Mr. President, public universities are no example of effective subsides

By Matthew Ladner, Ph.D.
Goldwater Institute

President Obama made the following statement during his recent health care address:

It would also keep pressure on private insurers to keep their policies affordable and treat their customers better, the same way public colleges and universities provide additional choice and competition to students without in any way inhibiting a vibrant system of private colleges and universities.

I almost fell out of my chair. Universities and health care share a common problem–massive subsidies. Both are suffering from runaway costs that have increased far beyond the rate of inflation. If public universities are keeping private universities in check, someone forgot to tell the private universities. Their costs have been rising even faster than health care for decades.

Congress has been chasing its tail on “college affordability”–providing increasing subsidies, watching costs go up, and repeating the process. The same is true of health care. Through Medicare, Medicaid, and the tax treatment of employee benefits, Congress has thrown more and more tax dollars at health care only to watch cost inflation spiral out of control.

As far as a “public option” to help keep health care costs down, the President might have a good deal more credibility if Medicare and Medicaid costs hadn’t spiraled out of control. Call me crazy, but I’d like to see the slightest bit of evidence that costs in these already unaffordable programs can be controlled before starting a new one.

Adam Armer Launches Exploratory Committee

Mesa resident Adam Armer is testing the waters for another bid at the House in Legislative District 22. Armer, a conservative Republican ran for one of the House seats in 2008 but was overcome in the Primary Election. This time, should he enter the race in 2010, current State Representative Andy Biggs will be term-limited out leaving a seat open once again. The other seat is currently filled by Laurin Hendrix who will likely be seeking a second term.

I sat down with Adam today to discuss the race and his position on issues and I was very impressed. His family faces the same challenges as most families in the current economy but Adam has managed to be creative in his entrepreneurial spirit. I can tell you that he is a small businessman with a growing family who has a passion for the fiscal responsibility, protecting small businesses and strengthening the family. Having been involved in East Valley politics, he will be a very serious candidate in 2010.

He is likely to run as a traditional candidate which means he is counting on your donations. If you have a desire to see young conservatives be elected, contact Adam Armer to see how you can help.

Parker Scheduled to Make Major Announcement

Politics on the Rocks is reporting that Mayor Vernon Parker will be speaking at the next networking event on Wednesday, September 23rd. At that meeting, Parker is rumored to be making a major announcement.

If Parker announces his candidacy for Governor, he will be the first of the first-tiered candidates to do so. Several 2nd and 3rd-tiered candidates have already announced.

The event will be held at the Montelucia Resort & Spa in Paradise Valley and will begin at 5:30 PM. Politico Mafioso is carrying the announcement and RSVP’s are being taken via evite (click here).

PR: Parker Joins Arpaio to Award High School Diplomas to Juveniles

Here is the latest press release from Sheriff Joe Arpaio regarding high school diplomas to juvenile-aged offenders:

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, INMATES AWARDED TRADITIONAL HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMAS INSIDE SHERIFF’S JAIL

For Immediate Release: September 14, 2009

(Phoenix, AZ.) Six juveniles, all of whom broke the law thereby losing their freedom and their chance to graduate with their high school classmates, will at least be awarded true high school diplomas tomorrow in an 11:30 a.m. ceremony in the Lower Buckeye Jail.

This is the first time in the history of Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s “Hard Knocks High School,” the only high school inside an American jail, that inmates will actually get a true and traditional high school diploma rather than receiving their GEDs.

Unlike the GED program, a traditional diploma would allow those inmates/students to apply directly to a major university rather than go to a community college for higher education once their jail sentences are served.

The high school diplomas are being awarded to six male inmates tomorrow, four of whom are incarcerated for armed robbery and two for aggravated assault, because they completed what is known as a “virtual high school curriculum” via the internet, Arpaio says.

“We’re always looking for ways we can help inmates who want to help themselves,” Arpaio says. “These inmates volunteered to do the tough work in this tough jail environment, to stay on par with the classmates they left behind and we are very proud of their achievements.”

EdOptions Foundation, the corporation which provides and supports lifelong learning, is working in concert with the Sheriff’s office to provide inmates with internet based classroom delivery.

Dr. David Reed, EdOptions’ Director of Research and program manager for the MCSO project, said about the high school graduates, “These individuals have met rigorous state requirements, met or exceeded AIMS testing, and completed stringent academic requirements for graduation – it is truly an accomplishment to be proud of.”

Dr. Tom Sawner, CEO of Educational Options, Inc. said, “The Foundation is proud to support and be a part of this program and delighted that through EdOptions High School six uniquely qualified students graduated from high school and earned their diploma. This will allow these students an opportunity to transition into mainstream society and to continue in advanced educational programs.”

