecum really provide the bank statements if asked?  What does he mean by ”take it up with the party”?  That happened and those folks were dismissed.  The questions linger and suspicion is not easily dissuaded with avoidance.

It is time for Mr. Pullen and Mr. Mecum to provide a full accounting of each account, money in and money out with dates to match.  No accrual accounting, without the date of transactions, the real story.

Avoidance of disclosure and facts and repeatedly distracting the focus from obtaining answers to blaming the one with the questions are not signs of a willingness for transparency.  Hey guys, it isn’t your money.  It isn’t your party.  And we aren’t idiots.

Paton: Giffords Voted for a Room With a View

Jonathan Paton

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Giffords voted for $50 million appropriation for beach front property in Virgin Islands

GabriellIe Giffords voted with Democrats last month to spend $50 million to buy beach front property in the Virgin Islands, an excessive waste of U.S. taxpayer dollars, Jonathan Paton said today.

“Gabrielle Giffords’ continued disregard for our tax dollars is outrageous,” Paton said. “The nation is nearly $13 trillion in debt, and she continues to spend on these wasteful projects that have no benefit for the American people or residents in Southern Arizona.”

Fox News reports that a huge Democratic majority approved the purchase of 3,000 acres in the Caribbean, in hopes of turning it into a national park. But the National Park Service hasn’t even completed a study of the land and most Americans will never even see the park.

If it opens, the park will costs another $1 million a year to maintain, according to a Congressional Budget Office estimate.

“Maybe Nancy Pelosi, Gabrielle Giffords and company are planning to fly to the island on the taxpayer dime like they did to Copenhagen, but most Americans will never see this pricey park,” Paton said. “With such a blatant record of supporting wasteful spending, Rep. Giffords will be held accountable this year. Touting phony ‘pay-as-you-go’ legislation means nothing if she can’t stand up to Nancy Pelosi and say ‘no’ to this kind of pork barrel spending.”

All but four House Democrats voted for the $50 million appropriation. Here is the roll call vote: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2010/roll023.xml

Representative Frank Antenori’s Statement on passage of amendment to SB1002

State Seal

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, February 10, 2010

“The Legislature must take a two-pronged approach to our economic crisis. We must fix the current budget deficit and create more jobs.

With the State taking on more debt, job creation is critical to generate revenues to offset it. We now have a great opportunity for the Senate to move on one of the most important pieces of legislation before us and move to grow our economy now. HB2250 does exactly that, which is why I offered my amendment to SB1002 to make the education rollover conditional upon the Economic and Job Recovery Bill becoming law.

The amendment received full support from a sizeable majority of all Republicans present on the Floor — clearly highlighting how important House Republicans see HB2250 in growing our economy and bringing revenue back in alignment with debt.”