The inmates will wear the traditional cap and gown and be awarded their certificates before friends and family tomorrow at the Lower Buckeye Jail starting at 11:30AM. Sheriff Joe Arpaio will be joined by Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker, a staunch believer in higher education for youths.

Media is encouraged to attend and meet these young men. Please contact the on call Media Relations Officer for entrance into the medium security facility of Lower Buckeye Jail located at 35th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Roads.

PR: Arizona Hispanic Republicans Launch New GOP Group

Arizona Hispanic Republicans Launch New GOP Group

For Immediate Release Tuesday, September 15, 2009
Contact: Communications, info@somosrepublicans.com

Phoenix, AZ — On the eve of Mexican Independence Day and Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to announce the launch of Somos Republicans - a grassroots Hispanic GOP organization in Arizona.

Our mission and goals are simple: Increase Hispanic GOP voter registration; Recruit Hispanic Precinct Committeemen; Promote Hispanic GOP candidates; and get more Republicans involved and elected to office.

For far too long, Hispanic Republicans have been neglected and taken for granted. Somos Republicans has something to say: ?We are Conservative in our beliefs and we will be active in politics and shape the new Republican face!? We share the values and principles of the Republican Party, but our voices in the past have fallen on deaf ears.

When elected and party officials are quoted as saying such outlandish comments as, ?Operation Wetback; Change the Constitution because of too many anchor babies in our country; and all the terrorists are coming through Mexico (knowing full well that the 9-11 terrorists came from Canada when they overstayed their visas)? it is no wonder why Republicans continue to lose elections and registration advantages.

17% of eligible voters in Arizona are Latino. How many elections are determined with a margin of victory or defeat with less than 17%? — Almost all of them. Imagine the impact Latinos would have if all eligible Hispanic voters were registered to vote. Somos Republicans will work tirelessly to ensure that approximately 673,000 eligible Hispanic voters in Arizona are registered to vote, and will explain the Republican values of being pro-family, patriotic, pro-2nd Amendment, pro-religious freedom, pro-life, pro-Capitalism, supportive of the school voucher system, supportive of a strong military and national defense, against tax increases, for smaller government, and for humane immigration reform focusing on legalizing labor that would yield significant income gains for Americans and our households.

“Gay Day” for California School Children Close to Becoming Law

Sacramento, CA – Schools across California may soon be devoting an entire school day to honor homosexual icon Harvey Milk, if Governor Schwarzenegger signs a bill passed this week by the California legislature.

The bill, SB 572, requires that the Governor proclaim every May 22 as Harvey Milk Day, “and would designate that day as having special significance in public schools and educational institutions and would encourage those entities to conduct suitable commemorative exercises on that date.”  The bill offers no opt-out provisions for parents who might not want their children to focus on sexual issues.

Some believe that Governor Schwarzenegger might sign the measure this time because of recent honors bestowed on Harvey Milk by Hollywood and President Obama.

[On August 12, 2009 Barry Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Harvey Milk.]

Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute, urged Californians to contact Governor Schwarzenegger and express opposition to the bill, stating, “This is one of the most blatant attempts yet to bypass parents and push homosexual indoctrination on young students.  In an increasingly competitive global marketplace, our youth cannot afford to have classroom instruction time wasted on politically correct propaganda.”

To express opposition to SB 572, citizens can call Governor Schwarzenegger’s office at (916) 445-2841.  Please note that the phone lines are often busy, so persistence may be necessary in order to communicate your opinion. Gay rights groups are also urging their constituents to call the Governor in support of the bill.

Pacific Justice Institute is working alongside other leading California pro-family groups, including Capitol Resource Institute, California Family Council and Concerned Women of America of California, to defeat SB 572.

Footnote: San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, (with the mustache)  served 11 months in office and on November 27, 1978, Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by former SF Supervisor Dan White.  Harvey and Dan began their relationship as friends and political colleagues, their relationship soured when Harvey withdrew his support for a measure very important to Dan.

Unable to support his family, Dan resigned from the Board of Supervisors, but later changed his mind.  When Mayor Muscone wouldn’t allow him to return, Dan crawled through a basement window at City Hall to avoid the metal detector, and shot Mayore Moscone.  He then went to Harvey’s office and shot and killed him too.

It is well established, the assignation of Harvey Milk had nothing to do with his pioneering of Gay Rights in California.

Let consumers go green by choice

By Nick Dranias
Goldwater Institute

Arizonans are facing down a speeding locomotive of utility rate hikes. This runaway train is fueled both by increasing demand for electricity and by regulation that forces utilities to generate electricity from costly sources. Worse, the current system of state-sanctioned electrical utility monopolies ties consumers to the tracks–giving them no choice but to pay whatever rates are forced upon them.

It doesn’t have to be this way, the free market can be unleashed to minimize the pain. Arizona can open up its electrical grid to competition. Opening the grid would let innovative entrepreneurs fulfill the demand for all types of energy, including renewable, green energy. For example, once the electricity market in Texas was restructured for competition, generation capacity increased by 35 percent and much of that was through renewable sources.

By letting entrepreneurs sell electricity from renewable sources to environmentally-minded consumers, competition shifts the costs of green policies to green consumers, keeping rates lower for everyone else. Although the Texas market is still evolving and rates have not yet fallen overall, in Britain’s more mature market, a similar expansion in capacity driven by competition eventually lowered overall rates by 30 percent.

Electrical utilities should compete for your-hard earned dollar just like every other business.  And when they do, your rates will stabilize and ultimately go down.

Pop Culture Destroys the White House Again

As someone who follows pop culture and its relationship to the political arena, I found it somewhat interesting when the trailer to 2012 was released a few months ago.

In the trailer, there is a clip where the aircraft carrier, USS John F. Kennedy, is swept up by a ginormous tidal wave. The ship capsizes and, as the trailer shows, the ship rolls right on top of the White House.

This scene should actually come as no surprise. The same director who put out the movie Independence Day also destroyed the White House by an invading alien spaceship laser-beaming it into oblivion. The director then was Roland Emmerich. The date that movie was released was July 3, 1996. (In fact, President Bill Clinton was given a private viewing the day before at the White House.) Emmerich will release 2012 on Friday, November 13th. Danny Glover will play the President of the United States.

One surpising thing I remember at the time that ID4 was being talked up across the country, was that many audiences were applauding when the White House was destroyed. Some of you may remember that even Rush Limbaugh mentioned it on his program.

My strange fascination in doomsday and apocalyptic movies makes me wonder if Emmerich planned this latest clip because it provoked such a popularly macabre response in his earlier work or if he has some disdain for who resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. For some reason, the mood of the country tells me he may generate the same reaction all over again.

Coincidence? We shall find out.

Bill Montgomery Launches Exploratory Committee

Sonoran Alliance has learned that attorney Bill Montgomery has just launched an exploratory committee to seek the office of Maricopa County Attorney. This of course is under the assumption that current County Attorney Andrew Thomas will seek the office of Arizona Attorney General.

Because Andrew Thomas was recently re-elected as Maricopa County Attorney in 2008 and that office is a four-year term, Thomas would step down upon the formation of a full-blown committee. This would create a vacancy which the current Board of Supervisors would need to appoint a replacement. Regardless, a special election would be required to elect Thomas’ successor.

Bill Montgomery is a very credible and formidible candidate having run for statewide Attorney General in 2006. With his announcement, any other Republicans should think seriously about pursing the same office. Any Democrats should also be worried.

Obama Corps: And the Children Shall Lead Them

Putting aside Ms Napolitano’s orientation for a minute, other than the Patchouli oil reeking lefties and socialist progressives out there, who can see what’s blatantly wrong with this picture?  Remember the picture I last posted of a smiling, duly democratically elected, popular dictator posing with the children?  Remember the picture of the Cuban kids smiling and waving?

Barry Sotero (aka the president), is building his “domestic security force” (his words), just as he promised.  Call me what you wish, if it walks like a tyrant, quacks like a tyrant and acts like a tyrant-to-be … my guess is that it is a tyrant to be -

Secretary Napolitano and Girl Scouts of the USA Announce New Preparedness Patch

Release Date: September 8, 2009

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano and Girl Scouts of the USA CEO Kathy Cloninger today unveiled a Girl Scout preparedness patch—designed to engage Girl Scouts and their families in personal preparedness for all emergencies—and announced a new affiliation between DHS Citizen Corps and the Girl Scouts to advance community preparedness nationwide.

“This new preparedness patch will increase citizen preparedness and enhance our country’s readiness for disasters,” said Secretary Napolitano. “As a former Girl Scout, I know the ‘Be Prepared’ motto well—and I look forward to working with the Girl Scouts to spread the preparedness message to all of our nation’s citizens.”

“Girl Scouts are thrilled to be partnering with the Department of Homeland Security … Citizen Corps is a terrific program—one that provides an opportunity for our girls to lead the way in ensuring that their families and their communities are prepared for emergencies.

The preparedness patch program, developed by the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides critical emergency preparedness information and activities for all levels of Girl Scouts.

In addition to collaborating on the new patch, Secretary Napolitano and Ms. Cloninger also signed an agreement formalizing an affiliation between Citizen Corps and the Girl Scouts that creates a partnership to motivate young women to become community leaders in emergency management and response fields and raises public awareness about personal preparedness, training and community service opportunities.

The announcements took place at Scotchtown Hills Elementary School in Laurel, Md., where Secretary Napolitano participated in President Obama’s My Education, My Future initiative by visiting students and listening to the President’s remarks encouraging them to work hard, set educational goals and take responsibility for their learning.

The announcements are part of September’s National Preparedness Month, during which Secretary Napolitano is encouraging citizens around the country to focus on becoming better prepared for and more resilient in the face of emergencies of all kinds.

DHS Citizen Corps, part of FEMA’s Community Preparedness Division, is a community-based initiative to bring government and community leaders together to involve citizens and organizations in all-hazards emergency preparedness, planning, mitigation, response and recovery.

The Girl Scouts of the USA, chartered by Congress in 1950, is a worldwide organization dedicated solely to girls to build character and skills for success in the real world in an accepting and nurturing environment.

The Room for Closed Minds

A quick follow-up on the Obama speech to government school students earlier this week.

This morning, the Barry Young show (KFYI-550) reported that two separate uncorroborated incidents of student stigmatization had occurred at two different schools. Apparently, some schools have chosen to re-show the Obama speech today on the anniversary of September 11th. Students who chose to opt-out of the speech were told they could go to “the room for closed minds” by their teachers.

We know that there is a covert and even overt liberal indoctrination taking place in many of the government-run schools but can it be so bad that teachers are now using the same vernacular to ostracize students who disagree with the Cult of Obama?

We would like to have your comments on this and if anyone else has also experienced the same stigmatization.

E Pluribus Discerpo?

Pat Buchanan has a provocative assessment of the current political climate posted over at World Net Daily in which he asserts that American may be coming apart.

Given the growing dicension and unrest, I would have to agree with him. And we should have expected it. For several generations, American attitudes have been shifting between those who give and those who take; those who reap the benefits of government and those who pay for them.

It’s an attitude of entitlement and that everything other than life, liberty and property is a “right.”

We’ve been warned about this already many many years ago by a Scot named Sir Alexander Fraser Tytler when he supposedly said:

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

I’m not certain that Tytler had our situation in mind when he made his famous statement given that we are actually a Constitutional Republic, but I would have to agree that once a certain number of the population realizes that they can vote themselves into dependence on the state, we have a real problem.

I can easily see the other portion of the population revolting and collectively shutting down funding of the entire system. Already some conservative celebrities have suggested they’re gonna stop paying taxes into the system probably through tax avoidance (not to be confused with tax evasion). Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe they will be blatant in their refusal to fund the federal government. Regardless, I get a sense that those who have been funding the system are a day short from refusing to pay any more. And why should we expect anything but that when we’ve already escalated our everyday financial vernacular to the use of the word “Trillion” with a capital “T?”

I hope I’m wrong about this but I have a terrible gut feeling that our economic political and social system is about to collapse under the weight of entitlement.

If or when that happens, life in America will be very different. A post-American senario has already been predicted by Russian political science professor, Igor Panarin, but I don’t give total credence to his disintigration of the US hypothesis. We may be weak but not to the point where other countries rapidly infiltrate and balkanize us into six separate nation states. But his assertion that we are overwhelmed with financial turmoil and to a certain degree, moral degredation, does worry many of us.

Back to Buchanan’s column where he says:

We are not only more divided than ever on politics, faith and morality, but along the lines of class and ethnicity. Those who opposed Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court and stood by Sgt. Crowley in the face-off with Harvard’s Henry Louis Gates were called racists. But this time they did not back down. They threw the same vile word right back in the face of their accusers, and Barack Obama.

Consider but a few issues on which Americans have lately been bitterly divided: school prayer, the Ten Commandments, evolution, the death penalty, abortion, homosexuality, assisted suicide, affirmative action, busing, the Confederate battle flag, the Duke rape case, Terri Schiavo, Iraq, amnesty, torture.

Now it is death panels, global warming, “birthers” and socialism. If a married couple disagreed as broadly and deeply as Americans do on such basic issues, they would have divorced and gone their separate ways long ago. What is it that still holds us together?

The European-Christian core of the country that once defined us is shrinking, as Christianity fades, the birth rate falls and Third World immigration surges. Globalism dissolves the economic bonds, while the cacophony of multiculturalism displaces the old American culture.

“E pluribus unum” – out of many, one – was the national motto the men of ’76 settled upon. One sees the pluribus. But where is the unum? One sees the diversity. But where is the unity?

Sounds to me like our motto may be changing to “E Pluribus Discerpo” but I pray I’m wrong, if praying is still allowed.
